Customer Reviews:
Quantum book cover gauged.......2007-10-09
I was dissapointed to find large deep scratches on the front cover of my "new" book. Other than that it was fine.
the qm encyclopedia.......2007-09-19
It's a bit old school but very complete. No book is as thick or helpful.
Add this to your bookshelf.
Riddled with errors, omissions, and unclear writing.......2006-05-21
Liboff's quantum mechanics text is fairly complete, covering most of what should be covered in an undergraduate quantum mechanics course. That's about the only good thing I have to say about it. After two semesters of using this text in my undergraduate quantum course, I was happy to sell it back to my university's bookstore; it is the only textbook I have sold back so far.
While working problems from Liboff, I spent nearly as much time trying to decipher what Liboff was really asking me to do and correcting his typographical errors as I did actually working problems. To be fair to Professor Liboff, these problems with his book may be due to poor copy editing rather than to poor writing, but the point is the errors are still there. Nothing justifies spending multiple hours slaving over a single problem only to discover that the source of the difficulty is a typo in the book, rather than your own error.
I was also very frustrated at the organization of the text. For example, the material on angular momentum, rather than being presented together is a unit, is scattered amongst several chapters. Liboff is also fond of referring the reader to previous sections of the text. While there is nothing really wrong with this in itself, I found it grew tiresome rapidly to flip back hundreds of pages for a single equation that could easily have been reproduced. This is especially frustrating when Liboff refers to several equations from various previous sections in quick succession, a procedure necessitated by his peculiar organization of the material.
On the whole, Liboff's text confused me more than it clarified anything. I was fortunate to have a good professor for the course, and good lecture notes to draw from. Had I been relying on Liboff's book for my understanding, I would have understood nothing. I'm going to purchase Griffiths' book and see if it will help fill the gaps in my understanding that Liboff's left.
Basis and Representations.......2006-02-06
I am giving Chapter 11 (4th ed.) five stars. The rest of the book is around four stars. Chapter 11 on Elements of Matrix Mechanics contains the best, clearest discussion of Basis and Representations I have ever seen. Matrix methods and the powerful significance of unitary transformations (11.3) then becomes perfectly clear. Yes, I know a lot of this is discussed in Schiff, but sometimes, you just need someone elses view. (Actually, I'd say it took Liboff to enable me to understand Schiff.) To me, wave function representation by sets of complete functions, and the relationship of those function sets to operators and matrices, are the most elegant parts of quantum mechanics. Liboff does an excellent job of describing these beautiful topics.
Good text book overall.......2005-06-08
Places need improvement:
1. Time independent perturbation theory - The justifications for the derivation steps that lead to degenerate case are terrible. The place I learned degenerate perturbation method is from Fayer (Elements of Quantum mechanics).
2. Addition of angular momentum - For a beginner whom has never seen this done, just reading that section about addition of angular momentum, I don't believe one would walk away with anything but confusion. This section seriously needs some rewriting.
Highlights
1. Very complete! This means pretty much anything that one would encounter in undergrad quantum mechanics course is included here, in contrast to Griffith whom enjoys making you work through the exericses and have you arrive the results yourself. Having said that, this is a great book for reference.
2. For 3-D problems, there are many nice tables in the chapter that summarize all the important functions such as Neumann, Hankel, Legendre...etc. Furthermore, many commonly used spherical harmonics functions contained in a giant table is included. Once again, this makes it a great reference book as well.
3. Some harder exercises in the book contain answers or partial answers. The problems are not too hard which allows one to build confidence through solving theml
4. Includes a bonus chapter on quantum computing and a chapter on relativistic quantum mechanics which are both RARE things to be found in introductory textbooks.
5. One BIG chapter devoted to real-world applications...this is usually lacking in physics curriculum!!
Conclusion: As it is with any book out there, there are always good things and bad things about the book, however, there are significantly more good things I can say about this book than its shortcomings....Therefore, BUY this book to learn Quantum!

