errors in Giancoli.......2007-09-21
6th Edition: For number 24, pg. 40, it is incorrect to ask about the "average acceleration" of the sprinter. One has to assume that the rate of acceleration is constant or one will not be able to solve the problem.
This is just one of many errors in this book, although none of the errors I have seen are severe.
The problem reads:
"A world-class sprinter can burst out of the blocks to essentially top speed of about 11.5 m/s in the first 15.0 m of the race. What is the average acceleration of the sprinter, and how long does it take her to reach top speed?"
To figure out why one cannot find the average acceleration without assuming that the acceleration is constant, imagine that the sprinter falls off the blocks, picks herself up and then blasts up to 11.5 m/s within the 15.0 m. Her average acceleration is (v - vo) / t, but t in this case is much larger than it would be compared to the normal situation where she pushes off and essentially accelerates uniformly. But remember, the problem only asks for average acceleration!
More mathematically to the point, let her velocity be v = c t^2, instead of the usual v = a t. This is not disallowed by the notion of average acceleration, but it does lead to different answers. Therefore, one needs the additional assumption that acceleration is constant.
Since runners don't accelerate at a uniform rate, we could state that we are simplifying the problem with this assumption, but Giancoli doesn't do this. This is an example of his sloppiness in the name of pedagogy.
Three words. Not very good........2007-07-04
Those three words really are a very good description. The book isn't very good at all. I used this book in AP Physics (B), in all honesty it was just terrible. It was uninteresting, and confusing. If you're going to buy an introductory Physics book, consider Physics (2 Vol. Set). But as always you can't really go off of another person's opinion, as everyone seems to learn best in their own unique styles, so scan through the books.
Another Algebra-Based Physics Textbook!.......2006-09-21
I have taken three straight years of Physics in highschool. I took it sophomore, junior, and now senior year. Each year, I used a different book. I was given this book for AP Physics B (Junior Year), an algebra-based Advanced Placement Physics course.
Overall, the book's examples don't truly help much with the more difficult problems. Explanations aren't very clear, and the key points aren't highlighted. Examples are boring, and questions are less than exciting. How am I to be motivated to perform numerous number crunches with algebra when the questions and writing are so dry?
There is a lot of information in this book, and some of the explanations are good (it's pretty difficult to mess up Kinematics), but the book stumbles in its explanations of many important Physics topics--including Fluid Mechanics and Modern Physics.
Overall, not a great text, but it is very difficult to find a nice Algebra-based Physics text that is as intellectually challenging and in depth. Be wary, if you are not a Physics geek, you will have a hard time plowing through this book.
A student's perspective.......2005-10-17
As one reviewer stated before me, these books are the reason why people are afraid of physics.
I have had the horrible misfortune of using this book during my senior year of high school...it is horrible...horrific...detestable...coarse to the mind. The most criminal error that I can point out is that this book does not have a GLOSSARY. A school textbook without a glossary? Give me a break.
The text reads like a conversation. Apparently Giancoli didn't pay very much attention in English class. One should not write educational text the way he or she speaks. One should state facts in a way that clearly defines what needs to be said. The positively criminal lingo of the book goes on tangents constantly and really breaks up the progression of the information.
Also, the author tends to call an element of a concept one thing, but substitute it with a variable that is totally different. It is clear that Giancoli assumed that everyone who was reading this book already knew physics vocabulary and was looking for a refresher course. Apparently Giancoli, the god of physics, could teach the experts more than they could ever dream. Throw me a bone here...his writing is crap. This book is being distributed to highschools and is also used at the university level. These are LEARNING stages. LEARNING. That's something that one can't do with this horrible book.
It's criminal. Absolutely criminal. Physics isn't a scary thing, nor is it impossible. Don't let books like these scare you away from the subject. It's just a few selfish, cocky scientists that wish to exclude others.
Giancoli, I hope your 6th edition was better...much better. Otherwise, schools will be wasting even more money on garbage.
Informative .......2005-03-23
Comprehensive and thorough. A must for anyone who needs an understanding of applying calculations to actions. I found this book to be even paced and very understandable.

