      Book Description

Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.

        Book Description

Electrical Engineering Magnetic Hysteresis Understanding magnetic hysteresis is vitally important to the development of the science of magnetism as a whole and to the advancement of practical magnetic device applications. Magnetic Hysteresis, by acclaimed expert Edward Della Torre, presents a clear explanation of the connection between physical principles and phenomenological hysteresis. This comprehensive book offers a lucid analysis that enables the reader to save valuable time by reducing trial-and-error design. Dr. Della Torre uses physical principles to modify Preisach modeling and to describe the complex behavior of magnetic media. While Pretsach modeling is a useful mathematical tool, its congruency and deletion properties present limitations to accurate descriptions of magnetic materials. Step-by-step, this book describes the modifications that can overcome these limitations. Special attention is given to the use of feedback around a Preisach transducer to remove the congruency restriction, and to the use of accommodation and aftereffect models to remove the deletion restriction. Magnetic state selection rules are introduced to couple scalar Preisach models to form a vector model. Magnetic Hysteresis is indispensable reading for engineers, physicists, and materials scientists who want to gain a better understanding of hysteresis losses and create more energy-efficient motor designs.

              Book Description

Theory of Superconductivity is considered one of the best treatments of the field. This monograph, by Nobel Prize-winning physicist J. Robert Schrieffer, has been reprinted because of its enduring value as an introduction to the theory of superconductivity. Based on a series of lectures presented by the author at the University of Pennsylvania, the fundamentals of the theory of superconductivity are stressed as a means of providing the reader with a framework for the literature in which detailed applications of the microscopic theory are made to specific problems. It also serves as a foundation for the more recent developments in this active field.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......2007-04-10

This classic book on superconductivity is excellent for an experienced reader who has already some background in superconductivity. However, for a student trying to learn superconductivity, it says too many things in too brief which may be difficult to follow. While teaching a course I would prefer to follow a book like Superconductivity by Ketterson and Song and refer to this book for selected (special) topics.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Introduction to an Amazing Field.......2004-08-03

The theory of superconductors is an amazingly complicated and rich field, and it can be very daunting to begin studying without a large background in physics. This book does an excellent job telling you the details enough to understand what is going on without giving you so much that it becomes a daunting task to read the book.

Having only read through the first three chapters so far, I give that caveat before continuing.

The first chapter, the author says upfront, is difficult to follow, as it gives a quick outline of every future chapter in the book. I would recommend skimming the first chapter, and then after reading each chapter go back and see if you got the key points illustrated in the first chapter.

The second chapter, a treatment of the London equations, does an excellent job deriving the London equations in the first section, then providing a great deal of application of the equations, as well as outlining the limits of that model of superconductors.

Chapter 3 is where the book gets down to business, as Tinkham gives an introduction to BCS theory. This treatment uses plausibility arguements to justify many of the conclusions or assumptions, but also provides some guidance to the mathematical rigor you might use to really prove the assertions you make. The chapter does not leave you feeling very confused at all, and the section can be read almost straight through.

Although I have not read any further into the book, I can only imagine that it is more of the same. I would strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in learning something about superconductors before trying something more rigorous, such as Schrieffer's classic text on the work.

5 out of 5 stars A basic reference in the field.......2000-03-30

This book provides an excellent comprehensive review of most of the aspects relevant to superconductivity. A strong basis in physics is required to follow it all the way. Otherwise, it is possible to read most of the chapters separately without loosing continuity, so the more complex ones can be put aside if the reader is not interested in deep physics. Many references to relevant authors are given all along the text. It should be a reference available to all the people seriously involved in superconductivity. The only bad point is that it uses CGS unit rather than SI units.

              Book Description

The main topic of the book are the superconducting dipole and quadrupole magnets needed in high-energy accelerators and storage rings for protons, antiprotons or heavy ions. The basic principles of low-temperature superconductivity are outlined with special emphasis on the effects which are relevant for accelerator magnets. Properties and fabrication methods of practical superconductors are described. Analytical methods for field calculation and multipole expansion are presented for coils without and with iron yoke. The effect of yoke saturation and geometric distortions on field quality is studied. Persistent magnetization currents in the superconductor and eddy currents the copper part of the cable are analyzed in detail and their influence on field quality and magnet performance is investigated. Superconductor stability, quench origins and propagation and magnet protection are addressed. Some important concepts of accelerator physics are introduced which are needed to appreciate the demanding requirements on field quality in large storage rings. The operational experience with the superconducting HERA collider serves as an illustration. Finally superconducting correction coils and practical construction and fabrication methods of accelerator magnets are discussed. The physical and technical principles described in the book are substantiated with a wealth of experimental data on multipoles, persistent- and eddy-current effects, quench performance and much more.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to Superconducting Accelerator Magnets.......2003-02-18

The book is an excellent introduction into the rather special field of superconducting accelerator magnets. All key aspects of NbTi dipole and quadrupole magnets are described by experts with practical experience.

