Too Little information.......2005-12-03
We are a SolidWorks and Pro/E engineering heavy equipment company located in Ohio. I have a strong Pro/E background with a Mechanical Engineering degree, and I am trying to learn SolidWorks. SolidWorks seems like a great design tool for many applications.
I picked up a used copy of this book, "Introducation to Solid Modeling Using SolidWorks". I was very disappointed in the lack of functional information in the areas of: general features, creating Drawings, implementing Mates and Relations and generating Assemblies. The book is poorly written and I would not recommend it to anyone, at any level looking to learn SolidWorks. In the last review, it was written, "Howard deliberately does not explain all the methods in SolidWorks. To minimize information overload on you." I wish he provided more information and let me be the one to decide on information overload!
get started quickly on modelling.......2005-08-08
Autocad is the dominant CAD package, in market share and mindshare. But Howard shows that SolidWorks is perfectly capable of doing much the same tasks as Autocad. The modelling is intuitive. And much thought has clearly gone into the deployment of the user interface. The numerous options available to you should not prove overwhelming. Though perhaps that might be the initial impression, as you start the book.
Howard deliberately does not explain all the methods in SolidWorks. To minimise information overload on you. SolidWorks can certainly do far more. But here you can swiftly learn the most common methods and start designing.

Book Description
This systematic introduction into the use of SolidWorks® 2004 delivers all the information necessary for users to become proficient in designing parts, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings. The book and DVD work in conjunction to help users ?see and do? their way to new solid modeling skills using the most current release of the software. Early units demonstrate how to construct three-dimensional models of designs, piece parts, and assemblies. From these models, users will learn to produce detailed engineering drawings that are fully annotated with notes and standard dimensioning practices. Learners will later become skilled at producing free-hand sketches of piece parts from both principal orthographic and isometric views of the object. Finally, users will create a self-directed or course-defined project consisting of the assembly as a solid model, the assembly drawings, and detailed drawings fully dimensioned and annotated as required for fabrication.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, DVD is handy.......2004-11-08
The book is good, but the DVD tends to be more useful when looking for options and tools. The DVD must be played with the supplied player on the DVD, and this may be hard to find if you don't look for it and the autorun does not load. Normal DVD programs cannot play the DVD content of the disk.
Solid Work.......2004-10-30
Not the best text book I've used.
DVD does not appear to work, having tried three different working DVD drives and players. Package seal (probably illegally) says once broken that you foreit all return rights.
The book is based around tutorials, a lot of space is devoted to listing what you will be doing and the "course" structure. Once past the initial, and confusing parts, the rather basic illustrations do give you a reasonably structured introduction to using the application, and solid modelling.
Perhaps OK for students, but does seem rather expensive, considering the DVD apparently does not work in the UK.

I read the book " Introduction to solid modelling" & I liked it because it gives a first hand exposure to solid modelling to the engineering professionals who are on the brink of trying to understand solid modelling & its uses in their respective area of applications. It also helps the "C" savvy engineering application developers to understand the intricacies in developing a cad package using solid modelling techniques.

Book Description
Geared toward in an introductory course in solid modeling, Introduction to Solid Modeling Using SolidWorks by Edward Howard and Joseph Musto, of East Carolina University and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, respectively, teaches solid modeling using SolidWorks. The text presents solid modeling not just as a communication tool, but as an integral part of the design process. To this end the book explores design intent, the use of solid models in engineering analysis, and introduces techniques from manufacturing such as mold design and sheet metal patterning.
Howard and Musto provide a student-friendly presentation filled with easy-to-use tutorials. Their approach is also designed to help students understand how engineering is used in the real world. For instance, modeling exercises are largely centered on examples drawn from industrial applications. As well, "Future Study" boxes introduce students to different topics they will study in their engineering programs.

