      Book Description

In this book, Kathryn M. Olesko reconstructs in fine detail the evolution, across the nineteenth century, of Franz Neumann's physics seminar at Knigsberg University in East Prussia. Established during a period of intense educational reform and intellectual debate in the sciences, the seminar turned out academic physicists as well as secondary school teachers. As the first official science seminar to incorporate mathematical considerations, Neumann's institute pioneered the integration of two quantitative traditions in physics--the mathematical and the exact experimental.

        Book Description

Bringing together classic and new writings of the trailblazing feminist theorist Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Feminism without Borders addresses some of the most pressing and complex issues facing contemporary feminism. Forging vital links between daily life and collective action and between theory and pedagogy, Mohanty has been at the vanguard of Third World and international feminist thought and activism for nearly two decades. This collection highlights the concerns running throughout her pioneering work: the politics of difference and solidarity, decolonizing and democratizing feminist practice, the crossing of borders, and the relation of feminist knowledge and scholarship to organizing and social movements. Mohanty offers here a sustained critique of globalization and urges a reorientation of transnational feminist practice toward anticapitalist struggles.

Feminism without Borders opens with Mohanty's influential critique of western feminism ("Under Western Eyes") and closes with a reconsideration of that piece based on her latest thinking regarding the ways that gender matters in the racial, class, and national formations of globalization. In between these essays, Mohanty meditates on the lives of women workers at different ends of the global assembly line (in India, the United Kingdom, and the United States); feminist writing on experience, identity, and community; dominant conceptions of multiculturalism and citizenship; and the corporatization of the North American academy. She considers the evolution of interdisciplinary programs like Women's Studies and Race and Ethnic Studies; pedagogies of accommodation and dissent; and transnational women's movements for grassroots ecological solutions and consumer, health, and reproductive rights. Mohanty's probing and provocative analyses of key concepts in feminist thought—"home," "sisterhood," "experience," "community"—lead the way toward a feminism without borders, a feminism fully engaged with the realities of a transnational world.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, a must-have for all feminists........2005-04-15

Feminism Without Borders is an excellent book, one of the best I have ever read. Mohanty is a strong advocate of a transformative, economically and socially just feminist politics. She defines herself as an anti-racist, anti-capitalist feminist. Her feminist vision is one of a truly free world where every person can enjoy true equality, security, and integrity, where there is "economic stability, ecological sustainability, racial equality, and the redistribution of wealth..." (3).

She is against colonization, with all the varying meanings this word carries, against any repressive ruling regimes. Throughout this book, she stresses three main concepts as frameworks of feminist politics: decolonization, anticapitalist critique, and solidarity. She says: "I firmly believe an antiracist feminist framework, anchored in decolonization and committed to an anticapitalist critique, is necessary at this time" (3).

Mohanty believes that feminist politics should be transformative and inclusive to be able to adequately adjust against the recent backlash and challenges posed against feminism. She adopts Franz Fanon's (1963) decolonization framework to deconstruct Western feminism as a tool of methodological colonization of Third World women. "If processes of sexism, heterosexism, and misogyny are central to the social fabric of the world we live in; if indeed these processes are interwoven with racial, national, and capitalist domination and exploitation such that the lives of women and men, girls and boys, are profoundly affected, then decolonization at all the levels (as described by Fanon) becomes fundamental to a radical feminist transformative project" (8).

Mohanty believes that feminism can be of greatest strength if it can find the balance between working with and across borders of division and separation such as those of race, class, nation, sexuality, religion, and disability. "I want to speak of feminism without silences and exclusions in order to draw attention to the tension between the simultaneous plurality and narrowness of borders and the emancipatory potential of crossing through, with, and over these borders in our everyday lives" (2). This vision of intersectionality has been the bases of many great scholarly works in feminist theory and thought recently.

In Chapter One "Under Western Eyes" of Part One "Decolonizing Feminism" Mohanty uses several examples of hegemonic Western feminist works that are characterized by reductionism. It is not possible to understand women's oppressions in simple terms or using a universal yardstick, nor is it objective to even use universal frameworks and ideologies to study and make generalizations about women's oppressions. "There is, it should be evident, no universal patriarchal framework that [Western feminist] scholarship attempts to counter and resist - unless one posits an international male conspiracy or a monolithic, ahistorical power structure" (20). In fact, the very premise that all women around the world are oppressed and victimized by men is a narrowly defined, ethnocentric assumption that only exacerbates divisions, highlights borders, and reiterates Western imperialism. "The assumption of women as an already constituted, coherent group with identical interests and desires, regardless of class, ethnic, or racial location, or contradictions, implies a notion of gender or sexual difference or even patriarchy that can be applied universally and cross-culturally" (21).

