    Book Description

Diagrams need never be boring again, thanks to this manual showing how to present statistics that carry the right message in a clear, visually entertaining way. Exploring the myriad ways to design diagrams, first the author explains how to assess the information to be conveyed to determine what needs to be stressed within a chosen format. Then readers look at diagram options-pie charts, bars, flows, graphs, and scatter diagrams-to decide which is best for the purpose at hand. For instance, simple data can make an impact in a pie chart with overlaps of shadow or color, while complex information may demand more elaborate choices. Over one hundred examples of today's best diagram design are included.

5 out of 5 stars Oh come on, it's not that bad.......2006-03-04

Because of all of the bad reviews on this book, I decided to borrow it from the library instead of buy it. It isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and in fact, it's a rather useful resource.

Previous reviews claim that the author suggests the decorate diagrams and presentations with clipart and other garish techniques. Indeed, the author does suggest using symbols, colors, different stylistic techniques. However, he also tells the reader as often as possible, "Don't let the effects impede [the content]" and such. He states very often to use stylistic techniques such as 3D effects and symbols for clarity only if they will serve to add a level of information to the diagram that will facilitate understanding. In fact, he points out repeatedly in the section about how to make symbols - keep them stylistically consistent, keep them simple, keep them clear, and don't add any unnecessary accessories.

I think this book is a good resource as a methodical system of determining which type of diagram to display your information in.

    1 out of 5 stars Erk! I bought it!.......2005-04-29

Well, we all make mistakes - at least it is pretty in parts. A good guide to whether a restaurant chef can actually cook is to order an omelette simple - if it's on your table within a couple of minutes, the chef probably knows what he/she is doing. In the field of statistical graphics, finding out what the author thinks about pie charts is usually a good indicator - in this case, Mr Bounford seems to think they're a good idea, and he even thinks it's a good idea to add some chart junk, distort the information by rotation or to use fake 3D effects, use multiple colours and so on.
I guess a second indicator of quality is to check the index - has this man even read Tufte, Cleveland, Wainer? - it appears not.
    This book is appalling!
If you like colouring-in with crayons, but need some guidelines, this is probably the book for you. Actually, if you are looking for new and interesting (read "brightly coloured") ways of mis-representing your data, or for transforming data into mis-information, again, this may be the book for you. Mr Bounford has invented some distortions that have not occurred to me even in my statistical nightmares!
I am, however, keeping my copy - it's a great teaching aid - on what not to do!

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas for communicating with real people.......2004-05-17

I found this book to be a very useful resource for creating visually interesting informational graphics. I'm a technical communicator for a marketing-oriented company working in a number of different media, including print and web, and it is important to be able to attract and keep people's attention while conveying information. It may be that some of the methods provided in this book contradict E.Tufte's doctrines, but an ivory-tower nose-in-the-air approach ain't gonna move no product! Maybe I'm not a "serious Information Architect" -- That being said, I found the author's presentation and descriptions of the various types of charts and graphs helpful, and some of his layout ideas will be immediately valuable to me in my work.

1 out of 5 stars A guide for what NOT to do.......2003-12-02

As an experienced information designer I bought this book with great hope. Unfortunately what I saw appalled me. This book turns many of the principles of designing good information graphics on their head. If you have read Ed Tufte's books and appreciate his concepts of reducing "chart junk" this book will astound you in actually suggesting you dress up a graph with pretty background graphics and cute icons.

Not only does this book present questionable aesthetic values, but even promotes the creation of misleading diagrams. One example is the suggestion to just make a 90 degree turn with a bar on a bar chart if that one doesn't fit conveniently.

There are so many bad examples in this book that it is almost useful as a guide for what NOT to do when designing charts and diagrams.

2 out of 5 stars What you can do, not what you should do.......2002-09-21

A visually appealing book that shows off many digital effects and possible ways of creating digital diagrams. Whether or not you should do some of the things shown is another matter.

This book is not for the serious Information Architect - but may be useful for a designer or graphic artist.

Read Tufte and Wainer first - but then you won't find much new or useful here.

