    Book Description

The precipitation of metal oxides from aqueous solutions creates nanoparticles with interesting solid state properties, thus building a bridge between solution chemistry and solid state chemistry. This book is the first monograph to deal with the formation of metal oxides from aqueous solutions with emphasis on the formation and physical chemistry of nanoparticles.

Metal Oxide Chemistry and Synthesis: From Solution to Solid State
    * Provides a comprehensive introduction to the synthesis of finely divided materials
    * Presents the chemistry, physics and applications of these materials
    * Builds a bridge between classical solution chemistry and new developments in solid state chemistry
    * Introduces an important new area in inorganic chemistry
Part I examines the mechanism of condensation of aqueous cations leading to polynuclear species or lattices, and rationalizes the behaviour of cations in precipitation phenomena by identifying pathways from soluble species to solids. The cation complex is also analysed in relation to the synthesis of some technologically interesting polymetallic oxides, e.g. ferroelectric, ferrimagnetic and supraconductor materials.

Part II is devoted to the surface chemistry of oxide particles. The basic concepts relating to the reactivity of the oxide-solution interface are introduced and applied to various adsorption phenomena, such as aggregation, stability of particle size against ripening, etc. These properties are exploited for the synthesis of nanomaterials for a broad range of applictions such as ceramic powders, catalysts and nanocomposites. This will also be of interest to those wishing to understand geochemical and some biological processes.

As well as being invaluable to researchers and postgraduate students of inorganic chemistry, this book will also be appreciated by solid-state chemists, materials scientists and colloid chemists with an interest in metal oxides.

      Book Description

Traditionally, new materials have been developed by empirically correlating their chemical composition, and the manufacturing processes used to form them, with their properties. Until recently, metallurgists have not used quantum theory for practical purposes. However, the development of modern density functional methods means that today, computational quantum mechanics can help engineers to identify and develop novel materials.

Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers describes new approaches to the modelling of disordered alloys that combine the most efficient quantum-level theories of random alloys with the most sophisticated numerical techniques to establish a theoretical insight into the electronic structure of complex materials such as stainless steels, Hume-Rothery alloys and silicates. The practical success of these approaches to applications in all of these areas are covered in detail. The new EMTO-CPA method is detailed, including its application in alloys to model structural stability and elastic properties of random alloys of arbitrary composition and the effect of alloying elements on elastic stiffnesses stacking fault energies and structural parameters. The EMTO-CPA method makes new approaches to computational alloy design feasible. Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers shows how the technique will soon allow materials engineers to become "quantum blacksmiths".

Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers will interest researchers and postgraduate students in materials science and engineering, solid-state physics and applied quantum mechanics.

        Book Description

Complex oxide materials, especially the ABO 3-type perovskite materials, have been attracting growing scientific interest due to their unique electro-optical properties, leading to photorefractive effects that form the basis for such devices as holographic storage, optical data processing and phase conjugation. The optical and mechanical properties of non-metals are strongly affected by the defects and impurities that are unavoidable in any real material. Nanoscopically sized surface effects play an important role, especially in multi-layered ABO 3 structures, which are good candidates for high capacity memory cells.
The 51 papers presented here report the latest developments and new results and will greatly stimulate progress in high-tech technologies using perovskite materials.

            Book Description

Kinetics of Metal-Gas Interactions at Low Temperatures is devoted to the formation of a natural oxide film. This few nm thick surface layer is produced instantaneously if oxygen or water vapor is present in the gas atmosphere. It is responsible for the corrosion behavior, for wear and friction of metallic materials, as well as for hydrogen embrittlement or poisoning of catalytic surface reactions. Oxidation impedes experiments in surface sciences and production processes in modern thin-film technology. It can reliably be avoided only if expensive ultra-high vacuum techniques are applied. This monograph presents an introduction to the subject in a tutorial style. It demonstrates how complex metal-gas interactions can be analyzed by standard procedures of chemical kinetics.

              Book Description

This book presents the fundamentals of novel gate dielectrics that are being introduced into semiconductor manufacturing to ensure the continuous scaling of CMOS devices. As this is a rapidly evolving field of research we choose to focus on the materials that determine the performance of device applications. Most of these materials are transition metal oxides. Ironically, the d-orbitals responsible for the high dielectric constant cause severe integration difficulties, thus intrinsically limiting high-k dielectrics. Though new in the electronics industry many of these materials are well-known in the field of ceramics, and we describe this unique connection. The complexity of the structure-property relations in TM oxides requires the use of state-of-the-art first-principles calculations. Several chapters give a detailed description of the modern theory of polarization, and heterojunction band discontinuity within the framework of the density functional theory. Experimental methods include oxide melt solution calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry, Raman scattering and other optical characterization techniques, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Many of the problems encountered in the world of CMOS are also relevant for other semiconductors such as GaAs. A comprehensive review of recent developments in this field is thus also given. The book will be of interest to those actively engaged in gate dielectric research, and to graduate students in Materials Science, Materials Physics, Materials Chemistry, and Electrical Engineering.

