Gucci. Just the name conjures up images of la dolce vita—Cinecittà stars strolling on the Via Condotti; Jackie O and her signature bag; the Studio 54 chant “Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci”; Tom Ford's sexy, minimalist era, during which stars and socialites lined up to wear his clothes; and now the fresh and joyous vision of Frida Giannini, the line's new creative director.

Gucci by Gucci opens the fabled house's archives for the first time, bringing together—in the form of bags, clothes, accessories, and a dazzling cache of documentary photographs—the history of the Florentine family-owned saddler that has imprinted its name on the fashion consciousness. Both a history of the company and a glorious visual exploration of its far-reaching influence, the book is a treat for the collector and the fan.

5 out of 5 stars The Gucci book.......2007-01-10

I was absolutely amazed at the size of this book. It's huge! The pictures are wonderful. However, I wish that the personalities were named on the page of the photo instead of in a photo icon sized index in the rear of the book. Otherwise, a quite amazing journal on the history of Gucci.

    Book Description

The acclaimed author of Original Cyn finds fertile ground for her wicked wit in this ferociously funny new novel about babies, sex, celebrity...and daring to date a gynecologist.

Ruby (still single at thirty-two) Silverman has made a name for herself at Les Sprogs, her exclusive baby boutique where trust-fund mothers swaddle their infants in the hottest designer wear. But all those bumps and babes can’t prepare Ruby for the bombshell her fifty-year-old mother drops on her: Ruby’s about to get…a baby brother or sister!

When Ruby recovers from the shock of her mother’s pregnancy, she can’t help but question her own baby-making future. Is catering to celebrity moms and cooing over her friends’ kids all she has to look forward to? Sam Epstien would passionately disagree. He’s the gorgeous Jewish gynecologist who has set his amorous sights on her. Soon they’re seriously involved, and life seems to be looking up for Ruby. Until she stumbles upon a shady baby-brokering business that could erupt into a major scandal, derail her career, and maybe even force her to toss the supposedly perfect man out with the bathwater.

    3 out of 5 stars Ehh..........2007-08-28

This book was a bit different than typical "chick lit." However, perhaps sticking to the "formula" for writing chick lit would have been a better idea for Margolis.

It's a good story, and she generally makes her characters likeable, which is the strongest point of the book. The plot lines are a bit far fetched with Sam's (the male love interest) family associations and a hospital's ethics. But it is interesting despite those things.

I think this book is suited well for someone looking for something light and mindless to read. In other words, "Gucci Gucci Coo" (which could be the cutest title I have ever heard) is the perfect summer beach/pool side read. I enjoyed reading it.

2 out of 5 stars Gucci, Gucci, Dull........2007-07-04

'Gucci Gucci Coo' is one step up from a cheap romance novel. That's not to say it's a horrible book, it's just that the writing is simplistic, and the story line is hackneyed. The attempt at creative plot development is weak, and the characters are too familiar. It seems like mostly a reformulated version of any number of other chick-lit novels.

The book starts out with the protagonist, Ruby, at the gynecologist's office. There are some very funny moments in those first few pages, and you're thinking, "This is going to be fun!" but the book digresses from there. Sue Margolis is unnecessarily wordy, and the extra words don't add anything to the story; however, her writing style is easy enough to follow, and even with the British colloquialisms and humor, it's not difficult to get. It's just that most of the time you're thinking- "Cut to the chase already!" The main character, Ruby, owns a chic children's clothing store and has some quirky friends and "Boho" parents. She meets a handsome American doctor, and, well, you know...they hook up. Her mother gets pregnant at 50, which you think will be amusing, but it's just sort of in the story, not the story. There are some comical moments (although they're not as funny as the time in the gyno's office), and there's a bit of a plot twist that keeps things going towards the end, but that's only near the end. The last 100 pages are the most interesting, and Sue Margolis could have condensed the first 250 pages into about 100 pages- 352 pages is too long to tell this story.

This book is not in the same league as other "chick-lit" novels by writers like Jennifer Weiner or Emily Giffin. It seems amateurish and dated, not fresh and inventive. If you like chick lit, check out `Something Borrowed' or `Something Blue' by Emily Giffin, or `Good In Bed' by Jennifer Weiner. Those books will have you reading from start to finish in one sitting.

    3 out of 5 stars Cute read..........2007-02-28

I agree with another poster, it was slow at first but did pick up. There are some sex scenes played out in the book but from the looks of her other books, that is how this author is. This book wouldn't be my first recommendation but if someone asked, I would tell them to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Boring at first, but soon picks up.......2007-01-06

I found this book to be rather boring at the beginning. Besides trying to decipher the British English (since it varies so much from American English) nothing was really reeling me in. I'm glad I continued on, though.