While exploring the logic traps that Western feminists fall into while studying "Third World" women and by showing how the binary analytic of "us vs. them" is thus created, Mohanty deconstructs the notion of Global Sisterhood. "Sisterhood cannot be assumed on the basis of gender; it must be forged in concrete historical and political practice and analysis" (24). I particularly like the philosophy of feminist solidarity as opposed to, and as a replacement for, sisterhood. "Rather than assuming an enforced commonality of oppression, the practice of solidarity foregrounds communities of people who have chosen to work and fight together. Diversity and difference are central values here - to be acknowledged and respected, not erased in the building of alliances" (7).

        Book Description

Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar. . . .Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors of this city, part of a vast system of barriers that divides the entire continent of Europe. From the Baltic, south, those barriers cut across Germany in a gash of barbed wire, concrete, dog runs, and guard towers. Farther south, there may be no visible, no obvious wall. But there remain armed guards and checkpoints all the same -- still a restriction on the right to travel, still an instrument to impose upon ordinary men and women the will of a totalitarian state.
Ronald Reagan delivered these words as part of his famous "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" speech of June 1987. Two years later, that wall did in fact come down. The Lost Border is the astonishing and powerful visual record of that transformation, published on the fifteenth anniversary of the wall's collapse.
Acclaimed photographer Brian Rose began shooting the borderlands between East and West -- from the Baltic Sea down to the Adriatic -- in the early 1980s, while the Cold War was still hot, and has been taking pictures of this eerie terrain ever since. The Lost Border documents the gradual disintegration of the Berlin Wall and the busy reclamation of what was -- and sometimes still remains -- a scarred and brutalized landscape.

5 out of 5 stars All along the Iron Curtain.......2006-10-12

With photos taken in the mid 1980s the author takes us on a pictorial trip along the former Iron Curtain from the Baltic sea coast at Travemunde (West-East Germany) to the Adriatic sea coast at Trieste (Italy-Yugolsalvia [today Slovenia]); with a separate chapter on the Berlin Wall. They are superb photos full of (sad) atmosphere, poignancy and historical importance. Like another reader, I just wish there were more of them. The chapters with photos from the period following the collapse of the Soviet empire and thus its lengthy prison wall with the west are relevant too. The author doesn't provide any lengthy description of the physical nature of the fortifications, history of escape attempts, as well as the constrast in the lives of people on each side of the borders but that has been the subject of other books and there is no need to; the brief comments combined with the pictures are all you need to appreciate it.

        5 out of 5 stars Revisionst.......2005-10-02

The Lost Border by Brian Rose fulfills an historical need by photographing the Iron Curtain before it was relegated to the dustbin of history. The photos are are in color and fill the need of being historical rather than some modern black and white modern art form which would have defeated the whole purpose of the book. I have walked the Berlin Wall many times in the 60's & 70's to take photos and aggravate the guards and for me to see the rest of the Iron Curtain in this large format book was a pleasure. I compliment Mr Rose on his endeavor. These photos show the stark reality of the evil of communism in clear detail. The Lost Border is an asset to any library; home or otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Great Idea for a Photo Book.......2005-09-30

I haven't seen anyone else put together a book like this, with shots from all along the Iron Curtain in the Cold War. My only disappointment was that there's not more of it - because the work in here is excellent, and I would have loved for it to not end so soon. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in what the Soviets did to Eastern Europe until the fall of communism.

5 out of 5 stars breathtaking and chilling.......2005-08-15

I grew up behind that border, lived in this grey cold world. The photographs brought back a lot of supressed memories. Looking through the book, I realized that these memories should be kept alive. Awesome and chilling at the same time. I would recommend this book to anyone....the era has passed but it was real. A lot of lives were lost at that border and many untold stories are buried with it. To me that book is a tribute to all who suffered in the name of freedom, I was just one of many.

This is a double book written by one of Arizona's greatest ranchers. Set in Northern Mexico in the 1930's and Northern Arizona in the 1940's, it tells of some of the great old ranches. Some of these old Cowpunchers are still around after all these years! A great read.

