5 out of 5 stars Circuits.......2007-09-25

This book covers the first two levels of Engineering classes on circuit analysis. A great study aid and test prep.

5 out of 5 stars textbook standard.......2007-09-20

This is the book that should be made as textbook for ECE textbook, instead of all those big, fat, and expensive ones. ECE textbooks should be like this! precise, to-the-point, clarity, lots of detailed examples! I hate schools that just want to make more profit from students by having them to buy those new expensive books. of course, there's no way to cover all those materials in those kinds of books.

4 out of 5 stars Definately not introductory text.......2006-11-30

I gave it 4-stars because I can't really judge it, so I didn't want to affect the ratings already established. That said, I should have looked closer before purchasing it. I got about 1/3 of the way through an EE course in Community College before leaving to start my own business. So I was looking for a book to help me relearn and move forward on circuits since I still have alot of ideas. This is not it!!! The third paragraph in the book discusses plane angles and radians. It would not be fair to say the book assumes you have a knowledge of EE, it requires it.

So just don't make the same mistake I did.

3 out of 5 stars decent materials but bad binding.......2006-10-16

The book itself is a decent collection of practice problems. However, I ended up with a copy that was stiched together improperly. For some reason, the first 32 pages appears twice, skipping the the second 32 pages of the book such that parts of chapter 3 and all of chapter 4 are completely missing. I couldn't return the item due to the policy of the seller regarding books lik Shaum's, but I was given the publisher's phone number. Let's hope I can get this resolved satisfactorily.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent supplemental textbook on circuit analysis and design topics.......2006-07-22

This is an excellent study guide for electrical engineering students that will serve them well in their two-semester DC circuits sequence, linear circuits, electronic circuit design sequence, and power circuits. It is another one of those Schaum's outlines that is clear and complete enough to double as a textbook on the topic of circuit analysis and design. It starts out defining basic electric circuit concepts and terms such as potential, charge, current, resistance, capacitance, and inductance. It then moves on to circuit laws and then circuit analysis methods. It then explains the amplifier model in terms of components that have already been defined, and from there describes the operational amplifier and shows how to design using this device. The chapter on waveforms and signals is an excellent one, and is a topic often overlooked and shortchanged in most electrical engineering textbooks. The chapters on first-order and higher-order circuits do an excellent job of venturing into the world of linear RLC circuits and shows how to use calculus and differential equations to solve for the voltage and current equations of these types of circuits. Included also are more direct methods of analysis including complex frequency and pole-zero plots. The next major topic to be broached is that of analysis and design of power circuits. This is an often ignored subject in the electrical engineering curriculum, and the two chapters are good foundations on the topic. Besides just explaining polyphase power circuits, the outline actually takes the time to explain why such circuits are desirable when power generation is the goal. The next three chapters do some clean up on miscellaneous circuit analysis and design topics - frequency response, two-port networks and their characteristics, and mutual inductance and transformers, which is the basis of courses on electromechanical machines. The chapter on mutual inductance is the weakest chapter in the book, with less explanation than in the rest of the outline. There is a good chapter on using the industry standard Spice and PSpice software for circuit design. The final two chapters are applied chapters on the Laplace and Fourier transforms and their use in circuit analysis and design. For those whose basic mathematics may be rusty, the appendices cover basic matrix algebra and the mathematics of complex numbers.

I used the first edition of this outline in the late 70's to help iron out concepts that were not clearly presented in my undergraduate textbooks. I kept it around over the years to serve as a reference. I just recently upgraded to the current fourth edition, and the subject matter and organization of material has changed over the years but not the high quality of the content. I highly recommend this outline to undergraduate electrical engineering students who want a high quality supplemental textbook that will serve them from their sophomore year until graduation. One reviewer lamented that there were quite a few errors in the solved problem sections. However, this review was very old - 1999 I believe - and was written before this current fourth edition was written. I have not found any errors in the solutions so far, so apparently this latest edition has cleared up that past problem.

