Book Description
Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics introduces students, scientists, and engineers to the full range of activity in the rapidly growing field on nonlinear dynamics. Using a step-by-step introduction to dynamics and geometry in state space as the central focus of understanding nonlinear dynamics, this book includes a thorough treatment of both differential equation models and iterated map models (including a derivation of the famous Feigenbaum numbers). It is the only book at this level to include the increasingly important field of pattern formation and a survey of the controversial questions of quantum chaos. Important tools such as Lyapunov exponents and fractal dimensions are treated in detail. With over 200 figures and diagrams, and analytic and computer exercises for every chapter, the book can be used as a course-text or for self-instruction. This second edition has been restructured to make the book even more useful as a course text:many of the more complex examples and derivations have been moved to appendices. The extensive collection of annotated references has been updated through January 2000 and now includes listings of World Wide Web sites at many of the major nonlinear dynamics research centers. From reviews on the 1/e: 'What has been lacking is a single book that takes the reader with nothing but a knowledge of elementary calculus and physics all the way to the frontiers of research in chaos and nonlinear dynamics in all its facets. [...] a serious student, teacher, or researcher would be delighted to have this book on the shelf as a reference and as a window to the literature in this exciting and rapidly growing new field of chaos.' J.C. Sprott, American Journal of Physics, September 19944 'I congratulate the author on having managed to write an extremely thorough, comprehensive, and entertaining introduction to the fascinating field of nonlinear dynamics. His book is highly self- explanatory and ideally suited for self-instruction. There is hardly any question that the author does not address in an exceptionally readable manner. [...] I strongly recommend it to those looking for a comprehensive, practical, and not highly mathematical approach to the subject.' E.A. Hunt, IEEE Spectrum, December 1994
Customer Reviews:
A good book for introduction.......2007-05-22
I have recently bought this book. I have been studying on evolution of the test particles in a particular planewave spacetimes, and I have realized that the system admits a non-integrable structure. I should investigate whether the particle motion emerges chaos or not. But, my knowledge on chaos was almost zero, before buying this book. Now, I am going to complete the full analysis of the book, and I am much more familiar to the concept of chaos. However, this book can be used for just begining. To proceed to the advanced problems you should look for other materials, especially to the articles about chaos. I advise this book as a first book to start chaos.
Dr. Izzet Sakalli
An excellent introduction.......2007-03-09
Covers the basics in an in-depth manner, and exposes the reader to a wide range of exciting problems in dynamical systems theory. THE book to start with if one is interested in chaos.
A excellent introduction to chaos.......2003-11-25
This is an accessible and readable introductory textbook on chaos and nonlinear dynamics. It focuses on the ideas behind the theory of chaos, rather than on the details of the mathematics which can sometimes hinder rather than help the reader gain real insight into the mechanisms of nonlinear systems.
By this I do not mean that the author skips over the required mathematics. The text is intended for people with a solid background in differential equations, and some familiarity with classical dynamical systems is also helpful if not completely necessary. I would say it is targeted for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students in the mathematical sciences, as well as scientists/engineers with no background in chaos theory. However he does not get bogged down in mathematics at the expense of physical insight. I have been studying the book on my own and have run into few problems in understanding the explanations.
The first chapter goes over 3 chaotic systems as a practical way of introducing the reader to various features of such systems. This provides a basis of practical experience to draw upon for the rest of the book, where the principles of chaos are examined in greater detail. The extensive references given in the book are a valuable addition that can be used to further explore the scientific literature. The references include journal papers as well as books, articles, and software for dynamical systems.
If you have the requisite mathematical background and want to learn the basics of chaos and nonlinear dynamics, I highly recommend this book.
fundamental, systematic.......2001-11-07
If you are looking for a textbook or reference on chaos theory, I recommend you to buy this book.
If you read other books, you will eventually comment,'chaos is something related to mathematics, very abstract, has nothing to do with my messy bedroom...'
