Book Description

This book presents a set of essays on interfacial instability, essays on such topics as jets, solidification and melting, precipitation, and electrodeposition. The book deals with the linear theory; as a result, pencil and paper suffice to work through the material. The first two essays provide the necessary background: the first is an introduction to jets; the second explains how to solve a problem in interfacial instability, where the boundary separating two phases can be displaced.||The authors approach interfacial instabilities through their physical origins. These lie in the effect of surface displacements on gradients of pressure, temperature, and composition and on whether or not a perturbed gradient reinforces the displacement causing the perturbation. Intended for graduate students, the discussions are not mathematically demanding, but they do rely on an understanding of fluid flow, heat conduction, and diffusion.||Students will find that the book deepens their understanding of problems in which deflecting surfaces are important; instructors will find in the essays useful material to enrich their lectures.||Contents:|- Domain and Surface Perturbations|- Applications to the Stefan Problems|- Jets and Bridges|- Spinning Jets|- Rayleigh-Taylor and Saffman-Taylor Problems|- Solidification and Precipitation|- Electrodeposition

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best book in its area.......2003-06-16

It is the best book in the interfacial instability that covers many ideas and famous theories. It is good for graduate students. It contains a lot of research ideas which still of interest. I think the authors did a great job and they deserve a great respect.

5 out of 5 stars One of its kind.......2003-06-08

This book is an outstanding and accurate treatise on Interfacial Instability. I have never read any scientific book concerning hydro and fluid dynamic Instability like this book. It is a great book to look at and to learn from.

5 out of 5 stars A worth buy book.......2003-06-04

This book is an excellent book in interfacial instability. The problems presented are not new but they are still of great interest. The essays, i.e. the chapters, contain good explanations for some great works done by Lord Rayleigh,Chandrasekhar and others. This book is very useful for graduate students. It is worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy book for the careful reader.......2003-04-15

This book is written in a skillful manner and with pedagogy in mind. The authors have given explanations of the classical works of Rayleigh and other great physicists in ways that are better than the original papers themselves. I read many of the chapters (essays), deriving the intermediate results and like the authors applications of the Rayleigh work principle (as they call it) to a variety of problems. The second chapter on domain and surface perturbations, and the associated Appendix are the best I have seen anywhere and do what no other book has done thus far. The authors explain here how to write equations at distorted surfaces in terms of convenient reference surfaces and answer a lot of subtle questions in the process. The second chapter seems to be the basis for the entire book.

The energy arguments in the chapters on jets and Rayleigh Taylor are really nice. The chapters on rotating liquid bridges, solidification, precipitation, and electrodeposition contain a lot of new material. The subject matter is explained in physical terms with pictures and predictive calculations are then made that support the physical arguments. This book is great for intermediate graduate students and teachers who like to use a pen and a tablet. I have read several books on stability of fluid flow and this book is among the best. The book is best read in a research group and many interesting ideas will emanate. A worthy buy!

1 out of 5 stars Writing a book for the sake of writing a book?.......2003-01-30

This book reads as if the authors were trying to teach themselves interfacial instability. The problems are old worn-out, and the "essays" (each chapter, that is) are simply re-working of what is in the technical literature. The book does have some value, and should be useful to graduate students, but the authors could have chosen many problems of current interest with rich applications and pedagogical value. The topics chosen are fron classic papers (Lord Rayleigh, Saffman & Taylor, Chandrasekhar, etc.). Get Xerox copies of the original papers and save a bundle! The book is not worth the price (roughly $....)

From the author: We have experimentally investigated the coupling between interfacial instabilities and mechanical interlocking in polymeric films consisting of the incompatible polymer pair of polypropylene/high-density polyethylene and the compatible polymer pair of linear low-density polyethylene/high-density polyethylene. Our experimental results show that mechanical interlocking between the two phases can be achieved by controlling the extent of interfacial instabilities by properly selecting the initial disturbance frequency and amplitude as well as the layer depth ratio. Additionally, it has been shown that strength enhancement of the interface due to mechanical interlocking is directly proportional to the extent of wave bending in the processing apparatus. In fact, it has been demonstrated that in our test geometry maximum strength enhancement can be achieved at dimensionless wavenumbers near unity that correspond to disturbances with the largest growth rates. Overall, it has been shown that mechanical interlocking induced by a controlled amount of interfacial instabilities (i.e., based on knowledge of the stability of the interface and growth/decay rate of interfacial waves) can significantly increase the interfacial strength of two layer polymeric structures consisting of incompatible and compatible polymer pairs. Moreover, this effect is more pronounced in incompatible polymer pairs that possess negligible interfacial strength in absence of mechanical interlocking.

From the author: Non-isothermal calculation of flow history-dependent viscoelastic stresses in an annular coextrusion die is performed using the 8-mode modified Leonov constitutive equation and the deformation rate field from finite element simulations. The study shows how the recently proposed total normal stress difference (TNSD) sign criterion, which quantifies the relative stretching of coextruded layers across an interface, can be used to investigate the role of the die design and elongational viscosities of coextruded materials from the point of view of interfacial instability. It is shown that both the die geometry and the elongational strain hardening have a crucial effect on the interfacial wave instability.

                      Book Description

The diverse and controversial world of contemporary Milton studies is brought alive in this stimulating Companion. The volume is comprised of 30 fresh and powerful readings of Milton's texts and the contexts in which they were created, each written by a leading scholar. The contributions provoke debate and define problems, rather than offering false resolutions or bland overviews. The Companion is split into five sections looking at literary production and cultural ideologies, issues of politics, gender and religion, individual Milton texts, other relevant contemporary texts and responses to Milton over time. A whole chapter is devoted to each major poem and four to Paradise Lost. All the contributions convey the excitement of recent developments in the field, taking into account progress in early-modern historiography, new investigations into Milton's theology and the most up-to-date critical methodologies. The volume as a whole invites readers to explore and enjoy Milton's rich and fascinating work.

                        Book Description

A Concise Companion to Milton provides readers with essential guides to appreciating the works of John Milton, and to understanding the great influence they have had on literature. The book consists of twelve short, newly-commissioned chapters written by internationally respected scholars from Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Combining brevity, depth and accessibility, it is an ideal first critical work on Milton. The Companion opens with a series of essays explaining how and why Milton 's works established their central place in the English literary canon. The ensuing chapters follow Milton 's major works in chronological order, clarifying complex issues that are particularly relevant to our contemporary society. Book Description

This definitive Companion provides a critical overview of literary culture in the period from John Milton to William Blake. Its broad chronological range responds to recent reshapings of the canon and identifies new directions of study. Composed of 60 contributions from leading scholars in the field, its essays offer students a comprehensive and accessible survey of the field from a wide range of perspectives. It also, however, gives researchers and faculty the opportunity to update their acquaintance with new critical and scholarly work. The volume meets the needs of an intellectual world increasingly given over to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary study by covering philosophical, political, cultural and historical writing, as well as literary writing. Unlike other similar volumes, the main body of the Companion consists of readings of individual texts, both those commonly and less commonly studied.
