Book Description
For turbulent flows at relatively low speeds there exists an excellent mathematical model in the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Why then is the "problem of turbulence" so difficult? One reason is that these nonlinear partial differential equations appear to be insoluble, except through numerical simulations, which offer useful approximations, but little direct understanding. Three recent developments offer new hope. First, the discovery by experimentalists of coherent structures in certain turbulent flows. Secondly, the suggestion that strange attractors and other ideas from finite dimensional dynamical systems theory might play a role in the analysis of the governing equations. And, finally, the introduction of the Karhunen Loève or proper orthogonal decomposition. This book introduces these developments and describes how they may be combined to create low-dimensional models of turbulence, resolving only the coherent structures. This book will interest engineers, especially in the aerospace, chemical, civil, environmental and geophysical areas, as well as physicists and applied mathematicians concerned with turbulence.

Book Description
Deployable structures can vary their shape automatically from a compact, packaged configuration to an expanded, operational configuration. The first properly engineered deployable structures were used as stabilization booms on early spacecraft. Later on, more complex structures were devised for solar arrays, communication reflectors and telescopes. In other fields there have been a variety of developments, including retractable roofs for stadia, foldable components for cars, portable structures for temporary shelters and exhibition displays. Three main themes are discussed in this book: concepts, working principles, and mechanics of deployable structures, both in engineering and biology; in addition: theory of foldable bar structures and application to deployable tensegrieties; formulation of large-rotation analysis of deployable structures and finite-element simulation methods.

Book Description
In singularity theory and algebraic geometry the monodromy group is embodied in the Picard-Lefschetz formula and the Picard-Fuchs equations. It has applications in the weakened 16th Hilbert problem and in mixed Hodge structures. In the theory of systems of linear differential equations one has the Riemann-Hilbert problem, the Stokes phenomena and the hypergeometric functions with their multidimensional generalizations. In the theory of homomorphic foliations there appear the Ecalle-Voronin-Martinet-Ramis moduli. On the other hand, there is a deep connection of monodromy theory with Galois theory of differential equations and algebraic functions. All this is presented in this book, underlining the unifying role of the monodromy group. The material is addressed to a wide audience, ranging from specialists in the theory of ordinary differential equations to algebraic geometers. The book contains a lot of results which are usually spread in many sources. Readers can quickly get introduced to modern and vital mathematical theories, such as singularity theory, analytic theory of ordinary differential equations, holomorphic foliations, Galois theory, and parts of algebraic geometry, without searching in vast literature.

Book Description
This book ushers in a new era of experimental and theoretical investigations into collective processes, structure formation, and self-organization of nuclear matter. It reports the results of experiments wherein for the first time the nuclei constituting our world (those displayed in Mendeleev's table as well as the super-heavy ones) have been artificially created. Pioneering breakthroughs are described, achieved at the “Proton-21” Laboratory, Kiev, Ukraine, in a variety of new physical and technological directions.
A detailed description of the main experiments, their analyses, and the interpretation of copious experimental data are given, along with the methodology governing key measurements and the processing algorithms of the data that empirically confirm the occurrence of macroscopic self-organizing processes leading to the nuclear transformations of various materials. The basic concepts underlying the initiation of self-sustaining collective processes that result in the formation of nuclear structures are also examined.
How to realize nucleosynthesis of stable nuclei in the laboratory? Why are metallic meteorites of iron or nickel-iron? Could the iron be nuclear fuel and could an iron star blow up as a supernova? And what could be the energy source of such an explosion? Is it possible to obtain nuclear energy from any terrestrial substance without producing radioactivity? Do super-heavy (Migdal's) nuclei exist, and is it possible to synthesize them in the laboratory? What physical mechanisms could one use to control nuclear transformations and particularly the sign of the overall energy balance involved?
Answers to these and other intriguing questions are to be found in this book.

Book Description
Magnetism encompasses a wide range of systems and physical phenomena, and its study has posed and exposed both important fundamental problems and many practical applications.
Recently, several entirely new phenomena have thus been discovered, generated through cooperative behaviour which could not have been predicted from a knowledge of `one-spin' states. At the same time, advances in sample preparation, experimental technique, apparatus and radiation sources, have led to increasing precision in the investigation and exposure of greater subtleties in magnetic thin films, multilayers and other systems.
Examples of unexpected and conceptually new phenomena occur in strongly correlated and fluctuating quantum systems, producing effects such as Haldane and spin-Peierls gaps, solitons, quantum spin glasses and spin liquids. The discovery and elucidation of these `emerging properties' is a central theme in modern condensed matter physics.
The present book comprises a series of chapters by world experts, covering both theoretical and experimental aspects. The approach is pedagogical and tutorial, but fully up to date, covering the latest research. The level is appropriate to graduate researchers who may either be just moving into the field or who are already active in condensed matter physics.