Customer Reviews:
Good Secondary Resource.......2003-12-23
This book should seriously be used ONLY with another text. A good one (in my opinion) is Griffiths. It goes into great depth (sometimes too much) conceptually and is very weak with the mathematics. Another reviewer said somethings about not giving many applications, and i agree. It gets the idea down, but no more than that. Griffiths along side this is awesome, and if you have time after those two, take a look at Shakars book; its a little harder mathematically, but if you hit those three together, youll prolly have a good idea of what QM is about. Feynman Lectures also help.
Point being: Dont use this book alone, very good otherwise.
Better than most.......2003-12-22
Although I would agree that this is probably the best book to begin your study of quantum mechanics with, there are still serious flaws with the book. I just finished taking a class that used this text and I found that a major problem is that it never actually 'get's to the point.' Instead of telling you how to apply a technique to solving problems, the text simply assumes that you'll be able to figure that out yourself. So much of the notation goes unexplained and important points go unemphasized. I would suggest using this book if you're a first time student of quantum mechanics but supplement it with another book that explains how to do problems (Liboff or Griffiths).
Great treatment of basic topics.......2003-05-02
Several of the other reviews here express my general, very positive feelings about this book, so I'll concentrate on two specific examples which illustrate the teaching emphasis of the book's authors.
Chapters 6 and 7 introduce quantum states with a brilliant discussion of Dirac's bracket notation using polarization of light as the driving example. The student at this level typically already knows what to expect when, for example, linearly polarized light passes through a linear analyzer oriented at an angle with respect to the polarization axis. The authors develop a set of projection amplitudes for linear and circular polarization which reproduce the results familiar to the student. This makes state vectors easy to understand and, in turn, it's much easier to learn and accept the less intuitive results which come from solving more complex problems later on. I would recommend this book for these two chapters alone.
In Chapter 9 the authors in just a few pages develop a simple but quantitative theory of alpha decay which is easy to follow and relates half-life (or decay constant) to alpha-particle energy with no adjustable parameters. They then compare their result to experiment and show agreement over 24 orders of magnitude of half-life. This example wonderfully illustrates the power of simple, clear reasoning to achieve a widely applicable result. Fantastic job!
I own three or four introductory quantum mechanics texts, but this is the one I turn to first.
Easy to read and really focuses on the Physics.......2002-11-27
OK, so this book is old, having been written in the 1970s. For all that, it still does the core things excellently: namely focus on the Physics, the experiments, the theory, AND the people behind the advances.
After going through the antecedents of the classical atomic model, the authors quickly move onto the wave-particle duality. They describe, throughout, groundbreaking experimental work of the likes of Thompson and Davisson & Germer. After setting the foundations, French and Taylor go to the discussion of the one dimensional Schrodinger equation, its physical meaning, and several examples of solutions by means of qualitative plots.
Photons and Quantum States, Angular momentum, Atomic Systems, a detailed discussion of the Hydrogen atom and Radiation from atoms make up the rest of the book.
What I particularly like about this book is that it is grounded in the Physics, with experiment and theory given an equal footing. The authors are gentle with their use of mathematics. The concept of operators is applied to the physical problem. This, despite what to some people would be the book's "old fashioned" nature, is refreshing. Too often, the authors of modern books on Quantum Physics "pose" with fancy mathematics to try to impress their colleagues or students.
This book is easy to read, there are plenty of worked examples and end of chapter exercises to keep the student busy. I recommend this book thoroughly.
Average.......2002-04-15
This book is pretty average. It doesn't generate much excitement about the subject, and it really doesn't give as much detail as it should. This book *should* be seen as an introduction to an introductory course in quantum mechanics. A better, albeit more expensive book, is the one by Gasiorowicz or Griffiths.
