Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Electronics .......2007-09-24

Well written and easy to read and comprehend. Emphasis is on understanding basic principles, not on detailed mathematical analysis and proofs. It was last updated more than 20 years ago, but is remarkably current. It is the textbook for the university level music technology electronics course I teach.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best general electronics/electrical engineering book I've ever seen........2007-08-16

I've never seen anything that comes close. If you're interested in electronics as a hobby or as a career this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The answers you need.......2007-06-08

If you want to know how to design stuff that works without getting bogged down in the kind of math that gives most people the sweats, BUY THIS BOOK.

Yes, some of it is showing it's age, but even those bits have an enormous amount of clever design insights and very cool solutions to non obvious problems.

In short, whether electronics is a hobby or a career, you cannot do without this book on your shelf, preferably close at hand.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful? Reference, yes. Teaching/learning, no........2007-06-01

I've used this book for two quarters at ohio university in physics 272 and 273. Other than the fact that the lab courses doen't do much in the way of actual teaching, this text and it's sarcasm is awful.
It does ask a lot of questions, but as a teaching text for an introductory set of labs, it is terrible. You may think I'm just too stupid to benefit from sarcastic questions with no material in the text to answer them, but if that is the case, you are probably some nerd type that knows very little in the way of education.
I'll be selling this set of texts, which is unusual, since as a teacher, I generally keep all my texts for future reference (even my introduction to particle physics by Das, and my quantum mechanics text by Ira Levine)...save money and use google, or wikipedia you will find more detailed answers.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-09

This book came well recommended and has not been a disappointment. It is not in the style of anything written by the ARRL for learning LRC and RF material, nor had it been presented as such.

The information is very detailed and very complete. Some areas are a little devoid of extensive material but the reader should be easily guided to finding material that will complete their education.

I found nothing that was inaccurate and that says a lot for any technical publication. It covers most of the basics and does it very well. If you are looking for extremely detailed information in any particular subject, this is not the book for you.

Do not omit this book from your library. It is a de facto standard and deserves a lot of respect.

Book Description

This logically organized manual is intended for use in a two-semester introductory physics course, either calculus- or algebra/trigonometry-based, and may be used in conjunction with any physics text. Each experiment develops the students' intuitive abilities in physics. Most labs (35 out of 45) give students hands-on experience with statistical analysis.

4 out of 5 stars It works........2000-08-31

I used this book for a Physics course last semester. I found the book to be somewhat ambigous when explaining things such as significant digits. A few more examples could have been used. However, the book fulfills it's purpose. When used in conjunction with labs, the excercises in the book give a student the experience he/she needs to understand the way a scientist must go about collecting data.

Book Description

In modern surface science, hundreds of new physical and chemical measurement methods have come to form a vital foundation for experimental research. This book presents many practical and widely used laboratory methods, but which have thus far not been communicated coherently to students or practitioners entering the field. Approximately 250 methods and principles, selected from information supplied by more than 100 experts as well as the literature from the past thirty years, and arranged in topical groupings for easy reference, are described succinctly with drawings and text. Providing a veritable gold mine of clever ideas and tricks of the trade, the book will serve not only as a useful reference for those starting experimental research in surface science, but also as a handbook for established researchers, providing new ideas for using basic materials and components effectively for surface science research and measurement. Updated information on American, English, German, and Japanese suppliers of materials and components used in surface science research is featured at the end of the book.

This lab manual is very well written, having excellent pre-lab and post-lab questions and clear, if somewhat verbose, lab procedures. But $80 for a lab manual is really pricey, so for many it may not be worth it.

I never even finished the game but the first part i have no doubt. But when I started to read this i just had to buy it and wanted to know who BlackRose really was. I never though she would be the kind of person she was in real life in the book then how different she was in the game. I was suprised and just could stop reading from start to finish. She made me wish that i was in her shoes o be ablt oplay in the games aong side Kite and have those awsome controls, i was completly jealous. The real BlackRose was so suprising i had to keep on reaing to find out why she played and why she acted the way she does.