Finally, some truth brought to life................2001-06-27
Something that explains the how and why behind the Childer of Saulot. Most interesting. The explination of the split of Valeren into the warrior aspect (antitribu's Valeren) and it's healing aspect (main-not considering numbers-power Obeah) The mystery about the Baali intrueges me. I can only say that Saulot must have been closer to Malkav, not just in the physical sense, but in the MENTAL sense. The clan was splitting before the Tremere ever came along, much like Saulot's mind........
Primogen Darodine of San Francisco "Fractured is the mind, fractured is the soul, diseased is the blood, you are what you eat. What am I?"
Definately on tha top.......2001-06-22
I'm gonna have to get this book sometime. I have always been intrested in the smaller clans; salubri, cappadocian, and kiasyd are all real cool.
By the old rules there are only 8 salubri alive at a time but now since they are part of the sabbat I'm not sure. I have read through the Book of Nod and I don't remember the passage from the previous reviewer but it did talk about saulot being baal's brother and betraying him to Cain when he started his demon worshipping.
Ohh well I hope they come out with a revised Salubri book.
Always wanted to know more about these guys.......2000-07-27
These are one of the most powerful clans in vampire the Masquerade. But they have been small in numbers for so long that you have to go back to the dark ages to be one. This book has a very good background story for the salubri. Lets you in a few sercrets never before heard of until this was released.
Great information for playing a "unicorn".......2000-03-15
While taking place in the dark ages, the information on the Salubri is far better than what you'll find in any of the other Vampire books. Most of the information explains the attitudes of the Salubri towards their fellow (and rival) clans as well as exactly what goes into the background of one of these enigmatic vampires. Also, the clan's history and possible ties to the (literally) demonic Baali clan are presented as well. I found it to be a great source for even modern characters, as the attitude of defending and healing the weak hasn't really gone out of style. Now, if they'd only come out with a modern-day clanbook.
Saulot's heirs.......1999-05-16
Long are the nights, and full of death and hatred. But there is a clan that rather engages in healing and helping than murder and destruction. This clan, whose members are rarely seen, is Salubri, the clan of Saulot's childer. Saulot, gentle Saulot, first vampire to achieve Golconda. Saulot, merciful Saulot, who was murdered through betrayal and treachery. Saulot, angellike Saulot, who will be the fate of the Ba'ali.

Terrific.......2007-09-24
This book scared the heck out of me. Very gory!! Wanted to bury this book in my backyard before I even finished reading it but you can't. The plot really grabs and keeps you turning the pages. Looking forward to the next book by Thomas.
lovely bloody mess..........2007-04-17
The Summer I Died was a heart racing page turner. I couldn't put it down. I lost my appetite in a few parts (I never lose my appetite) and had to take a few deep breaths. This is for sure a bloody mess....I recommend it to all horror fans.
A twisted but entertaining tale!.......2006-12-13
There are ways to die, and then there are ways to die...
"The Summer I Died," is a very unsettling book. Roger and his friend Tooth inadvertently interrupt an insane serial killer while he is in action. They are captured and become part of his fun. This serial killer engages in sick, twisted activities. My muscles were actually sore the day after I finished reading the book because I was so tensed up as I was reading what Roger and Tooth had to suffer through.
This depraved man makes his victims suffer horribly. The author really paints a vivid picture of what is happening to the victims. Just when you think it can't get any worse, it does. Everything that you can imagine as what your worst nightmare could be occurs in this story. The victims even have to live with body parts being hacked off and fed to his dog. This was very gruesome but entertaining. I definitely recommend this book to horror fans.
It is unnerving that such a twisted tale came from mind of the author, Ryan C. Thomas. Perhaps it is more twisted that I couldn't put the book down, I kept reading...I will say one thing, if I was to have a potluck and I invited Mr. Thomas, I would not let him bring a meat dish.
Five out of Five spaceships.

