Disgusted With the Old Science Paradigm.......2001-07-20

Obviously Thomas Brophy has been, or will be, ostrasized by the scientific community as he is a New Thinker of the New Thinkers. How I envy him his ease with and knowledge of science, esoteric spirituality, dogmatic religion, philosophy, literature and the arts. His ability and willingness to express himself are unprecedented in the scientific and spiritual subjects, and his book is magnificent. His criticism of the so called old paradigm scientists and other fundamentalists, is right on the mark and I, among many others in the world, are bored and disgusted with those unwilling to investigate the potential existance of nonmaterial realms. It reminds me of a quote from Herbert Spencer, "There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance--that principal is contempt prior to investigation." As others have said, "Science progresses funeral by funeral." This is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read and I'm waiting in anticipation of more books by authors such as Dr. Brophy who have an inquisitiveness about the unexplained, unresearched world(s)/universe, and a willingness to call a spade a spade. The fundamentalists will not like this book, but then of course, they will read it with closed minds. If you are searching for a greater understanding of the unseen and unrecognized, and a deep and thoughtful book on spirituality, you will love this book.

A MUST READ.......1999-11-24

For me the book provided a new grasp of the essence of classical science, together with a vision of where science may now be heading. That vision, as developed in the book, is more intriguing than I could ever have anticipated. It is a must read for both the dreamer and the hard-nosed realist.

A must have for the Professional Questioned Document Examiner.......2005-10-24

This first edition is a must have for the professional Questioned Document Examner. Excellent details in pen, ink, paper, indented writing Forensice Document Examination. Some methods of ink and pen identification qre not even covered in most Forensic Questioned Document Books, Not in the detail covered here. How do you know if an envelope has been steamed opened and reglued? What methods of page substitution are not covered in other tests? How can you quickly identify, beyond watermarks, if a page may not be consistent with others in a corporate agreement? Mr Ellen is truly a master Forensic Document Examiner. In my opinion he is the modern day version of Albert Osborn. My Osborn's Questioned Documents was the first complete book on Questioned Document Examination. It is dated now but Mr. Ellen's book covers it all. A great book. A must have for the 21st century.

The 1st and 2nd editon should not be confused with the 3rd edition. The 1st and 2nd edition give great technical detail as to methodology in use of Forensic Equipment, VSC-1, ESDA, IR/UV, ink and paper analysis. The 3rd edition answers methodology in visual examination as to methods of construction,disquised writing, simulations,significance of similarities and differences. The 3rd edition is more general than the previous editions but an excellent resource for the Forensic Questioned Document Examiner in training and as a refresher for the seasoned Forensic Questioned Document Examiner. It is also a must have for the Forensic Questioned Document Examiner Library.

A strong introductory textbook........2002-05-13

I have used this book as a text in the legal-writing course I teach. It is one of the most widely used and respected legal-writing texts available. Its strengths are that it is clear, easy-to-read, and practical. It lays out the basics of legal analysis, plus it explains how to write a traditional, objective legal memo and a persuasive legal brief. It always gets to the point quickly, and it covers all the important topics a law student will need in a first-year course on legal writing.

One minor weakness is that some of the sample documents in the appendix do not follow the principles explained in the text.

As for the complaint from "A reader from Honolulu" that the book does not cite authority, that's an odd concern. Very few, if any, legal-writing texts cite authority. What would they cite to? Other legal-writing texts (their competition)? What you are buying when you buy a legal-writing text is the expertise of the authors, not a compilation of research on legal writing. I know that these authors are experts, and the advice in this text is practical and effective.

A lawyer's biggest errors.......2002-02-21

Every lawyer knows better than to simply say what they think, give an opinion, or offer unfounded advice. "Don't tell me what you THINK, tell me the LAW!" This book makes that error on a regular basis. You'll get lots of information on how to write and present arguments, but none of it is actually founded on anything. Indeed, much of it flies in the face of what psychology has told us of the effects of primacy and recency. Another lawyer's error that simply underscores how baseless this book is? No citations.

This is one of the best textbooks I have ever read - I savored every word! Trust me, you should buy it.

It discusses the federal and state court systems; statutory law; case law; digests; A.L.R.; legal encyclopedias, periodicals, treatises, and restatements; proper Bluebook and ALWD citation; Shepardizing (an enitre chapter); how to use both Lexis and Westlaw; and useful instructions on how to write legal correspondence, legal memorandums, and briefs.

I have a BA in Political Science from UC Berkeley and am currently enrolled in the ABA-approved Paralegal Certificate program at San Francisco State.

This book was assigned for my Legal Research & Writing class, but it explained the basic principles of the state and federal court systems much better than the textbook that was assigned for my Intro to Law/Civil Procedure class.

The professor who assigned the book also teaches at a well-known law school and told our class that she wishes that she could assign it there as well, but is not the key decision maker.

I am a writer, so I assumed that the chapters on legal writing were going to be boring and I planned to skip them. To my surprise, I learned a lot.

I spent the whole day today in a law library working on a homework assignment. I keep thinking to myself how grateful I was to the author for writing this book because it helped me tremendously with the assignment. I am going to research how I can contact her to thank her!!!

If you are planning to attend Paralegal or Law school I recommend that you read this book to help prepare yourself. It covers all of the basics.

I'm just getting into it, but questioned my professor for requiring it, until I read a few chapters and browsed through it and found it to be adequate, and more. The writing is clear and substantial and makes for easy and significant study.

Awful book, badly written, obviously unedited.......2003-05-20

This book is poorly written and unedited. It is riddled with grammatical errors; the captions for the illustrations and samples are misleading; often the text that can't be distinguished from illustrations because of inconsistent use of fonts and dividing rules.

When one of the authors tried to discuss the difference between the executive, judiciary and legislative branches of the federal government, she forgot to describe the executive or perhaps didn't know what the president's function is.

One of the authors thinks that Black's is a common law dictionary. Perhaps she meant commonly used? No attorney would tolerate a paralegal or legal assistant with such poor communication skills as these authors possess; yet the book is supposed to teach the prospective paralegal to communicate in a legal environment.

The workbook is sloppily laid out without any thought to the amount of space needed to answer the question adequately. It's misleading when the question only requires a short answer and too much space is provided; the reverse is also true.
