The text is a self-contained, comprehensive introduction to the theory of hydrodynamic lattice gases. Lattice-gas cellular automata are discrete models of fluids. Identical particles hop from site to site on a regular lattice, obeying simple conservative scattering rules when they collide. Remarkably, at a scale larger than the lattice spacing, these discrete models simulate the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics. This book addresses three important aspects of lattice gases. First, it shows how such simple idealised microscopic dynamics give rise to isotropic macroscopic hydrodynamics. Second, it details how the simplicity of the lattice gas provides for equally simple models of fluid phase separation, hydrodynamic interfaces, and multiphase flow. Lastly, it illustrates how lattice-gas models and related lattice-Boltzmann methods have been used to solve problems in applications as diverse as flow through porous media, phase separation, and interface dynamics. Many exercises and references are included.

In depth analysis of LGCA hydrodynamics. Good reference........1999-06-01

Rothman is a principal in the field of LGCA research, and it shows: the introductory material is lucid and self-contained. The more advanced topics (e.g., the statistical mechanics of LGCA) are also generally well-written, although not self-contained: many readers coming from computer science or without a solid background in statistical mechanics or fluid mechanics may struggle at times. Still, this is a relatively minor shortcoming, and the generous references more than make up for it. Overall a good book and a good introduction to the subject.

Lattice gas hydrodynamics describes the approach to fluid dynamics using a micro-world constructed as an automaton universe, where the microscopic dynamics is based not on a description of interacting particles, but on the laws of symmetry and invariance of macroscopic physics. We imagine point-like particles residing on a regular lattice, where they move from node to node and undergo collisions when their trajectories meet. If the collisions occur according to some simple logical rules, and if the lattice has the proper symmetry, then the automaton shows global behavior very similar to that of real fluids. This book carries two important messages. First, it shows how an automaton universe with simple microscopic dynamics--the lattice gas--can exhibit macroscopic behavior in accordance with the phenomenological laws of classical physics. Second, it demonstrates that lattice gases have spontaneous microscopic fluctuations that capture the essentials of actual fluctuations in real fluids.

Colorful and more up-to-date looking than similar books. Brief introduction to major aspects of Korean culture. Covers such topics as clothing, language, religion, dance, music, and food. The book also includes a map of Korea and wonderful illustrations. Each page has the Korean word for the topic discussed written in hangul.

Land Of Morning Calm is a lively, educational and highly recommended presentation.

Korea’s history is divided into four periods: the Three Kingdoms of Koguryo (37 bc–ad 668), Shilla (57 bc–ad 668), and Paekche (18 bc–ad 660); Unified Shilla (668–935); Koryo (935–1392); and Choson (1392–1910). Kevin O’Rourke’s The Book of Korean Poetry traces Korean poetry from the pre-Shilla era to the end of Korea’s golden poetry period in the Koryo dynasty. There are two poetry traditions in Korea: hanshi (poems by Korean poets in Chinese characters) and vernacular poems, which are invariably songs. Hanshi is a poetry to be read and contemplated; the vernacular is a poetry to be sung and heard. Hanshi was aimed at personal cultivation, vernacular poetry primarily at entertainment. Hanshi was a much more private discipline; vernacular poetry was composed for the most part against a convivial background of wine, music, and dance. In this comprehensive treatment of the poetry of Shilla and Koryo, O’Rourke divides one hundred fifty poems into five sections: Early Songs, Shilla hanshi, Shilla hyangga, Koryo kayo, and Koryo hanshi and shijo. Only a few pre-Shilla poems are extant; O’Rourke features all five. All fourteen extant Shilla hyangga are included. Seventeen major Koryo kayo are featured; only a few short, incantatory pieces that defied translation were excluded. Fourteen of the fewer than twenty Koryo shijo with claims to authenticity are presented. From the vast number of extant hanshi, O’Rourke selected poems with the most intrinsic merit and universal appeal. In addition to introductory essays on the genres of hanshi, hyangga, Koryo kayo, and shijo, O’Rourke interleaves his graceful translations with commentary on the historical backgrounds, poetic forms, and biographical notes on the poets’ lives as well as guides to the original texts, bibliographical materials, and even anecdotes on how the poems came to be written. Along with the translations themselves, O’Rourke’s annotations of the poems make this volume a particularly interesting and important introduction to the scholarship of East Asian literature.

This book examines narratives by and about the Koreans in Japan from the mid-1960s through 2000. In so doing, it traces the emergence and evolution of a discourse of this group as a minority community within Japan. Koreans are the only significant postcolonial population to have been subjects of a non-Western empire, yet this is the first full-length study in English of their literature. While scholars have tended to treat literary and political developments as separate historical processes, this book proposes that the two are inextricably interwoven, and that only by examining them together will we be able adequately to understand identity, a concept so fraught and yet so essential to modern individuals—whether members of a minority or not. Because of this approach, the author is able to consider issues such as the importance of life stories for political purposes and the place of gender, both metaphorically and in reality, for ethnic self-definition. The book thus engages in discussions already under way among those interested in minority and postcolonial identity elsewhere in the world.

I first became interested in the issue of minorities in Japan when I watched Yukisada Isao's wonderful film Go a couple of years ago. The film revolves around a young man named Sugihara who keeps his Korean identity secret from his love interest because he is afraid of how she would react if she found out that he has Korean blood running through his veins. However, Go was not my first exposure to Resident Korean literature or film. The first bit of Resident Korean literature I read was Yu Miri's novel Gold Rush which seems to have become lost somewhere between the releases of better known Japanese writers such as Murakami Haruki and Yoshimoto Banana. However, this novel and the violent world within its pages was able to stick in my head for three years after I read it, so I was delighted to see that a book had been released that analyzed not only the literature of noted Resident Korean authors such as Ri Kaisei, Kin Kakuei, Chong Chu-wol, Kim Chang-saeng, Yi Yang-ji, and the aforementioned Yu Miri, but also important events that involved the Resident Korean population in Japan while each of these writers were at their heights such as the trial of Kim Hui-ro who killed two yakuza members because of racial remarks, the trial of Pak Chong-sok who was fired by Hitachi because he was Korean, the textbook controversy, and protests against mandatory fingerprinting.

Wender weaves these narratives carefully with these historical events showing the importance that the written word has not only as a catharsis for these writers, especially female writers, but how literature and narrative can be used in politics in strengthening a case. Ri Kaisei was heavily involved in Kim Hui-ro's court case and Yu Miri is one of the strongest opponents to Kobayashi Yoshinori, a manga artist turned revisionist historian whose writings have infuriated a number of people including Yu herself. Quite readable and not overly weighed down with academic language, Lamentation as history is a quick and highly interesting read for those who study Japanese literature or for those who want to learn more about the so-called "homogeneousness" of modern Japan.
