Probability and Statistics in Experimental Physics (Undergraduate Texts in Contemporary Physics)
Byron P. Roe Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0387951636 |
Book Description
Intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, this book is a practical guide to the use of probability and statistics in experimental physics. The emphasis is on applications and understanding, on theorems and techniques actually used in research. The text is not a comprehensive text in probability and statistics; proofs are sometimes omitted if they do not contribute to intuition in understanding the theorem. The problems, some with worked solutions, introduce the student to the use of computers; occasional reference is made to routines available in the CERN library, but other systems, such as Maple, can also be used. Topics covered include: basic concepts; definitions; some simple results independent of specific distributions; discrete distributions; the normal and other continuous distributions; generating and characteristic functions; the Monte Carlo method and computer simulations; multi-dimensional distributions; the central limit theorem; inverse probability and confidence belts; estimation methods; curve fitting and likelihood ratios; interpolating functions; fitting data with constraints; robust estimation methods. This second edition introduces a new method for dealing with small samples, such as may arise in search experiments, when the data are of low probability. It also includes a new chapter on queuing problems (including a simple, but useful buffer length example). In addition new sections discuss over- and under-coverage using confidence belts, the extended maximum-likelihood method, the use of confidence belts for discrete distributions, estimation of correlation coefficients, and the effective variance method for fitting y = f(x) when both x and y have measurement errors. A complete Solutions Manual is available.

Data Analysis: Statistical and Computational Methods for Scientists and Engineers
Siegmund Brandt Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387984984 |
Book Description
This book bridges the gap between statistical theory and physcal experiment. It provides a thorough introduction to the statistical methods used in the experimental physical sciences and to the numerical methods used to implement them. An accompanying CD-ROM provides detailed code (in Fortran77 and in C) for implementing many of these algorithms (for IBM PS/2 or PC machines). The treatment emphasizes concise but rigorous mathematics but always retains its focus on applications. The reader is presumed to have a sound basic knowledge of differential and integral calulus and some knowledge of vectors and matrices (an appendix develops the vector and matrix methods used and provides a collection of related computer routines). After an introduction of probability, random variables, computer generation of random numbers (Monte Carlo methods) and impotrtant distributions (such as the biomial, Poisson, and normal distributions), the book turns to a discussion of statistical samples, the maximum likelihood method, and the testing of statistical hypotheses. The discussion concludes with the discussion of several important stistical methods: least squares, analysis of variance, polynomial regression, and analysis of tiem series. Appendices provide the necessary methods of matrix algebra, combinatorics, and many sets of useful algorithms and formulae. The book is intended for graduate students setting out on experimental research, but it should also provide a useful reference and programming guide for experienced experimenters. A large number of problems (many with hints or solutions) serve to help the reader testCustomer Reviews:
A Concentrated, Accessible, and Suprisingly Useful Reference.......2000-03-10
The book's subject range is achieved by sacrificing rigor and depth on the altar of accessability. This isn't nessesarily a bad compromise...
I find this book suprisingly useful to establish a beachhead when tackling a subject that is either new to me, or is many years past in my schooling.
It certainly makes for inspiring bathroom reading, and it remains the only book I'll bring to the beachhouse this summer.

Experimental Stochastics
Otto Moeschlin , Eugen Grycko , Claudia Pohl , and Frank Steinert Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: CD-ROM ASIN: 3540140301 |
Book Description
This electronic monograph deals with the generating and testing of artificial random numbers and demonstrates their applications in practice. Artificial random experiments allow to treat a large variety of problems. The software is organized according to areas of subjects: artificial randomness, stochastic models, stochastic processes, evaluation of statistical methods. The examples chosen range from the control of traffic lights at road bottlenecks to Maxwell's law on the velocity distribution of gases. The presentation of the material is done via appropriate computer visualization, and the theory behind the experiments is given in both the electronic component and the accompanying booklet. This product, presenting many well-prepared simulations, will be very useful for instructional purposes.

Experimental Stochastics in Physics
Otto Moeschlin , and Eugen Grycko Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: CD-ROM ASIN: 3540283625 |
Book Description
The electronic monograph Experimental Stochastics (stochastical simulation) in Physics deals with random experiments on the computer from the field of molecular dynamics. Based on stochastic dynamic models of molecular movement on the computer, macro quantities of interest, such as momentum distribution, temperature, pressure, and angular velocities of fluids, are estimated statistically. The standard techniques of stochastic simulation can be found in Experimental Stochastics (2nd ed., Springer 2003). This approach yields new and unexpected insights into physical behavior which cannot be established directly by laboratory physics. The method can also be applied to non-real contexts, where certain principles of real physics are dispensed with. Although supported theoretically, the working method allows the reader to gain experimental skills on a CD-ROM.

New Challenges in Superconductivity: Experimental Advances and Emerging Theories: Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, held in Miami, Florida, ... II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402030835 |
Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the 2004 University of Miami Workshop on Unconventional Superconductivity. The workshop was the fourth in a series of successful meetings on High-T C Superconductivity and related topics, which took place at the James L. Knight Physics Building on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Florida, in January 1991, 1995, 1999, and 2004.
The volume includes high-quality papers on state of the art works on unconventional superconductivity. A key issue, discussed by many in the workshop, was how homogeneous the cuprates are. STM data, as well as other reports, showed that the cuprate superconductors (SC's) studied were inhomogeneous, especially in the underdoped regime; while experiments, like ARPES and magnetoresistance have established the existence of a Fermi Surface, at least above some doping level, in the cuprates.
Other topics ranging from the pseudogap problem to pairing mechanisms are also discussed by various authors. In general, experiments show more convergence than high-T C theories. There is definitely no consensus on the high- T C mechanism, although two broad groups exist: those around the extended "Big Tent" homogenous scheme, and those who assume an intrinsic inhomogeneous state. Another division could be viewed between those who consider the high- T C mechanism to be essentially of an electronic-magnetic origin (with no role played by the lattice), and those who assign an important role to the lattice.
There seemed to be a consensus in the workshop that MgB2 and the fullerenes are simpler SC's than the cuprates, while work on ruthenocuprates and the coexistence of SC and ferromagnetism provided new stimuli to research and understanding. Interest was drawn also by the new Na xCoO 2•yH 2O SC. Although this is a low-T C material, its physical properties have a similarity to those of the cuprates; thus research on this system seems to be important for the understanding of high T C SC.
The volume gives a brief overview of many facets of present day superconductivity research and should be of great interest to all scientists and research students who work in the field of superconductivity or related subjects in condensed matter physics and material sciences.

Vergil's Eclogues
Barbara Hughes (trans.) Fowler Manufacturer: The University of North Carolina Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0807846538 Release Date: 1997-02-19 |
Book Description
Best remembered for his unfinished epic, the Aeneid, the poet Vergil was celebrated in his time both for the perfection of his art and for the centrality of his ideas to Roman culture. The Eclogues, his earliest confirmed work, were composed in part out of political considerations: when the Roman authorities threatened to seize his family's land, Vergil's appeal in the form of Eclogue IX won a stay. Eclogue I appears to be a thank-you for that favor.Barbara Hughes Fowler provides scholars and students with a new American verse translation of Vergil's Eclogues. An accomplished translator, Fowler renders the poet's words into an English that is contemporary while remaining close to the spirit of the original. In an introduction to the text, she compares the treatment of the pastoral form by Vergil and Theocritus, illuminating the ways in which Vergil borrowed from and built upon the earlier poet's work, and thereby moved the genre in a new direction.
