      Book Description

Based on a graduate course in plasma physics taught at University of California, Davis, this classic book provides a concise overview and a physically-motivated treatment of the major plasma processes which determine the interaction of intense light waves with plasmas. It also includes a discussion of basic plasma concepts, plasma simulation using particle codes, and laser plasma experiments. This is the most elementary book currently available that successfully blends theory, simulation, and experiment, and presents a clear exposition of the major physical processes involved in laser-plasma interactions. This was also the first book on the topic by anyone involved in the United States Laser Fusion Program. Dr. Kruer has more than 30 years of active participation in this field.

      5 out of 5 stars A Life in Physics.......2001-05-27

This exciting and highly personal book provides an excellent account of laser-matter interactions from the perspective of one of the pioneers in the field of laser-produced plasmas and laser fusion. It simultaneously develops the broader issues in electromagnetic theory whilst also highlighting the dangers of oversimplifying physical models. The methods of electrodynamics and two-fluid hydrodynamics are used to discuss the importance of non-linear physics. Recent status and topics in plasma physics research are discussed from the perspective of Professor Hora's long and successful involvement in the field. The fundamental nature of laser interactions and their applications are illustrated with numerous examples, including the prospect of power stations providing energy at 1/3 to 1/5 of the present day cost of power generation. Also emphasized is the creation of unexpected new phenomena that result from the non-linearity in laser matter interactions induced by intense laser pulses. Here Professor Hora provides a first hand introduction to his controversial "Principle of Non-Linearity", putting strong arguments that Non-Linearity holds the key to the development of whole new areas in physics and indeed promises to revitalize the whole discipline of Physics. This book will appeal to readers who are interested in laser-plasma physics and who enjoy the human face of research and the assessment new ideas.

                Book Description

The recent development of high power lasers, delivering femtosecond pulses of intensities up to 10 20 W/cm 2, has led to the discovery of new phenomena in laser interactions with matter. At these enormous laser intensities, atoms and molecules are exposed to extreme conditions and new phenomena occur, such as very rapid multiphoton ionization of the atomic system, the emission by these systems of very high order harmonics of the exciting laser light, the Coulomb explosion of molecules, and the acceleration of electrons close to the velocity of light. These phenomena generate new behaviour of bulk matter in intense laser fields, with great potential for wide ranging applications which include the study of ultra-fast process, the development of high-frequency lasers and the investigation of the properties of plasmas and condensed matter under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. In particular, the concept of `fast ignitor' approach to inertial confinement fusion (I.C.F.) has been proposed, which is based on the separation of the compression and the ignition phases in laser-driven ICF.
The papers published in this book cover all the main aspects of laser interactions with atoms, solids and plasmas at high intensities. We hope that they will provide scientists from various disciplines with a comprehensive survey of the subject, and a self-contained source from which to pursue a systematic study of the field.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Friendship .......2006-09-09

This is the next Hornblower chronologically, it was not the next one written. Now that the series is completed it makes sense to read it as Hornblower's career progresses in the Royal Navy.

The whole series is a pleasure to read full of action and adventure; with enough time for a little romance.

Get acquainted with one of the most popular characters in modern literature.

After reading this you will be back for more. And that is a wonderful thing.

4 out of 5 stars Hornblower is beached........2005-12-05

The Hornblower books are a great Napoleonic War era British Navy series. I definitely recommend the series if you like this genre.

This Hornblower is so far the one I've liked the least. It's not too eventful until the end. I think it was meant to show Hornblower in new situations (not just another battle, he spends most of the book hiding in France) to highlight additional facets of his personality. Kudos for trying to develop the character better but I can't say I learned much new about him. Still, worth reading if you like the series.

I have given this book a 4 but it was close to a 3. For me, a 5 is a book that 1) I would recommend to others regardless of whether they read the genre and 2) will most likely reread again in the near future. A 4 is one that 1) I'd recommend if they like the genre and 2) may read again. A 3 I liked but probably would never reread, a 2 was just ok, and a 1 was a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwrenching and warming.......2004-12-07

This is generally high up on most HH fans' favorites list. And there's no wonder why. For the first time, our heroic Hornblower has failed and lost his ship---which back then, was worse than death for the captain---it's a personal book with Hornblower worrying about his actions and the consequences to them. In addition, the care and attention he shows to Bush is heartwarming, his concern for his future and promise, "I'll make you a captain if it's the last thing I do." This book really put into perspective the fact that while Hornblower may not view Bush as the smartest of men, he IS his best friend. The affair with Marie also can pull a few internal strings, the devotion Marie has for this man and her haunting, "You're a man women can fall in love with." (attempting to get the quote right.)