Book Description

This book will save you time as you master the basics taught in first-year, calculus-based college physics courses. You'll firmly grasp the all-important building blocks needed for every physical science and all branches of engineering. The many problems included with guided solutions make this potentially daunting subject much easier. Additional problems with answers give you a chance to reinforce what you've learned and gauge your progress as you go. This next-best thing to a private tutor makes especially clear the topics most students find most difficult. It's ideal for independent study, brushup before an exam, or preparation for the MED-CAT and GRE.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good for review for .......2007-04-18

Aside from the typos (which I have since learned to expect in the Schaum's Outlines), I liked this book. It was concise and provided a means of getting a good review without having to pour through lengthy textbooks.

Sometimes, some steps are skipped from going from one formula to another but filling in those steps helped with the learning process.

Although not a complete study tool for the physics GRE (because it doesn't cover concepts like Lagrangians or advanced quantum mechanics that are found on the physics GRE), I definitely used it in conjunction with my undergraduate textbooks and I'm convinced it did help me with the physics GRE.

I wasn't particularly fond of his treatment of interference but I think he did a really great job with rotational kinematics and nuclear physics. But overall, a good review of physical concepts.

2 out of 5 stars Not a nuclear physicist!.......2007-04-16

I'm just an engineering student, so what do I know? Well, I will tell you this much: there are a lot of errors in this book. Someone else wrote a review that said these errors are a good way to learn. This person was also a practicing physicist! I'm still learning and I don't leave much room for interpretation when something is incorrect. I automatically assume I'm wrong because I'm still learning. This is overkill, but there are a LOT of errors so don't throw caution to the wind. This book also explicitly states that you should understand some "obvious" things. If I did, I'd stick with my textbook! Not completely useless, but can be frustrating.

1 out of 5 stars permitivity of freespace constant listed WRONG in book.......2006-03-08

The book is good other than....

On Pg 244 the book has a MAJOR TYPO !!

the permittivity of freespace constant (a universal constant... used in almost every claculation for several chapters) is not correct. they have it equal to 8.85*E^-11 when really it's
8.85*E-12
In the book's calculations, they use a value k that is equal to the lump sum of 1/(4pi*our constant) which had a correctly calculated value... therfor the answers to their examples are right, but if you plug in their constant value seperately in an equation, your answer will be off.

IT TOOK A LOT OF HAIR PULLING TO FIGURE OUT WHY MY HOMEWORK WASN"T RIGHT! DON'T MISTAKENLY OVERLOOK THIS.

I have written several e-mails to the editing department of the books publisher, but even with requesting a reply on the manner, they have yet to contact me.

2 out of 5 stars Too many errors to be helpful.......2005-12-25

If this book was relatively error free, I would probably give it four or five stars because it outlines college physics for engineers quite nicely. As it is, there are so many errors throughout the book - in equations, solutions, problem statements, etc. - that it will drive even the most persistent student insane. Instead, I suggest that students of college freshman physics use the Schaum's Outline of College Physics, currently in its tenth edition. It is an oldie but a goodie, and the outline is pretty much error-free from beginning to end.
If you have your heart set on working physics problems that make heavy use of calculus, try "Sears and Zemansky's University Physics (10th Edition)", which is out of print. Used copies can usually be found here on Amazon for under $50. There are loads of solved problems and example problems, plus it is a terrific calculus-based college physics text to boot. Since we are talking about a 10th edition, there are few of the errors in that book that you will find in this Schaum's outline.

