        Book Description

Although it has long been possible to make organic materials emit light, it has only recently become possible to do so at the level and with the efficiency and control necessary to make the materials a useful basis for illumination or displays. The early electroluminescent devices provided reasonably bright light, but required high operating voltages, produced only a narrow range of colors, and had severely limited lifetimes. Recent developments, however, make it possible to manufacture organic light-emitting devices that are thin, bright, efficient, and stable and that produce a broad range of colors. This book surveys the current status of the field. It begins with an overview of the physics and chemistry of organic light emitting devices by J. Shinar and V. Savvateev. Subsequenbt chapters discuss the design of molecular materials for high performance devices (C. Adachi and T. Tsutsui) and chemical degradation and physical aging (K. Higginson, D. L. Thomsen, B. Yang, and F. Papadimitrakopoulos). A. Dodabalapur describes microcavity OLEDs, and Y. Shi, J. Liu, and Y. Yang discuss polymer morphology and device performance. Various aspects of devices based on polyparaphenylene vinylenes are discussed in chapters by N.C. Greenham and R.H. Friend and by H. Chayet, V. Savvateeyv, D. Davidov and R. Neumann. Chapters by S. Tasch, W. Graupner, and G. Leising and by Y. Z. Wang, D. Gebler, and A. J. Epstein describe OLEDs based on poly(paraphenylene) and poly(pyridine), respectively. The book concludes with a chapter on polyfluorene-based devices, which show great promise for producing light in all colors from blue to red.

                    Book Description

If postmodernism glorifies the artificiality of the image, what effect does that have on the authenticity of the imagination? To counter the ways in which the imagination has been undermined, Richard Kearney traces its history, its conceptual origins and mutations. With his remarkable range of vision, he takes us on a voyage of discovery that leads from Eden to Fellini, from paradise to parody--plotting the various models of the imagination such as Hebrais, Greek, medieval, Romantic, existential, parodic and postmodern. The journey is a revelation.

                    5 out of 5 stars Imagination lives.......2000-06-04

Richard Kearney's philosophical approach to the question of imagination takes into account the related disciplines of history, sociology, political economy, theology, art, and art criticism. He investigates the concepts of imagination as they appear in the Hebraic and Greek traditions and as they emerged through the medieval, modern, and postmodern periods of our cultural history. This historical inquiry gives a context to his insightful articulation of the postmodern time and the concept of a creative imagination as a passing illusion of the western humanist, consumer, capitalist culture. He proposes the possibility of a postmodern imagination capable of preserving the functions of narrative identity and creativity - or what he calls the poetics of the possible. This includes a response to the postmodern dilemma with a reinterpretation of the role of imagination as a relationship between the self and other, a democratization of knowledge and culture, as ethically and poetically attuned to the lost narrative of historical meaning, and as inclusive, empathetic, versatile, open minded, and diversive. This book is a vital, intellegent analysis and guide for creativity, art, and imagination in our present postmodern culture.

In another wonderful Miko story, Miko the little mouse wants his mother to wake up and play. It's morning and he's ready to start playing, but his Mom asks to sleep in. Miko agrees to let her, but he and his friend Mimiki (a stuffed toy) aren't sure what to do until she gets up.Miko and Mimiki find great things to do and Miko realizes something --- when his Mom finally gets up, they can do them all together!

Features the same charming illustrations as other Brigitte Weninger / Stephanie Roehe books.

                    5 out of 5 stars Cute!.......2003-01-24

This is really a cute little book. It shows how an imaginative father can involve his little preschool son in an adventure, even in no more space than a bed (in and under). Meanwhile, it's raining outside. It may also help little ones to read. This book is in Spanish but it's a translation from an original Swiss book and there's probably one in English kicking around somewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Cute, Humorous Little Book - a review of "Wake Up, Baby!".......2007-03-08

This is a cute book from Bank Street Ready-to-Read. Bank Street's Level One books are meant to be used as a Read-aloud and so are not given one of standardized leveling numbers.

In the story Kate, her mother, and the baby are planning to go to the beach as soon as the baby wakes from it's nap. [The babe's gender is not given.] Kate, of course, is a little impatient to get going. To combat her agitation, she goes to her room where she begins to wonder whether her toys could wake the baby if they came to life. After that, troops of elephants, clowns and cowboys, etc. try, but can't succeed in waking the baby. After each attempt, Kate asks her mom if the baby is awake yet, and Kate's mom always comes back with a refrain that even "x" couldn't wake the baby. In the end the baby wakes, but when mom and baby go upstairs to get Kate, she has fallen asleep.

Four Stars. Cute Read-aloud. Humorous story. Although not meant for a reader my just turned 7 y.o. and even my 5 y.o. can read it.

Special 'Primer' Notes: Text has plenty of repetition to help emergent readers. But it also has dialog and contractions, which can throw off some newer readers. Vocabulary includes words like: wish, would, bet, could, wake, baby, elephants, herd, marching, band, five-alarm, couldn't, giddyup, wild, horses, and circus.

Young Rosie wakes up *very* early one morning, as young children are inclined to do. After Rosie unsuccessfully attempts to wake up her brother and her father, she finds that her dog is all too happy to join her on her early morning imaginary adventures. This book has almost no text, and the tale is told through the illustrations. It should prove a source of joy for young children who have experienced the challenge of waking up early and entertaining themselves. Even better, the book can be enjoyed independently by the child, since the pictures tell the story! I found it pretty amusing that Rosie allows her mother to sleep through the entire story - a good starting point for discussion with your child!
