Book Description

Provides compelling evidence that creation myths from the dawn of civilization correspond to cutting edge astronomical discoveries

• Exposes the contradictions in current cosmological theory and offers a scientific basis for the ancient myths and esoteric lore that encode a theory of continuous creation

• By the scientist who was the first to disprove the Big Bang theory on the basis of observational data

Recent developments in theoretical physics, including systems theory and chaos theory, are challenging long-held mechanistic views of the universe. Many thinkers have speculated that the remnants of an ancient science survive today in mythology and esoteric lore, but until now the scientific basis for this belief has remained cloaked in mystery. Paul LaViolette reveals the remarkable parallels between the cutting edge of scientific thought and creation myths from the dawn of civilization. With a scientific sophistication rare among mythologists, LaViolette deciphers the forgotten cosmology of ancient lore in a groundbreaking scientific tour de force. In direct, nontechnical language, he shows how these myths encode a theory of cosmology in which matter is continually growing from seeds of order that emerge spontaneously from the surrounding subquantum chaos.

Exposing the contradictions that bedevil the big bang theory, LaViolette offers both the specialist and the general reader a controversial and highly stimulating critique of prevailing misconceptions about the seldom-questioned superiority of modern science over ancient cosmology. By restoring and reanimating this ancient scientific worldview, Genesis of the Cosmos leads us beyond the restrictive metaphors of modern science and into a new science for the 21st century.

2 out of 5 stars Mysticism through Phd-colored sunglasses.......2006-09-25

This book had lots of potential. Unfortunately the author could not get past his training to use language and an approach which is more accessible and more concise.

Example: "It may be significant that Geb and Nut are separated by Shu, for X and Y ultimately separate into a discrepant state because of the deviation-amplifying tendency of the 'Shu-Tefnut' reaction loop.

The author is attempting to correlate recent findings in physics with classical mystical systems from Egypt, and with Astrology, and the Tarot. But the writing style is methodical and cold and unnecessarily wordy and redundant. It is encouraging that science is attempting to make connections back to reality expressed in mythology. However science is lost in that it continues to attempt to make the reconnection using on the brain and missing the activity of the heart and body.

What is largely unforgivable is that the author is stumbling around primary concepts of his thesis without clearly stating it. The largest blarring omission is an emphasis on archetypes. There are indeed archetypal connections between physics and myth but the author has failed to inspire insights and remains brain-bound to his training and equations.

If you are looking for deeper insights between science and Egypt then 'Serpent in the Sky' by John Anthony West remains one of the best books on the subject. 'Temple of the Cosmos' by Jeremy Naydler is also a good book on Egyptian mythology.

5 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Book!!.......2006-01-31

When I picked up this book I was at first put off by LaViolette's style of writing. However, I gave him the benefit of the doubt by flipping ahead -- and I'm very glad I did. Because as I got more into it I began to realize what an amazing book this is. The author has broken the code -- by which I mean he has explained the deeper significance of the ancient Egyptian religion. In fact, this is the biggest breakthrough since Champollion decoded the Rosetta stone.

For this reason I'm very surprised this book has not received a lot more attention. It's a hidden gem. Prize it! This is an extremely valuable contribution to our understanding not just of the ancient world -- but much more -- allow me to explain.

LaViolette is a cutting edge physicist and he shows that the ancient Egyptian religion was all about advanced physics. It wasn't some crude form of paganism. The ancients had extremely sophisticated understanding of the nature of the cosmos. And the author does a fine job explaining this. The book is a fine companion to Thomas Brophy's book The Origin Map. It's now clear that everything we've been told about human history is wrong.

We don't have a clue where we came from -- but there is no longer any doubt that high civilizations did exist on planet earth in the distant past -- and we have very little knowledge of them.

What happened to them? Why did they disappear? LaViolette's book is a big step toward answering these questions.

    Book Description

By its very nature, scholarly writing lacks the freedom and rhetorical panache of other types of prose. Custom, propriety, and a quest for certainty hem the scholar in on all sides. But while it is necessarily formal, allusive, and accurate, scholarly writing does not have to be--nor should
it be--wooden, pedantic, and cryptic. A Handbook for Scholars helps scholars achieve the first set of characteristics without falling victim to the second.
Now available in a new revised edition, A Handbook for Scholars features the same comprehensive coverage of technical problems associated with scholarly writing that have made it so popular in the past, while offering for the first time complete compatibility with computer programs and word
processors. More "user friendly" than ever, this handbook places everything from the fundamentals of footnote preparation to the editing of galleys right at the scholar's fingertips. Mary-Claire van Leunen--who has twenty-five years of experience editing scholarly books and articles--offers a
contemporary rather than traditional approach to writing, stressing clarity over the convoluted "mumbo-jumbo" that so often muddles the meaning in scholarly works. Providing a wealth of examples along the way, she concentrates on new, simplfied forms of citation, quotation, and reference
acknowledgement that help writers concentrate on what they are saying rather than how they are saying it.
Besides addressing the technical aspects of scholarly writing, A Handbook for Scholars also provides lively direction on a variety of usage and style questions, covering such topics as word choice, writing introductions and abstracts, capitalization, paragraphing, and the scholar's old nemesis,
pedantry. It also offers advice on dealing with typists, editors, and printers, a handy "how to" section on creating academic CVs, and new chapters on computerized manuscript preparation.
Comprehensive, up-to-date, and absolutely indispensable, A Handbook for Scholars belongs on the desks of scholars and students of every discipline.

