    Book Description

The theoretical understanding of transport properties of semiconductor structures on short length and short time scales, and in the nonlinear high-field regime is of particular relevance for future electronic and optoelectronic materials. In recent years great progress has been made in a variety of aspects. Theory of Transport Properties of Semiconductor Nanostructures presents a state-of-the-art overview of theoretical methods, results, and applications in the field. It contains eleven chapters which are written by leading researchers. This book starts with a tutorial introduction to the subject, then in the following five chapters a hierarchy of different approaches to transport theory is presented, descending from a macroscopic level (quasihydrodynamic simulation) via semiclassical Monte Carlo techniques and cellular automata to a full quantum transport theory covering both Green's functions and density matrix theory. In the last five chapters the formalism is applied to more specific topics which are of great current interest such as transport in mesoscopic structures, chaotic dynamics in lateral superlattices, Bloch oscillations and Wannier-Stark localization, field domain formation in superlattices, and scattering processes in low-dimensional structures.
Theory of Transport Properties of Semiconductor Nanostructures is aimed at physicists, electronic engineers, materials scientists and applied mathematicians. It may be used in research, as a professional reference in microelectronics, optoelectronics, and graduate teaching. This book should be useful not only to graduate students but also to professional scientists working in the field. It attempts to present comprehensive reviews of the most important advances, and often takes a tutorial approach.

            Book Description

This book treats three topics of electronic quantum transport in mesoscopic semiconductor structures: the conductance in strongly interacting and disordered two-dimensional systems and the metal insulator transition, electron transport through quantum dots and quantum rings in the Coulomb-blockade regime, and scanning probe experiments on semiconductor nanostructures at cryogenic temperatures. In addition it gives a brief historical account of electron transport from Ohm's law through transport in semiconductor nanostructures, and a review of cryogenic scanning probe techniques applied to semiconductor nanostructures. Both graduate students and researchers in the field of mesoscopic semiconductors or in semiconductor nanostructures will find this book useful.

            Book Description

Transport in Nanostructures reviews the results of experimental research into mesoscopic devices, and develops a detailed theoretical framework for understanding their behavior. The authors discuss the key observable phenomena in nanostructures, including phase interference and weak localization. They then describe quantum confined systems, transmission in nanostructures, quantum dots and single electron phenomena. Separate chapters cover interference in diffusive transport and temperature decay of fluctuations, and a chapter on nonequilibrium transport and nanodevices concludes the book. Throughout, Ferry and Goodnick interweave experimental results with the appropriate theoretical formalism. Profusely illustrated, the book will be of great interest to graduate students taking courses in mesoscopic physics or nanoelectronics, as well as to researchers working on semiconductor nanostructures or the development of new ultrasmall devices.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars quantum phenomena are arising in small devices.......2006-02-24

As device sizes shrink on chips, earlier assumptions made in modelling electron and hole transport are starting to break down. Ferry explores the many consequences of this. Now that we can use lithography and associated techniques to make devices less than 0.1 micron, quantum effects can arise.

These might include a two dimensional electron gas, where one spatial dimension is essentially suppressed by the heterostructure. Perhaps under the gate of an experimental transistor. Other contexts might be fluctuations in the atomic distribution seen by a transport electron or hole. This might importantly include fluctuations in how dopants are arranged. Leading to regions of differing conductance.

Ferry investigates these and other phenomena like quantum wires and dots, at a level well placed for the graduate student or researcher.

              Book Description

All papers were peer-reviewed. The 19th Winterschool focused mainly on new nanostructured materials, with data presented on functionalized fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, filled and double-wall nanotubes, non-carbon nanotubes, such as BN and MoS2 tubes, and other nanostructures. The direction of nanoelectronics research was explored in depth, and advancements in composite technology and novel applications for nanotubes were discussed. Importantly, participants were updated on the theoretical and experimental determinations of structural and electronic properties as well as on characterization methods for molecular nanostructures.

                    Book Description

In magnetic systems of nano-meter size, the interplay between spin and charge of electrons provides unique transport phenomena. In magnetic superlattices, magnetic and non-magnetic metallic thin films with thickness of the order of one nano-meter are piled-up alternately. Since the discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in these superlattices in 1988, spin dependent transport phenomena in magnetic nanostructures have received much attention from both academic and technological points of view. Ferromagnetic tunnel junctions made of ferromagnetic metal electrodes and a very thin insulating barrier between them are also of current interest as magnetoresistive devices, where the tunneling current depends on the relative orientation of magnetization (TMR). In addition to magnetic superlattices and magnetic tunnel junctions, magnetic granular systems and magnetic dots have been studied extensively as magnetoresistive systems. Edited by two of the world's leading authorities, Spin Dependent Transport in Magnetic Nanostructures introduces and explains the basic physics and applications of a variety of spin-dependent transport phenomena in magnetic nanostructures with particular emphasis on magnetic multilayers and magnetic tunnel junctions.

                      Book Description

In Producing American Races Patricia McKee examines three authors who have powerfully influenced the formation of racial identities in the United States: Henry James, William Faulkner, and Toni Morrison. Using their work to argue that race becomes visible only through image production and exchange, McKee illuminates the significance that representational practice has had in the process of racial construction.
McKee provides close readings of six novels—James’s The Wings of the Dove and The Golden Bowl, Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury and Light in August, and Morrison’s Sula and Jazz—interspersed with excursions into Lacanian and Freudian theory, critical race theory, epistemology, and theories of visuality. In James and Faulkner, she finds, race is represented visually through media that highlight ways of seeing and being seen. Written in the early twentieth century, the novels of James and Faulkner reveal how whiteness depended on visual culture even before film and television became its predominant media. In Morrison, the culture is aural and oral—and often about the absence of the visual. Because Morrison’s African American communities produce identity in nonvisual, even anti-visual terms, McKee argues, they refute not just white representations of black persons as objects but also visual orders of representation that have constructed whites as subjects and blacks as objects.
With a theoretical approach that both complements and transcends current scholarship about race—and especially whiteness—Producing American Races will engage scholars in American literature, critical race theory, African American studies, and cultural studies. It will also be of value to those interested in the novel as a political and aesthetic form.