Book Description
This book explains the ideas and techniques of statistical mechanics-the theory of condensed matter-in a simple and progressive way. The text starts with the laws of thermodynamics and simple ideas of quantum mechanics. The conceptual ideas underlying the subject are explained carefully; the mathematical ideas are developed in parallel to give a coherent overall view. The text is illustrated with examples not just from solid state physics, but also from recent theories of radiation from black holes and recent data on the background radiation from the Cosmic background explorer. In this second edition, slightly more advanced material on statistical mechanics is introduced, material which students should meet in an undergraduate course. As a result the new edition contains three more chapters on phase transitions at an appropriate level for an undergraduate student. There are plenty of problems at the end of each chapter, and brief model answers are provided for odd-numbered problems. From reviews of the first edition: '...Introductory Statistical Mechanics is clear and crisp and takes advantage of the best parts of the many approaches to the subject' Physics Today
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to statistical mechanics.......2003-05-09
I recommend this book to anyone who is taking an undergraduate course in stat mech. I also recommend it to beginning GRADUATE students of stat mech. I used it for my own graduate coursework and I found it to be extremely helpful.
This book provides a clean, uncluttered presentation of the principles of stat mech; does not lose sight of the physical reasons behind the mathematical manipulations; and most helpful of all, contains a good set of problems WITH SOLUTIONS! It has been more helpful to me in my graduate work than any graduate-level book!
In a next edition, maybe the authors can include a gentle introduction to the new renormalization group theory of phase transitions, and also increase the number and depth of problems.
If you plan on studying stat mech, get this book.
Book Description
This concise text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students covers eigenvalue problems in classical physics, orthogonal functions and expansions, the Sturm-Liouville theory and linear operators on functions, and linear vector spaces. It emphasizes the unity of a variety of techniques and is enduringly relevant to many physical systems. 1962 edition.
Book Description
By systematically covering both the Heisenberg and Schrödinger realizations, the book emphasizes the essential principles of quantum mechanics, which remain hidden within the usual derivations of the wave equation. Moreover, this presentation not only covers the material which is traditionally presented in textbooks, but also is especially suitable for introducing the spin, i.e., the most important quantum observable. This emphasis on spin paves the way for a presentation of recent quantum-mechanical concepts such as entanglement and decoherence, and to recent applications including cryptography, teleportation and quantum computation.
"I am very impressed with Dr. Bes' approach to the subject, the clarity of his exposition, and the timeliness of the examples, many of which are taken from the most recent developments of the "old-new" field of quantum mechanics" (
Prof. J. Roederer)
Customer Reviews:
The best quantum introduction.......2006-03-28
I've used the text as an introduction to quantum mechanics in electronic engineering and the results were great. The book is certainly concise, mathematical preliminaries are short and useful, and the approach is simple but the scope is important. It is very axiomatic and from a few principles I could solve the problems of the Schaum Edition devoted to Quantum Mechanics without reading the theoretical part. I've read several books introducing quantum mechanics, and I consider this was the best.
Do not waste your money.......2006-01-10
They call this book "concise" and they aren't kidding. An example is the section on addition of angular momentum: its one page. An amazing 4 and a half pages is devoted to the harmonic oscillator! The bottom line of this book is that its far too "concise". It seems like it was thrown together in a single weekend. If you already know quantum mechanics and are looking for mastery or deeper understanding, or just a review, there isn't enough here to get that. On the other hand, if you're learning QM for the first time, this book is completely worthless. In the end its unfortunate because I think the author has a talent for explanation, he should have taken the time to write a solid book that wasn't concise but useful.
Brilliant, concise and orginal!.......2005-04-23
The book is simple great, it covers both formulation of quantum mechanics, Heisenberg's and Schrödinger's, some problems, as the harmonic oscilator are cover in both points of view. The modern applications such as teletransportation, quantum cryptography and new interpretations of quantum mechanics (different from Copenhague's one) are introduced in a clever and concise way. The book is great for an introductory course but also as reference. Dr. Bès makes use of his amazing trajectory and intelligence in this book and develops a unique textbook.

