Customer Reviews:
another "misleading" art instruction..........2004-05-23
Okay, so now there's the "YOGA OF DRAWING" "New & Improved!" Just like laundry detergent. There must surely be a catchy drawing book title combined with the perennial "ZEN" in the title going to press each month, and it's ridiculous. This book uses YOGA in the title to sell.
[by the way, Carbonetti DOES have an art book with "ZEN" in the title! ]
****** PLEASE KEEP IN MIND...that what I am going to say here, NOT that either art instruction or Yoga instruction is wrong; but that it is counterproductive to combine beginning drawing with notions of YOGA, etc. If you remember this, my review will be studied with greater clarity. *******
The author cannot distinguish between teaching art or teaching metaphysics.
As a result of this MOVING-IN-TWO-DIRECTIONS-AT-ONCE gimmick, students face the dilemma of studying art and metaphysics. Reason might suggest that Art cannot be, de facto, equated with metaphysics. Wisdom might suggest not attempting both simultaneously. Book sales might benefit from the combination; but that's a benefit to the author, not the book buyer.
Any human being is lucky to obtain mastery in a single field of endeavour, let alone presume to have mastered DRAWING and YOGA both; but one of these corny: A-WINK-IS-AS-GOOD-AS-A-NOD drawing titles comes out every month or so, and rarely does one of them offer justification or improvement on basic drawing texts already in print. The author who finds the subject of DRAWING, alone and of itself, inadequate to publish, must join DRAWING with something exotic, foreign and fantastical to con the general public.
The author, by combining religion with "drawing" in the title, suggests that DRAWING, of, and by itself, without reference to personal religion, metaphysics, or New Age hucksterism, is INSUFFICIENT. This is an insult to DRAWING, and art generally, because DRAWING is sufficient unto itself; And any author who must parade their religious beliefs before the general public is merely relying upon a common gimmick to sell books. Selling books, and teaching drawing, are two distinctly different things, and where there is one, you will probably not find the other.
I am very sympathetic to religion, inclusive of YOGA, and personal healing as well. However, the essence of YOGA [and why am I even discussing YOGA in an ART BOOK !!!???!! ] is that it is:
A SYSTEM OF INITIATION.
In Western Society however, it arrives watered-down, as a mere system of physical exercises, (Aerobics, if you will...) without the TEACHER, without spiritual initiation. (You can read precisely what I'm affirming here in Wikipedia. Look up YOGA)
YOGA means "union" and it is about balancing the spiritual and physical.
Also, the idea of YOGA is used in its most general sense by the author, without clarification as to whether it is: RAJA YOGA, KARMA YOGA, BHAKTI YOGA, KUNDALINI YOGA, etc. each of which is suited to specific personality types and are intended to accomplish specific results. Without a teacher suggesting to you what specific YOGA type you need for further development, the student could end up wasting his entire lifetime, or worse, producing harmful results for himself. This is MARKETING American-style at its worst.
Moreover, even in the context of spirituality, the suggestion of YOGA is not an embrace of an entire spiritual system. It is an embrace in part, a most superficial affair. An "act" that wears thin with time.
There are two common fallacies in the mind, that are exploitable here. Both are so subtle as to be generally invisible.
(1) The KNOW-IT-ALL Fallacy:
Here, the authorship implies that if we KNOW-EVERTHING, we can produce powerful art. Certainly, if one "knows about" art, and "knows about" Yoga also, isn't that just about ...everything? Sure it is. Consider how many How-to-Draw books carry on about ZEN, QUANTUM PHYSICS and other powerful and incomprehensible abstractions. The implication is that if we KNOW EVERYTHING we will find the power to produce powerful art.
(2) The BE-IT-ALL, or WHOLENESS or WELLNESS Fallacy:
Here, the authorship implies that, if we are WELL, or are ...HEALED by spiritual practices, then we will be WHOLE. Only if we are WHOLE, can we acquire 'spiritual power' and thus produce powerful art. It just is not so.
These fallacies dwell in the hearts and in the minds of many people, and that vulnerability is exploitable by authors. Hence, they offer languange about HEALING or METAPHYSICS to their readership. Their readership, believing that powerful art is produced by people who are either KNOW-IT-ALLS or BE-IT-ALLS, in some holistic sense, buy these books by the truckloads. What's wrong with this?
Even a little reflection upon the most powerful art known to us, will demonstrate exactly the opposite. Powerful art is not only NOT the product of men and women who lived "balance" in their lives, nor harmony either. They neither KNEW EVERYTHING, nor were WHOLE or WELL. The Rennaissance Masters were not "saints". Van Gogh is a wonderful example of emotional imbalance, and might even have been poisoned by some poisonous batch distillation of the popular new drink, ABSINTHE, and Picasso was such a sensualist that any reference to "spirituality" is laughable. Likewise with Modigliani. Jean-Michel Basquiat died of a heroin overdose. Does the phrase, "Bohemian Lifestyle" ring a bell?
The art instruction Carbonetti offers here is too brief, and too pedestrian to distinguish it from other art instruction that at the very least, is not split into two distinctly different purposes in a single book. This is a case of an author looking for some catchy "angle" that will sell a book.
Worth it just for the pictures.......2001-01-08
But the simple drawing technique is also useful. Great if you want to paint or draw expressively. The pictures are inspiring.
The Yoga of Drawing by Jeanne Carbonetti.......2000-01-19
This is a terrific book for those people who don't have fabulous drawing skills. It helps you understand how you can create wonderful drawings that are expressive even if you don't draw. It's a wonderful companion to Jeanne Carbonetti's other two books.

