      5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2007-01-22

This was a GREAT book. Okay, so actually, you get to choose your story so i guess anyone can say it's a great book. I mean who deosn't love to choose what happens?

I guess its not that fantastic, but it's original, which I love. So many people these days have similar books. Ugh! It's a great book and it's definitely worth the money because you can read it over and over and over. It's like 4 books in one! Haven't read the next book, but I can't wait!

      ;)

4 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-12-31

WHAT IF...EVERYONE KNEW YOUR NAME is an interesting idea. It's a lot like those Choose Your Own Adventure books you read as a kid. The story is about Haley, a fairly average fifteen-year-old girl who has just moved to suburban New Jersey and is starting at her first public high school. She starts out average, so that the reader can pretty much choose everything that happens to her as the story goes on.

You make every little decision for her, even the ones that seem really minor, like riding the bus to school or getting a ride from her father. You decide who she wants to be friends with and what crowd she wants to be a part of. You decide everything about her.

While an interesting idea, and fairly well-written, this book isn't for everyone. If you're all about finding out what will happen, this book might not be for you, because you decide what happens. It's a cool concept, though, and a fun read, especially since you can read it more than once, with a different story and outcome. The characters aren't particularly three-dimensional, but I guess they have to be simple enough so that it is believable that they would make any one of the very different choices you choose from. This book is fun, but not a must-read.

5 out of 5 stars What If... Everyone Knew Your Name.......2006-09-20

The book What If... Everyone Knew Your Name by Liz Ruckdescel and Sara James was a realistic fiction novel about a girl who's family takes a road trip, moving from the Golden State of California to the Garden State of New Jersey. She moves to a new school called Hillsdale High and needs to know how she can fit in.
Haley Miller, the 15 year old going into a public school for the first time is scared and ready to be friends with anyone she can. While she wishes she didn't ever move, she meets a neighbor whom she thinks is very god looking. She befriends him and others while the story takes its twists and turns.
I really liked this book because of the way it was, how you got to choose what she did. It really makes you feel as if its you living in the book, not Haley. The book takes you through the up and downs of high school and you get to control everything; her friends, her grades, her love life, her future. You don't know how it will turn out either, so that makes it suspenseful, just like real life because you never know what life will throw at you next. For all you know in the book, Haley could be invited to the next big party, and make a bad decision and drink, or you could have her not take the drink and it turns out the stud she's looking at, doesn't like alcohol either.
I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read the other one like it called "What If... All the Boys Wanted You." It sounds just as interesting as the first one they wrote and I can't wait to see what that book throws at Haley this time.
I strongly recommend this book for any teen who likes books that will take them through the happy, and not so happy parts of high school. Some of these things in the book can really teach you some stuff you can use in real life, like many novels about teens. So if you are into real life situations, I defiantly recommend this book to you. It was a great read, and I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

I loved this book! It was interesting and fun to read. I really liked the way you got to choose what the main character does. I would recommened this book to someone who is 11 years old or older and someone who is ready for an adventure. This book is worth your time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Makes reading a fun experience.......2006-07-21

In this day in age it is hard to make books as exciting and entertaining as the WB channel in the minds of a lot of teenagers, but the What If books are bringing that kind of excitement back to reading. There is so much to talk about with these books -- which choices you made, what happens, etc that it is fun to go back and re-read many times. The dialogue and character descriptions really make the whole book come alive so that I truly feel like I know what it must be like to be a teenager in Jersey -- scary thought! Truly a great new series!!!

      Book Description

(Not for distribution) We all know what randomness is. We sometimes choose between options "at random", and if we toss a coin we know it will land heads or tails at random. But are events like these truly random? Randomness turns out to be one of those concepts, like "solid matter" in physics, that works just fine on an everyday level but mysteriously disappears once we move in to examine its fine structure. In this fascinating book, mathematician Ed Beltrami takes a close enough look at randomness to make it mysteriously disappear. The results of coin tosses, it turns out, are determined from the start, and only our incomplete knowledge makes them look random. "Random" sequences of numbers are more elusive--they may be truly random, but Godel's undecidability theorem informs us that we'll never know. Their apparent randomness may be only a shortcoming of our minds. Mathematicians have even discovered a string of numbers that appears random--but when you reverse the string, it's completely deterministic! People familiar with quantum indeterminacy tell us that order is an illusion, and that the world is fundamentally random. Yet randomness is also an illusion. Then which is real? Perhaps order and randomness, like waves and particles, are only two sides of the same coin.

2 out of 5 stars interesting, but pedagogically feeble.......2005-10-17

This book is contains a fairly substantial (from the layman's point of view) discussion of randomness. It discusses the fundamentals of probability, information/entropy, etc. It ends with an appendix of "technical notes", an appendix on binary notation and 6 pages of references. But it has no exercises, and presents its material as if the layman could assimilate it by simple passive reading. Not so. You need a paper and pencil. You need to manufacture exercises to master or even understand the material. I am comfortable with algebra and basic calculus, but got lost and gave up after a couple of chapters (I did not break out pencil and paper).

If you are not mathematically sophisticated enough to just "get it" by reading, I suggest you buy a real textbook, where the author is actually makes a commitment to teaching, rather than mere exposition.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent explanations of probabilities.......2002-07-17

This is an excellent study of what randomness means, particularly in Beltrami's treatment of averages.