Returning from a Kenyan safari in 1932, Ernest Hemingway quickly devised a literary trophy to add to his stash of buffalo hides and rhino horns. To this day, Green Hills of Africa seems an almost perverse paean to the thrills of bloodshed, in which the author cuts one notch after another in his gun barrel and declares, "I did not mind killing anything." Four years later, however, Hemingway came up with a more accomplished spin on his African experiences--a pair of them, in fact, which he collected with eight other tales in The Snows of Kilimanjaro. The title story is a meditation on corruption and mortality, two subjects that were already beginning to preoccupy the 37-year-old author. As the protagonist perishes of gangrene out in the bush, he recognizes his own failure of nerve as a writer:
Now he would never write the things that he had saved to write until he knew enough to write them well. Well, he would not have to fail at trying to write them either. Maybe you could never write them, and that was why you put them off and delayed the starting. Well he would never know, now.
In the story, at least, the hero gets some points for stoic acceptance, as well as an epiphanic vision of Kilimanjaro's summit, "wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun." (The movie version is another matter: Gregory Peck makes it back to the hospital, loses a leg, and is a better person for it.) But Hemingway's other great white hunter, in "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," is granted a less dignified exit. This time the issue is cowardice, another of Papa's bugaboos: poor Francis is too wimpy to face down a wounded lion, let alone satisfy his treacherous wife in bed. Yet he does manage a last-minute triumph before dying--an absolute assertion of courage--which makes the title a hair less ironic than it initially seems. No wonder these are two of the highest-caliber (so to speak) tales in the Hemingway canon. --Bob Brandeis

Nothing, Men Without Women, and The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories, this collection includes "The Killers," the first of Hemingway's mature stories to be accepted by an American periodical; the autobiographical "Fathers and Sons," which alludes, for the first time in Hemingway's career, to his father's suicide; "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," a "brilliant fusion of personal observation, heresay, and invention," wrote Hemingway's biographer, Carlos Baker; and the title story itself, of which Hemingway said: "I put all the true stuff in," with enough material, he boasted, to fill four novels. Beautiful in their simplicity, startling in their originality, and unsurpassed in their craftsmanship, the stories in this volume highlight one of America's master storytellers at the top of his form.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Stories.......2007-08-24

This is a good collection of some of Hemmingway's short stories. They are all brilliant. It is Hemmingway though so you wouldn't expect any less. Excellent reading.

4 out of 5 stars Hemingway at his best and otherwise.......2007-05-16

There are two exceptional stories in this volume: The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short Happy Life of Francis Mccomber. Both of these stories satisfied my need for other places and experiences while exploring the familiar ground of long term, mildly satisfactory relationships. The other stories are hit and miss, but still they are Hemingway's and so, if you like his work as I do, they hit the mark more often than they fall short.

5 out of 5 stars Papa's Life Shines through his Work.......2007-01-23

If, ever, you have wanted to travel along with Papa (Hemingway) along his many travels and adventures, this collection of stories is the ideal way to rest your soles in his footsteps.

"Kilimanjaro" in particular, transports you to a bygone era of safaris not with telephoto lenses, but with long rifle barrels. Primarily, though, it is an introspective look at one's life and the worth that one ascribes to his experiences while he is ready to close his eyes for the final time.

Hemingway captures the moment when a dying man's recollections either turn into regrets or points of pride and self actualization.

                5 out of 5 stars A Good Collection.......2006-04-23

I read this book many, many years ago and it is still fresh in my mind. Hemingway is an essential writer. If you haven't read this book, you should do so as soon as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Sort stories - about as good as they can get!.......2005-10-22

I am usually not a short story aficionado, but I love Ernest Hemingway, so I had to read these. Also, Hemingway thought that his story "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" was about as good as anything he had written. And he, of course was right. This story on its own has about everything anyone could ask for when reading a tale. The emotions and character portrayal are remarkable considering that Hemingway put them within the confines of a short story. The best thing about anything that Hemingway writes though is that his stories are based on his actual experiences. And his "bare bones" method of storytelling cuts through everything and gets right to the meat of any of his issues. The stories in this collection are a bit graphic because there are quite a few about big game hunting and also about rum running in the gulf between Cuba and Florida, but they are each masterpieces in their own right. I for one want to read everything Hemingway ever wrote. To my way of thinking he is one of the best English-speaking writers we have ever had.

                Book Description

“It came with a rush; not as a rush of water nor of wind; but of a sudden evil-smelling emptiness. . .” A flamboyant, hard-drinking, ruthless and womanizing world adventurer comes face-to-face with the one antagonist he cannot conquer: his own ignoble and imminent death. . . .Written in 1938, The Snows of Kilimanjaro is a classic distillation of the themes Ernest Hemingway obsessively explored throughout his writing career. When Harry, the central character, goes on safari to “work the fat off his mind,” his ambitions are cut short when a terrible accident leaves him facing his ultimate death and weighing the meaning of his life. Hemingway's brilliant prose is given a penetrating and moving reading by Charlton Heston in an audio that only deepens in meaning with each listening.

