Operator Algebras and Quantum Statistical Mechanics 1: C*- and W*-Algebras. Symmetry Groups. Decomposition of States (Theoretical and Mathematical Physics)
ASIN: 3540614435 |
Book Description
For almost two decades this has been the classical textbook on applications of operator algebra theory to quantum statistical physics. It describes the general structure of equilibrium states, the KMS-condition and stability, quantum spin systems and continuous systems.Major changes in the new edition relate to Bose--Einstein condensation, the dynamics of the X-Y model and questions on phase transitions. Notes and remarks have been considerably augmented.

There has been a huge resurgence of interest in Dune Buggies (Beach Buggies) - kit cars based on the chassis and running gear of fatally corroded VW Beetles. Here is the complete step-by-step practical guide to the equipment and building techniques needed to build a Buggy, as well as sound guidance on the choice of donor car and new components. With this manual in your workshop, you can build any VW-based Dune Buggy avoiding all the common pitfalls and money-sapping mistakes, and end up with a superb, roadworthy multi-purpose vehicle.

Could do with a few more options........2007-01-12
A well thought out and informative book. My only fault with it would be that it is very specific to the style of dune buggy that the author builds. My own research has revealed there are lots of different paths to take in building a dune buggy (not to mention baja bugs, all terain buggys, etc). A chapter covering these styles and where to find information on them would be a nice touch.
Lots of great tips and tricks and how to avoid mistakes makes it very true to its title. Has left me very satisfied with my purchase.
Worth Having.......2007-01-09
Good book. Goes into heavy detail on how to shorten the pan. But doesnt cover every area as well. Chapter on tools could have been left out, chances are if your going to build a buggy you already have the basic tools. I already built a buggy (prior to purchasing this book) so most of the information I already knew. Good book to have just for the pan shortening info. I welcome any new books written on the dunebuggy subject. Written in UK english.
Building a Dune Buggy: The Essential Manual.......2007-01-09
Somes chapters of book aren`t focused in specifics dune buggy matters, but general car matters, like tools, safety and brakes. The best part is the chapter chassis shortening methods, very detailed; I felt a lack of information about the dune buggy body, like a shell plan or a path to build it, but if you don`t known anything about buggy building, this book can be a good start.

'Reason not the need The basest beggars are in the poorest thing superfluous'.......2007-08-13
Given that thousands of volumes have been devoted to Shakespeare I believe it a bit presumptuous to believe one can define and present the 'essential' Shakespeare. Essential to whom? And 'essential' in what way?
Nonetheless this book has much information about Shakespeare, about the plays which it covers one by one, about the characters all of whom it lists, about the major 'genres' of Shakespeare's writing, about the way the plays have been played.
It does not however what I personally consider essential to the reading of Shakespeare, the criticism of Samuel Johnson, of Coleridge. of Bradley of C.S. Knight, and even Harold Bloom and Stephen Greenblatt. There is no effort at deep interpretative insight.
It again does provide information which will be especially valuable for many in regard to Shakespeare's lesser known works.
It can be read with enjoyment.
I would only suggest that with Shakespeare for whom abundance and richness in language and in character are so great that the 'essential' itself is not sufficient.
Essential for Shakespeare.......2007-05-22
These days it is hard to read Shakespeare without some sort of support reading, a companion to help make the reading clearer. This book does that as well as discuss Shakespeare's life and works in accurate, or as accurate as it can be, detail. I used this book to do a small research paper on Shakespeare. I had several other sources and this book had all of that information plus some. The matierial presented in "Essential Shakespeare Handbook" is often interesting facts that make reading it fun. This book is a good companion book to have with you while reading Shakespeare. I have read more thorough guides to Shakespeare, but this one ranks high on my list.
Nevermore Fear Shakespeare.......2007-03-03
Did you know that Shakespeare introduced about 1500 new words into the English language? According to this book, this was not only because Shakespeare was a genius. "When Shakespeare began writing plays and poems, the English language was absorbing new words more rapidly than ever before or since." This was due to a convergence of factors succintly described in this easy-to-read, beautifully-illustrated, and visually interesting book.
Do you just want to know what happens in The Tempest, or want to see who the characters are, or need an act-by-act breakdown, or do you want to know the ratio of prose to verse in the play? It's all here. Do you want to see some great pictures of past productions? Do you want to know the dates of the tragedies? Want to understand what Hamlet really meant by "to be or not to be"? Want to know what theater was like when Shakespeare wrote or what the period was like in which he lived? You got it here. The only thing you can't find here is an index to Shakespeare quotes. (See G. F. Lamb "Shakespeare Quotations" and Michael Macrone "Brush Up Your Shakespeare!" for two good ones.)
The most wonderful thing about this book is how easy (and fun) it is to learn from. You need fear Shakespeare no more!

