Book Description

Over the past twenty years our understanding of polymer solutions has undergone a dramatic evolution. New methods and concepts have extended the frontier of the theory from dilute solutions in which polymers move independently of each other, to concentrated solutions where many polymers entangle with each other. This book provides a comprehensive account of the modern theory for the dynamical properties of polymer solutions. This includes viscoelasticity, diffusion, dynamic light scattering and flow and electric birefringence. Nonlinear viscoelasticity is discussed in detail on the basis of molecular dynamical models. The book fills a gap between classical theory and modern developments and constructs a consistent picture for the dynamics of polymer solutions over the entire concentration range.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2002-08-05

Excellent book: but to grasp everything one will need to read through a few simpler texts first, say Scaling Concepts by de Gennes, Introduction to Polymer Physics by Doi, some Rheology book say Viscoelastic properties of Polymers by Ferry and Polymer Solutions by I Teraoka.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, but not for beginners.......2001-02-14

This book is excellent, there is maybe none better that gets into the fundamentals of polymer motion. A warning: I read two or three other textbooks before I could understand this one.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the best........1997-04-13

This book is great. It clearifies many ideas about polymer dynamics. If you want to understand more about this area, there is no better book to start with. But be careful, it was not designed for beginners. This is really great

    Book Description

Despite the great strides in nonlinear dynamics over the past 40 years, applying nonlinear dynamics to polymeric systems has not received much attention. This book addresses this absence by covering present theory, modeling, and experiments of nonlinear dynamics in polymeric systems. Oscillating chemical reactions, propagating fronts, far-from equilibrium pattern formation, Turing structures, and chaos are but some of the exotic phenomena discussed in this book. The book is divided into six sections. The first section introduces nonlinear dynamics and shows how polymeric systems exhibit comparable phenomena. The second section addresses phenomena in gels in which mechanical effects can be important. Coupling gels and chemistry allow some new phenomena and potentially useful devices. The third section reviews frontal polymerization and includes chapters on new chemistry and new modeling. The fourth section focuses on interfacial systems, including polymer-like surfactant systems, laser excited systems, and dewetting phenomena. Phase separation is discussed in the fifth section. Finally, oscillating reactions-the prototypical nonlinear chemical dynamical systems-close the book.

      Book Description

The idea of the book is to provide a comprehensive overview of computational physics methods and techniques, that are used for materials modeling on different length and time scales. Each chapter first provides an overview of the physical basic principles which are the basis for the numerical and mathematical modeling on the respective length scale.

The book includes the micro scale, the meso-scale and the macro scale. The chapters follow this classification. The book will explain in detail many tricks of the trade of some of the most important methods and techniques that are used to simulate materials on the perspective levels of spacial and temporal resolution. Case studies are occassionally included to further illustrate some methods or theoretical considerations. Example applications for all techniques are provided, some of which are from the author’s own contributions to some of the research areas. Methods are explained, if possible, on the basis of the original publications but also references to standard text books established in the various fields are mentioned.

        5 out of 5 stars Indispensable reference.......2003-08-22

This is a good starting point for the reader interested in rheology or polymer dynamics. Many definitions and concepts widely used in the field of rheology of complex fluids can be found in this work. One of the introductory chapters is dedicated to qualitatively explain the most counter intuitive phenomena found in polymeric liquids. The rest of the book is primarily devoted to describe a variety of models, frequently illustrated with experimental data. The models are provided in a self-contained fashion, facilitating their use nad understanding.
Vol. I is a detailed introduction to rheology, with plenty of exercises. Explains in a clear way a variety of concepts such as material functions, and many classical models. Contains useful tables and appendices.
Vol. II also has good appendices and tables. It goes in detail through several microscopic models of polymers, starting from the simplest ones. Chapters are of increasing difficulty, getting more and more technical through the book, a good idea is to work the problems and exercises in detail. After this process is likely that the reader will be able to understand many polymer rheology papers.

          Book Description

This is the first comprehensive monograph on a new thermodynamic theory that goes beyond the classical theory. In contrast to the classical approach, the local equilibrium hypothesis is abandoned, and the basic variables are complemented by non-equilibrium quantities. The statements behind extended thermodynamics are confirmed by the kinetic theory of gases and statistical mechanics. The book covers a wide spectrum of applications, and also contains a wide discussion of the foundations and the scope of the most current theories of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The new edition reflects new developments and contains a new chapter on the interplay between hydrodynamics and thermodynamics, a field of active research.