1 out of 5 stars Error City !.......2005-11-27

The exposition is fairly engaging, and the problems are interesting. However, the answers to many are clearly wrong. For example, in SP 14.14 on pg 179, one can easily see that the answer given is not even dimensionally correct. I would estimate 10% of the problems have incorrect answers. I stopped reading after chapter 14. Too much time is wasted on such problems, only to find YOUR answer WAS correct. I doubt the book was ever proof-read; any physics graduate student worth his/her salt would have caught these errors.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice condensed book.......2007-09-07

This is a great book to support all the information you can get in a single continuum mechanics class. It could be nice if it has a more detailed treatment of the mohr's circle because of his power in 2D and an approach to the analysis of shells and plates.
Best regards and enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars a good source for a "quick review".......2003-12-03

Like most other Schaum's series, the theory sections are condensed, which makes the part more like a compendium of continuum mechanics. The theoretical sections are thus good for a quick review of the material but not a good resource for "learning" the material. The biggest advantage of the book is that it provides an inexpensive summary of continuum mechanics.

The downside of the book is that the solved problems are not similar to the type of problems one confronts in a typical continuum course. In most cases several problems (statement together with the solution) are presented in a single page, which shows that each problem has been solved in 1-5 lines. I personally don't like most of the problems presented here; however, the problems could be useful for warming up.

A better book is "Introduction to the Mechanics of a Continuous Medium" by Malvern, which is the best I've seen in explaining the intricacies of the theory. Another good complement is Holzapfel's "Nonlinear Solid Mechanics: A Continuum Approach for Engineering", which contains both the theory AND some solved sample problems.

4 out of 5 stars better than most professors, but..........2003-04-13

Better than most professors, but concepts are still difficult to grasp. Have you ever had one of those tennis ball machines go crazy at you? That is how continuum mechanics is, you constantly have things hurled in your direction and you don't know how to stop them. The concepts are very difficult to understand since I'm sure many professors have a hard time understanding the course material itself. The Schaum's outline helps very much in the sense that it slows down the hurling of material and it explains where many equations are derived from. This book stands out above the rest of continuum mechanics books in the sense that it offers solved problems, which is rare for such a theoretical class.

4 out of 5 stars Not really a very good book.......2003-03-26

Not really a very good book on continuum mechanics. However, it
does summarise some very important points and equations useful
for quick reference. The exercise is not so great.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful, but also very theoretical.......2000-03-28

The problems in this book where very helpful to me in my applied continuum mechanics course, but they tended more towards the theoretical side. A good purchase for students and researchers dealing with solid mechanics and mechanics of materials.

My school made us buy what is possibly the WORST textbook I have ever read (Physics by James S. Walker). It was like reading hieroglyphics. But the Schaum's book helped me keep my 4.0. This little book of # pages for $10 replaced a 1,248 page monstrosity (no joke) that cost $137! I never had to read one chapter of the Walker book because this little book helped me understand the concepts and do all the problems without wasting my time on gibberish. The best $10 you'll spend on a textbook.

            Book Description

Described by Henry James as "much less a book than a state of vision," "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is probably the most influential work of fiction in American history. Stowe's moving Christian epic turned millions of Americans against slavery, bringing the "peculiar institution" immeasurably closer to its fiery destruction. In "The Minister's Wooing" and "Oldtown Folks," Stowe examines the interplay of religion, domesticity, and women's roles and choices in the shaping of American culture.

4 out of 5 stars Outmoded fiction, but interesting nonetheless.......2005-01-29

This is a compilation of three novels written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. These books are together considered by the editor to be her most important works, so they are grouped together in this volume. While Uncle Tom's Cabin is probably the most influential novel in American history, I doubt many readers have ever heard of The Minister's Wooing or Oldtown Folks. The rating then can't involve just Uncle Tom's Cabin, but must discuss all three books.

Uncle Tom's Cabin, as noted above, is the most influential novel in American history. There's a famous anecdote, repeated in slightly different forms in different places, that President Lincoln, upon being introduced to her, referred to her as "the little lady who started the big war" or something to that affect. Uncle Tom's Cabin opened the world of slavery (in a somewhat homogenized form) to Northern readers who objected to slavery but were convinced it wasn't their problem. The book itself is rather sly: it puts a very good man who's a slave in a series of situations, and it's not until the last portion of the book that his slavery becomes intolerable. The trick is that within the world of "acceptable" slavery, the situation is intolerable, with families being split and various other calamities. The result is to make the reader oppose slavery, even in situations when the master of the slaves were good-natured, compassionate people.