4 out of 5 stars Good story, good read.......2001-02-05

This cassette contains just the one short story. The story shows Hemingway at his best. The usual protagonists: a "damaged" man and a uni-dimensional woman. However, here he invests the man (who narrates the tale) with considerable insight into himself and into life. I liked the writing far more than "Farewell to Arms" for example, where nearly identical characters are protagonists.

Heston's reading is fairly good. Better than his reading of the "Old Man and the Sea" which I thought he really ruined. While good, his reading is not excellent (hence the 4 stars). He does not modulate his voice sufficiently between characters so it's difficult at times to know who's talking when.

5 out of 5 stars The Snows of Kilimanjaro.......2000-05-17

Classic Hemingway. Great depth in describing the characters and the situation. Like his other works, it is not surprising that he received a Pulitzer.

Heston did justice to the characters in this audio book, just as he does in his screen acting. It was an enjoyable read during my long commute.

With the encouraging success of the recent box-office smash, American Beauty, I believe props need to be given to whom their due: Ernest Hemingway. No, he was not involved in the actual movie, but I could not help but notice the similarities between the movie and the "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," which also happens to be my favorite Hemingway short. Americans feel alone and without control of their own lives in the late 20th century, and as Hemingway proves in this strong story, Americans have been feeling this way for a long time. Short and to the point, "Macomber" delivers a one-two punch that cannot be forgotten. Get up and take control of your own life; just make sure you're aware of what you're entering the bush in chase of.

I loved the book and the movie. It just reminded me of Key West, which I love, and it gave me a comforting and happy feeling all the way through. It is incredible the way the old man never gives up with his courage to fight the big fish. The ending was perfect when he finds security in his hut and with the little boy. He sure deserved it.

The key to understanding Hemingway's work is to view it as a broad allegory on the sociopolitical environment in which he lived and wrote. On a purely literal level, one could view "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" as a campy yet endearing story of one man's search for the perfect ski slope (Kilimanjaro) or the perfect hunting trip(Macomber). But if you look at the mountain as, say, the U.S. economy and the elephant as, say, the gold standard and Francis' wife as, say, the War Powers Act, the story takes on an entirely different meaning. And the ancient sherpa's diatribe on the Securities Exchange Commission becomes an extremely poignant and brilliantly crafted fulcrum on which to balance the story's central metaphor.

It's difficult to write new commentary about a classic story, so I will only add what I think made the whole story worthwhile--the epigraph at the beginning of the story.

"Kilimanjaro is a snow covered mountain 19,710 fee high, and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Maisai 'Ngaje Ngdi,' the House of God. Close to the western summit there is the dead and frozen carcuss of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude."

Call me morbid, but I liked the concept of hearing the present as well as day-dreaming thoughts of a dying man. While I would sometimes get lost in the rambling dreams, I especially liked how the writer developed the present situation in terms of where he was, who he had become, and who he was with.

The thoughts in between the spoken dialogue paints a glaringly introspective picture of a man and his relationship with a woman. I believed his perspective. I felt that he was seeing the relationship through a honest and real lens of death, while she seemed to be in a living shroud of "love" born out of her need and convenience. It is a rather typical portrait, a woman clinging to a man for emotional security and a man clinging to a woman out of a sense of failure to do anything else. The way he describes their relationship is telling about who he is: bare - real - a dying dog who wonders when and how he lost his bite. He can still perform the motions of everyday living, for her sake, but his truth is inescapable in his head. I found this relationship, and the discussion about passion vs. wealth and his reasons for choosing one over the other very intriguing.

What did the writer feel was left unwritten? We don't know what he wrote in the first place, maybe more of the same. It is written on the cover of my book that Hemingway said "I put all the true stuff in" this short story; with enough material to fill up four novels. Perhaps this was a story born out of a "writers block" period that felt like death to his spirit.

Why did the leopard go up the mountain and freeze to death? Not for food, not curiosity. Perhaps out of a desperate fling, like the writers reason for coming to Africa - to shake of the excess wealth and find his passion again. Instead, he found death and unrealized dreams. The writer found stories left unwritten, the panther a summit unreached, for us: something different.

My vote on one of the most interesting passages from the story: "We must all be cut out for what we do, he thought. However you make your living is where your talent lies. He had sold vitality in one form or another, all his life and when your affections are not too involved you give much better value for the money. He had found that out but he would never write that, now, either. No, he would not write that, although it was well worth writing."

Hemingway perhaps questioned wether or not he was supposed to be a writer - at the same time, however, he felt he had figured out one of the keys to be a successful writer: "A message bogged down with the writers own feelings and partialities decreases its merit or value". He seemed to feel that writers should retell their observations, without "making the waters muddy" with their own attachments. Yet if he wasn't meant to be a writer, if he didn't have "talent" or wasn't "cut out" for what he did, he wouldn't have understood that. So in the end, he feels vindicated...

Of course, he could have meant that affections were the death of vitality?
