    Book Description

Why are propeller blades of speedboats strongly eroded? Why does a syringe have to be filled slowly in order to avoid the formation of a vapour cavity near the piston? Why does a pump for watering the garden not work efficiently if it is placed too high above the ground water level? These questions, and many others taken from day to day experience, refer to situations which apparently have no connection between them, except for the fact that the motion of a liquid in part of the system plays an essential role.

Cavitation science is that part of liquid physics which addresses the motion of liquids near -or beyond- the limit of vaporization. Generally, vaporization occurs if liquid velocities are large, causing pressure to decrease below a critical value at which the liquid continuum is broken at one or several points. Vapor cavities appear there and various unexpected effects follow for the system such as noise, lower performance, vibrations, wall erosion For a long time, it was believed that cavitation phenomena should be avoided entirely because of the generally negative character of their consequences. However, over the years it appeared that such a constraint could be costly, though not necessarily justified on scientific grounds. A limited development of cavitation - if carefully defined and controlled - can be allowed. This promotes the development of high speed hydrodynamics and hydraulics.

The present book is aimed at providing a comprehensive presentation of cavitation phenomena in liquid flows. It is further backed up by the experience, both experimental and theoretical, of the authors whose expertise has been internationally recognized. A special effort is made to place the various methods of investigation in strong relation with the fundamental physics of cavitation, enabling the reader to treat specific problems independently. Furthermore, it is hoped that a better knowledge of the cavitation phenomenon will allow engineers to create systems using it positively. Examples in the literature show the feasibility of this approach.

      5 out of 5 stars Dental Awakenings!.......2003-07-13

Thank goodness for this stand alone book! I work in a dental office and find conventional sources offer nothing but disinformation regarding the darker side of dentistry. "Beyond Amalgam" explores issues that most dentists blissfully ignore and dental associations actively suppress. But then, I guess that's to be expected. After all, we are in the business of selling a standardized 'happy smile' not revealing the connection between dental health and whole body health!

5 out of 5 stars the underlying truth behind the tooth.......2003-05-14

If you're happy with ADA misinformation, this book is not for you! If you believe drillin' and fillin' rightly belongs at the center of holistic dentistry, you may not enjoy this book quite as much as I did.

Mainstream dentistry won't be addressing the unpleasant truths tackled in Beyond Amalgam regarding jawbone "cavitation" and its effects on systemic health any time soon. So, if you do read this book you'll run the risk of winding up too far ahead of the curve. Your dentist may not even like you anymore!

This book is particularly dangerous to the health care professional--proceed with extreme caution! With this info you may find yourself even more persona non grata than those pesky critics of wholesale fluoridation!

Stockton's personal experience within this new dimension of dentistry and disease etiology and her straight forward style of reporting makes this book a jawbuster--it should be a Blockbuster. But, somehow, I don't think the powers that be are going to be very supportive, heheh.

        Book Description

This monograph treats the new and emerging subject of cavitation reaction engineering, specifically, designing the reactor which involves cavitation driven reaction process produced by the hydrodynamic, acoustic or laser forces. The monograph also illustrates the basic treatment of both physics and chemistry associated with the formation, growth and implosion of cavities and the resulting chemical reactions. While a substantial portion of the book reviews the existing literature on cavitation reaction engineering, it also presents some of the authors' views on how to treat the subject from the first principles and what future work is needed to expand knowledge in this area.
While cavitation reaction engineering is immediately applicable to water treatment processes, in the near future this process will be important for many applications in chemical, biochemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical and material industries. Apart from introducing the new and emerging subject of reaction engineering, the book illustrates how an introduction of cavitation process can have added value to many existing chemical, biological and catalytic reaction processes.
The book should be useful to any student, researcher or industrial designer who is interested in designing and scaling-up cavitation reactor.

        3 out of 5 stars A Fine Book.......2000-10-21

I'm not sure if I can say that this book is better than Leighton's "The Acoustic Bubble", but I personally have found it to be more enlightening on certain topics (of course Leighton spends some more time on aspects not covered here, so the books really do compliment each other). Although there is not a rigorous treatment of all the versions of the RP equation, the derivation of its basic form is quick and elegant, and you may begin studying complex bubble dynamics right from the start. The less than basic forms of the equation are then introduced with some background on what the new terms accomplish. The section on sonoluminescence is now somewhat dated, but much of it would still be of interest to a newcomer. This is not a textbook, ie, there are no problems to work. Basic knowledge of PDEs is required and knowledge of basic fluid dynamics preferable.

          Book Description

Power ultrasound has been used for many years in two specific industrial areas: cleaning and plastic welding. Over the last ten years an increasing interest has been shown in its potential for use over a much wider range of chemistry and processing which has been grouped together under the general title of sonochemistry. Most of these uses depend on the generation of acoustic cavitation in liquid media but this text, while underlining the importance of the physics and mathematics of cavitation, mainly concentrates on applications of the technology.

