Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of my favourite fluid mechanics book.......2007-01-10

This book is an excellent text book on an advanced topic. But it does have some issues like any text book I saw. 1) quite a lot of editting errors; 2) Lack of detailed examples; 3) Some derivations are not complete; 4) Index notation not explained very well. However, it is still the best in its class IMO. Some other good books are by Currie and White. Currie's book is probably the easiest to understand. But neither covers as many important topics as this one. These three books together plus the one by Aris are a good combo to study this topic.

5 out of 5 stars very good service but ..........2006-11-10

The book store service is quick and good, but there are still errors in the book even through this is the third edition.

4 out of 5 stars Physicist's Review.......2006-11-06

Overall, not a bad text. Definitely written for engineers, though. Many of the equations are rewritten in different coordinate systems which I found unecessary. In addition, some results are just introduced as fact with much of the mathematical rigor used to derive them left out. The physical arguments and treatment of Exact Solutions to Navier-Stokes are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Well explained, thorough reference.......2005-10-06

The text makes a clear presentation of the material, both in terms of giving background on index notation, and on deriving the equations of fluid motion. Well written and very clear.

One main complaint is the lack of examples that are worked out for the reader. Especially for subject matter that rewards familiarity and repetition, this would be a helpful inclusion

1 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible Flow.......2004-03-13

This book presents a horrible introduction to graduate level fluid mechanics. Some faculties like to teach from this book because of a few well-written sections near the end of an otherwise disastrous attempt on the subject. Kundu or Currie present a much more comprehensive approach to introducing the wonderful subject of fluids and the different solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

      Book Description

The book presents the mathematical tools used to deal with problems related to slow rarefied flows, with particular attention to basic concepts and problems which arise in the study of micro- and nanomachines. The mathematical theory of slow flows is presented in a practically complete fashion and provides a rigorous justification for the use of the linearized Boltzmann equation, which avoids costly simulations based on Monte Carlo methods. The book surveys the theorems on validity and existence, with particular concern for flows close to equilibria, and discusses recent applications of rarefied lubrication theory to micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). It gives a general acquaintance of modern developments of rarefied gas dynamics in various regimes with particular attention to low speed microscale gas dynamics.

Senior students and graduates in applied mathematics, aerospace engineering, and mechanical mathematical physics will be provided with a basis for the study of molecular gas dynamics. The book will also be useful for scientific and technical researchers engaged in the research on gas flow in MEMS.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Micro and Nanoscale flows.......2005-12-02

I believe this is an excellent reference for anyone interested in the field of microfluidics and nanofluidics. When I got the first edition, I was always thinking that the addition of a few chapters on nanoscale fluid flows would make this book a comprehensive monograph for people who have background in conventional fluid mechanics and want to understand the micron and submicron fluid flows phenomena. The authors have done this in the new edition "current edition". It is a well-organized book that makes it easy for reader, especially for graduate students who want to start their research in MEMS and NEMS and for professors who are looking for a reference for their course. The book covers all aspects of micro and nanoflows in terms of their characteristics, scaling effects, and methodologies and approaches that can be used for modified continuum and molecular simulations.

5 out of 5 stars The Book on MicroFlows.......2002-06-07

I was fortunate enough to be given a chance to read the manuscript of this book about a year before it was published. I was looking for a source of general information on fluid issues in MEMS in order to acquaint myself with the subject. Even though many research papers are out there, the new reader to the field needs to be given a solid starting point. Being a well-written research monograph, this is that solid starting point for those who have a grasp of traditional fluid mechanics and want to enhance that understanding for research into MEMS devices and flows encountered at micron scale and below.
Now that the book is printed, I used it as the main source of reading for an Indep. Study course for a graduate student who started his PhD studies recently.
The book also provides a wealth of references that will assist the reader to get a deeper understanding of the specific subject.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Microflows.......2002-02-12

This is an excellent book and I recommend this to any one interested in microfluidics, MEMS or nanotechnology. To my knowledge, this is the first book on microfluidics. The chapters on gas flows, electrokinetically driven liquid flows and on numerical methods for continuum and atomistic simulation are very interesting.

The Literature of the American South spans four centuries, from the early 1600s to contemporary times, bringing together the work of nearly 90 American writers. Even if that were all it contained, this anthology would be welcome. But what makes The Literature of the American South especially noteworthy is the juxtaposition of black and white writers, whose texts make clear both divisions and commonalities, and places the literary history of the region in a new light. Excerpts from Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia are followed by black surveyor and inventor Benjamin Banneker's letter to Jefferson, which points out the contradiction between Jefferson owning slaves and the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. Also included is an illuminating counterpoint between the excerpt from former slave Harriet Ann Jacobs's autobiography, and the diary of plantation mistress Mary Boykin Chesnut. In addition, the volume contains material by such stalwarts as Zora Neale Hurston, Jean Toomer, Sterling A. Brown, and Richard Wright.

                  Book Description

For nearly four centuries, the American South has been home to a vital literary tradition. The Literature of the American South reconsiders southern writing from its seventeenth-century origins to its flourishing present. Featuring the works of eighty-seven classic, contemporary, and newly recovered writers of all genres—poetry, short fiction, drama, novels, autobiography, criticism, sermons, memoirs, journals, and letters—this groundbreaking anthology sheds new light on the creative power of the southern imagination. This Norton anthology represents major authors in the tradition—Poe, Douglass, Clemens, Ransom, Toomer, Faulkner, Penn Warren, Hellman, Welty, Williams, Jarrell, McCullers, Dickey, and O'Connor. In addition, the current, thriving state of southern literature is presented in the anthology's largest section, "The Contemporary South: 1940-Present," with works by Dorothy Allison, Lee Smith, Yusef Komunyakaa, Randall Kenan, and Henry Louis Gates Jr., among many others. The Literature of the American South opens up the concept of "southern literature" across lines of color, gender, and class, embracing both urban and agrarian cultures and bringing into the classroom the ongoing dialogues and debates over crucial questions such as southern identity, racial justice, the image of southern womanhood, and the role of art in society. "Vernacular Traditions," Section Four of the anthology, prints a range of texts that makes clear the powerful presence and literary influence of singing, preaching, and storytelling—forms of expression among the most long-lived, adaptable, and vital of the vernacular traditions of the American South. Like other Norton anthologies, The Literature of the American South provides lively, informative period introductions, author headnotes, annotations that are explanatory not interpretive, and selected bibliographies.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the Rest!.......2007-01-15

This is an incredible conpendium of *great* Southern writing. The authors and their works are varied, and, unlike other anthologies I've perused, it is not buried under yards of historic (i.e. boring) documents, sermons, and the like. Even the CD is exceptional. I was very disappointed when I learned Norton no longer published this book, however, since I wanted to adopt it for a new class I was developing. I've not found a book I've liked as well since.
