Book Description
Spurred by the development of high-current, high-energy relativistic electron beams this books delves into the foundations of a device and geometry independent theoretical treatment of a large collection of interacting and radiating electron bunches. Part I deals with the basics of the radiation emission of a single charged particle, paying particular attention to the effect of radiation reaction and dwelling on the corresponding well-known paradoxes. Part II investigates the collective behaviour of a high-density electron bunch where both discrete and continous beam modelling is explored. Part III treats the application to modern systems while still keeping the treatment as general as possible.
This book will be mandatory reading for anyone working on the foundations of modern devices such as free electron lasers, plasma accelerators, synchroton sources and other modern sources of bright, coherent radiation with high spectral density.

Book Description
This CD-ROM brings together the complete proceedings data presented at nine Beam Instrumentation Workshops held from 1989 through 2000. These workshops placed particular emphasis on solving practical problems associated with accelerator instrumentation; this responded to the need of participants to focus on the engineering level rather than theoretical presentations. This convenient single disc provides researchers the opportunity to search across all proceedings simultaneously, and puts a significant amount of groundbreaking beam instrumentation information within reach. The proceedings of each Beam Instrumentation Workshop (formerly "Accelerator Instrumentation Workshop") have previously been published in book form as part of the AIP Conference Proceedings series. The following 9 volumes are included in this collection: - Volume 212, Upton, New York, 1989 - Volume 229, Batavia, Illinois, 1990 - Volume 252, Newport News, Virginia, 1991 - Volume 281, Berkeley, California, 1992 - Volume 319, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1993 - Volume 333, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 1994 - Volume 390, Argonne, Illinois, 1996 - Volume 451, Stanford, California, 1998 - Volume 546, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2000

Book Description
Classical Relativistic Electrodynamics presents an advanced course of classical electrodynamics with application to the generation of high-power coherent radiation in the microwave to optical-wave regions. Specifically, it provides readers with the basics of advanced electromagnetic theory and relativistic electrodynamics, guiding them step by step through the theory of free-electron lasers. The theoretical treatment throughout this book is fully developed by means of the usual three-dimensional vector calculus. This book can be recommended as a graduate-level textbook or a reference book in the fields of advanced electromagnetic theory, relativistic electrodynamics, beam physics and plasma sciences.

RESEARCH TRENDS in PHYSICS ( V. Stefan ,Series Editor) Physics in Canada Vol.49,No5, p393;November 1993. La Physique au Canada,Novembre1993. Edited by Nobel Laureate, A.M. Prokhorov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, this book is based on an invited Symposium organized by the La Jolla International School of Physics, Inst. for Advanced Physics Studies, La Jolla, California, in February, 1991. It covers theoretical, experimental, and technological problems addressed by prominent researchers from around the world. Contributors in the series - all of whom were invited - were encouraged by the organizers to go beyond the narrow confines of their work and reflective broader issues. This is reflected in the incisive essays which review critical issues, critique the field's status, and point the way toward new avenues and trends in research. V. Stefan of the Institute for Advanced Physics Studies, who is the series editor, has put together an excellent volume which documents the latest thinking and future trends in research. The topic covered in these essays are free electron lasers, microwave generators, relativistic beam physics, radiation and energy physics, as well as accelerators and synchrotron radiation physics. From the material presented in this volume, it is clear that the goal set by the symposium in this volume was met. The symposium brought together some of the most prominent researchers from around the world. Their discussion indicate the status of some of the areas covered and the future trend in these fields. The interdisciplinary nature of the material will make this book valuable to both veteran researchers and those new to the field.

The torture and hell of adolescence has rarely been captured as clearly as it is in this classic diary by an anonymous, addicted teen. Lonely, awkward, and under extreme pressure from her "perfect" parents, "Anonymous" swings madly between optimism and despair. When one of her new friends spikes her drink with LSD, this diarist begins a frightening journey into darkness. The drugs take the edge off her loneliness and self-hate, but they also turn her life into a nightmare of exalting highs and excruciating lows. Although there is still some question as to whether this diary is real or fictional, there is no question that it has made a profound impact on millions of readers during the more than 25 years it has been in print. Despite a few dated references to hippies and some expired slang, Go Ask Alice still offers a jolting chronicle of a teenager's life spinning out of control.
Book Description
Alice
COULD BE ANYONE.
Alice
COULD BE SOMEONE YOU KNOW.
Alice

With over a million copies in print, Go Ask Alice has become a classic of our time. This powerful real-life diary of a teenager's struggle with the seductive -- often fatal -- world of drugs and addiction tells the truth about drugs in strong and authentic voice. Tough and uncompromising, honest and disturbing -- and even more poignant today -- Go Ask Alice is page-turning and provocative reading.

