Book Description
This book provides an introduction to the general principles of nuclear magnetic resonance and relaxation, concentrating on simple models and their application. It includes an introduction to the ideas and applications of nuclear magnetic resonance and emphasizes the concepts of relaxation and the time domain. Some relatively advanced topics are treated, but the approach is graduated and all points of potential difficulty are carefully explained. An introductory classical discussion of relaxation is followed by a quantum-mechanical treatment. A selection of case studies is considered in depth, providing applications of the ideas developed in the text. There are a number of appendixes, including one on random functions. This treatment of one of the most important experimental techniques in modern science will be of great value to final-year undergraduates, graduate students and researchers using nuclear magnetic resonance, particularly physicists, and especially those involved in the study of condensed matter physics.
Customer Reviews:
Like bells in my head.......2003-08-06
Let's not mince words here: this book is sublime. The tender words of Brian lifted me from my toes, and made me want to go outside for the first time. I could imagine him sitting, wearing sandals, writing this book just for me. I wear sandals now. I have grown a beard too.
His T1 and T2 times: they are my clothes and they support me, I am relaxed. Phase encoding, frequency encoding - they tell me where I am and where to be. Fourier transforms move me between domains of light and dark.
The perfection of this book almost moved me to change, and in a good way, not like last time. I stopped though. The last section is too short and makes me want more. I tried to tell the girl from next door, but she can't read yet. I tried to teach her but I did it too hard and now she won't breathe. Was this wrong? Tell me Brian.

This is the kind of book where you can smell and hear and see the fictional world the writer has created, so palpably does the atmosphere come through. Set on an island in the straits north of Puget Sound, in Washington, where everyone is either a fisherman or a berry farmer, the story is nominally about a murder trial. But since it's set in the 1950s, lingering memories of World War II, internment camps and racism helps fuel suspicion of a Japanese-American fisherman, a lifelong resident of the islands. It's a great story, but the primary pleasure of the book is Guterson's renderings of the people and the place.
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Ishmael Chambers, the one-man staff of the newspaper on San Piedro Island in Puget Sound, is covering the 1954 trial of a high school classmate accused of killing another classmate over a land dispute. Actor Peter Marinker--a stage veteran who has appeared in such movies as The Russia House and The Emerald Forest--takes us deep inside the world created by David Guterson in his award-winning 1994 novel. We learn the sensory details of life in a small fishing community; the emotional lives of people scarred inside and out by World War II; and the deep and unresolved prejudices toward the island's Japanese Americans, who were interned during the war--a tragedy that led to financial advantage for some islanders. Marinker deliberately but nimbly moves from the characters' distinctive voices to the poignant interior perspectives of the soulful, wounded Chambers as he tells a combination love story, murder mystery, and painful history lesson. (Running time: 15 hours, 10 cassettes) --Lou Schuler
Book Description
Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award
American Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award
San Piedro Island, north of Puget Sound, is a place so isolated that no one who lives there can afford to make enemies. But in 1954 a local fisherman is found suspiciously drowned, and a Japanese American named Kabuo Miyamoto is charged with his murder. In the course of the ensuing trial, it becomes clear that what is at stake is more than a man's guilt. For on San Pedro, memory grows as thickly as cedar trees and the fields of ripe strawberries--memories of a charmed love affair between a white boy and the Japanese girl who grew up to become Kabuo's wife; memories of land desired, paid for, and lost. Above all, San Piedro is haunted by the memory of what happened to its Japanese residents during World War II, when an entire community was sent into exile while its neighbors watched. Gripping, tragic, and densely atmospheric,
Snow Falling on Cedars is a masterpiece of suspense-- one that leaves us shaken and changed.
"Haunting.... A whodunit complete with courtroom maneuvering and surprising turns of evidence and at the same time a mystery, something altogether richer and deeper."--Los Angeles Times
"Compelling...heartstopping. Finely wrought, flawlessly written."--The New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
Very good (somewhat) historical novel.......2007-08-05
This is not a fast paced read but it is so rich with detail of the characters and the places of its time you can almost feel you're there. The descriptions of the island of San Piedro sent me looking for it on a map of the Puget Sound area only to find there is no such place. I wish Mr. Guterson had included a glossary for the fishing jargon and the colloquialisms of northwest Washington of that time; that would have made it even more interesting for me.