Fantastic Shakespeare Resource.......2007-01-08
This is a fantastic Shakespeare Resource for the everyday person who is interested in knowing more. Spread out clearly with plenty of pictures and interesting facts - this book is a joy to flick through and offers easy to find information.
Really, really good.
Great overview.......2006-11-20
Some people are apparently fooled by the apparent shallowness of this book. Don't be.
There's a wealth of information in here: play synopses, character descriptions, play backgrounds, and historical notes. There's also line counts and analyses on each play on the usage of prose & verse. There are helpful icons used everything to indicate types of characters, plays, etc. and it's a more "visual" book than your tpical Shakespeare book. Some people call it "eye candy" and I call it "reader friendly".
There's not a lot of deep analysis in this book, but that's not what it's about...there are other books for that. This is a broad and intelligent overview of all the plays presented in a compact and attractive format.

For collectors.......2007-02-07
It's a cd for collectors. You can almost hear all the 'legends' of British Theatre: Judi Dench, Lorens Olivier, Paul Scofield.
Book Description
What famous essayist insisted that Shakespeare's play were unfit for performance?
Which two plays center on the Hundred Years' War?
In which scene of Romeo and Juliet does the nurse report--falsely--that Juliet is dead and thus seal Romeo's tragic fate?
The answers are easily found in Shakespeare A to Z, the only single-volume reference to virtually everything one needs--or wants--to know about the Bard. Wonderfully informative, this comprehensive work includes 3,000 entries and 50 illustrations.

Don't Judge by the Cover.......2006-08-09
Don't let the overly casual cover mislead you. This book provides excellent understandable commentary on Shakespeare's works. Using the "dictionary format" one may have to look up the invidual characters within a play, in addition to the play itself, to get all the pertinent information. But what excellent information it is! It contains better plot summaries, including character motivation, play sources, "real" facts for historical characters, and performance information presented more clearly and concisely than similar books. Good for virually all levels of study, reading, or watching the plays.
One Great Book.......2005-03-14
I am a student in high school and this book saved me a lot of time and energy while writing a research paper for English. Any part of "A MIdsummer Night's Dream" that I didn't understnad was right there, explained in terms that anyone could understand. It helped me develop my thesis, and overall saved my paper from a certain 'C+' grade. It was a great book.
Great fun for the Shakespeare fan!.......2004-06-27
I love this book. It's fun to keep it handy and just flip through the pages from time to time. Charles Boyce presents from A ("Aaron" in Titus Andronicus) to Z (Zeffirelli, Franco"), an outrageous potpourri of the fictional and the real, the historic and the apocryphal, the comic and the scholarly. It's crammed with commentary, scene-by-scene synopses of plays, character background, background on the sources for the plays, biographical information on Shakespeare and lots of fun trivial information, too. I know my Shakespeare fairly well, but this delightful book always teaches me something new. (For example, there's an entry for the real-life inspiration for Shakespeare's line in HENRY VIII about "some Indian with the great tool come to court.") I think this book would be a great gift for Shakespeare fans. And if you're going to get a Complete Works for the student you know, why not splurge and get this one, too? It's the perfect companion to Shakespeare and easily accessible to all ages.
Life Savor!!.......2003-02-03
I'm just a student in high school, and not long ago was recieved the part as Lady Macbeth for our school play Macbeth. My drama teacher recommended this book to me to get an in depth analysis of my character and the rest of the play. I bought the book and I was totally blown away. The information packed in here is tremendous. In this book is everything you'll ever need to know about each play and every character, even if they don't have a speaking part. This book has also helped me with the other Shakespeare plays I read during school for Literature. It's a great study and reference. It's helped me understand so much about the characters and the play, I recommend this to anyone who reads Shakespeare for school or anything, this tells you things even your teacher wouldn't know. It's been truly a life savor, to me and the rest of my cast who couldn't understand what was going on or what their character was about.
The Shakespeare students' best friend!.......2001-11-15
I'm a Shakespeare major, and my shelves are bowing under the weight of all my Shakespeare books. SHAKESPEARE A TO Z is the book I reach for most often, whenever I've got questions about the plays.
This book truly is the essential reference, but it is much more than a typical reference book. It's readable, interesting, and thorough. Inside, you'll find passages on every single one of Shakespeare's characters, no matter how minor; detailed analysis, as well as an act-by-act plot summary, on EVERY play; information on locations used in the plays, and MUCH more. Virtually every topic/character/place/important thing in a play is covered in this book.
I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Shakespeare's plays, or is involved in the study of Shakespeare. This book not only serves as an accesssible reference, it's also full of thought-provoking facts and ideas.

