4 out of 5 stars a great book for those new to physics.......2002-09-29

As a college student, I always hoped for easy-to-understand textbooks every semester. This book met my expectations! It is taught from a non-calculus point of view...but those of us that know calculus will know how to deal with the myriad of equations that you encounter in physics.

Jones and Childers have put a great textbook together. The chapters are very easy to understand--concepts are explained thoroughly, and then supplemented with examples that are solved step by step and the results are discussed. The figures are drawn well--even things like relativity and quantum mechanics make more sense after reading this book!

To summarize--if this is the textbook for your class, you are in luck. Buy it...if you are interested in physics at all, you will enjoy the book. If you are looking for a book to help learn concepts in physics, and want a textbook, this one is for you too! Compared to all the other textbooks out there, this is one of the top two (Serway's book being the other).

5 out of 5 stars A Contemporary Review of "Contemporary College Physics".......2001-11-03

This book is very well written, due to the choices of sentences and words. The sentences are to the point and not like MANY physics books who dance around the topic. In addition to having carefully chosen examples that illustrates its point clearly.
The book also has nice illustrations printed on nice paper, unlike other EXPENSIVE books printed on "cheap" paper. The book includes all the topics other books would cover in two volumes and hence would cost significantly more. I highly recommend this text for anyone (including poor students like me)!! ;)

1 out of 5 stars This is an answer book only! This is not the textbook!.......1999-10-03

This book is advertised as something it is not. Do not order this book if you want the textbook! This book offers answers to the questions in the text ONLY!

4 out of 5 stars College Physics For You.......2002-03-01

I teach science and would prefer to write a review about a
calculus-based Physics text. Jone's Contemporary Physics text
only requires algebra/trig. I particularly like this book
because its enjoyable and would carry it around just for the
sake of reading enjoyment, what the authors have to say about
each topics, beginning from mechanics, relativity to nuclear
physics. The books requires algebra, but at times the author
would motivate you to look at something which requires calculus.
Dr Jones has done quite a research, he is very careful about
writing his book ...you can read something about Isaac Newton
as a real smart guy ever since the beginning. If you have other
college physics text, then buy this one as a reference.

          Probably not the best physics book out on the market, but is one that you will continue to use throught out your physics career. This book contains the basics for college level physics, but describes it in a way that is easy to understand. This book contains enough equations to make your head spin. You might even find yourself saying Mein Kampf during your reading time :}
This book aslo contains a few adaptations of your main equations which make it easier to understand the ties between all of the laws of conservation. Overall a good book.

              Book Description

One of the most exciting developments in modern physics has been the discovery of the new class of oxide materials with high superconducting transition temperature. Systems with Tc well above liquid nitrogen temperature are already a reality and higher Tc's are anticipated. Indeed, the idea of a room-temperature superconductor, which just a short time ago was considered science fiction, appears to be a distinctly possible outcome of materials research. To address the need to train students and scientists for research in this exciting field, Jeffrey W. Lynn and colleagues at the University of Maryland, College Park, as well as other superconductivity experts from around the U.S., taught a graduate-level course in the fall of 1987, from which the chapters in this book were drawn. Subjects included are: Survey of superconductivity (J. Lynn).- The theory of type-II superconductivity (D. Belitz).- The Josephson effect (P. Ferrell).- Crystallography (A. Santoro).- Electronic structure (C.P. Wang).- Magnetic properties and interactions (J. Lynn).- Synthesis and diamagnetic properties (R. Shelton).- Electron pairing (P. Allen).- Superconducting devices (F. Bedard).- Superconducting properties (J. Crow, N.-P. Ong).

                Book Description

"One of the great legacies of the classification of the finite simple groups is the existence of the Monster $\ldots$ Work of Borcherds and Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman led to the notion of a vertex (operator) algebra, which was seen to be the same as the chiral algebras used by physicists in conformal field theory$\ldots$ The connections with physics have proven to be invaluable, and it seems likely that another branch of mathematics whose origins are eerily similar to those of moonshine---that is, elliptic cohomology---will turn out to be very relevant too. --- from the Preface

This volume contains the proceedings of a Joint Summer Research Conference held at Mount Holyoke College in June 1994. As perhaps the first conference proceedings devoted exclusively to the subject known as "Moonshine", this work contains something for many mathematicians and physicists.

                Features:

Results concerning the monster simple group and other simple groups.

                Connections with elliptic cohomology.

Connections with 2-dimensional conformal field theory.

                The role of operads.

                Connections with modular functions.

Much of Moonshine, the Monster, and Related Topics features new results not available anywhere else.

4 out of 5 stars A skilled writer, but too much ambiguity for my taste.......2002-10-12

Eudora Welty had a long and distinguished writing career. Her stories are set in the small southern towns that she knows so well, and she is known for her character portrayal. This book, which is my first experience with her work, is no exception. The stories are short and full of meaning. Some are simple and some border on the horrific. But all of them leave a lasting impression, causing me to ponder their meaning. The characters are well developed. There is no doubt that Ms. Welty is a master of her craft.