Also a good cultural study of the interactions of Caucasian and non-Caucasian Americans and how much war influences and divides us such as we are experiencing now.
Awesome book!.......2007-07-30
I bought this book for my daughter to read for an honors English class. I read it first and had forgotten that I had watched the movie years ago. I absolutely was saturated by the story. I would recommend it for anyone!
Suspenseful and descriptive novel.......2007-07-14
During the time of Japanese Internment and WWII Japanese settlers strive to live in dignity, finding comfort relying on their old Japanese traditions and customs which ultimately left one white man who courted a Japanese woman broken hearted and another white man who tried to sell and enter into a contract a piece of land to Japanese in a mysterious demise whose trial is the focus of the novel. In the end though truth, heroism and rule of law prevailed over racism and jealousy.
Exposing the Human Condition.......2007-06-25
At its bare bones level, the literary genre here is a murder mystery in which the reader learns of events essentially through witness testimony as it is given in a courtroom trial. And this aspect of the story is quite good and well-crafted, in and by itself. But at a deeper level, the backdrop of time and place reveals the deeply ingrained prejudices and suspicions that Americans felt and directed against Japanese-Americans who were living in the American northwest in the WWII years following Pearl Harbor. Very effectively and in a non-judgmental way, the author spotlights this chapter in America's history when completely innocent Japanese-Americans were forced from their homes, uprooted from occupations and earning capabilities, experienced painful alienation in relationships within their communities and ultimately were interned in camps until war's end. Woven throughout, the human condition of bigotry is nakedly exposed but thankfully so are honor, grace and integrity.
well-written, poetic.......2007-06-05
Sensitive and well-written story that grips the reader. The descriptive passages and the character development are splendid. This novel works on so many levels: love story, mystery, courtroom drama, history. The book has a poetic feel that charms the reader.

Customer Reviews:
A useful, if somewhat annoying (to me) guide.......2006-11-01
There are some very good points about this guide, and one point that made me want to tear it in half; I will try to describe it so that the reader can make their own decision.
I think that Snow Falling on Cedars: A Novel was a so-so book. I found it uninvolving, and I cannot see why one would bother reading it when there are so many excellent non-fiction works on the themes. Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James Houston wrote a classic book on the internment called Farewell to Manzanar: A True Story of Japanese American Experience During and After the World War II Internment. Mary Matsuda Gruene wrote another book: Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese American Internment Camps, and she has a bibliography listing many other books about the Japanese-American experience. Matsuda, incidentally, came from a family of strawberry farmers living on an island in the Puget Sound. People interested in the lives of fisherfolk can read HUNGRY OCEAN, THE: A SWORDBOAT CAPTAIN'S JOURNEY, Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay, The Lives of Men, The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea (P.S.), etc.
Having warned of my basic lack of enthusiasm, the majority of the Cliff Notes is a competent and useful guide. One of the best parts of the guide is that Wasowski has provided lists explaining a variety of terms, including boating, fishing, contemporary slang, Japanese words, etc. I hope that the authors of some other guides will take a lesson.
I think that there are two missing themes. One is the position of women in the family. Some people will not find it odd that Carl and Kabuo feel little need to consult their wives when making decisions that affect their entire family, but some people today will find strange; it was much more common during the period when this is set than it is today. Guterson cannot really address that directly, but I think it would help if it were in this guide. The other issue, which neither the guide nor Guterson seem to recognize is that Etta does the same thing to her son, Carl, that she does to Kabuo: she deprives him of the opportunity to make his living on land his family owned. If Kabuo feels strongly about land that his family owned for seven years, how might Carl feel about land that has been in the family for several generations?