1 out of 5 stars Statistically indistinguishable from blather........2001-01-25

There's this thing in the jacket blurb for this book about how maybe a guy gets a phone call & takes off down the sidewalk and then a hammer falls out of a nearby window and lands on his head and this is just the fickle, unpredictable hand of chance... OR IS IT? Now, to whatever associate editor came up with that, kudos, b/c it's the type of maybe-there's-something-going-on-behind-the-scenes hook that makes you want to snap the thing off the shelf. Unfortunately, if you read it, you'll find that there's no insight at all re: the phone call-hammer issue. Instead you get a brief intro to probability theory, a not-too-adept description of testing for randomness in binary strings, and some disjointed thoughts on entropy, number theory, and the ilk. There are a few tidbits here that may be of interest to math buffs, but the inquisitive layman looking to expose the hidden patterns of the universe will be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars RANDOM AND CONFUSING THOUGHTS.......2000-07-19

A well meaning, but totally sloppy book -- botn in writing style and clarity of thought. Interesting for the range of topics it suggests relate to its subject, although its coverage of them is aweful. It is somewhat useful for the references it offers, in case the frustrated reader is still interested enough in the topics to try and make up for the book's own failures by reading up on them elsewhere. As for the rest, it is hard to follow and confusing on all but the most elementary points.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new here.......2000-03-04

Beltrami's newest is a comprehensive view of randomness without ever coming to grips with any meaning of the concept. Sure, definitions are given, but simply the usual algorithmic so prevalent in recent popular works on computers. The interesting binary-string examples are in no way random in any intuitive sense of the word; they merely serve to illustrate his somewhat prolix text. If you are new to this field, these ideas, and the development of algorithmic "randomness", then this is an outstanding book and to be recommended highly. If you are looking for something beyond the semantically sterile notions of reductionist randomness, then this book will leave you wondering why you bothered reading it.

      Book Description

Tavis Smiley grew up in a family of thirteen in a small trailer in Indiana, where money was scarce and the sight of other black faces even scarcer. One of only a few African American kids in his high school, he grew up feeling like an outsider because of the color of his skin, his Pentecostal religious beliefs, and his family’s economic circumstances. It was the love and support of his family that sustained him. But that trust and support was shattered when his father, in a moment of rage, beat him with an electrical cord, sending him to the hospital. Tavis was placed in foster care for a time, and it took him years to bridge the emotional chasm between him and his parents.

Nothing, however, could quench Tavis’s fierce inner drive to succeed. His remarkable speaking ability made him an oratorical champion in Indiana and offered him a pathway to a different world. Determined to fight for the underdog and for African American rights, he entered the political arena, moving to Los Angeles to work in Mayor Tom Bradley’s administration. Later, he embarked on his career as a radio commentator, discovering that it was an ideal way to influence public discourse on the issues of the day. Now with his own show on PBS, he remains committed to bettering the lives of all Americans; he’s especially acclaimed for his work on behalf of people of color and the underprivileged.

An honest, deeply moving self-portrait of one of America’s most popular media figures, What I Know for Sure should appeal to readers everywhere.

I applaud Mr. Smiley for his detailed account of African-American stories and the way that he connected them to Historical events. He, in this book, successfully gave a description of how so many have grown up in Urban America.

5 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable, Enlightening Read.......2007-06-29

Tavis Smiley writes an enjoyable, enlightening, easy-to-read story of his upbringing in middle America. Though at times fighting against a sometimes harsh upbringing in a committed Christian home, Smiley's work repeatedly hearkens back to the lessons he learned in that very home. He teaches how anyone can move beyond negative life experiences, be they in the home or in society, to a place of meaning and success in life.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2007-06-28

I truly enjoyed this book. I totally agree with another reader...the chapters are not unnecessarily bogged down with additional information which made the book very easy to read. His story is very encouraging and is a testament that there is no obstacle you cannot overcome if you have the faith and determination Tavis displayed in this book.
Although I may not have had the heart to make some of the moves he did i.e. (taking an unpaid position away from home with no means of income) look where he is today...God Bless him!

      1 out of 5 stars Much Ado.......2007-06-22

I admire Tavis, think he is an insightful interviewer and enjoy his show very much. However, his book was a disappointment. There's no THERE there. Poorly written, thin on substance--he doesn't really DO anything. Although I have sympathy from the scars he obviously still bears from his abusive and sheltered overly-religious childhood, he comes off as whiney and superficial. I and some of my book club members liked Tavis a lot better before reading his shallow memoir.

      3 out of 5 stars Mixed Emotions.......2007-05-30

The brutal beating with the extension cord was probably the saddest thing I've read in a while. Aside from that, the book was just ok for me. I found myself shaking my head that Tavis would show up on a college's doorstep without tuition, a dorm assignment, etc. I just really didn't believe he was that naive or that his parents were just that stubborn. The book was easy to read, with really short chapters that weren't bogged down with useless info. Each chapter was straight to the point. Worth a read.

I first got this book at the library, but my 18th month old loved it so much, i had to buy it. It is only 12 pages, so it kept his attention span. We would read the page (only 1 to 4 words on each page) and then imitate what we saw. Example: picture of a baby sleeping - we would put our head down as if going to sleep. He, therfore, was seeing, saying, and imitating the things he learned. The thick sturdy pages also made this book last alot longer then some of his others.

              Book Description

Frances Hodgson Burnett was the highest paid and most widely read woman writer of her time, publishing more than fifty novels and thirteen plays. Born in England and transplanted to New York toward the end of the Civil War, Burnett made her home in both countries, and today both countries claim her as their own. The Secret Garden, her best-known work, became an instant modern classic and world-wide bestseller upon its publication in 1911. The text of this Norton Critical Edition is based on the first edition and is accompanied by explanatory annotations.

" Backgrounds and Contexts" and " Letters" illuminate important aspects of Burnett's life and work and include her own writings on gardens and their spiritual healing. Four illustrations point to Burnett's prominence in popular culture.

" Criticism" includes fourteen contemporary reviews and nine recent critical views of The Secret Garden, including Jerry Phillips's sociopolitical interpretation and Phyllis Bixler's comparative analysis of the Broadway musical adaptation of the novel.

A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.
