This is a pretty good basic program for beginning cursive writing. It uses simple cues for kids who might need a multi sensory approach to learning this skill. I wish it had better practice sheets and examples though.

5 out of 5 stars Loops and Other Groups.......2000-03-31

This method has been my instant cure for students with disabilities. These student usually dislike cursive handwriting, but with this method they enjoy and excel in the area of handwriting.

    Book Description

Loop groups are the simplest class of infinite dimensional Lie groups, and have important applications in elementary particle physics. They have recently been studied intensively, and the theory is now well developed, involving ideas from several areas of mathematics - algebra, geometry, analysis, and combinatorics. The mathematics of quantum field theory is an important ingredient. This book gives a complete and self-contained account of what is known about the subject and it is written from a geometrical and analytical point of view, with quantum field theory very much in mind. The mathematics used in connection with loop groups is interesting and important beyond its immediate applications and the authors have tried to make the book accessible to mathematicians in many fields. The hardback edition was published in December 1986.

      Book Description

This is an accessible introduction to some of the fundamental connections among differential geometry, Lie groups, and integrable Hamiltonian systems. The text demonstrates how the theory of loop groups can be used to study harmonic maps. By concentrating on the main ideas and examples, the author leads up to topics of current research. The book is suitable for students who are beginning to study manifolds and Lie groups, and should be of interest both to mathematicians and to theoretical physicists as well.

1 out of 5 stars Not one of the best from McMurtry .......2007-02-12

'Loop Group' does not measure up to Larry McMurtry's previous works in style and contents. Its central character, Maggie Clary, is a long way from equaling the irrespressibly funny and endearing Aurora Greenway in Terms of Endearment. The setting of the story (Hollywood) is colorful, yet the road trip from California to Texas is mostly unremarkable, except perhaps for two brief encounters with nutty hichhikers.

Maggie could be described as 'interesting' at best, and would have enjoyed much more fictional possibilities had she had not been undermined by an unsympathetic supporting cast of characters.

Connie, like her best friend, is a 60 year-old spunky amazon who despite her loyalty to Maggie, has an quirky personality that is often bitchy, whiny, and whimsical. Maggie's three daughters, while appearing to be concerned about their mother's depressed state of mind, are in reality selfishly wrapped up in their own shallow pursuits to escape their personal insufficiencies. The members of Primary Loops, Maggie's looping* company, comprises a bunch of drug addicts and other marginal oddballs who fall short of their fictional potential.

The supposedly cathartic roadtrip that Maggie undertakes with Connie across the American Southwest has nothing really engaging in it that you could expect after McMurtry's other novels. It takes place well halfway into the novel and at its culmination, we meet Aunt Cooney, Maggie's 90 year-old aunt, who seems at the outset to be eccentric and generous, but in the end shows her true side as an immensely bitter woman.

The story line takes us from one unlikable character to the next, to draw an uninteresting sketch full of loose ends and irrelevant details. The dialog is awash with vulgarity and the book ends as as it began, with total lack of meaning.

*looping (definition from the Movie Database): The re-recording of dialogue by actors in a sound studio during post-production, usually performed to playback of edited picture in order to match lip movements on screen. It is frequently used to replace production track of poor quality (e.g., due to high levels of background noise) or to change the delivery or inflection of a line. Looping can also be used to insert new lines of dialogue which are conceived during editing, although such lines can only be placed against picture in which the face of the actor speaking is not visible.

I think McMurtry should stay out of Hollywood and stick with Texas! It's an interesting aspect of Hollywood life, the loop groups, and I cared enough about the characters to want to finish the book, but I would not buy another McMurty on Hollywood!

1 out of 5 stars Can someone say quota?.......2006-04-23

Ok,as a Larry McMurtry fan, I just got done with his trilogy about Thalia. Wonderful stories. Of course I read Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment, and all of his classics.

This book sucked. First of all, it was weirdly sexual, pointless, and the themes were just a bad copy of the good books he's written. This is the worst book he has ever written, and no one should read it. It was just a pointless story that was obviously his last book he needed to fill his quota to his publisher.

