    Book Description

This book is primarily concerned with turbulence in superfluid helium. Quantized vorticity has traditionally generated great interest among physicists, but there are now also important engineering applications such as liquid helium cooling of superconducting magnets. Presently much research is done on the relationship between superfluid turbulence and classical turbulence, as intense turbulence can be generated in liquid helium due to its small kinematic viscosity. There is also a close relationship between superfluid behaviour and quantized vorticity in liquid helium and in atomic Bose--Einstein condensates. Putting special emphasis on the interplay between the different disciplines involved, this readable account of recent research will appeal not only to established researchers but also to newcomers and graduate students wishing to enter the field.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Optimal for beginners in the field.......2007-05-14

Judging from this volume, Annett seems to be a great teacher and a great writer.

The distance between the material covered here and actual research is quite large, but that's OK, since the book is advertised as a pedagogical introduction, and it is really good at that.

Every chapter includes a number of smartly-chosen problems, the solutions to which are given in an Appendix.

I have given the book 4 stars instead of 5, because it suffers from horrendous copy-editing. Grammatical mistakes, typos in equations, wrong references to previous equations (and the list goes on). One gets the feeling that the publisher received the author's manuscript and published it as is. This makes it very difficult to understand why it's so expensive. Hopefully these errors will be removed in a future edition.

5 out of 5 stars a nice introduction to this subject.......2005-02-08

As most of the books of this serie, this one is also a successful introduction to the desired subject.
The text is very pedagogical and the author never avoids a calculation which leads to an important result. Every formula is generally commented in order to extract the physics behind.
All the important subjects related to BEC are touched. The main core of the book seems ,for me, understandable by a good undergraduate student.
Of course that won't make you a specialist of this wide subject which required a lot of knowledges from different parts of physics , but at least the most important things will be kwnown and you will have the sufficent stuff to go more deeply in the subject of your choice with the required litterature ( which may be found in the bibliography of the book).
I think it deserves its five stars since the objectives of the books (being an clear introduction without being to light) are definitly reached. Definitly a nice book !

          Book Description

Written by eminent researchers in the field, this text describes the theory of superconductivity and superfluidity starting from liquid helium and a charged Bose-gas. It also discusses the modern bipolaron theory of strongly coupled superconductors, which explains the basic physical properties of high-temperature superconductors. This book will be of interest to fourth year graduate and postgraduate students, specialist libraries, information centres and chemists working in high-temperature superconductivity.

              Book Description

Nonlinear partial differential equations abound in modern physics. The problems arising in these fields lead to fascinating questions and, at the same time, progress in understanding the mathematical structures is of great importance to the models. Nevertheless, activity in one of the approaches is not always sufficiently in touch with developments in the other field. The book presents the joint efforts of mathematicians and physicists involved in modelling reactive flows, in particular superconductivity and superfluidity. Certain contributions are fundamental to an understanding of such cutting-edge research topics as rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, Kolmogorov-Zakharov solutions for weak turbulence equations, and the propagation of fronts in heterogeneous media.

                Book Description

Nuclear Superfluidity is the first modern text devoted exclusively to pair correlations in nuclei. It begins by exploring pair correlations in a variety of systems including superconductivity in metals at low temperatures and superfluidity in liquid 3He and in neutron stars. The book goes on to introduce basic theoretical methods, symmetry breaking and symmetry restoration in finite many-body systems. The last four chapters are devoted to introducing new results on the role of induced interactions in the structure of both normal and exotic nuclei. The most important of these is the renormalization of the pairing interaction due to the coupling of pairs of nucleons to low energy nuclear collective excitations. This book will be essential reading for researchers and students in both experimental and theoretical nuclear physics, and related research fields such as metal clusters, fullerenes and quantum dots.

                    Book Description

This graduate-level text describes the physics of superconductivity and superfluidity, macroscopic quantum phenomena found in many conductors at low temperatures and in liquid helium 4 and helium 3. In the first part of the book the author presents the mean field theory of generalized pair condensation. This is followed by a description of the properties of ordinary superconductors using BCS theory. The book then proceeds with expositions of strong coupling theory and the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The remarkable properties of superfluid helium 3 are then described, as an example of a superfluid with internal degrees of freedom. Recent topics in the field, such as the copper-oxide high temperature superconductors and exotic superconductivity of heavy fermion systems are discussed in the final chapter. This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in condensed matter physics, especially those working in superconductivity and superfluidity.

                    Book Description

This leading, two-volume anthology represents America's literary heritage from the colonial times of William Bradford and Anne Bradstreet to the contemporary era of Saul Bellow and Alice Walker. Volume II begins with Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson and moves through Toni Morrison. It reflects a continued emphasis on cultural plurality, and multiple selections by authors that enables readers to compare and contrast different works. Numerous editions in their entirety include Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; Crane's The Red Badge of Courage; William's The Glass Menagerie; Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun; and Miller's Death of a Salesman. Also featured are shorter works—such as “How to Tell a Story,” by Mark Twain; Poems by Rita Dove; short stories by Sandra Cisneros, Louise Erdrich, and Toni Morrison. For modern scholars of America's literary history, and readers who simply love to read—especially the classics.

5 out of 5 stars Anthology of American Literature: Volume II.......2001-02-25

This huge textbook is a steal: hundreds of major works from the last century and a half, printed on quality paper, bound with a strong but flexible gum binding. If this were a hardcover, you'd pay twice the price for what it includes. It's thorough and scholarly, a tome that defines the Big League of anthologies. It's not for the shallow reader, though, who's accustomed to the sensuous audio-visuals of TV and the Internet. This is TEXT. Time to resuscitate the thinking mind, the patient intellect, the autonomous imagination.

                    4 out of 5 stars I think its great.......1998-08-09

I, on the other hand, think its a great collection of American literature, but maybe just a bit too pricey for what it offers. I would suggest it more as something to use as a reference than as something that should be read cover to cover, I mean, geeze, its 2060 pages long.

1 out of 5 stars A no frills book with literaly no thrills........1998-02-02

Few literary textbooks equal "An Anthology of American Literature" in length and dryness. While the book is a collection of mediocre stories who are now only seeing the light of day due to the baneful effects of political correctness, the editor of this work delves deeper to not include a single illustration that may have shed some light of this terrible experience of reading this collection of pointless stories,