But if you read this book, you will scream,'Great! I have figured out the richness of the nonlinear world. I understand the different dynamical routes to chaos. I know different quantifying methods with their pros and cons. Most fascinating is that chaos is related to pattern formation and self organization, which I consider them as another field of knowledge before. Also chaos may provide a new approach to quantum mechanics, a good news for those including me who do not believe in the parallel universe interpretation. By the way, I learnt a lot from this book!'
Good book!.......2000-08-05
If you want to get on into chaos, just read this book. I especially like the very wide scope of the subjects considered and the insight provided by the author in pattern formation or quantum chaos.

Book Description
The authors compare classical and quantum dynamics in the quasiclassical region of parameters and under the condition of unstable (chaotic) classical behavior. They estimate the characteristic time-scale at which classical and quantum solutions start to differ significantly. The method is based on exact equations for time-dependent expectation values in boson and spin coherent states, and applies to rather general Hamiltonians with many degrees of freedom. The authors develop a consistent dynamical theory for quantum nonintegrable Hamiltonians and provide explicit examples of classical-quantum "crossover-time", a very common and fundamental phenomenon in quantum nonintegrable systems. This book can be recommended to graduate students and to specialists.

Classical Electrodynamics Third Edition
ASIN: 0521632129 |
Book Description
This revised and updated second edition of a highly successful text embraces a universal approach to three major developments in classical physics: namely, nonlinear waves, solitons, and chaos. The authors include new material on biology and laser theory, and go on to discuss important recent developments such as soliton metamorphosis. They also offer a new section on a direct method to study transverse instabilities of pulse-like structures. A comprehensive treatment of basic plasma and fluid configurations and instabilities is followed by a study of the relevant nonlinear structures. Additional key features comprise color illustrations of soliton dynamics and end-of-chapter problems. In general, it will be of value to final year undergraduates and beginning graduate students studying fluid dynamics, plasma physics and applied mathematics.
Customer Reviews:
Obtuse and opaque tome.......2006-07-11
The main thrust of this textbook is soliton theory and examples in plasma physics. There is some additional material borrowed from fluid dynamics, but the flavor is still plasmas. This text is very analytic. The derivations are often hard or impossible to follow, and the authors seem to assume general familiarity with plasma physics. I don't have that familiarity, so I found the choice of topics covered and the ensuing theory ad hoc and unmotivated. This is the kind of text where you can spend an enormous amount of time grinding through it, and at the end of the day come away with very litte applicable knowledge.
Chaos is for everyone.......2001-06-22
This book delves far beyond the capabilities of a non-physicist such as myself and is not for everyone. However, I have had a regular tennis game for many years with co-author Professor George Rowlnds of Warwick University (UK). Over beer afterwards, he has often expounded on the importance of choas theory in the real world. I doubt but that a handful of people have the expertise to write a proper review of this book but, as none have done so, I offer this as a poor replacement. Your round, George!
Book Description
In recent years nonlinear and irreversible quantum mechanics is becoming increasingly important because of the availability of precision experiments. There are new and successful attempts to understand quantum irreversibility. The development of generalized symmetries has to led to new families of evolution equations for pure and mixed states. On the one hand, this timely symposium covers nonlinear and irreversible quantum mechanics, the theory of quantization methods, causality and various problems important in this context. On the other hand, it reports the development of quantum group symmetries, and of methods to construct deformed quantum mechanical evolution equations like the q-deformed Schrödinger equations.

Evolutionary Dynamics: Exploring the Equations of Life
ASIN: 0198504004 |
Book Description
The present book provides a unified and general framework for studying quantum and classical dynamical systems, both finite and infinite, conservative and dissipative. Special attention is paid to the use of statistical and geometrical techniques, such as multitime correlation functions, quantum dynamical entropy, and non-commutative Lyapunov exponents, for systems with a complex evolution. The material is presented in a concise but self-contained and mathematically friendly way. The main ideas are introduced and illustrated by numerous examples which are directly connected to the relevant physics. Suggestions for further reading are included at the end of each chapter. The book addresses graduate students both in physics and mathematics with interests in mathematical aspects of quantum physics and applications of ergodic theory, operator algebras and statistics to physics, but without any prior knowledge of these subjects.