The Minister's Wooing is a different sort of story. It's set sometime just after the American Revolution in New England, and the main characters are a woman of middle years and her teenaged daughter, who have a boarder, the Minister of the title. The mother sets her heart on getting the Minister to marry her daughter, and off we go for a 300 page romance novel. The romantic aspect of the novel is very very tame by our modern standards, but the worst part of the book is the treacly religious fervor that pervades every page of the book. I think most modern fundamentalists would think it overdone. One odd circumstance is the appearance of Aaron Burr (prior to his shooting Alexander Hamilton) as a secondary character in the book: the author doesn't approve of Mr. Burr.

Oldtown Folks is set similarly to The Minister's Wooing, in New England at about the turn of the 18th Century. The book is told in the first person, with the narrator being the son of a widow. They befriend a pair of orphans from a neighboring village, and the bulk of the book surrounds one of the orphans, a young girl named Tina who bewitches everyone who knows her with her bright personality and wonderful demeanor. Some of the characters in this novel are especially well-drawn: one old woman is so hateful that you just despise her, more than the characters in the book do. The problem, again, is that the book just goes on and on, for almost 600 pages, and it takes forever to run to its conclusion.

All three novels deal with the inequities of society in the period in which they are set, and all three have the aforementioned religious overtones that are completely overdone by modern standards. If you can overcome the latter, the former are interesting, but I can't recommend either The Minister's Wooing or Oldtown Folks. Uncle Tom's Cabin is of course required reading for anyone interested in American history, and frankly is the best book of the three anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Tom is the most important book in US History.......2005-01-13

A central text in American Literature and History, January 7, 2005
Reviewer: Tony Thomas (North Miami, FL USA) - See all my reviews
Uncle Tom is probably the most important single book written in the United States of America. No one is really familiar with American culture, literature, relgion, and history if she or he has not read Uncle Tom.

To understand this book, I would urge people to consult Eric J. Sundquist's book New Essays on Uncle Tom's Cabin (The American Novel) and Jane Tompkin's Sensational Designs. The 19th Century world and reader that Stowe aimed at read and understood things so differently, that you will miss much without knowing how to look at this book the way Stowe wrote to them and the way they read.

This book has a broad purpose: literary to decide what is wrong with the entire world and present an answer. If you follow the sweep of the book you will find Stowe takes on everything from whether the issues of the 1848 revolutions can be resolved on the side of Democracy, to the question of marital relations amogn the free and the white. The issue of slavery is not the book's only focus. It is, in fact, the solution.

Stowe's real thesis here is that American Chattel slavery is the number one evil in the world, that this evil corrupts every institution in society North and South and corrupts far beyond the borders of the United States, and that no compromise with it or avoidance of it is possible.

To Stowe, slavery is an abomination not just because of the cruelty, savagery, exploitation, and degradation involved, but above all, it is an abomination against God, the most unChrist-like behavior possible.

Thus the relgious solution she offers is to become more Christlike in your opposition to slavery and to finally undergrow the Christic experience of dying for your sins and being reborn in Jesus Christ. That's right, in Stowe's time evangelical Christianity, rather than being a fob for right-wing politics, was practiced by some of the militant and serious opponents of slavery.

Stowe creates figures that are Christlike who like Christ die rather than yield to sin and influence the others in their faith. The supreme figure is of course Uncle Tom. Uncle Tom, as a a pejorative, comes not from this novel, but from the Tom shows that blossomed in the late 19th century which were a presentation of a mock version of this story with racist minstrel like charicatures of the African American characters.

In this book, Uncle Tom is a physically majestic, heroic, dignified person, whose faith and dignity are never corrupted, whose death is shown as a parallel to that of Christ in the resurrection of the souls of all around him required to eliminate Slavery. If he is passive, never disobeys his masters, and seems to have not much of a material interest of his own in life, it is because to Stowe this a reflection of his Christic nature.

