A pleasure seeking prince, a selfish giant, and more: Wilde's fairy tales, first published in 1888, for childlike people from eighteen to eighty."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars There is always some salvation.......2003-05-23

In these tales, most of them being sad and even very sad, Oscar Wilde looks for a way to save one's soul in front of the misery of the world. Anyone in society who lives in the upper classes does not necessarily see the ugliness and suffering of the world when one looks at the lower classes. But in these tales the Happy Prince, or the Selfish Giant, or any other character will manage to get salvation out of their upper class blindness, by opening their eyes to misery and suffering and by doing what they can to repair these pains and evils because they will realise they have to feel responsible for the world, because they are more powerful and could easily impose their selfish rule. But the giant will discover nature, if not God, punishes him for his selfishness. The nightingale will try to redeem a young student by giving him a red rose in a season when read roses do not bloom. And yet the student will not get the love he wants because he is nothing but a non-entity for the girl he would like to be loved by. There is also a very sad note in A Devoted Friend and how friendship can become a mask for selfishness, a nice appearance for an ugly and egoistic attitude. Those tales are sad and at the same time they convey a moral full of hope. All is not lost if the Happy Prince can give away his happiness for those who suffer, even if later the powerful of his society will reject him when he does not look happy and beautiful any more

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beyond compare!!!!.......1999-01-16

As a child I didn't have the books of Oscar Wilde but rather the records. My imagination soared with his descriptions of life, and my eyes overflowed with tears at each story. The record of the Happy Prince was read by Bing Crosby and Orson Wells and each year at Christmas we still play that old scratched thing, just to hear it's wonderous love story and that of The Selfish Giant. Now I have to get the book so my nieces and nephews will share in my treasures of love!!!! What is this world if it isn't all about Love?

    5 out of 5 stars wonderfully fanciful.......1998-05-20

I remember this book from my childhood. I had my parents read each story to me over and over. When I learned how to read I read this book until the pages fell out. In short it is a great book that encourages youthful imaginations. And, it makes for great bedtime stories. A real classic. I bought it for my children.

We've been enjoying this series starting with Good Night, Good Knight and this is another good one but not our favorite (the other 3 are a little better: Good Night, GK, Get Well, GK, and Take Care, GK). The Little Dragons try to make a special birthday for the Knight but with predictably messy results. She found the story silly and fun. We would recommend all of the Good Knight books

      Book Description

While flying to a warmer climate, a little swallow stops to rest in the great city. His short stay is extended, however, when he takes refuge at, and then makes friends with, the golden statue of The Happy Prince. From high atop his pedestal in the city park The Happy Prince has a birds-eye view of the sufferings of the people of the city. But, he is powerless to do anything. When the Prince entreats his new friend to stay and help him, a lesson in kindness and caring is in store for the little bird. Beloved since its original publication in 1888, this Oscar Wilde fairy tale is now set against a modern-day backdrop and written for young readers. Stunning, evocative paintings, along with a masterful retelling, breathe new life and meaning into this classic story of mindfulness and compassion for others. An excellent vehicle for character education programming, educators will find this story a valuable addition to their libraries.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The Happy Prince.......2007-09-12

The art work is spectacular but the ending is such a disappointment when compared to the original work. Eliminating the heavenly reward creates a shallow ending in my opinion. I'm sending this version back and getting the original to give as a gift.
Some stories should just be left unedited. I think this is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Retelling of The Happy Prince.......2007-01-19

It's been years since I read Wilde's The Happy Prince, so when I saw this sitting on the shelf at the library, I just had to check it out. Done in large, picture book style, Grodin's retelling of this classic children's tale is quite lovely. The book starts out with a bit about Wilde's life and ends with a page on homelessness and the virtue of "caring" which is nice, but well over the head or interest level of the children on the low end of the recommended age rage listed for this book (4-8), and though the story itself is fine for reading to children on the low end of the age range...my guess is that the subtleties of the message will be lost on most 4-5 year olds without adult prodding about the "lessons" of compassion and charity that this book has to offer. Still it's a classic and, I think a message worth giving and receiving.

Overall, The Happy Prince has never been a very "happy" book, that is to say, even in the original, the prince was melted down and the bird died...what's missing here is the bit where they get to go to heaven, chosen by one of God's angles as the two most precious things in the city. Grodin gave the book a more secular ending where the man charged with pitching them into the furnace decides they deserve better and buries them in the city center (presumably where the statue once stood), under a tree in a planter marked with the words compassion and kindness...so despite the loss of the direct Christian religious overtones of God and the virtues, Grodin manages to deliver the message of the original and I think that's wonderful. I give this version of The Happy Prince five stars, the text is lovely and the artwork is stunning and evocative of the story...at first dark and depressing and as the city becomes a happier, kinder, more compassionate place, it brightens and becomes lighter in look and feel.

1 out of 5 stars Should be no stars for ruining the ending.......2006-12-05

This is my favorite story of all-time but I would never recomend buying a version that alters the ending. I am an agnostic and even I think it is beyond insane to remove the most beautiful/moving part of the story --

" 'Bring me the two most precious things in the city,' said God to one of His Angels; and the Angel brought Him the leaden heart and the dead bird.