This latest book of Jeanne Carbonetti's is an absolute Jewel.......1999-06-29
After reading her two other fine books on the technique of watercolor and zen, I didn't think she could come up with another as good as they were,I was so pleasently surprised: "Yoga of Drawing" has surpassed both! Her lovely drawing and simple techniques are easy to understand and most pleasing to the sense of balance and spirit in the presentation of the printed word to the reader. The flow of the spirit and mind are merged together as one to carry one happily through all the pages one by one in the process of understanding. My warmest recommendations.

Windows Vista for Dummies.......2007-09-27
I had just bought a new computer with Vista as the o/s. Since I knew nothing about Vista and in the world of computers I am a dummy I immediately thought of this series "for Dummies" books.
I puchased it from Amazon and it was delivered within the week...even before the computer which I bought arrived. The book is very useful and Amazon is great.
This dummy appreciates plain talk.......2007-09-18
As with all the "Dummies" books I like the way Andy separates the wheat from the chaff by telling you up front which things you really need to know, and which things are nice to know but not necessary. He presents the information in easy to understand plain language and includes enough humor to keep it interesting. I find myself reading on screen help and then referring to "Dummies" to see what it really said.
Windows Vista For Dummies.......2007-08-24
The book has been a tremendious help in navigating thru the Windows Vista format. without it I was ready to chunk the computer.
A MASTERFUL COVERAGE .............2007-07-19
MOVING FROM XP PRO WAS A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE FROM PREVIOUS
ONES. ... I AM SUCCESSFUL IN FINDING ANSWERS TO MY PROBLEMS
... WILL TAKE AWHILE TO GET THRU MY DUMMY BOOK, BUT I AM SURE MOST ANSWERS ARE IN THERE.

Vista Vs. XP.......2007-06-12
I was pleased with Andy's xp for dummies so I bought this one mainly for help installing old xp programs on vista ,but found very little help in that department. The rest of the book is very informative, but if you own the xp book you won't be impressed.

Privacy is almost obsolete. There's an army of data miners out there digging up as much dirt as possible on you, your loved ones, and practically everyone else in the world, but you can plug up the leaks if you know their tricks. Security experts Kevin McKeown and Dave Stern want to show you who's looking, what he or she is looking for, and how that person is getting access to your most private information, starting with Social Security number, address, and employer, and moving up to your buying habits and your children's play habits. Your Secrets Are My Business is a 250-page self-help manual for the paranoid--and if you're not even a little nervous about who might be looking over your shoulder, by the time you've read the first chapter, you'll be eager for McKeown's suggestions. Even that holiest of holies, your credit-card number, is seen by more people than you probably trust--but if you carefully observe your purchasing habits, you can catch fraud before it wrecks your bank account.
The book alternates, on the one hand, between morbidly entertaining stories of McKeown's days in the trenches following the trail of insurance fraud to the Caribbean and digging through Dumpsters to piece together criminal profiles and, on the other, extremely practical tips for ensuring your privacy (even if you aren't a villainous mastermind). The authors keep the reader interested while making their case for a return to old-fashioned notions of private life. It takes quite a bit of energy to protect your personal information, but the freedom from harassment by junk mailers, telephone solicitors, and other unsavory types is worth it. Whether you want to know how to stay in hiding or just want to learn why people care about what car you drive, Your Secrets Are My Business will make your life seem a thousand times more interesting, because you'll see it through the eyes of a professional investigator. --Rob Lightner

