I just received this book and one glance through it makes me wish I hadn't ordered it. This book is definietly for beginners.
Excellent banner making reference.......1999-04-16
Although I did not get her first book, I recently purchased this one in hopes of figuring out how to make a banner for our church. This book covers it all. It talks about fabric choice, design considerations, using Christian symbols, words, colors, how to make tab hangers, poles, tassels, the works. There are 4 pages of beautiful color examples of banners that people have made (32 of them). She encourages the reader to design their own. I can't wait to get started.

Careful Exegesis plus Eye-Opening Application.......2007-04-14
Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones: Romans: An Exposition of Chapter 10. Saving Faith. Edinburgh: The Banner of Truth Trust, 1997. ISBN 0 85151 737 4. xi, 400 pages. Finely bound hardback with illustrated dustjacket.
The late Welsh evangelical preacher Martyn Lloyd-Jones delighted in what he termed the "exposition" of the Scriptures. By that he meant returning week by week to a selected passage and examining it verse by verse, phrase by phrase in order not only to establish the meaning (that would have been mere dry exegesis) but also to apply this meaning to his hearers (and readers). His thirty-five expository sermons on Romans 10 preached from May 1963 to May 1964 and printed here are no exception to the rule: In his first sermon, Lloyd-Jones carefully explains the context of the chapter, seeing it as a kind of extended commentary on the last verses of Romans 9 (which he had expounded previously: see God's Sovereign Purpose, 9:1-33 (Romans Series)). Then he offers an overview of the whole chapter before launching into a detailed analysis. But if that sounds dry and technical, just read on into the next chapter which, in my opinion, is worth the price of the whole book: Lloyd-Jones there examines the whole question of "zeal" and lists a number of extremely valuable tests by which true zeal can be differentiated from false zeal. And so on in the whole book: careful exegesis is combined with powerful application, making this volume both a mine of information and an invaluable source of edification for the Christian believer. Following Paul, Lloyd-Jones goes on to discuss the nature of true righteousness; the content of saving faith (namely the Biblical message about the death, resurrection and Lordship of Christ); the conditions of saving faith (belief from the heart and public confession of salvation); the missionary charter and the position of those who have never heard the Gospel; the calling and the message of the Christian preacher; the relationship between 'hearing' and 'obeying'; reasons for the rejection of the Gospel by the Jews; and last but not least, there is a tremedously important chapter on the danger of dead orthodoxy and resistance to the Holy Spirit among evangelical Christians.
Not all Lloyd-Jones's sermons are equally meaty or of equal value, but I suspect that even his weaker messages contain a good deal more spiritual nourishment than most of what the average Protestant, at least here in Europe, gets to hear on a Sunday morning. And some of the chapters here are real eye-openers. I warmly recommend this book to all who are interested in a thorough acquaintance with the teaching of the New Testament and of the Apostle Paul in particular. It would no doubt be advisable to read the whole series in order, as I am currently doing.

A fasconating account of the early years of Old Rhinbeck.......2001-10-21
This book portrays the early years of The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome from the stand point of one of the early participants of Cole Palen's Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. It is a MUST for thoes who are intersted in Old Rhinebeck or any aviation inthusest.
E. Gordon Bainbridge writes about how Cole started the Airdrome, how the airshows came to be, and how Gordon helped Cole out with the Aerodrome.
Over all it is a great book about one mans dream turned to reality.