After an introduction to the topic and some historical background to the uses of power ultrasound the general principles of acoustic cavitation are explored including some background physics, bubble dynamics and factors which influence cavitation. The remainder of the book incorporates a series of applications of sonochemistry which illustrate the types of physical and chemical effects of ultrasonically induced cavitation which will interest chemists and engineers alike. Amongst the major topics included are chemical synthesis, environmental protection and remediation of water, sewage and soils, polymer synthesis and processing, electrochemistry including both analytical and synthetic aspects and plating. The final chapter reviews the range of ultrasonic equipment available in the laboratory and the progress made towards the scale-up of sonochemistry.

The level is introductory to semi-advanced and no topic has been taken to a particularly specialist level since it is intended that this should be of general interest to readers with a scientific background.

The story is very basic and dumb... A boy visits an island full of dinosaurs that he's scared of, yet mystified about... when a bunch of teenagers land on the islandto film a movie. The boy sgoes to "rescue" them under false pretensis, only to be enraged by there stupidty.
I highly erge you not to read this book. It was a waste of my hour (seeing as it's only shy of 100 pages...)

Thirteen-year-old Eric Kirby survived alone for eight weeks in Jurassic Park and became an instant celebrity, writing a book, appearing on TV, even testifying before the United Nations. Now, several months later, he's returning to Isla Sorna, which now hosts a protected, fortified research complex. Eric is disappointed to learn that he'll be spending his visit in the complex, just sitting around doing nothing. When five people parachute from their plane onto the island for an unknown reason, Eric fears they will be abandoned, as he himself was for so long. He sneaks out of the complex and sets out to rescue the parachutists, only to discover they are five reckless teenage filmmakers who intended to land on Isla Sorna all along. Can Eric convince them of their foolishness, or has he risked his life for nothing? I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoyed the first book in the Jurassic Park Adventures series.

friends with a young iguanadon he named Iggy and at the end of
the book he rescues Dr.Grant. It is continued by Jurassic Park 3 the Junior Novelization.

This isn't a very good adult book, but children with an intrest in dinosaurs or Jurassic Park will love it.

All thirteen-year-old Eric Kirby wanted was a chance to get to see real, live dinosaurs up close. So when his mom's boyfriend, Ben, offered him the opportunity, he jumped at the chance. Eric and Ben will get to parasail over the Jurassic Park Island, observing the dinosaurs from a safe distance. But something goes very wrong, and the two fall from the sky onto the island. Only Eric survives the fall, and he is trapped in a hostile prehistoric environment where he is the prey. It will take all of his wits and courage to stay alive until help arrives - but how can one kid survive among the deadliest predators ever to walk the earth? This was a thrilling story, not only for fans of the movies, but for readers who like adventure stories. The book ended with a cliffhanger that will lead into the new Jurassic Park movie, so now I have to wait until the movie comes out to find out what happens to Eric, which won't be for a whole month, or read the novelization. Still, this was an exciting, although short, book.

This is the first kids' book I've seen that makes an honest attempt to explain cladistics: that's a tall order in a book of only forty-eight pages, including front and back matter, especially when about half of the pages are taken up by pictures, and large print is used throughout.

You have to admire Dennis Shealy for making the attempt. In seven short chapters he skims over subjects like evolution, extinction, natural selection, Linnaean and cladistic classification and the dinosaurian ancestry of birds. Unfortunately, in covering so much material so cursorily, something has to give: and what gives is the definition of cladistics, which is described as grouping animals ``based just on traits they have in common'', without emphasising the importance of shared _derived_ characters. It's not exactly a fatal flaw in a book aimed at seven-year-olds, but it should have been easy enough to catch.

There are other minor oversights too: page 26 tells us that the bones of _Deinonychus_ and of modern birds share 22 common traits; then on page 30, that there are twenty-three shared traits.

Still, let's not be picky: this is fine attempt at teaching some complex stuff to kids, and it doesn't do a bad job. It's enhanced by Michael Skrepnick's characteristically fine illustrations: not just beautiful restorations, but helpful skeletal diagrams too, including a complete _Velociraptor_, a modern bird, and detail of their arms.

It's a good attempt at a very difficult book. The Jurassic Park institute is to commended for its ambition.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The details kept the book flowing easily and kept my interset. The way he wrote the book really made it hard to put it down. There was a lot of action and suspense in the novel that added to the feel of the book. I would say that the book is really close to another of the authors novels Jurassic Park. It was really similar but I would have to say that Jurassic Park was alittle better.

If you are planning to buy this book, please be aware that this is not a novel by Michael Crichton. Crichton wrote only two Jurassic Park books, Jurassic Park and The Lost World.

The Jurassic Park 3 Penguin reader serves as a companion to the movie for children of the ages of 9 to 12.

The movie was made without any input from Crichton.

3 out of 5 stars An okay book.......2001-06-26

This book didn't go into very much detail. I read it in a short amount of time. Since I'm 12 I didn't like it too much but it could make a good gift for a younger kid who likes dinosaurs. I would prefer the Jurassic Park III Junior Novelization or the Jurassic Park III Movie Storybook. Still, the pictures in this book were pretty cool.