1 out of 5 stars I have an excuse for finishing this book..........2006-02-27

...I was stuck on a long international flight with a flight magazine that hadn't been changed since my flight out, a movie I'd already seen (twice), and a dead battery on my mp3 player.
Otherwise, after the first chapter I'd have used it to wipe down the basin as a courtesy to the next passenger, then watched it disappear in a rush of blue water.

I don't know who these people who write the cover blurbs are, but I suspect that the publisher knows some very embarrassing secrets about them. And I know for sure that the reviewer who had the nerve to say this is McMurtry's best book since "Terms of Endearment" has never read that book, though he may have seen the pale shadow of a (critically acclaimed -hello-) movie that was made from it.

I'm thinkin' that Larry is dead and whomever found the body put together this book from the gleanings of his old notebooks and wastebasket contents.
Because that's what it seems like - a collection of vague ideas, impotent plot outlines, and blurry sketches of characters either too similar to ones used in previous novels (the chicken farmer aunt, for instance, is archetypical of McMurtry's crazy-like-foxes old codger Texans), or characters not fully fleshed out. The protagonist Maggie herself, never does get colored all the way in, so that you end the book with a "yeah, so?" feeling. You don't know or care any more about her by the last sentence than you did in the first. Too, the text is afflicted with cliche and overused adjectives. "Vast" is a favorite- it describes everything from pots of pasta to areas of desert. And there are many little inconsistences of the type that make me wonder if the editors were illiterate or apathetic. Probably both.

"Loop Group" is a huge disappointment. Please, if you want to read a McMurty book, try another: "All My Friends are Going to Be Strangers," "Lonesome Dove," or "Anything for Billy", or any of the other westerns. Perhaps "Terms of Endearment." Those are books that can change your life just because they make you know things you didn't know before.

Maybe the existence of this book is a perfect example of why creativity can't be motivated by contract obligations.

        Book Description

Automatic transformation of a sequential program into a parallel form is a subject that presents a great intellectual challenge and promises great practical rewards. There is a tremendous investment in existing sequential programs, and scientists and engineers continue to write their application programs in sequential languages (primarily in Fortran),but the demand for increasing speed is constant. The job of a restructuring compiler is to discover the dependence structure of a given program and transform the program in a way that is consistent with both that dependence structure and the characteristics of the given machine. Much attention in this field of research has been focused on the Fortran do loop. This is where one expects to find major chunks of computation that need to be performed repeatedly for different values of the index variable. Many loop transformations have been designed over the years, and several of them can be found in any parallelizing compiler currently in use in industry or at a university research facility. Loop Transformations for Restructuring Compilers: The Foundations provides a rigorous theory of loop transformations. The transformations are developed in a consistent mathematical framework using objects like directed graphs, matrices and linear equations. The algorithms that implement the transformations can then be precisely described in terms of certain abstract mathematical algorithms. The book provides the general mathematical background needed for loop transformations (including those basic mathematical algorithms), discusses data dependence, and introduces the major transformations. The next volume will build a detailed theory of loop transformations based on the material developed here. Loop Transformations for Restructuring Compilers: The Foundations presents a theory of loop transformations that is rigorous and yet reader-friendly.

From the reviews of Vols. I-III:

"Since their publication in 1986 J-P. Serre's Collected Papers have already become one of the classical references in mathematical research. This is on the one hand due to the completeness of the collection (132 items) and on the other, of course, due to the beautiful and clear expositions of Serre's papers and their influence on mathematics.

As listed in the preface, the three volumes cover almost all articles published in mathematical journals between 1949 and 1984, the summaries of the author's courses at the Collège de France since 1956, some of his Séminaire notes, and some items not previously published. [...]

The author's notes at the end of each volume giving corrections and important recent progress as well as improvements of the main results represent a highlight of this collection. The mathematical community definitely looks forward to further volume(s) of Serre's outstanding work."