A big disappointment.......2002-02-24
I too bought this book because it had Richard Wright as the author. I read with great appreciation his Native Son a long time ago, and just recently read Black Boy and found it very attetion-holding. Savage Holiday is ridiculously plotted and the central character is extremely annoying. The long account of his running around naked in his apartment house was irritating and frustrating to me. All he had to do was hold his newspaper in front of himself and go to an apartment and tell what happened and the manager could have been summoned so he could get in his apartment. I know, the guy was nuts, as we see as the story moves along, but I was very unenthused by this book. I can see why it was ignored by critics when it came out in 1954.
Great Book. Made me like richard wright.......2000-09-26
When I first bought this book i didn't know who richard Wright was or what he had accomplished. I just say it and thought it was interesting sounding so i bought it. I can honestly say it was one of the best books I have ever read (along with Native Son) and it is the reason I purchased Wright's other books. A must have for Richard wright fans, literature fans, and good book fans!!!
A refreshing work from Wright no one has heard of........2000-08-11
I guess I get to inagurate the review of Savage Holiday. I saw this book purely accidentally in a used-books store in Ithaca, NY. Seeing Wright's name on it I didn't hesitate to purchase it, since he was and still is, one of the most influential writers to me. Wright treads on familiar territory in this book, but with a different setting. For the first time, Wright creates white characters in his work. The attempt of an author to step inside the skin of any human being is admirable, and the ability to do so is praiseworthy. Psychologically it is as powerful as The Outsider or Native Son. Here is a man whose desires have gone unfulfilled, who stifles his insticts until they lead him into trouble. Quintessential existential dread from Wright.

Great ideas!.......2002-09-24
Are you one of those people who requires paint-by-number picture kits, and dotes on full step-by-step Martha-style craft instructions? If so, don't bother with this book. If, however, you are capable of finding information on basic techniques once you realize that you want to try them, the many different great ideas in this book are just the thing! I would never have thought to tie-BLEACH a garment before dyeing it, for wonderful lightening-bolt effects, for example. All I need is good pictures of good project ideas, with a little info on what types of techniques and materials to use; I don't need someone to hold my hand and murmur reassurances as I go along. I was amazed to see another review of this book dismissing it for doing what it does so well!
A picture book.......2000-04-16
This book is great for looking at great designs but hardly one to use to create a t-shirt. There is no in depth directions to make any of these t-shirts. I was interested in making new designs for my t-shirts (tie dye) and this book is totally useless. You really have to guess at what they are doing since there are not many directions to follow. For example: They tell you to use c-clamps to secure it between wood- well how is it positioned, what size wood ? Everything is very vague in the directions. They show only one picture of folding a t-shirt and that doesn't show you anything of how to position it. I have been tie dying for 10 years and hoped for more in depth directions to create new designs. I guess it is back to the drawing board for me. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this book. I can go to many web sites to look at great designs if I just wanted a collection of pictures. Very disapointed in this one......

Nice books for ideas.......2000-12-01
This a nice simple book on how to start decorating your T-shirts. The instructions are simple but I would have had the sample pictures near the instructions instead of at the end. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it for beginners, it inspires you to give is a go.
Big on Ideas! Basic Techniques........1999-08-03
Interested in designing your own T-shirts but can't decide between techniques? This is a fun book --providing basic techniques for tie-dye, marbling, batik, stamping, and more. The illustrations are wonderful and inspiring. The instructions are really simple. Within days of purchasing this book I was dyeing and painting a handful of hand-me-down baby clothes. Serious fun!

This book is a combination of two earlier Lark books, The Great T-Shirt Book: Make Your Own Spectacular, One-Of-A-Kind Designs, by Carol Taylor (1992), and The Ultimate T-Shirt Book: Creating Your Own Unique Designs, by Deborah Morgenthal (1998), copied word-for-word and photograph-for-photograph. It contains almost no new material at all.
Oddly, the copyright page gives no indication that the book consists of previously published material. Even the names of the two original authors, Carol Taylor and Deborah Morgenthal, do not appear anywhere on or in Chris Rankin's book, not even on the copyright page.
Publishing old books under a new name, with a new author, amounts to fraud against buyers who previously purchased the earlier books. We are going to have to be cautious about anything published by Lark Books.
Those who did not purchase the earlier books will find this book to be useful and inspiring. It contains a large number number of well-photographed, beautiful, professional-looking examples of how to paint, tie-dye, stamp, marble, batik, and screen print t-shirts. The instructions are not detailed enough to be fully useful, but they are good enough to decide whether a technique sounds intriguing enough to bother finding more reliable instructions for it.