            3 out of 5 stars Scion's Say.......2006-10-19

.hack//Another Birth is a novelization of a video game screenplay. Adding in the fact it was translated from Japanese into English, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that this isn't exactly what you consider quality reading. The narrative is boring, character relationships are rather flat, the dialog is pretty basic (especially in the beginning), and it won't take masterful readers more than 2-3 hours to digest. Casual readers who haven't watched the anime (or for that matter, even know about the anime) should avoid this waste of their money at mimimal costs.

            On the other hand...

This book will appeal to longtime fans of the .hack// franchise - which I'm sure is the audience to which this book is being marketed. The book doesn't bring much of anything new to the table and you'll stand shocked as you watch BlackRose and Kite exchange what seems like half of their lines (mostly in the beginning of the book) as seen in .hack//INFECTION (the video game).

I think the best thing that can be said about this book is that it will look good on your shelf along with your other .hack// merchandise. More than enough reason to buy it for collectors like me.

            3 out of 5 stars For .hack// fans only.......2006-07-29

Another birth is a novel written in BlackRose's perspective in the .hack//games (this volume from infection to the beginning of mutation). .hack// is a cult classic so it would be hard for new people to enjoy it. This novel only enforces that fact.

            PROS:
*has pictures for people who like them
*its another thing to complement the .hack// library
*gives more insight to the BlackRose, the person behind the avatar and the series in general.

            CONS:
            *VERY EASY READ
*boring narrative (only true .hack// fans will enjoy)
*the book in general didn't feel like it took much effort, the story telling is lax and doesn't go into depth.
            *I can draw the illustrations

This would have been a lot better if it was a manga.

            5 out of 5 stars .hack//another birth Infection rocks!.......2006-06-16

I read the first two novels ( .hack// AI Buster vol.1 and 2) They were great. I loved how they showed somones different point of view instead of looking at Kite, Balmung, or Elk. Well anyway .hack//another birth, infection or as I'd like to call it (HABI) looked at Akira's point of view, her struggles, failures and much more in this novel. The read was great. I really wanted to turn the next page. But then I said to myself ( It's 1:24 in the morning I better just finish up this chapter and get myself to sleep.) Thats how much it drawed me in! For some odd reason all of the novels I've read that where based off of anime's or manga's have been really great.
The author of HABI said he was writing 2 other parts to HABI. I can't wait! And last I STRONGLY reconmend this book to fans of the .hack series or no wait...to anyone! If you love a book with a dose of drama, a bit of action and a pintch of Sci-Fi go and run over to you nearest book store and buy this book! It's only [...]!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent novel for .hack fans........2006-06-07

This is the first book in a series of novels that tell the story of the .hack video game series from the perspective of Akira Hayami, the Japanese teenager who plays the character of BlackRose.

Akira is just a normal teenage girl, who doesn't even like video games much. She prefers to concentrate on her studies and on doing the best she can as a member of her school's tennis team. But when Akira's younger brother, Fumikazu, falls into a coma while playing the popular online role playing game "The World," her priorities change. She decides she will do whatever necessary to save her brother, and she believes the video game is likely responsible. So she creates a character, BlackRose, and enters The World, where she meets Kite, the main character from the games. Kite's best friend also fell into a coma while playing the game, and now he's on a quest to save him. BlackRose decides to help him, and the two uncover the horrifying truth that The World is not just a game and there is real danger in playing it.

I'm a big fan of the .hack series, particularly the video games, so I was very eager to read this novel when I saw it would be coming out in English. I'm happy to say I was not at all disappointed. Akira's point of view gives a fresh perspective to the story, so that it doesn't seem like just an exact repeat of the games. I definitely plan to read the rest of the books in this series when they are released, and I would recommend this book to all .hack fans.