The mystery definitely drew me in. Unlike the other reviewer, I enjoyed the sex scenes. I didn't find them crude or distasteful at all.

While the ending was awfully Hollywoodish for me, it was still a good mindless read.

    2 out of 5 stars Be Forewarned.......2006-12-30

Humorous but crude. Well written but sexually explicit. Be aware that the lust-obssessed characters and some graphically described sex scenes detract from an otherwise entertaining plot.

A world-famous luxury brand, financial skullduggery, vicious family quarrels ending in a sensational murder: the Gucci story just couldn't be juicier, and former Women's Wear Daily correspondent Sara Gay Forden does full justice to its gossipy appeal. Guccio Gucci opened his first leather-goods store in Florence in 1921, but it was his son Aldo who expanded the company overseas and made products like the Gucci loafer and the Flora scarf international symbols of status and affluence. Aldo's sons, his brother Rodolfo, and Rodolfo's son Maurizio, all of whom also worked in the family business, didn't always appreciate Aldo's imperious ways, and corporate board meetings often ended with ashtrays and Gucci handbags flying. Things got so bad in the early 1980s that Aldo's renegade son Paolo made public financial documents that very nearly sent his father to jail for tax fraud. Even more lurid was the 1995 execution-style murder of Maurizio, followed by the conviction in 1998 of his ex-wife Patrizia for ordering the hit. Meanwhile, CEO Domenico De Sole and creative director Tom Ford were transforming Gucci from a family-run company into a modern corporation once again on the cutting edge of fashion and marketing. Forden makes the business story as dramatic as the Guccis' personal squabbles (and of course the two were often interconnected) in a highly entertaining family biography that doubles as a savvy business history. --Wendy Smith

    Book Description

Did Patrizia Reggiani murder her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci, in 1995 because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because her glamorous ex was preparing to marry his mistress, Paola Franchi? Or is there a possibility she didn't do it at all?

In this gripping account of the ascent, eventual collapse, and resurrection of the Gucci dynasty, Sara Gay Forden takes us behind the scenes of the trial and exposes the passions, the power, and the vulnerabilities of the greatest fashion family of our times.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Intense reading........2007-10-01

This is a very interesting book about the Gucci family, but it at times delved too much into all the business and acquisitions. It got at times really complexed. Having said that, it was a really good and interesting book. It was almost as if the author didn't want the story to end. I am glad I read it.

1 out of 5 stars Stick to magazines, Ms. Forden.......2007-07-03

Yes, the Gucci story is intriguing. And yes, Ms. Forden provides some historical facts. But remember, this is a book. It should be readable. Ms. Forden's constant and trivial inclusion of far too much 'stuff' is more annoying than enlightening.

This book could be condensed into 200 pages. Thoughtfully written and entertaining by someone other than Ms. Forden. It is a laborious task to tread through the boring an completely unnecessary details. Ms. Forden, no one cares about the work history of then-Head-of BergdorfGoodman.

Poorly written, this book is one long magazine article. Paragraph after paragraph of unnecessary filler. I suggest you find some other way to capture the history of the Gucci company.

    4 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2007-03-10

The subtitle said it all: "A sensational story of murder, madness, glamour and greed". The perfect combination for a successful novel that in reality has been real life. Read it!

4 out of 5 stars Quality Product, Quality Book.......2007-01-16

I have inherited and purchased a few Gucci pieces, and have been so fond of the quality of their products that I thought I would read this book as a "light read." I was completely surprised by the first chapter that I just kept on turning the pages. It's anything but a light read, but a great read! This book really does have it all, including a tremendous education into the fashion empire. I also love the Italian detail and family disfunction. The author did a fantastic job of weaving the intimate details of a family, a business, and a family business. I have not lost an ounce of respect for the Gucci product, in fact I am more of a fan. Blood, sweat, and tears.

    5 out of 5 stars A Passion for Fashion..........2005-09-10

The House of Gucci reads like a soap opera in book form. Dramatic elements involving the fashion industry, business, and a dysfunctional family are deftly interwoven into a book that is impossible to put down. This novel is a perfect example of how power and greed can lead to the downward spiral of an outwardly- perfect family. Forden writes in a way that would keep any of a number of people riveted, including the fashionistas, the business- savvy, and those who are simply fond of the Italian culture. I have not hesitated in recommending this book to friends and family.

The Tax Reform Act of 1986 was the single most sweeping change in the history of America's income tax. It was also the best political and economic story of its time. Here, in the anecdotal style of The Making of the President, two Wall Street Journal reporters provide the first complete picture of how this tax revolution went from an improbable dream to a widely hailed reality.

