Active Noise Control Systems: Algorithms and DSP Implementations (Wiley Series in Telecommunications and Signal Processing)
ASIN: 038798951X |
Book Description
Active noise control - the reduction of noise by generating an acoustic signal that actively interferes with the noise - has become an active area of basic research and engineering applications. The aim of this book is to present all of the basic knowledge one needs for assessing how useful active noise control will be for a given problem and then to provide some guidance for designing, setting up, and tuning an active noise-control system. Written for students who have no prior knowledge of acoustics, signal processing, or noise control but who do have a reasonable grasp of basic physics and mathematics, the book is short and descriptive. It leaves for more advanced texts or research monographs all mathematical details and proofs concerning vibrations, signal processing and the like. The book can thus be used in independent study, in a classroom with laboratories, or in conjunction with a kit for experiment or demonstration. Topics covered include: basic acoustics; human perception and sound; sound intensity and related concepts; fundamentals of passive noise-control strategies; basics of digital systems; basics of adaptive controllers; and active noise control systems.
Book Description
At the country's edge, on the Mexican border, Brownsville, Texas, is a town much like many others. It is a place where men and women work hard to create better lives for their children, where people sometimes bear grudges against their neighbors, where love blossoms only to fade, and where the only real certainty is that life holds surprises. An entire galaxy of fascinating characters inhabit these stories. Meet Diego, an 11-year-old whose job at a fireworks stand teaches him a lesson in defiance. Meet Bony, a slacker whose discovery of a monkey's head on his lawn drives a wedge between him and his exasperated parents. Meet Lola, whose stolen bowling ball offers an unlikely chance for change.