      Book Description

An Introduction to the Digital Analysis of Stationary Signals: A Computer Illustrated Text directly illustrates the various techniques required to make accurate measurements of the properties of fluctuating signals. Emphasis is on qualitative ideas rather than detailed mathematical analysis for which the computer illustrated text format is ideally suited. The author reinforces normal figures and diagrams with computer-generated graphical displays produced dynamically by the student. This package of text and accompanying software is not specific to any particular microcomputer.

5 out of 5 stars book de supremo but..........2006-05-28

i am a junior lecturer (started in dec, 2005). one of the main aspects that attract me regarding a book, besides its content, is its supplementary material (lecture slides, quizzes&solutions, manuals and so on).

so, apart from the fact that i cant find any supplementary material, the book's content is SUPERB.

above superb there's only one rating and that's THE BEST (according to me). difference between a high 5 star and a low one.

this book would have achieved that, given that some supplementary material is provided on the web (only 2 other books in my whole life have i been able to rate as THE BEST).

all in all, SUPERB for beginners and junior/senior undergraduate students.

After a brief breather in book three (Lucinda's Secret), the Spiderwick Chronicles heat up with doppelgangers, then dwarves, then a dastardly double-cross, as this five-part series approaches its dramatic end.

The Grace kids (9-year-old twins Simon and Jared, and 13-year-old Mallory) might think that things have finally quieted down for them, but the nefarious faerie world has many more surprises in store. In the second chapter, titled, "IN WHICH the Grace twins are triplets," a mysterious and menacing shape-shifter shows up at Mallory's fencing match--and before Simon and Jared can suss out what's up, their sister disappears, presumably kidnapped. Eager to recover Mallory, the two descend into a strange subterranean world beneath a nearby quarry, only to find themselves prisoners and then privy to a wicked (and almost unbelievable) plan. The twins do end up tracking down Mallory, but only in very peculiar circumstances--not the least of which that she's wearing a dress.

Author Holly Black once again skillfully manages to weave in plenty of creepy details (including a bloody final chapter) without whitewashing or leaving young readers feeling too creeped out--and she gets able assistance from Tony DeTerlizzi's ever-evocative pen-and-ink drawings (especially in the looming menace of the Mulgarath). Fans of the series will have a hard time waiting for the final installment, titled fittingly, ominously, The Wrath of Mulgarath. (Ages 6 to 10) --Paul Hughes

                  Book Description

First a pack of vile, smelly goblins snatch Simon. Then a band of elves try to entrap Jared. Why is the entire faerie world so eager to get their hands on Spiderwick's Guide? And will the Grace kids be left alone, now that the Guide has mysteriously disappeared? Don't count on it.

At school, someone is running around pretending to be Jared, and it's not Simon. To make matters even worse, now Mallory has disappeared and something foul in the water is killing off all the plants and animals for miles around. Clues point to the old abandoned quarry, just outside of town. Dwarves have taken over an abandoned mine there. And the faerie world's abuzz with the news that a creature with plans to rule the world has offered them a gift to join with him -- he's given them a queen...

3 out of 5 stars Series improves as it goes on........2006-12-14

Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, The Ironwood Tree (Scholastic, 2004)

The fourth installment in the Spiderwick series continues bringing the storyline together. Once again, character-building is dispensed with; the plot's the thing here, but by the fourth book in a series, you should know everything you need to know about the characters. And to be fair, you do know everything you need to know about what the main characters can do; you just haven't gotten to know them very well over the course of the series. But that's not the fault of The Ironwood Tree.

Things hit kind of a lull in the series' third book, but heat up again in The Ironwood Tree, where the Grace siblings encounter their nemesis, Mulgarath, the driving force behind all of the (unfortunate) events that have driven the series so far. Mulgarath's minions, the dwarves, have kidnapped Mallory to install as their queen, and Jared and Simon have to find a way to get her back.

As with all the Spiderwick books, the action is fast and furious, with Black's writing well-complemented by DiTerlizzi's drawings. The series is getting better as it goes on; if you'd previously given up on it, give it another try. The books are short (easily readable in one sitting), and everything points to a satisfying conclusion. *** ½

This is about 2 brothers going through a fantasy world to save there sister. This is a wonderful story of adventure and I think you will really enjoy it. Jared is the older brother and he is very mischievous. Chris is the younger sibling and he is just an innocent little thing. Mallory is the oldest and she is a very experienced fencer. She is kidnapped and taken to another world. That`s when Jared and Chris have to rescue her from the evil elves. Also Jared and Chris are taken as prisoners. Then they escape and rescue Mallory.