Book Description
Jhordan was only a boy when he witnessed his mother's suicide. At first, the pain of his loss weighed on him, but the pain soon festered into a deep-seated mistrust of women. Failed relationships abound, and now his marriage to Kelli has brought him to a crossroad. His cold heart may finally chase Kelli into the arms of another man.
Customer Reviews:
must read .......2007-09-24
This book is very good. It keeps your mind wondering what's going to happen next, so you have to make yourself stop and start later.I felt like I was in the book. Great book!!!! Glad I bought it!!!!
Forgiveness is the rule, not the exception.......2006-04-03
Anything worth having is worth fighting for, but how hard is it supposed to be? Kelli Adams knew that marrying Jhordan, the love of her life, wouldn't always be perfect, but she never expected to be completely rejected after less than a year of marriage. Surely, a wife could expect love and affection from her husband on the regular. Crossing Jhordan's River is more than Christian fiction, or romantic fiction, or chick lit, or all the other labels we may try to put on it. It's a story that could be about any one of us, trying to live with the choices we've made without beating ourselves up over things we can't change. Jhordan and Kelli learn lessons of forgiveness in different ways. Jhordan let his past take center stage in his present. Kelli, not knowing Jhordan's motivation for doing so, allowed herself to become enamored of a man while she was at her weakest point: trying to make her husband love her completely again. Jhordan's "river of guilt" became a chasm of distrust in their marriage. As unfair as it was to Kelli, Jhordan held his love for her hostage in an effort to protect his heart. Kelli, on the other hand, seemed to hurriedly jump ship toward another man, despite warnings from friends and family. The passion, the strength, the pain, and the love could be felt on every page. Wonderful job, Kendra!
Absolutely Beautiful.......2006-04-01
This book was beautifully written. I fell in love with all of the characters and I truly enjoyed it. My heart went out to Jhordan and all that he went through. Kelli and Jhordan were truly amazing and had alot of obstacles against them.
Keep up the good work.
Crossing Jordan's River.......2006-03-16

Crossing Jhordan.......2006-03-16
I was one of the best love stories I ever read, I'm married and this story really touches home with any married person. A must read for anyone......
Book Description
To some of us, the American Revolution might be little more than a dusty old piece of American history. But what would our lives -- our country and world -- be like if the American Revolution had ended practically before it had even begun?
The Revolution did seem nearly over in the harsh winter of 1776. The Continental Army, led by General George Washington, had suffered many defeats and had made many retreats. Now the soldiers found themselves encamped on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River, across from three Hessian regiments occupying the town of Trenton, New Jersey. Tired, cold, ill-clothed, and ill-equipped to fight, most of them were ready to go home when their enlistments were up. Only decisive action could possibly win General Washington a battle -- and save the Revolution.
A variety of voices in a variety of forms -- a present-day narrator, the letters of a fictional soldier, and true accounts from the time -- are brought together with period images and Walter Lyon Krudop's dramatic art to make vivid the critical moments of Washington's crossing of the Delaware. Readers cannot help but come away with a new appreciation of what the Battle of Trenton means for us today.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for children & adults!.......2004-12-20
This beautifully illustrated book is a great history teacher. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Excellent reader appeal- Beautifully written and illustrated.......1998-10-03
Louise Peacock's first book is a tribute to her excellent work as a historian. Although written for children 9-12, it is a book that that will appeal to all ages. She has a rare talent for writing a simple story that evokes the reader to find depth and insight. Her unique approach of blending three story lines allows the reader to experience the Battle of Trenton from a wide range of perspectives. Truly a work of art, this book comes highly recommended.