This book is so funny.......2006-10-19
I love this book. I read it back in 2003, when it first came out. I had the pleasure of going to one of Oscar's readings in 2003 and I thought he made the story come alive even more. I see that someone wrote a really nasty review of the book and it discouraged 24 people from reading the book, that's awful. She based her review on the fact that Oscar is handsome, therefore, not worth reading as if he got a book published because he was handsome or charming. It's just plain stupid to think like that. Everyone I know that has read this book found it to be one of the best books they ever read. I just lent it to a friend that just moved to Brownsville because the stories are so colorful, truthful, and typical of Brownsville that I thought she should read it. Don't be discouraged in reading this book just because someone thought the author was full of himself, that's totally independent of the book.
one of my all time favorites.......2006-07-20
I was a guero living in the Valley for several years and pretty much any evocation of that place gets me misty-eyed. (The line "Everybody has their Harlingen" from the film Selena gets me every time) This book is spot-on. Ni una false note. But the best thing is that these stories are great even if you've never been there. As another reviewer said, these sad funny stories are full of grace. I'll never forget these characters. This kind of artless, unpretentious narration has got to be the hardest kind to pull off. Really great writing.
Fantastic Book!.......2006-01-07
I'm from the Rio Grande Valley, and I totally related to all of these wonderful and colorful stories.... I'm so glad that the Valley is producing writers of quality like Oscar Casares. I have always been proud of the fact that I am Mexican-American and from The Valley, but I feel even prouder of that fact, when I read a book like this. Felicidades Oscar!
Always in my Heart.......2005-10-28
As a Mexicana who grew up on International Blvd in Brownsville Texas, this book truly touched my soul. The stories and characters captured the essence of Brownsville - comfort, familiarity, and warmth....
Thanks Oscar for staying true to Brownsville.
Please write another book.......2005-07-29
Please write another book already. I'm sure you read these reviews. This is the only one I've ever posted.
Book Description
From its founding in the late 1800s through the 1950s, Brownsville, a section of eastern Brooklyn, was a white, predominantly Jewish, working-class neighborhood. The famous New York district nurtured the aspirations of thousands of upwardly mobile Americans while the infamous gangsters of Murder, Incorporated controlled its streets. But during the 1960s, Brownsville was stigmatized as a black and Latino ghetto, a neighborhood with one of the city's highest crime rates. Home to the largest concentration of public housing units in the city, Brownsville came to be viewed as emblematic of urban decline. And yet, at the same time, the neighborhood still supported a wide variety of grass-roots movements for social change.
The story of these two different, but in many ways similar, Brownsvilles is compellingly told in this probing new work. Focusing on the interaction of Brownsville residents with New York's political and institutional elites, Wendell Pritchett shows how the profound economic and social changes of post-World War II America affected the area. He covers a number of pivotal episodes in Brownsville's history as well: the rise and fall of interracial organizations, the struggles to deal with deteriorating housing, and the battles over local schools that culminated in the famous 1968 Teachers Strike. Far from just a cautionary tale of failed policies and institutional neglect, the story of Brownsville's transformation, he finds, is one of mutual struggle and frustrated cooperation among whites, blacks, and Latinos.
Ultimately, Brownsville, Brooklyn reminds us how working-class neighborhoods have played, and continue to play, a central role in American history. It is a story that needs to be read by all those concerned with the many challenges facing America's cities today.
Customer Reviews:
Formidable book about cities and race relationships.......2006-07-07
Don't be fooled by the first part of the title; for this book is really about Blacks, Jews, and the Changing Face of the Ghetto. Pritchett studies Brownsville in details, but never forgets to see the bigger picture, which should be of interest for any historian or social scientist. Pritchett is very good at giving you the facts, the analysis and the feelings as well. This book is not just about a ghetto in Brooklyn, it is indeed about urban change and inequality.
Intersting, thoughtful and highly accurate.......2006-02-25
As someone who lived not far from Brownsville in the 1950s and early '60s, I can say this is an exceptionally accurate book. It is well-written and is the best attempt I've seen yet at explaining the phenomenon of the changing urban neighborhood. Not only does Pritchett provide many well-reserached, well-thought-out answers but, just as important, he raises insightful, penetrating questions. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in American urban history, particularly as it relates to New York City.
A fascinating case study of one changing neighborhood.......2002-05-01
New Yorkers see constant small changes in their city, and the cumulative effect of those changes can remake the character and composition of a neighborhood almost overnight. That is what happened in Brownsville during the late 1950s and early 1960s. What had been an entirely Jewish neighborhood of sidewalk synagogues and old-world customs became an entirely black and Latino neighborhood. Pritchett captures that period of change and the various players -- community activists, business interests, government agencies and politicians -- masterfully. He tells a poignant story of idealistic neighborhood leaders who fought for integrated public housing to meet the needs of their community and were instead given massive projects built to house the city's poor who had been displaced by urban renewal. This is a great book for anyone interested in New York or urban history generally.

Drawing heavily on the reminiscences of the Brownsville boys themselves, and skillfully integrating these with material from newspapers, books, and commentary of the time, Sorin creates an original and compelling picture of the communal and individual vitality that allowed an unusual and heartening social achievement.

Fascinating study of achievement.......2004-05-26
How is it that a poor neighborhood managed to turn out so many high achievers, including Nobel laureate in economics Robert Solow?
In this fascinating study, we learn that, in 1940, the Jewish neighborhood of Brownsville NY was anything but poor... when it came to human and social capital. The boys who established the Brownsville Boys Club had all the qualities that make societies rich: initiative, resourcefulness, curiosity, optimism, organizational savvy, and a strong drive to work together to make their community a better place.
In this era of materialistic self-indulgence and solitary computer games, this study provides thought-provoking insights into what it really takes to raise children who grow into successful, productive adults.