ONE of my favorite parts is "come on! I can't be late," Mallory said, smoothing her hair back unnecessarily." It's my first match "!

And my response was these few sentences really lead me to keep reading because I want to know what's going to happen next.

Just jump to the rocks, I'll give you the flash light.

I felt he said that just like it was nothing, so if he feels that way he should do it.

Mallory said shut up your so loud.

I think that's so mean and harsh to say to your own siblings.

Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi pull off an impressive five for five with Wrath of Mulgarath, the satisfyingly dramatic conclusion to their series, The Spiderwick Chronicles. After the gory conclusion of the The Ironwood Tree, we don't get even a moment's reprieve before the action picks up again, in a starting chapter entitled, fittingly, "IN WHICH the World Is Turned Upside Down." Thirteen-year-old Mallory and nine-year-old twins Jared and Simon return to the Spiderwick Estate only to find their home in shambles, with trash and broken furniture scattered across the lawn and Simon's griffin chasing a "goblin" across the roof. The faerie world that the Grace kids have so slowly probed in this series has finally come home to roost. Black and DiTerlizzi pack a lot into the finale of this beautifully produced series, with dragons and goblins and elves--and even a magical cameo by Arthur Spiderwick (the long-lost author of the disappearing-reappearing Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You). We get a dramatic rescue, a clever end to a fearsome foe (with some thanks to Hogsqueal from book two), and a long denouement that leads to a final cryptic note from the author and illustrator: "Are there more ogres / and dragons to slay? / Is there more mayhem, / perhaps, on the way? / Ask Tony and Holly. / They'll swear that it's true. / But you still won't believe / what's coming for you!" (Ages 6 to 10) --Paul Hughes

                  Spiderwick Book
                  By: Tony DiTerlizzi

This book is called Spiderwick. It is about a single mom raising twin boys and a daughter. They have just moved into their new house on the edge of the forest. They start to encounter weird and strange things in the house, such as fairies, goblins, and horrible creatures.
They find a secret attic that has strange items, and they find a fairy. He helps them on there journeys and explains what they are encountering.
Eventually the twins get kidnapped so there sister goes out and tries to find them. But will she succeed? It is a great book for kids in about fourth to fifth grade. If you like surprise, adventure and suspense than read Spiderwick and find out if the brothers get saved or experience their worst nightmare.
I like this book because every time you think that everything is ok something bad happens and it keeps you thinking. I also like it because of the reaction of the characters when something strange happens. I know I like this book and you will too.

                  3 Kids save the Day
This is a book review on the book of Spiderwick The Wrath of Mulgarath, by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. The story mostly takes place in the town of Spiderwick Estates.
                  Mom Dad We Are Home!
"Mom dad we are home" is what the main characters said in my book when they got home from school. But there was no answer. Then they ran upstairs, and saw that the place was trashed. And all they found was a little rhyming guy on the table, his name was Hogsqueal. And Hogsqeal told them their parents had been taken by the goblin army of Mulgarath. Then they go to the junk yard where Mulgarath's lair is. And fight for their mom and dad to be free. On the way they fight tons of goblins.
                  Favorite Book
I loved this book! It was really action packed. I think it is a great book for boys, maybe girls too. I loved this book because you can learn lots of lessons. For example, always go for what you want. And the kids don't care if something seems impossible, they will just do the best they can. They are not scared if it looks like they don't stand a chance against goblins, the will either figure out how to beat them or get out of it. Another thing I like was that when the authors put the pictures on the side, I felt like I was in the book with them.
                  Lost Someone
I can really relate to the characters in my book because they only lost their parents and found them but I lost my great uncle Lloyd for ever. So if you feel like you have ever lost someone go to the nearest bookshelf and read it.
                  Read It
If you like to travel to different imaginary places, would be a great book for you

I am not going to talk about the subject of the book. If it has been around for those many years (in spite of the so many observational advances in the subject) is because the quality. I just want to say that this edition is poorly built physically. The words are printed with an inject-type-low-quality machine, so if you have a good eye you can see that the letters have irregular borders. You don't see that in old editions. After one month the pages are starting to falling apart. The chapter 2, which is about the equation of state in a degenerate gas and to which you have to come back to it often, have the extremes of the pages off so now I have to be very careful with the book if I don't wanna lose the pages. This is very annoying, specially if you remember that you paid about a $100 for this poorly built edition. It is a disappointment too, the book is very good, but is not made to last.