On the minus side is a vehement objection which I am certain many literary students will not understand. Wasowski commments the "Some question Guterson's style ... or else they think he just didn't succeed in what he attempted to do." He responds to the criticism: "Most readers tend to recognize that prejudice on either side of a relationship can lead to misunderstandings and that someone living with one foot in two different cultures is not fully part of either."
Since I often receive similar comments when I criticize "serious fiction", it is presumably necessary to point out that his response is a non sequitor, from the Latin "it does not follow", meaning "a statement (as a response) that does not follow logically from or is not clearly related to anything previously said." (Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged. Merriam-Webster, 2002, online, Oct 31, 2006).
Whether or not one likes Guterson's style does not necessarily have anything to do with whether or not one understands the pressures of conflicting loyalties. One could understand perfectly and still not like Guterson's book. Themes are different from writing techniques. Perhaps Wasowski means to say that Guterson's development of the theme is so good, so novel, and so important as to make wading through his verbosity worthwhile. I wouldn't agree, but that at least would make sense.
A useful companion to the book, if not a great example of clarity in writing.

Book Description
Including a facsimile of the complete shooting script--Academy Award-nominated director Scott Hicks (Shine) shares his vision transforming the bestselling novel into a seamless and profound masterpiece of a movie. Set in the Pacific Northwest a few years after the end of WWII, Snow Falling on Cedars is a powerful, lyrical meditation on the heartache--and consequences--of lost love. It tells the story of Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), a journalist reporting on the trial of a Japanese American accused of murdering a local fisherman. The trial forces the entire village to face the shame of sending their Japanese American neighbors to internment camps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and becomes the turning point for the honorable but wounded Hawke to free himself from his obsessive passion for his childhood love, the Japanese woman now married to the accused. Here is a deeply haunting mystery and a heartbreaking tale of passion, justice, and the accidents of nature which rule every corner of the universe. In the Newmarket Shooting Script Series format, here is the complete shooting script, an introduction by Hicks, notes and storyboards with his own drawings of scene renditions and camera angles, and a detailed interview revealing how he envisioned turning the acclaimed David Guterson novel into a movie. Illustrated with production stills and examples of several versions of poster art, the book is a must for all film students, fans, and lovers of the novel. The movie stars Ethan Hawke (Great Expectations, Reality Bites), James Cromwell (Babe), Richard Jenkins (There's Something about Mary), Youki Kudoh (Picture Bride), James Rebhorn (The Game), Sam Shepard (Safe Passage), newcomer Rick Yune, and Max Von Sydow (Hannah and Her Sisters). The producers are Kathleen Kennedy (E.T., The Color Purple), Frank Marshall (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Harry J. Ufland, and Ron Bass.
Customer Reviews:
Successful screen adaptation of a complex novel.......2000-04-25
Everyone will acknowledge that to adapt a novel for the screen always amounts to a difficult - and in many cases a downright impossible - undertaking. This is not any different with "Snow Falling on Cedars", a novel that is remarkable for its use of different time levels as well as an array of characters complex enough to scare off most scriptwriters. Given the difficulties Ron Bass and Scott Hicks must have faced while adapting the novel, I am all the more pleased with the result of their work. All in all it is fair to say that they have succeeded in writing a script that never runs the risk of cutting the novel's central thread and that pays attention to a great many of the book's intricate details. One drop of bitterness, however, is exactly the use of the aforementioned time levels - or "time frames", as Hicks calls them in his commentary that closes the script - as their complex arrangement both threatens the smooth evolving of the story and tends to confuse those readers not familiar with the novel. But then this may have to do more with the general problems associated with bringing a novel to the screen than with Bass' and Hicks' qualities as scriptwriters, and I would still recommend this script to anyone interested in getting to know more about the filming of "Snow Falling on Cedars" and about adapting a novel for the screen in general.

A considered and intelligent piece of writing.......2002-06-24
This is the third such guide to have been published about Guterson's novel - and easily the best. (It's a novel that I've taught since 1997.) It's not perfect but there is plenty of good material in here to get students thinking - Haytock is particularly eloqunent on Guterson's narrative technique. And she also provides the best novel/movie comparison that I've read so far.
