Book Description

Describes the chaos apparent in simple mechanical systems with the goal of elucidating the connections between classical and quantum mechanics. It develops the relevant ideas of the last two decades via geometric intuition rather than algebraic manipulation. The historical and cultural background against which these scientific developments have occurred is depicted, and realistic examples are discussed in detail. This book enables entry-level graduate students to tackle fresh problems in this rich field.

5 out of 5 stars Chatty and fun, but not to be used as the basis for anything but a reading course.......2007-04-15

There are all kinds of physics books. There are books for didactics; nobody actually uses, say, Jackson's book on Classical Electrodynamics for anything but didactics. You can tell the books that are useful for teaching in a classroom by the presence of extensive problem sets. This book has none. So, with this, let me dispose of the notion that you should be able to teach a 'quantum chaos' course based on this book. There are also books which explain in great technical detail all about a given small subject area; Fritz Haake's book on 'Quantum Signatures of Chaos' is a good example of this (though it's really about Random Matrix theory, which is but one quantum signature of chaos; a whole book on just one small area of this subject -covered in a few pages in Gutzwiller's book). Then there are books which are reviews of a subject. Gutzwiller wrote a book which is a review of a subject. It's a very good one.

One could actually go through this, read it, know about the existence of many things, and read up on them as is appropriate for one's research. That is how I used the book. Gutzwiller writes very well, and communicates his enthusiasm for the subject matter. The bibliography is extensive, and you could indeed learn all about anything you needed to by going through the bibliographic references for the details. An actual review which takes you from knowing about Hamilton Jacobi theory and the WKB approximation and covering all the material he presented in every detail needed to understand the whole mess .... I doubt as any such book exists. It would be an encyclopedia. If you simply want to understand the Gutzwiller trace formula starting at that level, there are books which do it reasonably well (Cvitanovic's is a great effort in that direction). This is not such a book; this is a review. A review of a very important body of work. That is this book's purpose, and it serves it admirably well.

As for why Gutzwiller is important; if you think the correspondence principle is interesting, the Gutzwiller trace formula is the main useful way we know of thinking about it in detail. Most physicists think about the area where quantum mechanics becomes classical as a sort of intellectual blur. This is a mistake. This is arguably a much more interesting place to think about than, say, what happened in the first 10^-35 seconds of the big bang. For example, one can actually do experiments in the semiclassical regime. Experiments which only involve optics. There's gold in them there hills, and nobody is looking there. Mesoscopic physics as applied to device physics may eventually force people to think about these issues in detail, but I somehow doubt the device guys are going to reinvent quantum mechanics. Gutzwiller thought about these issues in the 1960s while working on practical problems for IBM. These are the fundamental mysteries, folks: if you're an ambitious young physicist who wants to make a real contribution to science; leave the noodle theory alone, and look into this stuff. Following the herd will get you a nice career, but immortality belongs to the one who plays Einstein or Poincare to Gutzwiller's Minkowski.

2 out of 5 stars Close to Useless.......2006-08-23

I am used to reading graduate texts where I have to fill in extensive portions of the logic. However, this book does not even begin to explain the results contained in it. It is simply a collection of results, with references to other texts with little explanation (although he does a good job motivating the results).

As I was writing this review, I opened the book to a random page (279) and found the following: "Zaslavski (1977) also starts from the trace formula; he gets a rather explicit expression for the spacing probability P(x) which involves the Kolmogorov entropy..." How did he do this? Well, if you want to know then you have to go read Zaslavski to find out. The entire book is this way.

Maybe this is a great reference for the researcher who already understands the field, but for someone trying to learn it from this book it's worthless.

2 out of 5 stars We need more books on the subject.......2002-08-08

While the question of connecting quantum theory to classical
mechanics, ODEs, PDEs, etc is a very deep one, and the
author is a main contributor in the subject, the books
lacks of narrative momentum... Readers of, say, QFT a la
Itzkinson-Zuber will be accostumed to this, but I feel a
more focused work on the subject is still to be written.

5 out of 5 stars The Father of the Quasiclassical Approach to Quantum Chaos.......2002-01-03

Today the Gutzwiller trace formula is the standard quasiclassical approach to studies of the spectrum in quantum chaos research.
The most striking property of classics chaos is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions such that neighboring trajectories in phase space separate at an exponential rate. As result the long time behavior of the system is unpredictable. Instead of looking for exponential sensitivity, the main stream of quantum chaos research is currently concentrated on identifying the fingerprints of classical chaos in quantum systems. If one were to identify unique fingerprints of classical chaos in quantum mechanics, one could use these to define quantum chaos.
The starting point for the Gutzwiller quasiclassical analysis is the path integral formulation of the propagator. From this quantum expression one can deduce a formula that contains a sum over all classical periodic orbits. This is the main contribution of Gutzwiller.
Excellent Book!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Reference for Quantum Chaos.......2000-12-25

Organization and presentation of the ideas of modern chaos theory for classical and quantum world without deeper mathematical proofs in perfect fashion meets in this book. Historical, mathematical and physical origins of the chaos and semiclassical quantization problems have appeared as an introductory. Topics covered with great care, If you like to have a good foundation in this field, this book is absolute must. It served as a guide where to go in quantum chaos. Read it word by word and consult many references in nature of classical, statistical and quantum mechanical, differential geometrical and applied mathematics. Excellent book.