Filled with fascinating stories, this is an eye-opening look at the private investigation business and how vulnerable we all are to information and identity thieves.
Customer Reviews:
A Fantastic Read !!! I loved it.......2006-04-05
The man from the Bay area must not have read the same book that I read because I loved it. However, he is entitled to his opinion, albeit a misguided one. (smile)
Yes, some of the information is a bit dated, but we must realize that any information on technology comes with a quick expiration date. Even with a revised edition, the information is dated the moment it goes to print, so let's be fair.
This book is valuable to me for two main reasons: First of all, after reading so many doom and gloom articles on identity theft and fraud, I found this book to be refreshing and timely. It is entertaining yet educational about today's reality of fraud and, gives a look on the newest scourge: Identity Theft, the #1 growing crime in America today, which is quickly becoming the bane of our financial existence.
Secondly, I know a lot of people with their heads still stuck in the sand when it comes to the issue of identity theft, thinking that it would never happen to them. They were like me, scared to death after reading and watching the latest reports.
This book clearly demonstrates how easy it is for us to expose ourselves to the world through our habits and routines. I loved the way Kevin McKeown writes. He weaves entertaining stories and humor on this very serious topic. Although it is a great read, it is not fluff. I felt informed and empowered after reading it, and if that was some of Mr. McKeown's objectives in writing this book, he has clearly met them. I hope Mr. McKeown realizes the great impact this book will have on our society, that is, if we all choose to read and apply it.
I will be purchasing copies for my entire family, because this may be the only book (on this subject) they would actually read.
Complete Waste of Time.......2006-03-10
This book is WAY past its pull date. Full of warnings about not calling back the unrecognized number on your pager (pager?), the ease of using a consumer-grade scanner to evesdrop your cell phone calls (not since the cell network went digital!), and how you should shred paperwork with identifying information on it (duh!).
The over-riding assumption is that anyone with something to hide must be a criminal. The reader is told to vary your hours, commute route, and habits so 'they' can't catch you, because you must be trying to get away with something. For the rest of us law-abiding types, the message is "privacy is obsolete. get over it."
Even worse, the author and the ghost-writer (this is one of those books by someone WITH someone else) must have been paid by the word. It goes on and on and on, just to convey the merest morsel of a factoid.
But worst of all, the author is such a big shot, you're supposed to be really impressed with the names he drops and the James Bond-style exploits he pulled. He walked right into office buildings after-hours and stole bags of trash! He staked out the parking lot of the YMCA residence and guessed that the only non-hoopty in the lot belonged to the embezzeler! He shoulder-surfed the old man in line in front of him at the bank to learn his identity! Shaken-not-stirred stuff, you bet!
I have a lot of books on my shelf, and I don't mind reading a lot of pages to get a little information. But this turkey yielded NO information of use, and so it went right back in the box and back to Amazon.
... and a dirty business it is.......2004-09-27
This book shows you just how simple it is for another person to get information from you and about you, to be used in good or bad ways.
After reading this book, you are sure to change a few of your daily routines and be more concerned about your trash and phone conversations besides other things
A great read - a must have for everyone concerned about privacy
Great advice on protecting yourself!.......2004-09-13
I was unable to put the book down it was so easy to read! Lots of great advice on ways to protect yourself from con artists who want to steal your identity. Who knew that it was so easy to have someone get personal information on anyone? This book is worth reading to protect you and your family!
Good, missing some details.......2004-04-17
Well written book, with great examples. Although, there are some missing details that should have been included. Would have been nice if the author could have included an instance when he was less than perfect. Seems as if some information was left out that could have been easily included. Still a good read.

pretty good.......2004-01-02
This is the first book of this nature i bought, and can honestly say its awesome. It tells you everything you will need to make a novelty license including, different printers, paper, computer software, templates, etc and where to get these items, it goes ionto great detail and walks you step-by-step through the whole process.
A very misleading book.......2002-03-05
This book has nothing to do with other ID. This book is ALL about making fake driver's license.
Granted this book goes into nice detail on how to design and make them but it fails to let you in on some details. New York and Florida have PLASTIC driver's license. With a Florida license it looks like a credit card with a black data strip in the back. The police officers, when they pull you over, will swipe your card through their machines and pull up all of your information. The idea was to save on time when pulling someone over to write up a ticket. With New York licenses, the cards of made of a flexible plastic with the picture digitized on them. Getting your hands on either of these materials would be highly difficult. All it would take is one astute person from that state or someone who regularly sees multiple state IDs to catch on that its not a real ID.
you gotta be kidding.......2002-01-05
Sure, make an outdated license.. get busted and go
to jail. Try drinking at a place that doesn't
ask for ID. Duh?
It's a book about making PERFECT driver's licenses. PERIOD!.......2001-02-12
The previous reviewer is half-right . . . . the book does not even come close to focussing on making "Other IDs". It's all about making fake driver's licenses--PERFECT fake driver's licenses. That's why I bought it and that's why I'm VERY happy with the purchase. If you want to make a fake driver's license, this is the book for you.
The Best Fake ID Book On The Market!.......2001-02-12
This book is excellent. I have read every book on manufacturing false identification out there. No other book guides you through the process of manufacturing fake ID as completely as this one does. From finding the proper supplies, to tips on how to use the ID so you won't get busted, it is all in here. I especially liked the chapter on evaluating your finished ID. If you are even thinking about trying to make a fake ID, BUY THIS BOOK!