Customer Reviews:
The title says it all - a compact, compelling reference work.......2007-01-09
Anyone who feels he doesn't know enough about Shakespeare but doesn't know where to begin should have this.
It is enjoyable reading straight through to get a feel for the entire period and Shakespeare's contemporaries, or useful as an alphabetical guide to Shakespeare's works. The entries are all from essays commissioned for Encyclopedia Brittanica, but none is longer than 10 pages and some just a few pages, so they can be read in easy, often spicy bites.
Among the various topics are music in Shakepeare's plays, the Globe theatre, the Wars of the Roses, Elizabethan poetry and prose, the social and intellectual context, his treatment of sexuality, and films of Shakespeare's plays. A curiosity among the works is Edward III, on which Shakespeare may have collaborated.
The biographical sketches include Anne Hathaway, Queen Elizabeth, Sir Francis Bacon, Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe, Edmund Spenser, and numerous others including political figures. The theatrical connections and customs of the times and their influence upon Shakespeare's works are colorfully presented, and the companies discussed include the King's Men for whom Shakespeare was chief dramatist, the prestigious Lord Chamberlain's Men, with which Shakespeare collaborated, as well as the theatres in the "liberties," outside London legal jurisdiction.
But - did Shakespeare really write his plays? Well, after reading the chapter on "Authorship," the reader won't ask that again. Or, as my high school senior English teacher put it: If Shakespeare didn't write his works, then someone with the same name did.
My only criticism is the placement of several essays out of alphabetical order: the one on music comes under the essay on "King Lear," the one on opera under "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and the one on film under "Romeo and Juliet." Be warned in advance and use the table of contents.
The extensive bibliography covers the many phases of Shakespeare research, such as modern editions, staging Shakespeare, feminist criticism and gender issues, and Shakespeare's language and imagery. Thus, this little book is also a guide to further Shakespeare study by experts on the subject.
All of this for only $14.95 in paperback!

Essential Shakespeare.......2006-05-12
As a 3rd Year English Student, I highly reccomend this collection. While I already own the Oxford Shakespeare: The Complete Works, this book I find offers a unique way of reading Shakespeare. Ted Hughes offers a brilliant introduction in which he relates how Shakespeare can be read on two very unique levels. Plays in their entirety, and the way that this book offers selections, exerpted speeches and soliloquies. Taken out of context, the various collected tid-bits stand on their own and allow the reader to absord the text and poetry without being constrained by characterization and plot development, a more abstract quality is given to the works and the texts stand by themselves in a distinct way. Worth picking up, cheers.
