Book Description

Many statistical modelling and data analysis techniques can be difficult to grasp and apply, and it is often necessary to use computer software to aid the implementation of large data sets and to obtain useful results. S-Plus is recognised as one of the most powerful and flexible statistical software packages, and it enables the user to apply a number of statistical methods, ranging from simple regression to time series or multivariate analysis. This text offers extensive coverage of many basic and more advanced statistical methods, concentrating on graphical inspection, and features step-by-step instructions to help the non-statistician to understand fully the methodology. A valuable reference resource for researchers, professionals, lecturers and students from statistics, the life sciences, medicine, engineering, economics and the social sciences.

3 out of 5 stars Ambitious, but doesn't fully meet its ambitions.......2005-06-02

Mathematical level: Moderate

For the right audience, this is a very good book. The problem is finding the right audience. The book attempts to cover a lot of ground; in a typical graduate program in the social sciences, it would be at least 3 semesters worth, maybe more. But, if you've had the statistics, and need to learn S-Plus, this book offers a lot of good hints. The problem is that it doesn't teach S-Plus as give a lot of interesting examples, so you would also need an S-Plus book. Therefore, the right audience is someone who knows some statistics and some S-Plus, but wants to get some hints for both.

5 out of 5 stars Teachers, students, and researchers - stop here!.......2004-06-13

This is far and away the best statistics book I have found for the non-statistician. As a researcher and introductory behavioral statistics teacher this book has proven invaluable to me.

Crawley explains the connecting ideas that foster understanding that so many others seem to omit. Teaching statistics graphically rather than formulaically using the free student version of s-plus, my students come away understanding the foundations of statistics including measures of central tendency, probability distributions, regression, and ANOVA.

The interesting thing is that when I need an introduction to survival analysis or non-linear regression, I'm able to pick up the same book. Crawley explains many more advanced analyses with the same care and thoroughness that he does the basics including log-linear analysis, mixed-effects models, Generalised linear models, and time series analysis to name but a few.

I originally picked up this book to learn how to conduct analyses using s-plus but what I found was so much more.

To those of you that are really only interested in learning s-plus this book does that elegantly as well and I prefer it to Venables and Ripley (Modern Applied Statistics with S). I suspect that statisticians will prefer the later title but if you are like me and want some help understanding the analysis and not just how to do it in s-plus then stick with this title.

    Book Description

This book introduces mathematical computing using J - a powerful new programming language with practical applications in mathematics, actuarial analysis, scientific research, business data processing, and education. Derived from APL, J was designed as an executable mathematical notation by Dr. Kenneth E. Iverson and was implemented by Roger K.W. Hui. J unifies many areas of mathematics, has a simple consistent syntax with very few rules, yet includes a large number of functions and operators as tools for thinking and problem solving.

    Book Description

Newcomers to the world of probability face several potential stumbling blocks. They often struggle with key concepts-sample space, random variable, distribution, and expectation; they must regularly confront integration, infrequently mastered in calculus classes; and they must labor over lengthy, cumbersome calculations. Introduction to Probability with Mathematica is a groundbreaking text that uses a powerful computer algebra system as a pedagogical tool for learning and using probability. Its clever use of simulation to illustrate concepts and motivate important theorems gives it an important and unique place in the library of probability theory. The author smoothly integrates the technology with the traditional approach and subject matter, thereby augmenting rather than overpowering it. This book lives and breathes in the sense that not only can it be read and studied in an armchair, but each section also exists as a fully executable Mathematica® notebook on the CRC Web site. Students will find Introduction to Probability with Mathematica an engaging, accessible, yet challenging way to venture into the fascinating subject of probability.

5 out of 5 stars Sample Programs are Available.......2004-12-30

One reviewer said that the sample programs were not available as promised on the publishers website. That may have been true when that review was written, however, I just checked and the sample programs are now there for download on the publisher's website. In fact, I just downloaded them and they are fully functioning Mathematica notebooks.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2003-12-12

I purchased this book in desperation while taking a probability class with another textbook, and it has been a lucky find, indeed. The mathematics are limited mostly to basic calculus but provide sufficient rigor to satisfy the interests of mathematically-minded readers. The concepts appeal intuitively to the non-statistician scientist or graduate student as well as the mathematician. This book is easy to read and understand. Mathematica enhances the text and aids the homework, but unlike the reviewer below, I believe this book is valuable even without Mathematica. After reading this book I was able to make sense of the assigned probability text and began to enjoy the course. Introduction to Probability with Mathematica was well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars A creative and refreshing approach..........2003-11-05

I considered this book for a course that I thought I was going to teach. The course never got offered but I did discover this neat book in the process. Being a Mathematica fan, I was very happy to see a probability book completely based on Mathematica. In fact, the book itself is a set of Mathematica notebooks, making it very easy for the readers to experiment with the introduced topics. The explanations are clear and are accompanied with neat examples showing real-world uses of probability.