The God Mockers: And Other Messages from the Brownsville Revival

Now, Now, people.......................................2002-10-06
Geesh, people are so critical of this man, and the out pouring of the Holy Spirit through this man. Steve Hill's ministry played a key role in the bringing forth of one of the greatest revivals in north American history, the Brownsville Revival. In which i will be attending school there, at the Brownsville Revival School of Ministry. Granted that the bible does say to beware of false prophets and teachers of the Gospel, but i assure you that i have researched the scriptures and juidge this mans teachings and actions according top the word, and he is very accurate in his teachings and actions. By the way people criticised Jesus way more than they will ever criticise Steve Hill. Jesus was also more authorative, and rebukative, and more blunt than Steve Hill. And Jesus is our prime example, he is your Saviour and mine as well. And he is also the Saviour of Steve hill. Steve does his best to try and be an example of Jesus. So if you're going to put anyone under the microscope, i would sugest that you put yourself under it. And do not touch God's annointed. otherwise danger may befall you. By the way steve hill is one of my favorite preachers along with John Kilpatick, Benny Hinn, and Dan Slaikeu( my pastor), i love em.................. I would recommend that take time studying up on the Holy Spirit. You will be Blessed.
Holy fire messages.......2002-09-05
This book has an "in your face" message. If you do not like messages that will challange you, do not read this book. If your not willing to go to the next level in your walk with God, like I said before, do not read this book.
Stephen Hill writes simple messages in this book to challange the body of Christ to move to the next level. We, as the body of Christ, needs to be challanged to be radical and world changers for Christ. Todays "gospel" has been watered down and has been "soften". The gospel is supposed to be radical, challenging, "in your face" (of course rooted in love), and with FIRE!
Before you throw your stones at Stephen Hill, please look at the fruits of his ministry and his life and try not to feed off criticism from other sources (sources are not always right). You may dislike his style of ministry but we are called to work in unity. Stephen Hill has a heart after souls and has a heart to bring a messages of repentance to the body of Christ.
DANGER!!! DANGER!!!.......2002-07-02
Steve Hill (and his followers) should be avoided like the plague. His false signs and wonders are enough to take him outside the city gates for God's prescription for a false prophet.
Steve Hill was in the Seattle area and I noticed that he feeds on ad hominem attacks. He sets himself up as a pillar of virtue while condemning those who disagree with him. This type of "authoritarian" behavior is the same as the cults. If you have an ounce of biblical discernment you will test his doctrines with scripture (cf 2 Tim 3:16) and find that they come from another spirit. Mr. Hill however, will not want you to compare his teaching with scripture. He sets himself above the scripture and is ultimately in contempt.
If you want a decent read, do a study on the Reformation. The gospel has been eclipsed in our day. Satan is mightily using people like Steve Hill. We need to be equipped to refute this unbiblical, un-Christian teaching in this godless society.
Remember, Christ didn't rebuke the sinner and tax collector. Christ declared "woe" (or "damned be unto you") to the religious elite of the first century. This guy along with Rick Joyner, Wimber, CP Wagner, etc. are some of the most dangerous men in Christianity today.
Be Discernful.......2000-04-04
I found it to be an interesting and easy read. But... my spirit didn't feel right about all of it. I can also see this turning off some potential Christians. I wouldn't personally give my copy to someone I was trying to turn on to the Gospel of Jesus. IMHO
It's time to get right with God!!!!.......1999-02-19
This is a must read for all who are serious about living for Jesus. Even if you are not a Christian or if you are backslidden YOU need to read this book or go to the revival yourself. You can't afford not to have this book in your hands. Get it!!!!!

A TWO MILE SCAR IN NEW YORK CITY.......2004-04-14
Taking its title from the name given to a section of Brooklyn that is one of the most dangerous areas in our country, The Ville is the true story of life in an urban ghetto. This two mile scar running through New York City is raw with the highest concentration of methadone clinics, homeless shelters, and homicides.
Racial conflict and violence are rampant in our inner cities today. As a teacher in some of Brooklyn's toughest schools, Donaldson knows this landscape well, describes it unsparingly, and challenges many accepted nostrums about inner city life - why kids drop out, whether or not they really want to work, the use of guns and drugs.
The Ville chronicles a year in the 75th precinct where 50,000 people live in the projects. Life is seen through the eyes of two black males, Gary Lemite, a young Housing police officer, and Sharron Corley, a member of a gang called the Lo-Lifes.
Donaldson's picture of cops and kids in urban America is both searing and hopeful. It is an image that will not be erased by our refusing to look at it.