A must-read. The pivot of the series.

3 out of 5 stars dull episode in series.......2004-09-01

The premise of the book leaves Hornblower without a ship and defeat in the hands of French forces. He is to be sent to French for trial and execution. This book wasn't as entertaining as previous books in the series. The misery is still a recurring theme in Forester's books and the author also toys with Hornblower's torn feelings between two women in England as well as another he runs into in France. Hornblower worries about Bush, his court martial, his wife, Lady Barbara, his unborn child which served as the tension in the story. This really didn't serve the book in making it exciting yet in series like this you'll get a book that serves as a transition from one book to the other. The story felt like this kind of book. This book was trying to get Hornblower from the battle in the previous book back to London for the next book. This book had no plot really of the ongoing battle between France and Britain where one side was trying to outwit the other nor tension between characters the way "Midshipman" or "Lieutenant" did. Considering how Forester wrote the books out of sequence it's probably understandable to have a book like this in order to complete the picture of Hornblower's career. So Forester shouldn't be blamed for the lack of plot. The book on its own isn't that great yet necessary in order to maintain continuity of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Escape, daring do, and knigthood........2004-02-27

Flying colors begins where Ship of the Line left off. Hornblower is in a Spanish prison in Rosas after sacrificing his ship Sutherland by attacking and destroying an enemy fleet. Along with his loyal lieutenant Bush and his servant Brown, Hornblower is soon loaded on a carriage for the trip to Paris where he is to be hanged as a public display by Napoleon. But of course it's hard to hang a man when the author is on his side. The carriage breaks down in a snowstorm and as luck would have it there is a river and a boat nearby. Always a man of action Hornblower makes his escape and stumbles into the home of a left over royal sympathizer who helps his party to hide until spring when they can make their way down river and escape. In the French port, Hornblower assumes the identity of a Dutch officer, commandeers a captured English cutter, Witch of Endor, and a crew of slave laborers to sail out of the harbor under French noses. Despite his constant self doubt he returns triumphantly to England where he finds out that during his absence his wife died, his beloved Barbara's husband died, and instead of losing his rank for losing his ship he is knighted to the order of the bath for heroism (and politics). The detail of ships and sailing in the early 19th century make the Hornblower series must reading for any man who loves the sea.

5 out of 5 stars This is the REAL Tull book - forget the others.......2002-12-22

The author has compiled excellent information from the band and their record companies to produce the best reference guide on Jethro Tull. I'm not sure why people do not like real information that contradicts the common Tull misinformation, but the author has succeeded in taking the chance of presenting this data in a straightforward style. It's not a literary masterpiece, but this information cannot be presented any other way. After all, where else can you find out exactly when the band recorded or toured in the early days - especially since the dates and other information came from bassist Glenn Cornick's diaries? When such accurate sources like this are used in the book, you can't get any better. While one can nitpick here about accuracy without citing any examples, this is the only book that confirms concert dates by newspaper ads and reviews as well as going direct to the source. Great job.

2 out of 5 stars Far from the best.......2002-11-07

This might interest those unfamiliar with Tull, but for those who already know a bit, it's a disappointment.

Much of the information has previously appeared elsewhere or is simply well-known by fans, so readers gain little further insight about the band from this not particularly well-written repackaging. Unlike other books on the market, there is little direct input from Anderson & Co.

The one potential strength of the book is the mass of raw facts in the reference section. It is only fair to warn that its readability is similar to that of a telephone directory, but that's the nature of the material, not the author's fault. If readers really want all these dates, etc., they'll accept the format.

