4 out of 5 stars Has things over BSL.......2007-02-25

This is one of the few texts that treats karman number analysis of fluid flow. Also like unit op by g.g.brown, it covers flow through porous media which BSL doesn't. Over all this text is better in application than BSL while being as rigorous.

1 out of 5 stars OK for a review of the material.......2000-02-13

The focus of this book is on the mathematics of transport phenomena with little regard to applications or accessibility to students. A broad range of topics are condensed into a single book that reads like the hastily prepared lecture notes of the professors. The poor quality of the typesetting, figures and illustrations is frustrating - making the reading process painfully arduous. This is probably the last book I would turn to for information on the subjects listed in the title (most of which is better covered in the 1960's classic Transport Phenomena by Bird, et. al.).

1 out of 5 stars It was boring as paint drying.......1999-10-07

This book was extremely dry. The subjects brought up in the book had no real applications and was only pleasing to those whose fun time is filled with boundry layer equations and diffusion of dilute gases in my butt.

    Book Description

While Mass Transfer Operations is a required course in every undergraduate chemical engineering program in the world, there does not exist a comprehensive text on the subject that is specifically tailored to the undergraduate reader. Principles and Modern Applications of Mass Transfer Operations responds to this need, providing a thorough, accessible text that presents the latest advances in the science as well as sets of targeted questions that challenge students’ knowledge.

The focus throughout Jaime Benitez’s peerless study is on making the student consider computation from the start of a mass transfer dilemma. Twenty-five to thirty problems at the end of each chapter ensure that readers will remain actively engaged with the material. Principles incorporates examples of computational software such as Mathcad 2001, Matlab®, Mathematica, and Aspen Graphics, and also includes an ftp site that offers problems for each of these software applications as well as a Solutions Manual. Chapters encompass:

    -Fundamentals of mass transfer
    -Convective mass transfer
    -Interphase mass transfer
-Equipment for gas-liquid mass transfer operations
    -Absorption and stripping
    -Distillation
    -Liquid-liquid extraction

Ideal for a first course in mass transfer operations, this text will also prove valuable to chemical and environmental engineers, researchers, and university faculty.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent undergraduate mass transfer book.......2005-09-23

This book is amazing! The way the author presents the theory, formulas and applications followed by an example is an effective way to understand the material. Another good thing about the book is that at the start of every section there are objectives which gives you a scope of what are the themes that you must learn. This book is very practical, specially in chapters of absorption, desorption (packed, sieve tray) and distillation columns. What makes this book an amazing one is the integration of the mass transfer phenomena with the mathetical computer program, MathCAD to solve tedious problems. The author presents MathCAD routines in the chapters and also in some of the appendixes. All you have to do is copy those routines and you are instantly solving problems. This is very useful in the design of separation columns (chapters 4 - 6) and when calculating diffusion coefficients (chapter 1). This book is as great as its author, believe me I took some courses with him, unfortunetly I couldn't take mass transfer with him. =(

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mass transfer book.......2003-07-11

If your program splits transport phenomena into separate fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer classes, this would be an excellent text for the mass transfer class. The author does an excellent job of explaning the diference between mass transfer coefficients and diffusion coefficients compared to the generic tranport phenomena texts. He also integrates some of the recent developments in the literature into his treatise on mass transfer. Finally and the most interesting aspect of the book is the integration of a computer algebra system, specifically Mathcad into the problem solving process. Overall an excellent text.

    5 out of 5 stars A very didactic approach to mass-transfer operations........2002-12-21

The author of this book takes a very effective approach to introduce the reader to the complexities of mass-transfer operations design. From the very beginning of the book, the author guides the reader into a hands-on approach to calculations using MathCad programs to simplify tedious calculations that are usually a roadblock to the learning process. To make it even more convenient, an ftp site is available (see the Wiley.com page for the book) from which you can download the MathCad example programs and the Solutions Manual. I think that this book will soon become the standard textbook for mass-transfer operations.