Book Description
When surrogate mother Mary Ashworth threatens to abandon the very family that she so painstakingly cared for after a tragic death, the man of the house, Fred Leigh, takes the threat seriously. Mary wants Fred to move the four young children from their small, rural area of Leesville, Tennessee. Fred finds a new home for his family in a small town called Brownsville, Tennessee. As the children grow older and more mature, heartbreak and tragedy seem to have followed them from Leesville to Brownsville. Fred's strict and sometimes physical discipline also follows, especially with the eight-year-old twins, Mary Jane and Mary Jean. This is a story of joy and pain, laughter and tears, history and future, and the resilience of children when love changes hands.

REVIEW ON BOOK.......2007-05-03
The book made me laugh.Mr. Hill's character development is wonderful. He made me change my mind about the characters several times. His insights into the meanings of love, laughter, and the pain of change are excellent. The wisdom of the people brings new excitement to the reader. This is a remarkable story. I thank the author for coming to class and telling us more about his lies.

I recently was in a discussion group with the author and my class on the book It's all about the moon when the sun ain't shining. I thought this book was very interesting and would suggest it to anyone who like to read a good book especially one based in Louisiana. The author who turned out to be quite a character explained different details from the book which i found to be quite interesting. I loved the book!!!

Book Description
In the 1930's, life in Brooklyn was murder. "Jewish gangster" isn't a term you hear much in post-Holocaust society... but back when the Dodgers played in the East and licorice cost a penny a bag, Brooklyn corners were lousy with semitic young toughs looking for adventure and excitement - none more so than in Brownsville. Follow the intertwined lives of Allie Tanennbaum, Abe Reles and scores of hoods organized by Louis Lepke Buchalter into the deadliest hit operation in Mafia history, "Murder, Inc.", as they escape the mean streets and lonely tenements of East New York., make themselves into the most dangerous men in America, only to eventually send their best friends and closest allies up the river. Written by Xeric Award winner Neil Kleid, an exciting new author to watch closely.
Customer Reviews:
Familiar but Confusing Territory.......2007-02-23
Spanning the mid-1920s to mid-1940s, this tale of a young Jewish boy's attraction to New York's Jewish mafia runs a fairly familiar course without adding much to the genre. Starting in the Catskills, the story moves through the well-traveled streets of Brooklyn and the Lower East Side, as Allie Tannenbaum is drawn into the gangster life. The story is effective at showing how the Jewish gangsters, collectively famous under the name "Murder, Inc." , offered a seductively empowering alternative to victimhood for young Jewish kids. Unfortunately, the story quickly gets bogged down in the convoluted turf wars between the various branches of Jewish mobsters. Loyalties lurch this way and that, and Kleid struggles to depict these twists and turns -- which grow especially complex once the cops start to shut everyone down -- within the limited framework of the graphic form. The writing isn't helped by the artwork, which, while very strong when portraying architecture and interiors, utterly fails when it comes to faces, as the various characters blend together. Ultimately, it's hard to recommend this book when there are so many better non-graphic ones covering the same subject matter (all listed in a nice bibliography at the back), such as Rich Cohen's Tough Jews, and E.L. Doctorow's novel Billy Bathgate -- plus all the films depicting that time and place.
A realistic story of life in a bygone era.......2006-05-27
Set in the 1930s in Brooklyn is a graphic novel featuring something different: the story of Jewish gangsters, run by an organized mob. Author Neil Kleid has always been interested in organized crime, but he wished his graphic novel to be set in the history of the Mafia. His research led to the insights on the Jewish Mob - and here result in a realistic story of life in a bygone era.