A terrifying new voice in horror!! .......2006-10-27
Review of THE SUMMER I DIED by Ryan C. Thomas
There's a small sub-genre (but growing by the year) of what's termed in horror circles as `backwoods' horror. It's an offshoot of the same sub-genre in film: movies like DELIVERANCE, STRAW DOGS, WRONG TURN, and the ultimate in backwoods terror, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. In the horror literature world it's comprised of some pretty gruesome titles by the likes of Joe Lansdale, Jack Ketchum, Ed Lee, Richard Laymon and Weston Oches.
Well, we can add another title to that extreme sub genre...THE SUMMER I DIED.
It's an unrelenting read.
Grisly.
Bloody.
And, unfortunately, quite plausible.
Author Ryan C. Thomas tells the story of Roger and his childhood friend, Tooth, and what happens to them in the backwoods of a small New Hampshire town, when they run across a dilapidated cabin and find it's the terror dome of a sadistic (and very imaginative) killer.
But the author doesn't throw the reader into the horror before some careful consideration for his main characters. Thomas takes the time to paint a pair of likable guys, and give them a sense of humor and life before tossing them to the lions. Roger, the industrious one, and Tooth, the slacker of the duo, are young men that anyone might recognize as the guys next door, unhappy with life in a small town, but hopeful for a change. And that's what makes this novel so damned hard to get through without feeling sick and dirty. Thomas holds nothing back; he describes all the gore, all the pain, and all of the terror blow-by-blow. THE SUMMER I DIED is written in first person, so there should have been no suspense about Roger's survival of the ordeal. But several times I had to remind myself that he lives through it, or else no one would be telling the story, right? It's been a long time since I had to do that for a first person narrative. That's the power of good descriptive writing, and building a dense atmosphere of palpable horror for the reader.
The obvious caveat is that this style of writing may not be for everyone. Some may see THE SUMMER I DIED as violence for violence's sake, a literary equivalent to a Friday the 13th film.
But what makes it work so well is the characters' sense of humanity. Even at his worst, the killer, named Skinnyman in Roger's narrative memory, gains our sympathy even as he utterly devastates the human body, and does such outrageous things to a woman's severed head that I can't even bring myself to print it here. His methods are extreme...maybe too extreme for some readers, so be warned now. Even the dog, Butch, has a sense of humanity, and becomes like another character for the story.
However, there are some weaknesses here. The biggest flaw of the narrative is the rough beginning. There are a few too many flashbacks in the flashback and that can get a little distracting. It becomes obvious later why there are so many flashbacks in the beginning, but most of them could have been filtered through dialogue with the characters, or alluded to in some other fashion. But as they don't kill the narrative, they can be forgiven. There were also a few spotty areas of dialogue that jar against the reader's ear. They jar because 90% of the dialogue is so well written that those moments jump out in comparison. And there were a few silly metaphors and analogies that might strike some as plain ridiculous, and certainly unneeded.
This is a hell of promising beginning for a hell of a writer. He has a good grasp of theme and characterization; his dialogues scintillate off the page. If Thomas makes it his business to learn how to condense and edit, he may very well be the next big name in extreme horror. For those fans of extreme horror, and `backwoods' horror, or both, I recommend THE SUMMER I DIED.
--Nickolas Cook.
like a horror movie.......2006-04-06
This novel had me biting my nails from beginning to end. Some parts in the middle seemed a little slow, but Thomas made up for this with good character development. I was extremely invested in these characters and was rooting for their survival. The whole book is nauseatingly gory (in a good way), and unpredictable. Read it in one sitting, its a short read and it left me wanting more.

There is a very good reason why this book is currently out of stock. The images are beautifully composed, the subject matter thought-provoking, and print quality is flawless. Hard to believe that this photographer is relatively unknown in the U.S. If you can get your hands on a copy, it's well worth a look.

Book Description
This is the story of Charity Royall, a child of mountain moonshiners adopted into a family from a poor New England town. Charity has a passionate love affair with Lucius Harney, a young, educated man from the city. Edith Wharton's Summer deals frankly -- honestly -- with the sexual awakening of a young woman. Not surprisingly, when the book was first published (in 1917), that stirred a commotion. Deservedly so! Wharton had a very real gift; it's for good cause she's so well-remembered.

The last thing Lulu Dark needs is a mystery getting in the way of her Important Summer Plans (which include snacking, sunbathing, and trash TV). But when Lulu's mother, B-list celebrity Isabelle Dark, drops into town to shoot a movie, Lulu gets just that.
Isabelle disappears, and despite her mother's reputation for flakiness, Lulu has a hunch she's in real trouble. Especially when she finds a note among Isabelle's things from a mysterious figure known only as The Fox.
Lulu must cross paths with a teen screen queen, a dodgy director, and a fleet of muscle-bound maids before she finds her mom and uncovers The Fox's true identity.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-10-16
Lulu Dark is back, and definitely done with her days as a girl detective. She's got enough on her plate without solving mysteries. And, anyway, Lulu is so not the girl detective type, even if she did do a spectacular job of solving a mystery in Lulu Dark Can See Through Walls. That's all over, and so is school! Lulu is thrilled that summer vacation has finally arrived. She is going to watch bad television, hang out with her friends, talk on the phone, and sunbathe on the fire escape. She is not going to be doing any detective work, no matter what mystery comes her way...Right?
Wrong. When her mother, actress Isabelle Dark, shows up, Lulu's summer plans are ruined. Isabelle is shooting a movie, and one of her fellow actresses, teen superstar Lisa Lincoln, is the target of the mysterious Fox. After Isabelle's disappearance, however, the Fox's plans become a little clearer. When Isabelle Dark is one of four blonds in hot pink jumpsuits to show up just as Lisa Lincoln accepts her award, that's when things really get interesting. Apparently, these actresses, working for the Fox, want recognition for older actresses, not just talentless bimbos like Lisa. And they're willing to use any means necessary to get what they want.
When Lulu's sometimes-boyfriend, Charlie, starts hanging out with Lisa Lincoln, Lulu is not happy. She's even less happy when Charlie's association with the starlet gets him kidnapped! Lisa and Charlie are missing, presumably kidnapped by the Fox, and Lulu is definitely involved in this mystery, whether she likes it or not.
LULU DARK AND THE SUMMER OF THE FOX is a fast-paced mystery with likeable and believable characters that is sure to be a hit, especially with readers of Bennett Madison's first novel about Lulu Dark. You don't have to have read the first book to enjoy this one, though. The twists and turns of the mystery are numerous, and Lulu's reluctance to get involved makes her a lot more realistic than, say, Nancy Drew. This book has everything! There's humor, suspense, romance, and more, all in Lulu's unique and funny voice. I can't wait to read more from Bennett Madison!