Book Description

This work, written for a wide audience and general readers, details the chaos produced in the physics community at the beginning of the 20th century by groundbreaking experimental findings and the theoretical speculations they engendered. It traces the slow and difficult birth of a new
scientific order that resulted from the work of many of this century's most distinguished scientists, including Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Ernest Rutherford, and Niels Bohr. Comparable in its impact to the scientific upheavals initiated by Galileo and Newton in the 17th century, and to the advent
of Darwin's theory of evolution, this emerging science--based on newly developed experimental techniques--exposed the flaws in the well-established and cherished view of the world as described by classical physics. In telling this story, the author describes the essential features of quantum
physics, what sets it apart from the classical view of the mechanical universe, and how the new science has led to unprecedented advances in understanding the essence of matter and the forces of nature. As a special feature, the author has presented mathematical details in separate boxed sections
where they can be studied by readers interested in deeper insight, or skipped without interruption to the flow of the narrative. The book is thus accessible to nonscientist general readers who will find it an ideal guide to the breathtaking discoveries of modern science that have so profoundly
altered our perceptions of the material world.

4 out of 5 stars The Story of Modern physics.......2001-07-23

This is a very fine book for those who want to read about the step by step development of the Modern concepts in Physics, Relativity and Quantum Theory. Author in a descriptive way describes the concepts proposed by individuals how and where they failed and therfore the results that we know today. Although a general knowledge of Physics is required, hard mathematics is not required. For those interested a littel more about formalism, author has what he calls "Amplification" windows.Author takes us from Classical concepts through Relativity into Quantum Physics. There are key comparisons where the author explains how each Physicist interpreted fomulas and which one failed and why. From this you can see the different philosophical point of views. It is written intensly but no point seems to be missing

5 out of 5 stars Superb depiction of the scientific process at work........1998-12-15

Excellent, very readable description of how quantum ideas developed and came to be accepted. Creates a real sense of "being there" as the old 19th century world view was shattered, and a new one created, including the motivating problems, the false steps, the confusions, the resistance, the inspirations, the battles, and the victories. Written for the interested general reader; technical content modest and well-explained. On the negative side, this edition is rife with typos and minor editorial goofs. Too many to ignore, but not enough to prevent it from being an excellent read.

        Book Description

This book includes several lectures given at the DMV Seminar "Classical Nonintegrability, Quantum Chaos". The aim of these lectures was to provide an introduction to the ideas and mathematical techniques of classical and quantum nonlinear dynamics. The lecture by Viviane Baladi gives a much-needed overview of the current literature and includes an informal discussion of the pertinent problems and results. The chapters on irregular scattering and on expanding maps illustrate techniques in nonlinear dynamics using the simplest nontrivial examples. The chapters on quantum chaos and on Liouville surfaces stress a phase space geometry approach to semi-classical quantum theory. These lectures may serve as a basis for graduate seminars in mathematics and physics.

          Book Description

The present second edition is now identical to the fourth German edition and includes both small additons (e.g. in Chap. 2 on canonical mechanics, in Chap. 3 discussing the tippe top, and in Chap. 7 on continuous systems) and revisions of details. Moreover, new problems have been added, and complete solutions to all problems are presented. This will be appreciated in particular by students using the text to accompany lectures on mechanics. The main features of the book remain unchanged: the coverage extends from elementary Newtonian Mechanics to the discussion of deterministic chaos and continuous systems. The book ends with a mathematical appendix, a guide to the literature and some historical remarks on important pioneers in mechanics.

For the listed price of $38US this book is indeed a bargain. It is clearly written with a rational organization of topics and most sections are accompanied with meaningful examples. I especially enjoyed the development of the Hamiltonian. On the other hand, this is not an easy text - you may not be able to watch Jerry Springer as you read it; a basic familiarity calculus, vector analysis and physics will be needed to make any head way at all. I wish I had used this text in college.