A Learn and Grow book: simple board books featuring early learning concepts.
Customer Reviews:
Winnie Pooh and his Party Too!.......2005-08-15
I absolutely adore this series of books for my children. They are bright and colorful, and teach very simply. The size is convienent and they will fit in a purse or pocket to take on the go.
The books are well made and it took a solid year of abuse from my daughter to finally end up with a book that only needs some taping to put it back together. For my money they are worth it!
Images are charming, but the content is not clear........2002-05-12
"There's a party today for Winnie the Pooh! Let's tag along and learn shapes, too!" This sweet little board book captures babies attention with a pleasantly rhythmic beat while teaching shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, heart, oval, diamond, and star. The illustrations are charming and appeal to young children, however, the text does not reference the individual shapes as a reinforcing teaching tool. For instance, the word SQUARE is placed next to the "square shaped blocks", but does not appear in the text itself. Emphasizing the word to the shape facilitates better learning, and the reason why this book receives a three star review. "Shapes," is not my favorite in the Learn and Grow Board Book series, however, the images are charming, and the prose is pleasing. Birth and up.
As a recommendation, Julie Aigner-Clark's, "See and Spy Shapes" by The Baby Einstein Company is an excellent book for teaching shapes.
Excellent Book! I would buy this for a friend's child.......2000-04-02
My 15 month old loves this book. It has a story line of Winnie-the-Pooh's birthday party, and uses gifts to show the shapes. The pictures are colorful. My daughter usually brings this book to me on a daily basis for me to read to her. I don't mind reading this one for the 50th time. It makes learning fun for her.

Book Description
God loves you even in the dark.
Racquel cannot get to sleep. Bad thoughts are waiting in the dark--and the Ugly Buglies, who sneak out at night to nibble on bare toes! Grandma Kathy doesn't know how to help, until an angel tells her in a dream, "Sometimes when people put their hands together to pray, they need something between them to hold onto." Inspired by this message, Grandma Kathy makes Racquel a very special gift, an angel doll that reminds her she's never truly alone.
This gentle story is for every child who needs a bit of comfort in the night and every adult who wants to help. The soothing, perfect-for-bedtime text is accompanied by magical illustrations--strikingly detailed pen-and-ink drawings colored with lush pastel hues. Using an angel as the messenger of God's love, the story embraces children of all faiths, ages 2 to 7, and works with or without the doll.
Based on an inspiring true story included at the end, the book is a perfect choice for parents and grandparents, care givers, family counselors, child psychologists, and gift givers. It's a reassuring title for every child and especially for those who have trouble falling asleep.
Customer Reviews:
a true blessing.......2004-03-11
Since recieving this book as a wonderful gift for my daughter, my night time ritual has changed dramatically. My daughter Elaina, now 7 has slept with me since 3 months old. I know my fault! Since June 2001 I have been trying everything I could think of to get her to sleep in her own room without making her feel rejected or like she did something wrong that now its no longer ok to sleep with Mommy. I read her this book upon reciept of the gift and gave her the angel doll that night. That was 3 months ago. She loves the concept and trusts in God and the angel keeps her safe in her own bed. She has been in her bed in her room since that day I read her the book.

A Very Simple Book for the Toddler Crowd.......2007-01-24
This book is a very simple board book to be read to 2 year olds and under. It has one sentence per page and 1 pony at a time disappears when you turn the page. The little plastic ponies do not come out of the book or make any cute sounds like I wish that they would. A determined toddler might be about to pry the ponies off their cardboard pages, which could make them a choke hazard.

Earning these feathers might be tough
The Little Angel of Independence is used to working with a friend. But to earn enough feathers for his wings, he'll have to help a girl named Elena -- all by himself.
Wherever Elena goes, her stuffed animal always comes along. But sometimes Elena's toy keeps her from making friends her own age. It's up to the Little Angel of Independence to show her that it's okay to grow up, even just a little bit at a time.
You can do it!