                    5 out of 5 stars Last things..........2004-01-29

There are few things in the universe as apocalyptic in scope as the death of a star -- generally speaking, the remnant of a star at the end of its lifespan will turn into one of three objects: a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole (there are a few other variations or extensions, but this is the primary end).

This particular book is designed for the advanced undergraduate in physical sciences, or the beginning graduate student. It presumes no specific astrophysical education, although few without an interest in astrophysics will seek out this text, and thus readers will probably know a thing or two. It does assume a good degree of knowledge of physics, including electromagnetism, mechanics (both classical/Newtonian and quantum), special relativity, and thermodynamics. It also assumes a good proficiency with integral and differential calculus; the higher the mathematical training the better for understanding this text.

Compact objects are the core fragments or remnants of stars -- as such, they differ from stars in significant ways. They are no longer burning fuel in fusion reactions, which is what supports much of the mass of regular stars against gravitational collapse. The three objects of the title are different degrees of the same type of object, and what a collapsing star becomes depends upon how much mass still remains at the exhaustion of nuclear energy processes. The collapse of such large objects impacts matter at the very smallest levels -- hence, the study here is not simply one of gravitational pull versus surface area and small size relative to stars, but also of the distortions that occur at the smallest of levels due to the tremendous warping.

The book begins with a broad overview of what is known and not known, and what will be studied. For instance, the dividing lines between objects is blurry, particularly when it comes to determining the line between neutron star and black hole formation. Similarly, there are other methods of forming black holes (accretion of materials onto neutron stars, supermassive star collapse, or primordial black holes) that are theoretically possible but still (as of the publication of this text) still very speculative.

Compact objects are important in the universe for many reasons. Many galaxies seem to have such compact objects both at their centre and scattered through the stellar populations. They produce various x-ray sources (pulsars) as well as other interesting objects in the sky.

This is not a book for the casual, back-yard astronomer. It can be used by the advanced amateur, however, who has sufficient mathematics and physics background. There are problems to be worked (this is a text book, after all) -- many of these are fairly elementary with computer programming now; at the time of publication, the regular use of computers was only beginning to become commonplace. One hopes that the text will be updated someday, particularly as some aspects of the field change sufficiently that various emphases have changed -- in thinking about popular astrophysics (if such is not an oxymoron), black holes tend to be attractive (if you'll forgive the pun!), and thus the literature is frequently updated.

The authors, both professors at Cornell, have interest in astrophysics, cosmology, stellar dynamics, and relativity. The text is solid and interesting, worthwhile even twenty years after original publication.

I did not have this book as a graduate class text, but I used it extensively while studying for my candidacy exam. This book was invaluable for that purpose. It contains great insight and intuition for many of the physical phenomena described. Its theoretical description of neutron stars was better than any other I had seen. I highly recommend this book.

                        Book Description

From White Dwarfs to Black Holes chronicles the extraordinarily productive scientific career of Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, one of the twentieth century's most distinguished astrophysicists. Among Chandrasekhar's many discoveries were the critical mass that makes a star too massive to become a white dwarf and the mathematical theory of black holes. In 1983 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for these and other achievements.

Over the course of more than six decades of active research Chandrasekhar investigated a dizzying array of subjects. G. Srinivasan notes in the preface to this book that "the range of Chandra's contributions is so vast that no one person in the physics or astronomy community can undertake the task of commenting on his achievements." Thus, in this collection, ten eminent scientists evaluate Chandrasekhar's contributions to their own fields of specialization. Donald E. Osterbrock closes the volume with a historical discussion of Chandrasekhar's interactions with graduate students during his more than quarter century at Yerkes Observatory.

Contributors are James Binney, John L. Friedman, Norman R. Lebovitz, Donald E. Osterbrock, E. N. Parker, Roger Penrose, A. R. P. Rau, George B. Rybicki, E. E. Salpeter, Bernard F. Schutz, and G. Srinivasan.