5 out of 5 stars A new way of looking into mass transfer.......2000-03-27

The book starts by deriving the Maxwell-Stefan equations, the correct framwork to deal with multicomponent mass transfer problems and comparing it with the more traditional approaches to multicomponent mass transfer. Some chapters on estimation of diffusivities and mass transfer coefficients follow. In the second part, the book jumps into interphase mass transfer, where the theory is fully applied to derive "working equations". These chapters treat in a unified way all the problems that previously requieres empricial, approximate or separate treatments. The chapter on simultaneous heat and mass transfer is particularly good.

The book has a third part on design, where the focus is set on practical aspects of the theroy developed in previous chapters. It has "real life" examples on distillation, absorption and condensation, and many other applications are treated as exercises. This helps the reader to get in touch with the applications of the theory.

This is a book useful for advanced students, scientists and engineers who want to go a step further in their understanding of the physical principles behind mass transfer. The book is very balanced between theory and application and provides the basis for extending the theory to any mass transfer problem ever imagined. The book is very concise, and always thinks about the usefulness of the theory, there are no useless things here. It comes with a disk with the problems solved in MathCad, something that proves very handy.

I liked the book very much, and I think it is much better than the traditional books on the field, which looked more like cookbooks that engineering books. This book is going to be a classic. Highly reccomended.

      Book Description

Not long ago, American manufacturing was in sharp decline. The Big Three carmakers closed dozens of plants, mostly in Michigan and other surrounding states, eliminating more than 250,000 jobs. Another quarter of a million workers lost their jobs in related industries. Now United States manufacturing is making a comeback--thanks, in part, to the transplanting of Japanese corporations of over 25 billion dollars worth of heavy industry and 100,000 jobs. The Japanese companies are making long-term commitments where United States business leaders had seemed to give up hope. The success of these ventures is the result of the sweeping revolution in the organization of technology, work, and production that lies at the heart of the Japanese model of production. This book explores the rise of this Japanese model and provides a detailed examination of the processes which have brought about its transfer to the United States. It presents new and original data on the extent of Japanese investment in both United States heavy industry and high technology and provides an an empirically-grounded discussion of the reasons why this has occurred. The authors focus on the transfer of basic elements of Japanese production organization and develop a broad conceptual theme contrasting the Japanese model of production organization with that of United States Fordism. With a wealth of illustrations and straightforward examples, this work will appeal to those interested in urban and regional economics, industrial organization, labor relations, and economic geography.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A106624. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: When a Decision Maker is asked to provide his or her preferences, the response represents a snapshot in time. While their preference structure elicited at any given moment may represent their revealed preferences at that point in time, it may change over time. These changing preferences over time represent ambiguity in the decision maker's preferences. Other sources of ambiguity may exist. One weakness of many decision analysis techniques today is the inability to incorporate ambiguity into the basic decision model. The existence of the problem has been known and commented on for many years. This research addresses that problem. It begins with the basic approach and methodology developed by Ralph Keeney, Value-Focused Thinking (VFT). This methodology is then expanded to allow decision makers to specify not just constant weights to demonstrate their preferences, but an entire distribution. These distributions are then incorporated with the value of the attributes and the whole is simulated using Monte Carlo Simulation provided by Crystal Ball. The result of incorporating these weight distributions into the model, is an empirical distribution for the value of an alternative. The alternative distributions can be compared in a number of ways to provide insight to the decision maker.

3 out of 5 stars It does the job.......2004-11-26

But that's it. Hardly a good reference book, scarcely good for a text book, it's not well explained, not fully organized, and wastes too much paper on too little. Quite frankly, I recommend to look for more options before buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars Elemental , my dear Treybal!.......2004-11-24

This book is a milestone in which Mass Transfer Operations concerns.
Extremely well written and better designed with clever diagrams and illustrative examples it will be hard for you to find another text in the road like this one .
Fundamental for Industrial and Chemical Engineers .