            Book Description

This textbook is designed to give graduate students an understanding of integrable systems via the study of Riemann surfaces, loop groups, and twistors. The book has its origins in a series of lecture courses given by the authors, all of whom are internationally known mathematicians and renowned expositors. It is written in an accessible and informal style, and fills a gap in the existing literature. The introduction by Nigel Hitchin addresses the meaning of integrability: how do we recognize an integrable system? His own contribution then develops connections with algebraic geometry, and includes an introduction to Riemann surfaces, sheaves, and line bundles. Graeme Segal takes the Kortewegde Vries and nonlinear Schrodinger equations as central examples, and explores the mathematical structures underlying the inverse scattering transform. He explains the roles of loop groups, the Grassmannian, and algebraic curves. In the final part of the book, Richard Ward explores the connection between integrability and the self-dual Yang-Mills equations, and describes the correspondence between solutions to integrable equations and holomorphic vector bundles over twistor space.

              Book Description

For the past ten years, alternative loop rings have intrigued mathematicians from a wide cross-section of modern algebra. As a consequence, the theory of alternative loop rings has grown tremendously.

One of the main developments is the complete characterization of loops which have an alternative but not associative, loop ring. Furthermore, there is a very close relationship between the algebraic structures of loop rings and of group rings over 2-groups.

Another major topic of research is the study of the unit loop of the integral loop ring. Here the interaction between loop rings and group rings is of immense interest.

This is the first survey of the theory of alternative loop rings and related issues. Due to the strong interaction between loop rings and certain group rings, many results on group rings have been included, some of which are published for the first time. The authors often provide a new viewpoint and novel, elementary proofs in cases where results are already known.

The authors assume only that the reader is familiar with basic ring-theoretic and group-theoretic concepts. They present a work which is very much self-contained. It is thus a valuable reference to the student as well as the research mathematician. An extensive bibliography of references which are either directly relevant to the text or which offer supplementary material of interest, are also included.

                Book Description

This book presents the analytic-bilinear approach to integrable hierarchies, which gives a consistent and technically simple description of integrable hierarchies, and shows an easy and direct way to understand rather complicated structures, using mostly standard complex analysis. The language of the analytic-bilinear approach is suitable for applications to integrable nonlinear PDEs, integrable nonlinear discrete equations, and for the applications of integrable systems to continuous and discrete geometry. This approach allows the representation of generalised hierarchies of integrable equations in a condensed form of finite functional equations, incorporating basic hierarchy, modified hierarchy, singularity manifold equation hierarchy and corresponding linear problems, which arise both in the compact discrete form and in the form of nonlinear partial differential equations. Different levels of generalised hierarchy are connected via invariants of Combescure symmetry transformation. The resolution of functional equations also leads to the tau-function and its additional formulae. Audience: This book will be of interest to students and specialists whose work involves the theory of integrable systems, mathematical physics, topological groups, Lie groups, finite differences, functional equations, partial differential equations and functions of a complex variable.

                    Book Description

Creative writers and critics come together in this major collection of writings about the literature of the Dutch-, English-, French-, and Spanish-speaking Caribbean. It began with the thought that a distinction might be made between a principally anglophone "Sisyphus," representing the task of material, metaphysical, and cultural liberation as a basically pessimistic work of "success" and "achievement," and a francophone and hispanophone "Eldorado," expressed especially in magical realism, as a hope of surpassing material and local familiarities and moving into an altogether different cultural and spiritual dialectic.

As its authors worked together and separately, the divisive assumptions of this double theme became clearer even as it offered new ways to set them in mutual conjunction. All Caribbean writing shares and explores what both these names represent. At the same time, their juxtaposition does offer a fruitful way to explore Caribbean culture(s) as a unity with its own distinctive characteristics. Thus this collection discusses works of individual writers as well as wider issues of personal and political identity, of literary and cultural creation in neo- or post-colonial situations, of the meaning of creolity and creolization, of the nature of Caribbean cultural unity, and of how literatures "write back" against others who try to make them in their image.

Among the writers considered are Robert Antoni, Erna Brodber, Alejo Carpentier, Aime Cesaire, Wilson Harris, Albert Helman, C. L. R. James, George Lamming, Boeli van Leeuwen, Saint-John Perse, Simon Schwarz-Bart, Derek Walcott, and others.

Contributors to the volume include Gerard Aching, A. James Arnold, Antonio Benitez-Rojo, Erna Brodber, John Chioles, Rhonda Cobham, Maryse Condé, Joan Dayan, Wilson Harris, the late André Lefevere, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Ineke Phaf, Timothy Reiss, Silvio Torres-Saillant, and Sylvia Wynter.