            Book Description

This monograph contains the fundamentals of the theory and gives a compact and consistent picture of the different relaxation phenomena in very concentrated solutions and melts of linear polymers (diffusion, neutron scattering, viscoelasticity, and optical birefringence) from a macromolecular point of view and without any specific hypotheses. It can be considered as complementary reading to the classic textbook by Doi and Edwards. The original approach taken to the problem allows us to understand why numerous attempts to find the 3.4-index law for the viscosity coefficient of linear polymers in the frame of the reptation-tube model were doomed to fail, and have failed during the last twenty years. It also helps us to derive the proper constitutive relation for polymers of different architecture.
The monograph can be used as a textbook for graduate students with some background in physics and mathematics. It could provide material for a one- or two-semester graduate- level course in polymer dynamics. The monograph presents topics in a self-contained way that makes it a suitable reference book for professional researchers in the fields of rheology, polymer science, polymer engineering, and material science.

From the author: Two theoretical models are proposed to describe rearrangement mechanisms for supermolecular structures of oligomeric liquids. The first is based on the concept of associate-size distribution, varying with the addition of molecules to the associates. These molecules are activated by external action. The other model takes into account the fact that after activation, the equilibrium size distribution function is attained by way of an activated molecule redistribution between associates, owing to "cleavage-addition." Within the framework of accepted restrictions, the analytical solutions were obtained adequately to describe rheological and relaxation relationships revealed for various types of oligomeric systems.

From the author: Molecular dynamics has been used to study possible dynamic mechanisms that may contribute to the property degradation known to exist for polybenzimidazole (PBI) upon hydration. During this study, chaotic movements of a chain pair were observed. Changes in onset and duration of this movement were also observed, which depended upon both hydration state and stress direction involved. Such trends suggested that specific mechanistic pathways may exist that could directly lead to property (such as modulus) loss.

                  Book Description

This bountiful, first-time-ever omnibus collection of more than fifty tales by one of Ireland's liveliest and most popular story writers offers holiday charm, human idiosyncrasy, and Gaelic humor by the Christmas stockingful. Drawing on the rich folk culture of County Kerry, John B. Keane brings new life to old custom in his portrayals of the special holiday dreams and everyday shortcomings of not-so-ordinary country people during the Christmas season. At the same time that he revels in the charms and eccentricities of the Irish, Keane also exposes the fallible souls that lie behind them. With enough good cheer to warm the heart throughout the holiday season and the long nights of winter, Keane's congenial volume revisits the Christmases celebrated by characters like Dotie Tupper and Johnny Naile, the doughty Canon Doyle and deaf Canon Cornelius Coodle, the amiable spendthrift Aenias Mackson and Hiccups O'Reilly, who disappears one Christmas Eve for seven years. Whether recounting "The Miracle of Ballybradawn," "The Great Christmas Raid at Balleybooley," or "The Order of MacMoolamawn," whether telling the tales of "The Magic Stoolin," "A Tasmanian Backhander," "The Fourth Wise Man," or the "Last Christmas Eve of the Twentieth Century," Keane bears delightful witness to the strengths and failings, the trials and triumphs, of the inhabitants in his eccentric corner of County Kerry, Ireland.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Irish Literature at its very best.......2005-01-07

Over the last year I've considered myself truly fortunate to have discovered the work of John Keane. In September of 2004 I stopped by the Dublin Writer's Museum and saw his books prominently featured. Much harder to spot in America and not fiction that I had previously run across. On a whim I took a chance and bought one of his books: it was one of the best gambles I've made.

This magnificent and long book of short stories absolutely sparkles with carefully drawn, always engaging and focused tales of characters that command the page with energy and wit that is wholly and mysteriously their own. John Keane rolls out the welcome mat for the reader - he is absolutely honest and at the same time conspiratorial as he pulls you into the world of his characters. Ireland telegraphs through very strongly in these tales, however, the characters, the intrigue and the resounding integrity of these stories is absolutely universal and timeless. It would be misleading to simply categorize Keane as an Irish author. I've read many of these stories multiple times and they only get better with each reading. An Irish Christmas Feast is one of the very few books I've bought and given as a gift. Not a book to borrow, An Irish Christmas Feast is a book to own.