1 out of 5 stars Lots of breadth, but extremely poorly written.......2002-01-02

The good part is that the book covers a wide range of topics in the area of mass transfer. The pity is that the author nearly always has assumed that the person has had instructions in the subject before approaching the topic. In the interest of being pithy, the logic behind the phase diagrams and equations is severly lacking in several chapters. Bottom line: it is good book if you are a practicing chemical engineer who is already familiar with the subject, but pathetic as an introductory text. Stay away unless it is forced on you by the class instructor.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book for Mass Transfer.......2000-05-09

I had used this book during my undergrad in India, and still refer to it 3 years after having graduated. Operations well classified for a clearer grasp of the subject - 1. Diffusion 2. Gas-Liquid Operations 3. Liquid-Liquid operations 4. Solid-Fluid operations

Very lucid and detailed. Solved examples well explained for a fantastic understanding. I strongly recommed this book for Mass Transfer.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A975473. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis probes the performance of one-channel time-reversal acoustics in a chamber in terms of the geometry of the cavity. In particular, a rectangular chamber is compared to an enclosure that has a stadium shape. The mode structure in the rectangular cavity is highly symmetric, while it is highly irregular in the stadium-shaped cavity. Time- reversal acoustic techniques produce an improved focus in the latter. The focusing quality is determined as a function of frequency, time-reversal window size, and spatial extent. A scheme for encrypted acoustic communication, both in air and underwater, that uses multiple broadband signals with identical bandwidth, Hanning window source spectra, and center frequencies separated by half the bandwidth, allowing for null detection between adjacent signals, is successfully investigated.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research develops an adaptive controller that actively suppresses a single frequency disturbance source at a remote position and tests the system on the NPS Space Truss. The experimental results are then compared to those predicted by an ANSYS finite element model. The NPS space truss is a 3.7- meter long truss that simulates a space-borne appendage with sensitive equipment mounted at its extremities. One of two installed piezoelectric actuators and an Adaptive Multi-Layer LMS control law were used to effectively eliminate an axial component of the vibrations induced by a linear proof mass actuator mounted at one end of the truss. Experimental and analytical results both demonstrate reductions to the level of system noise. Vibration reductions in excess of 50dB were obtained through experimentation and over 100dB using ANSYS, demonstrating the ability to model this system with a finite element model. This report also proposes a method to use distributed quartz accelerometers to evaluate the location, direction, and energy of impacts on the NPS space truss using the DSPACE data acquisition and processing system to capture the structural response and compare it to known reference Signals.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis analyzes factors that influence an officer's decision to separate from the Army, after his or her initial obligation, and prior to completing 11 years of service on active duty. Data utilized in this thesis were obtained from the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) Master and Loss Files. Empirical logit models were estimated for officers who entered the Army as an 0- 1 in 1977, 1980, and 1983. The study also looks exclusively at officers from the three major sources of commission: U.S. Military Academy, Reserve Officers Training Corps, and Officer Candidate School. The results show that the most statistically significant factors affecting an officer's separation decision are the officer's education level and Military Occupational Specialty. The overall results also suggest that female and minority officers had an increased likelihood of leaving the Army during the military drawdown. Recommendations for further study are included.

5 out of 5 stars Great Anthology of Akkadian Literature.......2004-09-23

This is a great anthology of Akkadian literature. It may be one of the best English translations of Akkadian literature of this magnitude. It contains the lost poetry and prose of ancient Assyria and Babylonia. There are over 300 works in this volume, including some of the world's oldest literature. Please note that there are two volumes. The first volume contains introductions to Akkadian literature, language, poetry, and prose. It also contains specific eras such as the Archaic Period (2300-2000 B.C.), the Classical Period (2000-1500 B.C.), and the Mature Period (1500-1000 B.C.). The second volume contains hymns, prayers, and the Akkadian literature of the Late Period (1000-100 B.C.).

Another book I would recommend if you like this one is S.N. Kramer's Sumerian Mythology. It is part of the series "Memoirs of The American Philosophical Society from Independence Square, Philadelphia 1944.