Starting with an introduction into low temperature superconductivity and accelerator physics the book describes NbTi superconductor manufacturing, magnetic field calculations including persistent current effects, cryogenic implications of superconducting magnets, magnet manufacturing and the measuring techniques to verify magnet performance. For the experts the book also contains some useful tables on material properties relevant for the manufacturing and operation of superconducting magnets.

In summary the book presents a lot of useful information in a very concise and easy to understand way. The book is highly recommended.

                Book Description

This is a text on superconductivity, an area of intense research activity worldwide. The book is in three parts. The first covers the London, Pippard and GinzburgSHLandau theories, which are used to discuss a wide range of phenomena involving surface energies, vorticity, the intermediate and mixed states, boundaries and boundary conditions, the upper critical field in bulk, thin film and anisotropic superconductors, and surface superconductivity. The second part discusses the microscopic theory of Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer. The theory is used to discuss quasi particle tunneling and the Josephson effects from a microscopic point of view. The final part of the book treats nonuniform superconductors using the BogoliubovSHde Gennes approach with which it is possible to extract many important results without invoking Green's function methods. This text will be of great interest to graduate students taking courses in superconductivity, superfluidity, many body theory, and quantum liquids. It will also be of value to research workers in the field of superconductivity.

                  In this remarkable debut novel
set in San Diego, 16-year-old Claire thinks she is pregnant. As spring turns
into summer, she learns all about motherhood—especially single motherhood—
from four fascinating women who meet around a turquoise, community pool.

Claire’s mother, Virginia, is HIV positive, a gutsy southerner on an unusual
quest. Claire’s boyfriend’s mother, Molly, a poetic soul, has left behind a world
of spousal abuse in Seattle. Renata, another mother, is an elegant, New York
lawyer who watches her picture-perfect life come undone. And Dorie, a wild
would-be writer and young mother, seeks to feel at whatever cost. Until the
                  unspeakable happens.

Like The Joy Luck Club, Waiting to Exhale, and How To Make An American
Quilt, The Deeper, The Bluer is about the friendship between women, about
mothers and daughters, about celebration and loss. It also reveals the aching
desire of a teenage girl to save her mother, make sense of her world, to love
and be loved. As Claire says, “Real love must be the tightest sucking in of
breath, a hold so pure and blue, the deepest blue you can imagine.”
An unforgettable and moving story that will resonate long after it’s been read.

5 out of 5 stars A Million Dollar Movie for sure--Why isn't on the NYTimes.......2002-03-08

This book is so well written and would be such a great
commercial success if it were made into a movie. This
writer expresses what is going on in our society and how
it feels to be a single mother and what one encounters and
                  she expresses it like poetry........fantastic.....beautifully.
THIS SHOULD BE MADE INTO A MOVIE.

5 out of 5 stars Great stories - easy read.......2001-04-24

I borrowed this book from my sister because I wanted an easy read for my beach vacation. I ended up reading it in one sitting! I was surprized I was so quickly absorbed into the lives of the characters and related so well to them because I'm not a single mother nor a mother at all. It was much better then the usual vacation book not only because I enjoyed it more but I was thinking about the characters afterwards. I recommend it highly. I hope they make it into a movie and I look forward to reading another of her books!

                  5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2001-04-24

I am not a single mother nor a mother of any kind but I loved this book. I bought it for a beach vacation because a friend of mine told me about it. I ended up reading it in one sitting because it was such an easy and entertaining read. I was surprized because I was really absorbed by the characters (a teenage girl and even the older woman with AID's)and there were moments where my eyes filled with tears which I didn't expect. It would make a great movie. I hope she writes another one!

                  5 out of 5 stars Single Mothershood.......2001-04-22

Barbara Field's The Deeper, the Bluer was a joy to read. I couldn't put this book down until I finished it and it's been a while since I've found a book that kept me so interested throughout. Although I am not a single Mom, I often wonder what it is like to be one and this book brought that answer to light in a very real, open, vivid and honest way. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Deeper, The Bluer.......2001-01-21

This is my favorite kind of book -- one that holds me rapt with a fast-paced, entertaining story while also indulging my love of language with beautiful, lyrical passages and vivid, memorable imagery. The Deeper, The Bluer celebrates the everyday heroism of single mothers and made me proud to be both a mother and a woman. I couldn't put this wonderful book down and ended up reading it in one sitting! My recommendation? Buy it and keep it. This author is going to be big, big, big -- and when that happens you'll have a first edition of her first book