                Book Description

Based on courses given at the universities of Texas in Austin, and California in San Diego, this book treats an active fields of research that touches upon the foundations of physics and chemistry. It presents, in as simple a manner as possible, the basic mechanisms that determine the dynamical evolution of both classical and quantum systems in sufficient generality to include quantum phenomena. The book begins with a discussion of Noether's theorem, integrability, KAM theory, and a definition of chaotic behavior; it continues with a detailed discussion of area-preserving maps, integrable quantum systems, spectral properties, path integrals, and periodically driven systems; and it concludes by showing how to apply the ideas to stochastic systems. The presentation is complete and self-contained; appendices provide much of the needed mathematical background, and there are extensive references to the current literature. Problems at the ends of chapters help students clarify their understanding. In this new edition, the presentation will be brought up to date throughout, and a new chapter on open quantum systems will be added.

                Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars What cause might effect you reading this book?.......2006-08-20

This book gets 4 stars from me for several reasons.

First, they have cut some of the stuff from Plato. Plato is the bedrock of Western philosophy, something that I feel secure in saying. Countless men have spent their entire life trying to find a suitable compliment to toss onto the bonfire of his posterity. There is Emerson, who said that 'Plato is philosophy and philosophy Plato'; there is Alfred North Whitehead who said, 'All the rest of the history of Western philosophy is a footnote to Plato'; there is...the list goes on and on. Point is, in including Phaedo, a beautiful dialogue that speaks of Socrates death, the editor opted to cut out a chunk of it, including merely a note that he had done so. This does not excuse it! If the editor had wanted to chop logic in this case, and to present Plato, he would have been better advised to leave the entire discussion in and cut the other works out. Perhaps even presenting only the first part of Book VII of 'The Republic' would have been nicer too.

The same could be said of Aristotle's Poetics being in this book: there might have been a better selection made. This particular work needs guidance from another when being read and seems a bit out of place with some of the more metaphysical arguments that dominate the later portion of the book. Had a selection from the Nicomachean Ethics been made, it might have made for a better reading. Perhaps sections 1-10?

Be warned: The key word in the two theology selections from St. Anselm and St. Thomas is 'from'. These selections are 1.5 pages and 8 pages long respectively from (again, keyword) their source documents.

Then there is the rest of the book. Where the pattern in the first half was to cut and paste, the second half of the book the editor has suddenly decided to include complete works by other philosophers. These need discussing as a lump sum:

The other words you may need to pay attention to in deciding whether or not to purchase this book would be found most readily in the fact that the word 'Great' is used in the title and not the word 'Basic'. These later works are the meat and potatoes of the field of philosophy, a subject that dabbles/contributes to many other areas, including mathematics and science. The men who wrote these works (from Descartes through Mill, at any rate) were trained to think in a technical fashion and to present to an audience who had somewhat of a similar background. They take no pains to stoop to the level of the masses in their arguments, instead laying out what they want to say, often in dry, jargon-filled language that can leave the reader feeling frustrated. This is no 'basic' work to help you to understand philosophy...

...but that is why I give it 4 stars. For all the complaining I've done so far, this book is still an achievement for those who want to read philosophy, even if they may need to chase someone down to explain some parts of it (Kant's Prolegomena is not to be taken lightly). It includes a scattering of works that you would be hard-pressed to find in so compact a location for such a cheap price. David Hume's works seem to be especially in the upper price range and yet in this volume you get one of his Inquiry's plus the other 'Great' works. Even with the introductions as sparse as they are (mostly they praise the philosophers) the works can still be understood by anyone who wants to pick up this book and try (Plato and William James -a no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is philosopher- are the easiest and can make for delightful readings in philosophy).

Bottom line: I'm reviewing this book from the standpoint of the average person who might walk into a bookstore and pick this book up, thinking to undertake the noble understanding of philosophy. For students of the subject it may be nice to have this book as a handy quick reference which is compact and easily brought along. As a side-note: if you really want to understand this book on your own without attending lecture upon lecture, pick up a copy of S.E. Frost's 'Basic Teachings of The Great Philosophers' for easy explanation and Velasquez's 'Philosophy' (which is a textbook) that does a very good job of laying out the subject. Those two should help you traverse this volume.

                4 out of 5 stars Philosophy Review.......2001-05-11

Philosophy in general is a necessary tool to understand life and the purpose of it. This book takes a collection of the works that most greatly aid in this purpose to form a concauction of ideas that allow for greater understanding of philosophers and how they can and will relate to every person's life. The preface by Wolff is excellent and allows readers with a less comprehensive understanding of philosophy to still recieve valuble information, or readers with a thorough understanding to see another interpretation of these amazing works of literature.

In its vast scope, this book presents the continuum of Western philosophy. Ranging from anciet Greece to nineteenth-century America, it traces the history of our civilization through the seminal works of its most influential thinkers. Each of the philosophers in this volume made intellectual history; each created a revolution in ideas; each reaffirmed man's view of himself as a sentient being capable of creating order out of baffling contradictions of existence.