A girl detective who will not only make readers swoon, but keep them reading long into the night!.......2006-07-20
Lulu Dark is ecstatic that summer has finally arrived. She's even come up with an entire course of action for her vacation - sleep in until noon everyday, eat a huge brunch at Little Edie's, sunbathe, and camp out in front of the TV. But her plans are destroyed the moment B-list actress - and Lulu's semi-estranged mother - Isabelle Dark, appears in Halo City to film a new movie, and promptly disappears, pulling Lulu out of her summer vacation reverie, and sticking her in the middle of a good old fashioned mystery. Sure, Lulu's mother has a reputation for being flaky, and forgetful, but even Lulu has a hunch that this time, Isabelle is in real danger. Of course, finding the mysterious note from the so-called Fox, among Isabelle's things doesn't help to make her feel any better about the whole situation, and before she knows it, Lulu realizes that it's up to her to save mommy dearest before something terrible happens to her. Now that Lulu, amateur girl detective, and professional summertime slacker, is on the case, she must do her best to keep her head above water as she crosses paths with some of the strangest characters known to man - from a teen screen queen named Lisa Lincoln (who embodies real teen queen Lindsay Lohan, right down to her auburn hair, and diva-esque attitude), to a fleet of robotic, muscle-bound maids, a dodgy director, and an overweight cross-dresser named Helena, as she searches high and low for her mother, as well as the true identity of the Fox.
LULU DARK CAN SEE THROUGH WALLS was like brain candy, but Bennett Madison has truly outdone himself with its sequel LULU DARK AND THE SUMMER OF THE FOX. Lulu is one of the only girl detectives on the market today for young adult readers, but with the amount of pizzazz, flare, spirit, and adventure she brings along with her, that is quite alright. As in the first book, Lulu is her same crazy, hare-brained scheming self, with a penchant for fancy clothes, hot pink Vespa's, and mysteries. Together with her oft-times crazily clad pal, Daisy, the two teens fly through Halo City (a fictional replica of the Big Apple), as they attempt to save Lulu's mother, and friends. Madison has created a character who is irresistible, and hard to put down; while the supporting characters lacing the story are just as quirky, and interesting to read about. A girl detective who will not only make readers swoon, but keep them reading long into the night!

Great summer mystery with a Flare!.......2006-06-23
I liked the first Lulu book very much, but this one has more pizzazz. The writing is hilarious, the characters are fun to follow and well thoughtout!
I highly recommend it to all ages :)
Enjoy!!
Lulu part 2.......2006-06-23
I'll start by saying if you haven't read the first book 'Lulu Dark Can See Through Walls', then I suggest reading that before reading this sequel.
It's just what you'd expect after reading the first one. Teen sleuth Lulu goes on another crime and mystery solving spree with the help of her best friend Daisy.
I'm hoping for a third because I don't want to see the end of Lulu Dark.
I absolutely loved this book.......2006-06-17
In the sequel to Lulu Dark can see through walls. Lulu finds herself in the midst of another adventure. Lulu's mom a B-list actress has disappeared, and Lulu sets out to find her. Along the way Lulu meets an egotistical up and coming actress, a kung-fu fighting bodygaurd, and a pudgy mommas boy director. only the worst is yet to come a crazy middle aged actress is out in the Hollywood world pulling horrible pranks on unsuspecting actresses, and Lulu knows she is the only one who can stop it.
I absolutely loved this book. Lulu is such a funny protagonist along with her best friends Daisy and Charlie. I could not even put the book down. Even though I would recommend that you read the first book, or you won't understand Lulu. It is completely hilarious and worth reading, if you want a good laugh read Lulu Dark and the Summer of the Fox.