                Book Description

Gallya Lahav's study examines the issue of immigration in the context of a Europe where the role of the nation state is in question, as the logic of the single market clashes with national policymaking. Immigration is a central issue in European politics since around a quarter of the world's migrants reside in Europe. Consequently, politicians throughout the continent are grappling with the problems this raises. Analyzing elite and public opinion, Lahav's book shows how support from both has led to the adoption of restrictive immigration policies despite the requirements of open borders.

                4 out of 5 stars Great Tex-Mex border western.......2005-12-25

This is perhaps my all-time favorite "western" novel. Set on either side of the El Paso Del Norte border (El Paso, Texas on the USA side), featuring an American who has grown up in Mexico and is a combination ranch hand/pistolero for a Mexican ranchero. It's the tail of his trip north of the border on business for the ranchero, and his awakening to his "homeland" while recuperating from a broken leg that keeps him from returning to Mexico. His horse, Lagrimas (Spanish for "Tears") is featured throughout, showing the bond a man has with his, very special, horse.

This is somewhat less action-oriented, and more "adult" than your typical Louis Lamour western, but should satisfy even the typical L.L. fan and then some.

I first read this as a teenager (14-15), and have re-read it many times over the years. I may buy another copy for each of my three sets of grandkids, for part of their education.

Funny, insightful, and inspiring, this book tells how that year abroad changed their outlook on life, and also explains how others thinking of making a change can do it, too.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging Story and Practical Guide.......2003-03-29

If you are thinking of living abroad with your children, there are two compelling reasons to read this book. First, the author shares his and his family's real-life experiences, both good and bad. He reminds us that life anywhere is just that -- life, complete with victories and accomplishments, as well as mistakes and disappointments. His entertaining story of their year in Prague helped replace some of my romantic notions with visions of reality. I now feel more prepared to face the challenges of life abroad if and when we decide to "live outside the borders." The other reason to buy this book is its wealth of resources and practical tips. Although the organization was at times scattered, the appendices help to make up for this.

A Family Year Abroad: How To Live Outside The Borders is the story of the Westphal family. Chris and Stephanie Westphal wanted to travel, but since they had responsibilities to their children, the only way they could do so was to travel with the whole family. They rented their house, put their bank accounts in safekeeping, and moved to Prague, Czech Republic for a year. A Family Year Abroad is their story, packed with wisdom, experience, tips, and much more on such things as culture shock, foreign schools, traveling with kids and health and safety concerns. A lively, involving book, A Family Year Abroad is much more than just a family memoir, it also offers practical tips on how to successfully live in a foreign country and deal with changes in the family, health and safety concerns, insurance questions, the management of finances, foreign schools, and the inescapable phenomena of culture shock.

In _A Family Year Abroad_, Chris Westphal invites us into his experience with a dream many of us have had--living abroad in an exotic foreign country--but which most of us never get around to making real. He weaves together practical tips with a delightful narrative of his own adventures and misadventures as an expatriate family in Prague. Combining detailed, practical tips with insightful personal observations, Chris succeeds in bringing us along on an amazing trip into unknown--an unknown that, with Chris' help, is made known to us vicariously. Reading _A Family Year Abroad_ I really came to feel what it must have been like to "live outside the borders" for Chris and his family. And while not ALL of his adventures--a night at the "opera" that featured a midget pushing a wheelbarrow across a darkened stage, for instance--made me hunger for the expatriate experience, I certainly felt that they prepared me for taking my own family abroad should we be so bold as to try it. All in all, a great read: exciting, funny, helpful, practical, poignant, and witty. It's Rick Steve's _Europe Through the Back Door_ meets S.J. Perelman's _Eastward Ha!_ with a bit of Theroux's_Mosquito Coast_ thrown in for fun. Loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth It!.......2001-10-02

I enjoyed reading "A Family Year Abroad" for both its informative content as well as its witty and humorous interjections. The book recognizes and addresses both practical as well as personal issues that arise during such an adventure. I lived abroad for 18 months and wish that I had had half of the current and relevant information that can be found in the pages of "A Family Year Abroad." I relied on several other travel guides, and while they were helpful I felt that the information was dated. This book is packed with insightful, current, and useful information for today's traveler.
