4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......2007-04-10

This classic book on superconductivity is excellent for an experienced reader who has already some background in superconductivity. However, for a student trying to learn superconductivity, it says too many things in too brief which may be difficult to follow. While teaching a course I would prefer to follow a book like Superconductivity by Ketterson and Song and refer to this book for selected (special) topics.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Introduction to an Amazing Field.......2004-08-03

The theory of superconductors is an amazingly complicated and rich field, and it can be very daunting to begin studying without a large background in physics. This book does an excellent job telling you the details enough to understand what is going on without giving you so much that it becomes a daunting task to read the book.

Having only read through the first three chapters so far, I give that caveat before continuing.

The first chapter, the author says upfront, is difficult to follow, as it gives a quick outline of every future chapter in the book. I would recommend skimming the first chapter, and then after reading each chapter go back and see if you got the key points illustrated in the first chapter.

The second chapter, a treatment of the London equations, does an excellent job deriving the London equations in the first section, then providing a great deal of application of the equations, as well as outlining the limits of that model of superconductors.

Chapter 3 is where the book gets down to business, as Tinkham gives an introduction to BCS theory. This treatment uses plausibility arguements to justify many of the conclusions or assumptions, but also provides some guidance to the mathematical rigor you might use to really prove the assertions you make. The chapter does not leave you feeling very confused at all, and the section can be read almost straight through.

Although I have not read any further into the book, I can only imagine that it is more of the same. I would strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in learning something about superconductors before trying something more rigorous, such as Schrieffer's classic text on the work.

5 out of 5 stars A basic reference in the field.......2000-03-30

This book provides an excellent comprehensive review of most of the aspects relevant to superconductivity. A strong basis in physics is required to follow it all the way. Otherwise, it is possible to read most of the chapters separately without loosing continuity, so the more complex ones can be put aside if the reader is not interested in deep physics. Many references to relevant authors are given all along the text. It should be a reference available to all the people seriously involved in superconductivity. The only bad point is that it uses CGS unit rather than SI units.

            Book Description

Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.

              Book Description

With the discovery of type-II superconductivity by Abrikosov, the prediction of vortex lattices, and their experimental observation, quantized vortices have become a central object of study in superconductivity, superfluidity, and Bose--Einstein condensation. This book presents the mathematics of superconducting vortices in the framework of the acclaimed two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model, with or without magnetic field, and in the limit of a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter, kappa.

This text presents complete and mathematically rigorous versions of both results either already known by physicists or applied mathematicians, or entirely new. It begins by introducing mathematical tools such as the vortex balls construction and Jacobian estimates. Among the applications presented are: the determination of the vortex densities and vortex locations for energy minimizers in a wide range of regimes of applied fields, the precise expansion of the so-called first critical field in a bounded domain, the existence of branches of solutions with given numbers of vortices, and the derivation of a criticality condition for vortex densities of non-minimizing solutions. Thus, this book retraces in an almost entirely self-contained way many results that are scattered in series of articles, while containing a number of previously unpublished results as well.

The book also provides a list of open problems and a guide to the increasingly diverse mathematical literature on Ginzburg--Landau related topics. It will benefit both pure and applied mathematicians, physicists, and graduate students having either an introductory or an advanced knowledge of the subject.

                Book Description

Electrical Engineering Magnetic Hysteresis Understanding magnetic hysteresis is vitally important to the development of the science of magnetism as a whole and to the advancement of practical magnetic device applications. Magnetic Hysteresis, by acclaimed expert Edward Della Torre, presents a clear explanation of the connection between physical principles and phenomenological hysteresis. This comprehensive book offers a lucid analysis that enables the reader to save valuable time by reducing trial-and-error design. Dr. Della Torre uses physical principles to modify Preisach modeling and to describe the complex behavior of magnetic media. While Pretsach modeling is a useful mathematical tool, its congruency and deletion properties present limitations to accurate descriptions of magnetic materials. Step-by-step, this book describes the modifications that can overcome these limitations. Special attention is given to the use of feedback around a Preisach transducer to remove the congruency restriction, and to the use of accommodation and aftereffect models to remove the deletion restriction. Magnetic state selection rules are introduced to couple scalar Preisach models to form a vector model. Magnetic Hysteresis is indispensable reading for engineers, physicists, and materials scientists who want to gain a better understanding of hysteresis losses and create more energy-efficient motor designs.