Customer Reviews:
A misleading blah........2007-09-29
I read this book twice- at the age of about 16, and now, three years later. All I remembered from reading it for the first time was that I got mildly scared of peanut brittles (*the peanut brittle is spiked with acid at the end of the story, which Alice then ingests by accident and has the worst trip of her life*) and fate. I also for some reason was thinking that Alice was mostly on meth the whole time- until reading the book again today. What I hate most about it now is a complete misleading about drugs: basically mixing them all up in the same pile and labeling as "BAAAAD STUFF". Yeah, the book kinda describes the LSD giving you "trips" and hallucinations, and amphetamines making you "go faster", etc, but it labels all drugs as equally dangerous, addictive and violent. This is so not true! LSD, for example, is not addictive (no more than internet, speaking of psychologicall addiction); you cannot overdose on it, unless you eat like a whole pound of the stuff; life without it does not seem "dull and pointless", and it is relatively safe, if used properly. (The extremely bad, skin-tearing trip Alice had at the end of her diary does not seem realistic. The author tries to pull it off with killing both of Alice's grandparents, to induce stress for her, but still, the whole thing is way over the top. It looks much more like tortures of a heavy crystal meth addict.) Then, while marijuana is relatively addictive, using it does not lead to unpredictable, regrettable consequences, such as casual and unprotected sex with unknown people. Then, how come Alice gets "addicted" to acid, but not to heroin or other heavier drugs? That would make SO much more sense!
Another annoying aspect of the book is the old lady trying to sound like a teen. "Yes, yes, yes!" and "horrid, terrible awful" are the two basic moods for all the journal entries. The girl is either super happy or extemely sad and angry; rarely there's something in between- unrealistic! Then, what kind of real teenager would repeat, for example the word "glad" four times in a row in her diary? Also, REAL girls would focus somewhat more on defining ALL their problems (including grades, gossip, boys, etc), and somewhat less on a) repeating words/thoughts/phrases over and over (come on, it is WRITTEN DOWN, she's not just SPEAKING it!); and b) jotting down all insignificant details such as "we spent the whole evening decorating the stereo in such-and-such particular way". I mean, who cares? Also, REAL girls would probably not ever mention that someone raped them (or if they have the guts to, it would spill over many pages). Just think logically, what kind of girl would want to reread her diary and see an entry that goes somewhat like this: "Today was the worst day of my life. I got raped".
Well, anyways, my two cents are in for this book, and my two stars are all I am willing to give to it (one for good intentions, and one for being quite realistic from time to time). I'd say its worth your time and money (if you can find one for 50 cents, and since it will take you only about a hour to finish up the whole thing). As for the correct drug education, go watch "Requiem for a Dream" or read Erowid (real drug experiences by real people), and don't let yourself be mislead!
I DONT THINK I WANNA ASK ALICE.......2007-09-14
OKAY SO I HEARD THE NAME OF THIS BOOK ALOT AND I READ THE REVIEWS AND EVERYTHING BEFORE I READ IT....BUT MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE READ CRANK AFTER I READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE THE STORY IT SELF WAS GOOD AND I FELT SORRY FOR HER BUT THE BOOK WAS A REAL BORE AND I NEVER REALLY SAID THAT ABOUT ANY BOOK I EVER READ BUT IT GOT TO POINTS WHERE THE BOOK WAS REALLLLY BORING BUT THERE WERE EXCITING PARTS OF THE BOOK AND THEY DIDNT LAST VERY LONG... BUT I HAD TO MAKE MYSELF KEEP READING BECAUSE I NEVER QUIT ON A BOOK.....BUT HER STORY ITSELF WAS GOOD AND SOME TERRIBLE THINGS HAPPENED TO HER BUT IT DIDNT KEEP MY FULL ATTENTION
Mildly Entertaining / Teaches Some Good Morals.......2007-09-07
This is about a young girl and her tragic experiences with drugs. It teaches some helpful morals. The 'editor' claims that this a real life diary, but both internal and external evidence shows this is more likely a fabrication. I'm sure, though, that it wouldn't be too hard to find a real life situation that turned out just as tragic. Judged as a work of fiction, this book contains a rather weak ending (the conclusion depends too much on inference). It is also rather "graphic" for typical moralistic fiction.
*SPOILER* Not as Good as I Thought.........2007-07-06
(Note that this is the daughter of the person who owns this user account)
Let's just say two things - "Crank" was better, and this book has 214 pages in it and it got boring on page 114.
It has a bunch of twists and turns - first shes happy, then shes sad, then happy, then sad, then happy but gets tricked in taking LSD (again) by eating peanuts in a random persons home? Seriously.. and then she gets sent into a mental institution just for having bad hallucinations. Then she's home again and every thing's just peachy .. and then she dies? No sense at all. Read "CRANK"!!!! It is SOOOO much better!!
go ask alice .......2007-05-24
when i read the book go aks alice i thoughtnit was great. i would recomend this book to most people but i really think this book is more of a teenager thing than an adult book.that is beacuse this book talks about all the struggles and pressures that teenagers go through.also,it is a real diary that someone wrote so all of the actions she talks about are non-fiction and actually happend.i really belive that this book is awesome becaue of three resons.
1)she is a real person with real problems
2)she is very vivid in her diary and it gives so much info and details
3)she talks about how people start just a little bit of drugs the get adicted to it later on and then cants stop.
so i hope after reading this i hope u decide to read Go Ask Alice by anonymous.
i promise you one thing you wont be able to put this book down untill you finish it.
thank you for your time

Book Description
The unknown sister of novelist Henry James, Jr. shows herself to be a formidable individual in her own right.
Customer Reviews:
A Cult Item.......2004-08-16
Alice James interests many as not only the sister of two great writers but as an example of a writer struggling to make her voice heard against the torrents of misogyny and dreadful illness. Her diary is ably edited by Leon Edel, and contains a lot of shrewd portrait-painting of her brothers (including the third, not-famous brother who sparkles throughout this diary, even though he left this life without a shadow), as well as some general philosophy. She is ever ready to remind herself that she is a child of privilege, and yet a trace of self-pity remains, like some stubborn stain that proves unexpectedly difficult to scrub out.
"What an awful loss it is that we can't see our own follies," James writes, "they must be so much more exquisite than any one's else, but as vanity is what keeps the world agoing, after one or two convulsive laughs, the game would certainly be up!
"Shall I ever have any convulsive laughs again! Ah, me! I fear me not. I had such a feast for 34 years that I can't complain." Anyone who wants to know about American writing at the turn of the century should get a copy of this book. "What difference is there in the spiritual essence of two viragoes fighting on their door-steps over a coal-ticket, left or not left by the district visitor and that of two great ladies at daggers drawn over their seat at some function or other?--all simply scrambling for something they haven't got."