5 out of 5 stars Every scholar or technical writer should read this.......2006-08-25

When I was getting ready to write my disseration, my advisor strongly urged me to get this book. I'm really glad he did.

The book contains excellent advice on all aspects of scholarly writing. And there is not just advice on how to write, but on numerous ethical issues, like how much you can quote without marking it as a quotion, and can you cite references you haven't actually looked up yourself, and what do you have to put in a curriculum vitae.

She tells you how to properly cite every imaginable source: Corporate publications with no author, goverment documents, the US Constituion, the Bible, ancient documents found in museums, etc.

Styles have changed a bit since the 1st edition (the one I'm actually reporting on). In that edition she says you can't use use citations as nouns, as in "These results conflict with those reported in [Jones98]." However, this usage is very common. I don't know what the newer edition says on this issue.

5 out of 5 stars Read it before you start your writing.......2000-04-28

This handbook has every rule you would like to know for your writing (article, book, thesis, even your curriculum vitae), as a scholar, I have to say.

This book doesn't deal with "how you should write your ideas," but with your questions about style, capitalization, references in foreign languages, and so on.

For Spanish speakers: La mayoría de las reglas de este libro pueden ser fácilmente "traducidas" a nuestro idioma (excepto, por supuesto, aquellas acerca de comillas).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent aid in positioning your mind to write well........1999-06-10

If you're a scholar, and are looking for something after Strunk and White, this is it. It is entertaining reading while pumping your brain full of all those little hidden rules of style that noone ever taught you.

Critics debate Plath's value as a writer: detractors call her overly sentimental, while admirers argue that she engendered whole movements of women's poetry. The works studied in this volume include The Bell Jar, A Fine White Flying Myth, and But I Have a Self to Recover.

This title, Sylvia Plath, part of Chelsea House Publishers' Modern Critical Views series, examines the major works of Sylvia Plath through full-length critical essays by expert literary critics. In addition, this title features a short biography on Sylvia Plath, a chronology of the author's life, and an introductory essay written by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University.

5 out of 5 stars A lucid, compelling, and precise biography.......2004-07-14

Peter Steinberg's new biography charts Sylvia Plath's tumultous career in moving prose. His narrative demonstrates precision and is informed by the recent landmarks in Plath scholarship. His own passion for Plath's writing and travels to Plath sites lend a significant dimension to his descriptions of the places and events that inspired some of Plath's most famous poems. I think this book will be a welcome addition to high school reading lists and will inspire students to explore Plath's poetry.

5 out of 5 stars New biography with new facts.......2004-06-28

I am the author of this book, for which Linda Wagner-Marting graciouslessly wrote the Foreword. This new biography of Plath, the first to appear since the early 1990s, presents Plath the poet and Plath the person as inseparable. It's about her writing life.

The mini-review Amazon has is for the Harold Bloom collection of essays published in the late 1980s. I certainly hope that they fix this in order to prevent confusion and/or slower sales.

        Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars A superb analysis and insight into the life of Ernest Hemingway..........2006-10-02

Harold Bloom has been one of the most respected literary critics of the 20th century. This book is not a capitalization of the life of Hemingway (as declared in a prior review), it is unique insight into the writer and the man. The edited articles composing the book were created by some of the most respected scholars, journalists, critics, and authors of his era. Mr. Bloom has culled through thousands of written pieces and has selected the best works to best exemplifiy Hemingway, not only in his accomplishments and works, but also his thought process and methodology to create his masterpieces. Some of these essays are critical reviews, not just kudos in praise of Hemingway's works. Although I have been a Hemingway fan for over 50 years, I discovered in this book many new insights into one of the greatest and respected authors of the 20th Century.

Bloom is the editor of this book of essays concerning the poetry of John Milton. Students or casual readers of the book will both profit from and enjoy them. Milton was a great poet, and should be understood on his on ground, on his on terms, and the essays will facilitate such understanding.

Please do read Abdiel Agonistes review, but keep in mind that his view is biased by his religious beliefs; and his misconceptions of great poets such as Whitman and Goethe as well as his scurrilous (and discredited) view of Modernism should be taken with a grain of salt.

              Book Description

This handy and useful guide offers advice in the areas writers most frequently need help: research writing, documentation, the writing process, grammar, punctuation and mechanics. Anson, Schwegler and Muth encourage writers to adjust their writing style according to the needs of their audience and place an emphasis on practical strategies that you can employ immediately in your work. Their unique "Read/Recognize/Revise" approach to grammar demonstrates how to identify errors and provides strategies for avoiding these errors in your own writing.

A complete section of the book offers thorough coverage of how to do research, both in the library and online. Readers will find documentation of all of the important documentary styles-MLA, APA, CMS and CSE-all of which provide the most up-to-date guidelines for citing online sources.