                Book Description

Based on oral tales that originated from historical events in tenth-century Iceland, these two sagas follow the fate of a powerful Viking family across two generations, from its early Norwegian ancestry to fierce battles to defend its honor. Gisli Sursson's Saga is a story of forbidden love and divided loyalties, in which the heroic Gisli vows to avenge the murder of his “sworn brother” and sets in motion a chain of events that culminate in tragedy. The Saga of the People of Eyri continues the story with Snorri, a cunning leader of the next generation, who uses his intellect to restore social order. Blending gripping narrative, humor, the supernatural, and shrewd observation, these tales reveal the richness of the saga tradition and present a vivid record of a society moving from ruthless individualism to a Christian ethic of reconciliation and order.

5 out of 5 stars A pair of great stories!.......2006-08-15

This volume from Penguin Classics contains two Icelandic sagas, Gisli Sursson's Saga and The Saga of the People of Eyri. The stories form a nice set, since the events of the first lead to the events of the second (though not in the style of a modern sequel).

The Icelandic sagas are some of my favorite stories for the simple reason that they waste no time in setting up the action and bringing it to an end, and are almost invariably exciting. They are spare, fast-moving stories that, at the same time, manage to be incredibly complex. In the case of both of these stories, rivals, intrigue, and betrayal play major roles throughout.

Gisli Sursson's Saga: Gisli Sursson belongs to the first generations of Iceland's inhabitants. Iceland was undiscovered and uncolonized until the 9th century, when the ever-wandering Vikings found it and began to populate it. Gisli Sursson, in avenging the death of his brother, is declared to have been outside the protection of the law in his manner of vengeance and outlawed. Bork, a distant relative, takes up the chase, hiring bounty hunters to help track Gisli down. Gisli survives--through many, many outbreaks of violence--thirteen years in the wilderness. Along the way he is sheltered in a valley guarded by a giant, encounters ghosts (which have corporeal substance in Icelandic lore and have to be "killed" again), and, with the help of his wife, seems only one step ahead of Bork's men. The final showdown between him and his pursuers on a jagged mountaintop is a thrilling climax more exciting than many modern novels I've read.

The Saga of the People of Eyri: Not as compelling as Gisli's story, but still endlessly fascinating, this saga deals with a locality rather than a specific person, though the saga gives a lot of attention to Snorri the Godi, who was young boy at the time of Gisli's death and witnessed his own mother attempting to kill Bork. Snorri, as a godi, is heavily involved in the politics and legal confusions of the era, and does his share of killing and cheating death. Like I and another reviewer have said, The Saga of the People of Eyri isn't as fulfilling as Gisli Sursson's Saga (though it does have plenty of excitement) and a bit anticlimactic, but it's still good reading because it ties in to another saga available from Penguin, The Saga of Grettir the Strong, which is every bit as good as Gisli Sursson's.

The notes are minimal, which is not a problem, and the introductions and a few appendices may help acquaint beginners with Icelandic and Norse culture and the world of the sagas.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in medieval Europe, Iceland, Norse culture, mythology, or to anyone just looking for an quick but exciting story to read at night.

2 out of 5 stars One out of two.......2006-03-16

There are two sagas in this volume, but only the first (Gisli Sursson's Saga) is worth reading. It's a very interesting story, nothing high-brow, just a simple action thriller about a man who lives as a fugitive for thirteen years, making many harrowing escapes before finally falling valiantly in the end (and not without taking a few others with him!). The second one (The Saga of the People of Eyri), however, is a bit of a disappointment. Not only are there way too many characters to keep track of, but each subplot builds up in excellent drama, only to be resolved in a paragraph by someone paying a fine or something. Disappointing. And boring. The first (Gisli) is stll pretty good, though.