What is the author's fault is that this reference information is simply wrong, far too often. Prior information seems to have been unquestioningly reproduced, errors and all, so that even after readers pick away the obvious errors, the rest can't be relied on. Newspaper ads for concerts that were later cancelled, or memories that ex-members have later admitted were mis-remembered, have gone in apparently without checking.

If you don't need to know the minutiae, the other Tull biographies are more suited to you than this one. If you do want to know every tiny detail, go for something better researched.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the music, not this book.......2002-07-01

While it may contain every factoid known about Ian and the boys, this book is so difficult to actually read as to be virtually worthless. Sentences are often incomplete, not to mention thoughts or paragraphs, and there is a complete lack of cohesion.

If completely rewritten and given a decent editing it might be worthwhile, but that hasn't happened so do yourself a favor and get the remastered version of Stand Up instead.

                    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2001-08-30

I was surprised that a writer that first wrote books about Manfred Mann, the Yardbirds, Frank Zappa and the Zombies would give Tull such a fair and in depth treatment. I thought this book was better that David Rees "Minstrels in the Gallery" book.
There are a lot of photos, some I've never seen before, which is saying a lot from this long time fan of the band. Unfortunately all the photos on the inside are in black and white.
There is more detail here about other members of the band (particularly John Glascock and David Palmer) than anyplace else. The orientation is toward the entire band, not just a focus on Ian Anderson. That doesn't mean it is short on information about Ian. It delivers there too.
There is a reference section in the back that is packed with more detailed information about releases, appearances etc. than you could possibly want. If the answer to a question about the history of the band can't be found here, I doubt it will be found anywhere else.

4 out of 5 stars A Must For Tull Fans.......2000-08-11

Quite an enjoyable book that I always keep close by. I was very impressed with the range. Gig list, discography, and excellent 'behind the scenes' commentary regarding each album. The lack of color photos is a bummer, but that is my only complaint. I wish someone would put a book like this together on Genesis.

3 out of 5 stars Poorly handled bio of a great man.......2007-02-19

This books does not stack up well against the superlative Reach for the Sky. Lucas' link to Bader is via marriage to Bader's first wife's (Thelma)sister. Some good personal memories and insights, however, if you want the full, detailed story of Bader's remarkable life, stick to the Brickhill classic.

                            5 out of 5 stars Fab!.......2003-04-08

Flying Colours is an absolutly fab book- particually as it is written by one of Bader's closest of kin- his brother in law, Wing Commander P.B Laddie Lucas (who was married to Bader's wife's (Thelma) sister, Jill). Laddie had only known Bader from 1946, but they became the best of friends, and were very close from then on. This is a lovley, well written book, and well worth a read- and is also very informative on the perspectives of Fighter Command in WWII, and provides more in-depth info on Bader, which hasn't been revealed before!

                            Go out and read it!

3 out of 5 stars Too much detail, not enough dash.......2001-09-25

In two hundred and ninety interminable pages, Ladddie Lucas tells the extraordinary story of his friend Douglas Bader's life. Like a film with only one memorable character, the book is fine as long as Bader is on the page. Mr Lucas unfortunately devotes endless space to describe the machinations of various characters in the Air Ministry as well as the comings and goings of the faceless executives of Shell Oil, a company that Mr Lucas appears to work for, so fulsome is his praise. Paul Brickhill's original biography, Reach For the Sky does a much better job of telling the bare bones of Douglas Bader's amazing life. It is obvious that Mr Lucas has taken great pains not to simply reiterate the well-known facts, but by not doing so he seems to play down much of what Douglas Bader was about. The gripping nature of the subject saves this book from faltering completely but the flat, dull chapters about long-forgotten disputes in the corridors of power, and the somewhat turgid prose style left this reader underwhelmed.

5 out of 5 stars Douglas Bader is a true HERO - This book is not to be missed.......1997-04-01

Douglas Bader lost both of his legs in a terrible plane crash just before the start of WWII. Bader had to learn to walk again, with two aluminum legs. Bader was strong willed and refused to let his disability change him. Douglas Bader was determined to do his part in the War and convinced the RAF that he could fly again. Due to the absolute need for pilots, the RAF granted Bader permission to fly again after demonstrating his ability to indeed fly. Bader shortly became a top Ace for the RAF. You have to read this book if you love action and adventure.