No doubt at best Stowe sees him as a "noble savage" at Best. There is no doubt if one reads this book and even more clearly STowe's Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin which provided documentation for this book's depiction of slavery, that it is clear that Stowe did not believe African Americans were equal to whites. Her then-current immigrationist views are expressed in the way the one intelligent independently acting Black couple presented here leave the US for Canada once they escape slavery.

Yet, this book accomplished the purpose it had. It galvanized millions of Americans and more millions around the world to dramatically oppose slavery. Uncle Tom was one of the first true international best sellers. In a smaller country, where literacy was lower, and when many people bought books through private libraries where families shared books and the book was often read to family gatherings rather than by one person, Uncle Tom sold two hundred thousand copies in its first year and sold a million copies between its publication and the civil war.

Stowe was honest in her afterward and in other writings to say that her description of slavery in Uncle Tom is much prettier and more nicer than slavery was. She believed an accurate depiction of slavery--Stowe had lived in Cincinatti on the board with slaving Kentucky and traveled through the South--would be so revolting that her target audience of Northern whites would not read this book.

Her book launched a torrent of responses from white southerners as could be expected. However, the popularity of her book encouraged white authors, but especially Black authors to write antislavery books that responded to Stowe. Some of the foundations of Black American literature by authors like Frederick Douglass, William Wells Brown, Harriet Jacobs, and Martin Delany are essentially response to Uncle Tom.

Perhaps the most dramatic is Delany's Blake or the Huts of America whose character is a double to Uncle Tom. However, Delany's hero does not submit to being sold "down the river." He instead runs away and travels throughout the US following the same course as the travels in Uncle Tom showing how slave conditions are so much worse than Stowe showed. Finished with that business, Blake leaves the United States for Cuba where he becomes part of a group of Afro-Cubans unwilling to suffer like Christ and Uncle Tom. Like the current leaders of Cuba, they start to organize an international revolution of Slaves and the oppressed!

5 out of 5 stars A great interpretation of a Christian man in shackles........1999-03-13

Uncle Tom's Cabin, written by a woman who appalled slavery, has touched the hearts of many readers. Wanting to change and affect public opinion on the concept of slavery, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a novel, a dramatic, engaging narrative that claimed the heart, soul, and politics of many fellow Americans. It was propaganda and an attempt to make whites in the North and South see slaves as mortal human beings with Christian souls.
Uncle Tom's Cabin is the story of the slave Tom. Strong and loyal as he is, his "good" master, Mr. Shelby, sells Tom to Mr. Haley, a slave trader, to pay off a debt. Mr. St. Clare then purchases him as an act of gratitude for saving his daughter's life. After St. Clare's death, his wife goes against his wishes and sends him to a slave warehouse where he is bought by the "bullet headed" Mr. Simon Legree. Here, Tom endures brutal treatment at the hands of his master. By exposing the extreme cruelties of slavery, Stowe explores society's failures and asks, what is it to be a moral human being?"
The novel was revolutionary for its passionate indictment of slavery and its presentation of Tom, "a man of humanity." Labeled racist and condescending by some contemporary critics, Uncle Tom's Cabin still remains a shocking, controversial, and powerful piece of literature--exposing the attitudes of white nineteenth century society toward the institution of slavery, and documenting the tragic breakup of black Kentucky families.
I would definately recommend this novel to all well-informed readers looking for literature with much diction and imagery. It would also suit the needs of those looking for a great plot. However, I caution those sensitive to great detail of torture because this novel is very strong and graphic on the broad issue of slavery.

Winner of the College Language Association Book Award

Frances Smith Foster has rediscovered three novels by Frances E. W. Harper that were originally serialized in The Christian Recorder between 1868 and 1888. These works, the first written for African-Americans, address issues of passing, social responsibility, sexuality, and temperance.

"Foster's discovery . . . may well be the literary find of the century."