"It's clearly a budget. It's got a lot of numbers in it."
"I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family."
"I do know I'm ready for the job [the presidency].
And if not, that's just the way it goes."

Nobody Could Dream This Stuff Up.......2007-03-22
This book could not have been dreamed up as a work of fiction unless...well, it just couldn't have been! I have owned this book for quite a while, and pull it out whenever I need a reality check on what is happening in Washington DC. The quotes are amazing, and what is even more amazing is that someone who speaks so poorly could have ever been elected as President of the US.
There may also be a little bit of sad commentary here, as this reflects on the Bush Family tradition of not reading. It also is somewhat of a commentary on the "excellent schools" that Bush went to. How could they let someone with such poor grammar graduate?
Need a laugh...get this book...unless your a diehard W supporter!
The Joke is On Us.......2007-03-13
This book makes me think of the classic, "Everybody Plays the Fool" because "there's no exception to the rule." The line "don't you think the joker laughs at you" from the Beatles' 1967 classic, "I Am the Walrus" is also startlingly a propos. Dumbya is a genuine fool.
This trenchant, very funny book underscores just how subliterate, inarticulate and lacking in intelligence Dumbya really is. While Dumbya's malapropisms are funny, it is also scary to think of somebody of such limited ability as president. Dumbya's administration is of the emperor's new clothing genre and I am glad to see more people coming out and publicly admitting that the emperor is naked.
Dumbya has proven yet again his overall incompetence by causing a federal deficit and his gross bungling the most senseless, needless and useless war involving America. Although much of this book covers 2000, it heralds what is yet to come from the worst president in history. For those who voted for him, I apologize if any offense was taken as none was meant. I do think that the joke ended up on everybody as we have been saddled with this incompetent person since the bungled election of 2000. Oh, and the election mess in Florida? No surprise there - Dumbya's brother Jeb's political state! Haven't they heard of the Voters' Rights Act of 1965? Apparently not, as many people were denied access to voting in the 2000 election.
There are many, myself included who feel the 2000 election was stolen. Had the fouled up election not taken place, we would not have ended up with this sad excuse of a president. I am very glad I didn't vote for him either time. Still, if you want some comic relief during these tense times, this book is for you. It is trenchant, cleverly written and well worth the read.
Great Gift!.......2007-02-13
To the anti-bush family or friend. Will bring a spark of humor to the otherwise angered person! heh
Having a few laughs on the worst president ever.......2007-01-02
I'll make this review short and to the point. Reading the quotes in this book shows what a moron George W. Bush essentially is. It's very funny but it's not at all funny to realize that such a cretin is the most powerful man in the world. Although he tries hard to not make such glaring mistakes in his public speaking these days, he has proven his inborn stupidity by racking up an astronomical federal deficit and mismanaging the most useless war America has ever been involved in. Most of the content of this short book is from 2000 but it was certainly a warning of things to come if enough people were stupid enough to vote for this stupid man. Of course, the 2000 election was stolen but if it hadn't been so close, the hijacking of the presidency couldn't have happened. However, stupidity reigns in America so just read this book and have a good laugh. The joke's on us all.
Someone please kill me!!!.......2006-06-21
Try this one on for size
I glance at the headlines just to kind of get a flavor for what's moving. I rarely read the stories, and get briefed by people who are probably read the news themselves." --Washington, D.C., Sept. 21, 2003
That says it all there. I really can't explian how this guy got elected but his quotes make for some hilarious reading.
Overall-If you ever need to laugh make sure you have this book handy.
Book Description
Over 400 memorable quotes expressed by America's chief executives, among them U.S. Grant's "I know only two tunes. One of them is 'Yankee Doodle' and the other isn't," Jimmy Carter's "Whatever starts in California unfortunately has an inclination to spread," and George Bush's "Read my lips: no new taxes."
Customer Reviews:
Great survey of Presidential thought and quotes........2001-12-08
This is a fun little quote book that is priced right. It has, in chronological order, quotes from all of the presidents under the Constitution up to Clinton. This is rather a singular book, considering the scope of what the editor has done. Some presidents, such as Lincoln, Kennedy, or Reagan who have been blesses with blarney and gab, have great humorous quotes. Some presidents have a more philosophical bent, such as Jefferson and Madison, so a quote book does not do them justice. Others, such as Grant or Silent Cal Coolidge, are taciturn, so you need to track quotes down with a magnifying glass and metal detector.
This book has ample quotes from all of the then-42 presidents, and is great for people who like quote books, public speakers, politicians, or people looking for bullet-thoughts that hit the target.