There should be more books like this... Really.

    ........

    5 out of 5 stars I was a guinea pig.......2001-01-09

I was one of the test users of this book at the college where Prof. Hastings teaches. With the use of Mathematica (which is assumed in this book), the book allows one to explore the ideas much more easily. By modifying built in commands, the user can get a better grasp on how specific distributions behave. The commands written for the book are also very helpful. I found the book easy to use and the problems ranged from basic to difficult, but most were intersting (particularly the chapter on simulation). For those with access to Mathematica, this book works seemlessly with the program, making Mathematica a simple to use tool to aid in the understanding of probability rather than get in the way.

1 out of 5 stars No software available.......2000-12-27

The book seems to have good intentions.. but... most of the text uses Mathematica Code that is not available... the promised software on the publishers Website is apparently vaporware.. totally unavailable.. and of course the publishers are "not available"... Without software the book is an expensive waste of time...

    5 out of 5 stars Concise.......2006-08-06

Buckley and Eslami's notation and some of their ideas on fuzzy sets might go deeper than many others. I've found this book intriguing to say the least. You'll find this a very concise "no-nonsense" sort of math book. Ideas get explained in a few sentences or in a few paragraphs, and then come the exercises! And you'll find even more new ideas, not mentioned in the reading, in the exercises. I do like this sort of style of learning mathematics, because it actively gets you involved.
This book and others on fuzzy set theories do require a decent understaning of crisp set theory. So, if one hasn't taken a course or read a book on crisp set theory you might want to check out a copy of Seymour Lipschutz's Schaum's Outline "Theory and Problems of Set Theory." Knowing some basic calculus will also help. Some advantages of this book lie in that it helps one to separate the idea of fuzzy intersections and fuzzy unions from the standard and useful idea of t-norms and t-conorms. Sections on fuzzy geometry, fuzzy trignometry also seem interesting as these ideas have not yet gotten much development.
I think I've detected a potential error in the text in that it gives an integral for an equation that had to have had part of the integral as negative. But, this seems relatively minor. The book could easily get improved if the author(s) provided solved examples of their exercises, or at least answers. Something like a Schaum's Outline of Fuzzy Set Theory would be an excellent idea!
I appreciate simple things in this text like the authors not saying "prove this truth table..." and instead saying "prove or disprove...", and not saying "prove" in general, but rather saying "show".

      Book Description

Integrating computer graphics and computer-based exercises with the text, An Introduction to Unconstrained Optimisation illustrates key methods with many examples and exercises using the computer. The book takes an elementary approach to this advanced topic, allowing readers to concentrate on learning and understanding the concepts of numerical optimization without unnecessary involvement in the intricacies of the subject. In addition, the modular approach of the software provides the opportunity to explore the algorithms used and to develop them further or try alternative approaches. Most of the algorithms are based upon a "hill-climbing" concept which, in two dimensions, is illustrated dynamically on the computer screen in the form of contour plots and search directions. The text is not specific to any particular microcomputer. Software is available for the BBC series of machines (40/80 track disc formats) and PC-compatible machines. The software is not available from your local bookstore, but is easily obtainable using the order form in the book. Keeping proofs and lists of methods to a minimum, the book is at a level suitable for a first course in numerical analysis, with a basic knowledge of calculus and vector algebra assumed. This book/software package will be of interest to professionals, teachers, and undergraduate students in mathematics, operational research, science, and engineering as well as economics and management courses that deal with quantitative methods.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Introductory Reference for any Bookshelf!.......1998-09-30

I have used this textbook at the Graduate level in pursuit of my M.Eng in Aerospace Engineering. It was a reference textbook for our "Finite Difference Methods in Computational Fluid Dynamics" course. It was invaluable! It provides a clear, comprehensive review of the Fluid Dynamic Equations including an excellent discussion of their mathematical properties. This is followed by a detailed development of the Finite Difference Method as applied to the computational solution of fluid dynamic problems. Included are discretization techniques, transformations and grids, stability analysis, and boundary layer solutions. Finally, the Finite Element Method is introduced and developed in detail. Although not directly applicable to my course, the FEM discussion layed in the ground work for further study. This book really is the perfect reference for both the undergraduate and graduate level CFD course.