Book Description
Issa Boureima is a young, hip African street vendor who sells knock-off designer bags and hats in an open-air market on 125th street in Harlem. His goal is to become a "Jaguar"—a West African term for a keen entrepreneur able to spot trends and turn a profit in any marketplace. This dynamic world, largely invisible to mainstream culture, is the backdrop of this timely novel.
Faced with economic hardship in Africa, Issa has left his home in Niger and his new wife, Khadija, to seek his fortune in America. Devout Muslims, the couple has entered into a "modern" marriage: Khadija is permitted to run her own business, and Issa has agreed not to take additional wives. Issa quickly adapts to his new surroundings, however, and soon attracts several girlfriends. Aided by a network of immigrants, he easily slips through gaps in the "system" and extends his stay in America indefinitely. Following a circuit of African-American cultural festivals across America, he marvels at African-Americans' attitudes toward Africa, and wonders if he'll ever return to Niger. Meanwhile, Khadija also struggles to make it—to become a "Jaguar"—as she combats loneliness, hostile in-laws, and a traditional, male-dominated society. The eventual success of her dry goods shop and her growing affection for a helpful Arab merchant make her wonder if she'll ever join Issa in America.
Drawing on his own decades of experience among Africans both in Niger and in New York, Paul Stoller offers enormous insight into the complexities of contemporary Africa. Alive with detail, Jaguar is a story of triumph and disappointment, of dislocation and longing, and of life lived in a world that no longer recognizes boundaries.
Customer Reviews:
Religion 266.......2007-07-17
In his book Jaguar, Paul Stroller writes a remarkable piece about a man named Issa and his wife Khadjia and their lives, working to make enough money to support themselves as well as their families. Issa decides to go to America to make a better living than the one he was making in Abidjan, and he wanted Khadija to stay with his family in Niger until he made enough money to fly her out to America with him.
Jaguar: A Story of Africans in America.......2007-07-17
Paul Stoller, author of Jaguar, is professor of anthropology at West Chester University. Stoller produced a novel about a newlywed African couple and their struggles, both economic and relationship wise, that takes advantage of his long anthropological study of African culture. The book is at times engaging, though it seems to follow a linear pattern that is sometimes self repeating. Jaguar also seemed sporadically infected with grammar mistakes, duplicate words and other writing mistakes.
Issa and Khadija are newlywed Africans, Issa a Songhay of noble birth, Khadija a commoner from a merchant family. Issa moves away to become a merchant and he finds Khadija in his travels and marries her, both to the great distaste of his snobbish family. Their marriage and life seem perfect while they are living in Abidjan. Issa makes an ample living and Khadija sells food at a stall outside their compound, but the fates conspire to change the economic conditions in Abidjan and this forces Issa to send Khadija away to his family while he travels to America for fortune and wealth. Economic hardships forced the couple to live great distances from each other, but the distance starts to take its toll on their marriage. Both start to wonder whether things will work out.
The book is split into sections, each containing a number of chapters. Each section details the actions and experiences of Issa or Khadija. The sections alternate in an attempt to seamlessly integrate the two separate lives, but sometimes the effect achieved was less seamless and clunkier than the author intended. The genre Jaguar falls under is called ethnographic fiction, which is defined as an ethnographic description written as a story, Jaguar certainly fits this description however the quality of ethnographic description comes as only shards of insightful looks into African culture.
Stoller uses unsophisticated prose and describes events simply, and in doing so keeps a sense of the urgency for the way both characters feels as they flesh out their lives and decide what decisions they will make. Some might feel Stoller's novel to be one dimensional, because at any time one feels like one could easily predict the direction of the book and the outcome.
