I'm a serious beginner and I chose this book for what it offered and then was surprised to notice that it's a Reader's Digest book (sorry, but I guess I'm a bit of a book snob). Well nevermind because it's a terrific book. Hazel Harrison walks you through a huge variety of watercolor techniques. Great lessons and reference.
I would have appreciated specific paint colors and brands with each example/technique, but even without that it's a very valuable resource.

Over the years, I have bought many watercolor books to help me get started painting with watercolor. I wish I had found this one first. It has the basics and more. The techniques and demonstrations are illustrated extremely well. The text is easy to follow, too. In some cases, it even gives two approaches to painting the same subject matter. Good color theory, too. I know I will use this now and into the future.

This book is for the beginner and does a great job of starting off with the basics and then some exercises to do as you go getting one familiar with the materials and processes. I love the way it's "learn as you go" style, not with a "jump in and do your own thing" type of exercise, but a practical step by step guide with why we do what we do. My wife paints aquarell pictures since many years and has made great headway. Her father was an artist and she inherited the talent and studied the rest from books.
By coincidence a friend lend her the above book and my wife is enthused about its contents. Its structure and the detailed guidance through the difficult world of waterpainting is unique. Also the preparedness of the author to share his knowledge with others.
Unfortunately the book is no longer availbale. We hope to still get ist from somewhere.

This book was decent - not great. The examples, in my opinion, were boring and tends to be the abstract kind. There were VERY few step-by-step instructions on how to do those paintings, and the caption underneath a picture would talk about 2 steps while the picture shows only 1 of those steps. So, as you can see, I found this book to be a bit frustrating. I gave it another 1/2 star because it taught me how to paint the ocean waters.

I thought this book was very good, especially for the beginner. It went through palette, color mixing, grounds, additives, and content. For the more experienced painter, I thought it made a good reference and refresher. It also had several artists who contributed their examples. This book is well illustrated with reference photos and more.
A rotten artist.......2000-01-05
I received this and several other books for Christmas from a professional artist who wanted me to share her passion for acrylic painting. This book is by far the best for a beginner such as myself. Most of the books my friend sent me were almost entirely devoted to technique, but this book also went into great detail about brushes, paints, canvas, paper, colors, etc. The author dedicates two pages to each topic, all of which are very well laid out and well organized (the pages even have color coded boxes in the top corner to help you find exactly what you are looking for). There are countless pictures that illustrate the effects of various techniques using different colors and mediums, which allows the beginning artist to skip over much of the initial experimentation usually involved when starting a new craft. There is no doubt that this is a book for beginners, but I think it is an ideal place to start. Secondly, despite its novice approach, the author covers nearly all of the techniques discussed in books that are considered to be far more advanced. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about starting to paint with acrylics. Enjoy.
worth the purchase for newbies.......1999-09-11
i have never been an artist and don't have a lot of ability. i do; however, have the desire and the images in my head. this book really gave me the tool/skills/strategies necessary to get me going. i actually like the painting that i have completed. it looks better than i expected and i learned from the book to make it that way. as beginner as i am, i already feel i am past this book and ready for the next lesson. hmmm! i guess i'll buy something else.
The best overview of acrylics I've seen for a beginner........1999-01-06
I am just starting out in acrylics and this book has been a fabulous resource. All the important information is very clearly and succinctly presented. The book has many photos so you can easily see what they are talking about rather than having to trudge through a lot of words. Highly recommended!

Skies & Clouds by Richard Taylor is disappointing. Beginners should find the text instructive and techniques not intimidating, but the examples contain many errors (often according to his own advice) making them counter productive to the student aspiring to greater proficiency. The author demonstrates merely modest painting ability of the subject. Regretfully the lighting and shadows are not well rendered and contrast values are weak. His clouds are overly ephemeral with little structure. A watercolor of a "Sky and Sea" is the most convincing, because the waves of the sea are well rendered, but the sky is confused with fog and rays of light that look like rain. The book's purpose of being a "field guide" to aid in the artists perception of nature is good, but a more observant eye and commentary is desirable. The watercolors display visual paint textures but fall short of being inspiring Skies or Clouds.

Pretty picture as in all DK books but gives an entire overview of all acrylic paining in 72 pages. A lot of simple paragraph definitions of techniques but nothing of any direction or use for a begining painter. A great picture book for a child.

Good Book, Not Great Book.......2007-07-03
Considering that I have yet to find a complete compedium of Acrylic techniques, this is probably one of the better books out there, especially for beginners. This book will give you the short and skinny on your tools, paint and mediums, and canvases/surfaces. After that, the book starts giving examples on how to tranfer your image onto the canvas with pencil prior to painting, using opaque methods to painting, transparent(watercolor style) methods, drybrushing, scumbling, and more. Then at the end of the book, it contains a series of gallry examples in acrylic to inspire. This book is a good foundation book, and gives many approaches to using acrylic.
Indispensable for the Beginner.......2006-08-16
When I decided that I wanted to start painting, I bought five "How To" books. This one is my favorite, hands down. The book is well organized, well written, and contains a lot of beautifully detailed photographs. The author has kept the text to a minimum, letting the photographs do much of the talking, which works far better for me than other books that have more emphasis on written instruction.
In only 72 pages, every topic is covered, and no question is left unanswered. It begins with a brief history of the medium, then moves on to cover color, paint types, brushes, painting surfaces, tools, and techniques, as well as galleries of different painting styles. There's even a section on experimental approaches, such as stenciling and inventive scraping. Rather than presenting a series of exercises (as many books do), this author encourages experimentation and discovering your own personal style, an approach that really inspired me to pick up a brush and get started.
Also worth mentioning is that every photograph and illustration is in color . . . really GOOD color. This may sound like a no-brainer, but a few of the other books I purchased contained a lot of black-and-white photos. Hey, you can't learn to paint in black and white!
Experienced artists may find the material here a bit too rudimentary, but for the true novice, like myself, this book is a winner. If you're looking for that ONE book to get you started, this is it!