2 out of 5 stars Umm, did I read the same book?.......2006-10-09

I'm having a hard time believing the reviews I see here. Gucci Gulch is by far one of the most boring books I've read this year. Perhaps, it's because it was required literature for Intro to Poli Sci, but that's beside the point. This book is too detailed. I agree with the comment where it should have been condensed, but I want to stress that this information cannot be found elsewhere without intense research. I commend the author for his diligent work, but this book just wasn't for me. It's 291 pages on the Tax Reform of 1986. If that's your cup of joe, I would highly suggest it. Avoid it if you are a casual reader.

    4 out of 5 stars a good book.......2004-08-02

Definitely an enjoyable book that gives insight into the behind-the-scenes details of congressional politics. "Showdown" is a great book if you are interested in the nitty-gritty details of lobbying or Congress and Birnbaum and Murray provide a knack for detail (and humour) rarely found in today's books. Written in '86ish, and still a classic. A great supplement to "The Power Game" by Hedrick Smith.

    5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2003-06-25

the best book I was ever required to read for a class

4 out of 5 stars Still the best case study of congressional decision making.......2002-01-23

Tax laws may have changed, some of the main actors are serving jail time, but it doesn't matter. This is the best case study of congressional decision making available. I still use this in courses because there is no better example of the tension between political horse trading and genuine reformist impulses available.

Is it detailed? Of course it is: the back and forth in the Ways and Means committee, for example, illustrates the kind of negotiaions that are the bread and butter of policy making.

Is there material that is "in the encyclopedia?" That is silly. There is little there that is basic review. In fact, anyone who found this boring probably does not know the basics of congressional procedures -- that is not the goal of this book -- or has a professor or teacher who does not know how to link a journalistic case study like this with the textbook or scholarly treatment of Congress.

    A classic.

4 out of 5 stars Too detailed? That's where the devil is..........2000-04-21

While this book may not appeal to students in search of the CliffNotes version of the political process, this exhaustive account of the1986 tax reform bill gets a complicated story just about right. Especially when it concerns the tax code, the devil is in the details, and while B&M sometimes go a little overboard in describing the small print of oil depletion allowances and the like, the fact is that Congressmen think that way -- and voters had better know it. All in all, a solid addition to the 'how a bill becomes a law' ouevre. Plus, it makes you like an odd array of people: Ronald Reagan, Bill Bradley, and even Bob Packwood. Where are they now?... END

      Book Description

Olive growing is expanding rapidly in many countries around the world in which olives have not previously been widely cultivated. Pruning olive trees is quite different from pruning other fruit trees of the temperate zone, because of their biological peculiarities. Errors in pruning may result in yield losses or higher cultivation costs. Pruning also determines the training system which, in turn, is one of the major factors for successful tree performance and orchard profitability.

Pruning and Training Systems for Modern Olive Growing summarises the most up-to-date information available on current pruning techniques and training systems. It specifically addresses the problems faced by growers, professionals and students who are new to olive growing and provides information previously not available in English.

The fundamental aim of this book is to explain the basic concepts at a practical level. It will allow the reader, whether experienced horticulturist or beginner, to develop his or her own skills and pruning strategy.

      Book Description

Kalico Jones candidly recounts trials, tribulations, obstacles, pitfalls and personal growth, in her novel, When Gucci Came First (True tales of a t.r.a.m.p). From the first page she connects with the reader by using inviting dialogue that flows smoothly, laying the foundation for a wild journey with a surprise ending that will make you rejoice with her and breathe a sigh of much needed relief. You will almost feel as though you are snooping in a private journal that is kept under lock and key and hidden in a bottom dresser drawer. Her fresh delivery remains consistent, until you turn the last page. At that point, you miss her and want to know more about the woman behind the story. When she is obviously in pain, you root for her to recover. And when she is off track, you feel like admonishing her for losing her way, almost wanting to shout, Stop the madness Kalico! Not again! This emotional battle continues and often increases in intensity, just when you thought nothing more could shake you up. The characters innermost thoughts are frank, uncensored, and truly telling of how she is thinking in any and all circumstances. Her delivery is laced with honesty that many wish we could have, but will probably never manage to have the courage to expose. The types of secrets she tells are the type which most of us will take to our grave - deep, hurtful, frightening tales that will bring you to tears and add to your understanding of human frailty. If you feel tempted to judge her behavior, you will regret it and ultimately feel ashamed for rushing to judgment. By the end of her work, her strength and determination to win a war is so evident, it stands up on its own and looks you in the face.