'You have rightly chosen,' said God, 'for in my garden of Paradise this little bird shall sing for evermore, and in my city of gold the Happy Prince shall praise me.' "

1 out of 5 stars Happy is the last thing to descibe this book........2006-11-12

While the lessons of compassion and charity are ones we'd all like to instill in our children, the story is dark and not appropriate for children at the lower end of the suggested age range. Not to give away the plot but, the happy prince gets melted down and the swallow dies. Their evententual reward, salvation (in the rescued from the scrap yard sense)and immortalization does not seem to be commensurate with their sacrifice. The subtleties were lost on my child. I didn't read the original Wilde so I can't offer a comparision.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for discussion.......2006-09-13

This book is a wonderful addition to any classroom discussions of kindness, selflessness, and compassion for others. The illustrations are beautiful and change as the story progresses and the resources of the prince are passed on to others. I recommend this to any teacher or parent as they encourage their children to consider the importance of helping others around them.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful piece of literature!.......2004-07-16

I am a big fan of Oscar Wilde, and this just proves even more how wonderful a writer he is. These stories are for the young and the old. You will laugh and cry. Wilde writes them in such simplicity that they are absolutely wonderful. I personally cried at the end of the story "The Happy Prince" and came very close to doing so for a good number of the other ones. Don't just think that these are sappy kiddy stories though because there is also a great deal of Wilde wit and sarcasm in them. You can't help but smile and laugh. This is really one of those books to share with your friends.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book with pretty fairy tales in it.......2003-05-16

I like this book because there are a few little interesting short stories in it. The fairy tales want to tell us something about social problems. If you read this book it opens your eyes so that you can see that there are these problems in our society too. But the book is also good for little children, because the fairy tales are written in a nice language. They are very pretty,
My favourite story in the book is „The Selfish Giant". Because first the Giant is very selfish and doesn't want the children to play in his garden but afterwards he sees the happiness of the children when they play in his garden and this gives him happiness too. Also the relationship between the little boy and the Giant is great.

5 out of 5 stars Nine lovely, tragic tales.......2002-01-12

I am no expert on Oscar Wilde, but I've been reading fairytales long enough to be able to tell the difference between an enchanting story and a bunch of pap. The nine magically airy yarns in this small collection are definitely in the first category.

"The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant" are perhaps the most famous of the nine. In the first story, the golden statue of a prince weeps for all the suffering people he sees and begs a swallow to strip him of his riches and distribute them to the masses. In the second tale, a giant builds a wall around his beautiful garden to keep out the noisy children, only to find out that he has also locked out the Spring.

"The Young King" is a variation on the theme of "A Happy Prince". When a young monarch learns of the suffering and misery caused by his requirement for a robe, a crown, and a sceptre, he refuses to handle any of these riches and is given a more fitting raiment by a Divine Power. Keeping with the royal theme is "The Star-Child", about a beautiful but horrible young boy whose physical appearance grows to match his ugly spirit. Another little bird appears in "The Nightingale and the Rose", to help a young man win the heart of the woman he loves.

The stories' themes include beauty, tragedy, agony, compassion, innocence, and (Platonic) love. Some characters give their lives, or sell their souls, in the name of love. There are also the same archetypes that appear in dreams: the Divine Child, the Trickster, the Wise Old Man or Woman, the Number 3, and more. Add all this to Wilde's delicate writing and gilded imagination, and you get some of the most original tales ever written.

Though most of these stories end happily, all end tragically. That is to say, even when the endings are happy, someone always dies. Each story manages to associate everything thrilling and exquisite about beauty with the starkness of death. Accordingly, not all of these tales are suitable for children. For example, one scene in "The Fisherman and His Soul" features witches dancing before the devil and the princess in "The Birthday of the Infanta" is a heartless child whose mockery leads to the death of a little dwarf. Though the stories are moral at the core, and often explicitly Christian, they do not always make sense.

Despite the faults, the keening, poignant loveliness shines through, making me want to read each story again and again and again.

        5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2000-05-22

This is the best book I've ever read.It is great for children as well as for grown ups,who shouldn't forget that they were children once too.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Tales of Great Worth.......2002-10-29

When I was quite small (I'm now 64) the 33 1/3 records were introduced. One of the first that we got was a recording of "The Happy Prince". It featured Bing Crosby. I listened to it over and over until I went off to college. Years later I was in England, and I discovered that there was a whole book of stories. Over the years I have re-read this book so much that it is now in tatters. Each story is a gem unto itself. Each story will become another jewel in your treasure chest of lenses, which help you to see the world more clearly. Now that I have discovered that this book is still in print, I expect to buy multiple copies to give as Christmas Gifts this year. 3 out of 5 stars a sad ending.......2006-03-28

Although the editorial reviews do a good job of describing the story and beautiful illustrations, I feel they left out a couple of important details. First, the ending is SAD...the bird dies and the prince's heart breaks in half. And second, the last page talks about God and his angels. This seemed out of place to me as the rest of the book did not have a religious tone. I thought a potential buyer might like to know that.