The audience for this book is that of all the English speaking world, but more specifically for people wishing to learn more about African culture, or the struggles that transnational Africans face in America. Overall Jaguar was an enjoyable book that I had a hard time putting down. Though the story was very linear, it was enjoyable. The small pile of grammar mistakes did take a toll, often interrupting a compelling piece of writing, but in the end the book overcame its shortcomings. This book is recommend to anyone looking for a quick read that wants to learn more about African culture and how it interacts with American brashness.
IWS266.......2007-07-17
This book is a good book to pick up if one wants to get a look into how immigrant live after coming to America in search of business. The book is a fun read and really takes the reader into the life of this African man. The book gets more interesting in the end when the reader is asking does Issa stay in America? Will he go back to his wife in Niger? And the question that captures the reader the most is will Khadija survive her in-laws? The book is entertaining and really a good book on the life of immigrants and worth the read.
Imperfect, but Good.......2007-07-17
The writing style of Jaguar is very natural and reads easily. Stoller successfully incorporates the jargon of transnational vendors attempting to find a common language and common customs within their community, as well as that of Jaguars seeking to become a New York City "homeboy." Stoller uses frequent repetition from chapter to chapter; this in and of itself could serve to reinforce themes and keep the reader focused by reminding them of the bigger picture that the story represent. However, many times the repeated sentiments became redundant. It was important to the story to have Khadija continue to assert her love for Issa, because that is something that may have changed. It seems, however, as though every time that Khadija ponders Yusef she must point out that he is an Arab, exclaim upon how nicely he treats women, and state that she thinks he might like her. All of this is quite unnecessary, since the writing in between each of these thoughts clearly shows his customs are different, he respects Khadija, and that both of their actions indicate attraction.
This book also has an unimaginable number of editing errors. Excluding the "homeboy" jargon, which is of course intended to be in the colloquial, there are places throughout the book, mostly in the narration which is not intended to be colloquial, where articles or conjunctions are completely left out. It is easy to fill in the blank in these sentences, but the initial notice of these errors seriously detracts from the story. Less noticeable errors are also present, such as "an" instead of "and." Quite a few of these typos pop up, but are much less distracting.
Despite some cosmetic problems, this book is thoroughly successful in portraying the lives of West African vendors in New York City, as well as other metropolitan areas; the demonstration of the experiences of those back in West Africa is similarly successful. The main characters offer common experiences of the group, while supporting characters give the potential variations in experience. This work also reveals volumes-worth of information about the cultural, religious, and ethnic contexts of these lives. It manages to compound a type of experience into a medium-length novel that would take many more pages to pick apart and portray accurately in a non-fiction, purely scholarly piece. A good read even for highschoolers, this book is a must for any liberal arts student.
Jaguar Book Review by Amanda Smith.......2007-07-17
Dark, fierce and quick the jaguar cat manages to adapt to diverse environments rapidly, while thriving off its natural ingenuity. Appropriately enough, in his first stab at writing a fiction novel, Jaguar, Paul Stoller depicts a young man who fits these characteristics perfectly. Jaguar, a term used by natives of West Africa to describe a man who capitalizes on his adaptability and entrepreneurship capabilities, defines the novels main character Issa Boureima. Descended from a line of Niger royalty and a clever businessman, Issa is the epitome of a jaguar in both his home community and abroad.
Exploring the multiple dichotomies of American life and African life, individuality vs. collectivism and male and female, Stoller does an eloquent job in explaining multiple aspects of a jaguars' life. Through the telling of the social lives and inner thoughts of the characters, Stoller, creates a dynamic picture of interweaving lives that all divulge a different look into the formation of community at home and abroad for West African jaguars.
Originally, an anthropologist who has spent multiple decades studying and immersing himself in West African culture, Stoller writes a convincing ethnographic tale that remains true to his anthropologic roots while delving into the feelings, hopes and desires of the people he studied. Allowing the reader to identify with certain characteristics of the novel's actors, like the need for love and acceptance, gives the reader the feeling that Stoller is confident in his capability to bring to life characters that people can relate to.