Book Description
Crossing the River presents a wide range of Nguyen Huy Thiep's short fiction, both realistic stories in contemporary settings and retellings of folk myths that serve as contemporary parables. When Thiep's stories first appeared in the 1980s, they set off a chain of debate, not only within intellectual and political circles, but also within the society at large. Typically, the struggles of his characters were about survival, not survival in the context of war or revolution, but survival in the context of the emotional and psychological strength it takes to live within the harsh confines of post-war Vietnamese society. Thiep captured the emotional quality of Vietnamese life in a way no other author had done, and his importance can be recognized today by his enormous influence on younger writers.
Nguyen Huy Thiep, who was born in Hanoi in 1950, spent much of his youth in rural Vietnam where his mother worked as an agricultural laborer. By 1987, he began to be published in the major literary journals in Vietnam, and in 1988, more than 20 of his stories were published. He is widely considered Vietnam's finest short story writer.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent writer, undermined by some poor translation and poor editing.......2007-09-22
Nguyen Huy Thiep is a well known writer in Vietnam, remarkable for the way that his stories present the cruelties of man to each other (and themselves) and yet were widely circulated and popular. This collection from Curbstone Press collects together a wide range of stories that are translated by such writers as Linh Dinh and Dana Sachs. I first came across Nguyen Huy Thiep in the intriguing collection of Vietnamese fiction, Night, Again. The story in there, "Without a King," is the story of a woman marrying into a family that is both cruel and loving, with a myriad of inner struggles and rivalries, including a brother who has an eye for the woman brought into their home.
Many of Nguyen's stories are equally complex and wonderfully dark, examining the depth of their characters and allowing them to have their spiritual realizations and their moments of outrageous inconsideration and violence. Nguyen's writing is almost journalistic at times, with narrators who report the events of the stories, giving them an almost chilling verisimilitude. Another powerful story here is "The General Retires," the story of an old soldier who comes home only to face further wars there, only of a psychological kind. One of my favorite stories in here was "Rain," a rather short piece that examines love and separation.
While I found myself quite impressed by Nguyen's talent, I also found myself rather put off by the sloppiness of the collection and some of the translations. Aside from finding occasional gross grammatical errors ('lightening' instead of 'lightning,' for example), but the separations between stories were sometimes quite bare, with a mere translator's note crammed into the bottom margin. Translations by Linh Dinh and Brigit Hussfeld conveyed a highly competent writer with a tight hold on his craft and form, while others felt loose in a way that I would chalk up more to poor translators than Nguyen. The commentaries, including the sophomoric comparison of Nguyen to Dostoevsky and Faulkner on the back cover, are all rather bland. I gained for more respect for Nguyen as a writer from the competently translated stories themselves rather than the editorial package, which offered little of interest on this writer I would like to know more about.
Excellent group of universal stories.......2007-04-07
In the late 1980s, Vietnam was one of the poorest countries in the world. Combine post-war devastation with less-than-component running of the economy and the loss of a major source of aid, the Soviet Union, and the Vietnamese government started a process of renovation or "doi moi." The intention was to bring the economy more in line with market forces, but the government also eased its controls on Vietnamese literature. The author's stories created a huge sensation and open controversy with their depiction of a society full of individualism and greed. This was in great contrast to the proletarian, government-approved stories that had been published up until that time. Some of these tales take place in the present day, while others include famous figures from Vietnamese history. Even the historical stories are characterized by alienation and lack of patriotism.
This book is really good. These stories are about humanity, about people just trying to get through this thing called life. They are universal stories that could have been set anywhere in the world. It is very much worth reading, once the reader gets past the lack of familiarity with Vietnamese culture.
Captivating.......2005-01-29
Crossing the River is the largest collection of Nguyen Huy Thiep's literature available in an English translation. One word I would personally use to describe his work is lyrical, and yet another word would be stark. In fact he evokes a contradictory experience, which defies characterization. The stories seem simple, often depressing, and yet they have a grace and underlying imagery that is captivating.
A recurring theme explores the inadequacy of heroes and traditional beliefs. However, much of the imagery, surroundings, and events are steeped in Buddhist and Vietnamese moral philosophy and Vietnamese myth and history. In many ways, this juxtaposition of aware struggle and darkly humorous acceptance seems to be a quintessential feature of Vietnamese culture. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in literature or who wishes a glimpse inside modern Vietnamese imagery.

Hints of EJD's writing greatness.......2001-03-13
I purchased this hard-to-find book just to read one of the first ever publications of Eric Jerome Dickey. He wrote a short story called "Thirteen" and if you were to read it, you could see hints of his greatness and how powerful a writer this brother is. The biggest stand out in this piece is the character's voice (she reminded me of Inda in Sister, Sister). This teenaged girl is pregnant and concerned about her condition and why her boyfriend doesn't treat her right. EJD wrote with such conviction that you feel he is the character; through the effectiveness of his portrayl, you know this girl's mind, you can feel what she's feeling as she struggles with her emtoions and psychological challenges and for that alone, he must be commended. Great job!
Product Description
Voices in the Wind/Voces en el viento is a collaboration, a fully bilingual edition of contemporary poetry by Pulitzer Prize nominee James B. Allen and Chilean poet Carmen Aravena bound together in one volume. The poetry is exceptionally fine, and the translations are excellent in both Spanish and English. Poetic imagination in one language complements and enhances its counterpart in the other. The "voices in the wind", if you listen carefully, are generally familiar: those of parents, siblings, close friends. They probably speak the same language that you do. And they bring back emotionally charged memories of an intensely personal nature. These feelings of nostalgia, fear, admiration, friendship, etc. know no boundaries, no frontiers. They bridge the gap between people of diverse cultures and countries. The concrete situations which call them forth illustrate the universal human condition and make wonderful poetry in the telling. No matter what language you speak, poetry is an invaluable instrument for self-exploration and the definition of values, as you will discover within the pages of this book.--- from book's back cover