It's true that the people come alive right off the pages. Only problem is that I just didn't like any of them. Each story presents some sort of a puzzle. She packs them with great imagery and wonderful details. I found myself getting involved in reading them. And then, when the story ended, there was a lingering question. What had happened? I was always left with an uncomfortable feeling. And left wondering.

I am sure that this ambiguity was the writer's intention. And I do applaud her skill. I'm glad I had the experience of reading her work. I just don't want to read any more of it.

                5 out of 5 stars Review.......2001-11-02

This was the first Eudora Welty book I've read. Because this is my freshman year in college, I'm wondering why it took me so long.
Like her senior, Southern cohort Faulkner, Welty concentrates her gentle touch on characters in and around Mississippi. Every story is remarkable in its own way, but there are a few standouts. "Lily Daw and the Three Ladies" is an amusing tale of a dim-witted girl who's on the brink of marriage, is snatched away, and then thrown right back when her beau comes calling. The Hitch Hikers is a brooding story of a murder in a traveling salesman's car. My favorite is The Key, in which a filched key gives doubtful, deaf newlyweds new reason for hope of love and contentment.
Miss Welty puts an incredible amount of feeling into her stories, but is not afraid to allow the charming or even picayune to provide distraction from the gravity surrounding. This collection encapsulates the famous Death of a Traveling Salesman. Lovely.

                5 out of 5 stars A brilliant debut.......2000-01-07

In her first book, Eudora Welty surpassed the mannered and overreaching efforts of more celebrated Southern authors. She examined the inner lives of varied characters -- male and female, black and white, funny and brutal -- and submitted them all to her quiet and curious personality. The effect is both timeless and strange.

Eudora Welty's subjects are the people who live in southern towns like Jackson, Mississippi, which has been her home for all of her long life. I've stayed in one place,' she says, and 'it's become the source of the information that stirs my imagination.' Her distinctive voice and wry observations are rooted in the southern conversational tradition. The stories in this volume, from the first two collections she published, range in tone from the quietly understated and psychologically subtle to the outrageously grotesque. Linking them all is Welty's remarkable ear for the language and point of view of the South. 'She's a lot smarter than her cousins in Beula,' someone remarks about a reputed suicide in one story. 'Especially Edna Earle, that never did get to be what you'd call a heavy thinker. Edna Earle could sit and ponder all day on how the little tail of the 'c' got through the 'I' in a Coca-Cola sign."

The stories in this volume, from the first two collections she published, range in tone from the quietly understated and psychologically subtle to the outrageously grotesque.

5 out of 5 stars Jewels From A Master Hand.......2002-05-03

At the time of her death, Eudora Welty was considered the single greatest living American author, a writer who (although she actually won the Pulitzer Prize for the novel THE OPTIMIST'S DAUGHTER) made her reputation with that most difficult of all literary forms, the short story. One of America's most frequently anthologized writers, Welty's distinctly Southern tone and the fineness of her over-all work makes her the only regional author whose reputation consistently challenges that of William Faulkner.

This particular collection of Welty's short stories includes all works previously collected under the titles A CURTAIN OF GREEN and THE WIDE NET, which were her first and second published short story volumes, written in the 1930s and 1940s. The stories from the former are widely known, and include such favorites as "The Petrified Man," "Keela, the Outcast Indian Maiden," "Why I Live at the P.O.," and "The Worn Path." Although less well known, stories from the latter are equally fine, and include such titles as "First Love," "The Wide Net," and "Livvy."

Welty was blessed with a talent for writing from the inside of the character, and in reading her work one consistently feels that one is not so much reading Welty as the writings of the characters she presents--writings rendered with superlative, memorable imagery. But although Welty's work generally consists of character portrait rather than plot-driven material and maintains a stylistically consistent tone, it is remarkably varied, ranging from the outrageously comic to the deeply touching to the profoundly disquieting.

Of particular interest to modern readers is the way in which Welty, who wrote primarily during the era of segregation, addresses race in her work. In one sense, she does not address it at all, for her work is not issue-oriented; at the same time, however, certain aspects of her work (such as characters who occasionally use the 'n' word, which even in the South of this era carried certain implications about the mentality and social class of the person who used it) indicate her awareness of the slow-boil hidden beneath the surface of Southern society. Although it is not included in this particular collection, those interested in Welty's work would do well to read her 1960s story "Where Is The Voice Coming From?," a fearsome portrait of violent racism in action, for Welty's ultimate position on the matter.

These stories are a great read. With tons of soul, humor and guts, Eudora Welty weaves these tales of the south like a master. Mark down the ones you like because you'll want to read them again.
