Learning by EXAMPLES.......2007-01-13
Well written descriptions; and well thought-out examples are given when needed. I have both volumes and they have been a great resource to me while developing Modelling Software. Multiple Author's contributions have resulted in a little overlapping, but there was one benefit to this
- seeing adapted forms of the same formula. I also like the book: "The Cambridge Handbook of Physics Formulas (230 pages)" which is 40 years newer. But have found myself referring this two-volume-set the most recently (totaling 741 pages) because: more fields & cross-fields are covered, great examples, smaller hand-held size, jammed packed prerequisite math formulas & data (153 pages) in first four chapters including: Pre/Post Calculus, Fourier Series, Green Function, Vectors, Tensors, etc. (good brush up - been out of college few years) Also locating a particular formula is quick because of the Large Detailed Split-page Contents at beginning of both volumes (20 pages each) and also helpful - chapter names are printed on both covers.

(10) Heat and Thermodynamics (11) Statistics Mechanics
(12) Kinetic Theory of Gases: Viscosity, Thermal Conduction, and diffusion
(13) Electromagnetic Theory (14) Electronics (15) Sound and Acoustics
Fundamental Formulas of Physics Volume Two
Page 365 to Page 741. (Chapter 16 to Chapter 31)
(16) Geometrical Optics (17) Physical Optics (18) Electron Optics

AS OF THIS WRITING: Volume Two doesn't show up in all AMAZON search results. But Volume Two does have it's own AMAZON PAGE: From Volume One Page look for "other editions" or "also available in (paperback or any option given)" Or Type the exact phase "Fundamental Formulas of Physics, Vol. 2" and you will go directly to it.
A worthy book for physics, by any standards........1999-01-15
A great resource for any hard-core science cirriculum. This book may not be a page-turner for some; however, it does provide invaluable information and is an easy to understand compliment to most physics classes.

Still alive and well.......2006-04-01
More than thirty years ago, when I was an engineering student, my physics "Bible" was Halliday & Resnick, Physics for Students of Science and Engineering, 1st Edition. This is a book that has aged gracefully. While the basic physics concepts were retained, the examples have been updated in each revision to keep up with the technology advances. Now in its seventh edition since Walker started to collaborate with the previous authors, it is still one of the most enjoyable readings in elementary physics. I recommend it without reservation.

Book Description
The four-volume treatment Modern Crystallography presents an encyclopaedic exposition of problems concerned with the structure of crystals, their growth and properties. Fundamentals of Crystals, the first volume, deals in a tutorial style with the general characteristics of crystalline matter, the principles of crystallography and its theoretical basis, the theory of symmetry, and the methods for analyzing the atomic structure of crystals. The shapes and the 3-dimensional structures are treated. This text also outlines the basis of the diffraction methods used for investigating crystal structures.
Product Description
The front cover is an image by Eric J. Heller depicting electron flow over a microscopically bumpy surface. The paths of the 100,000 electrons begin at the upper right but branch and fold back on one another in a surprising pattern as they spread toward the lower left. Electron flow is the subject of several chapters in this book and is especially important in the discussion of electric sparks. Some sparks. Some sparks are amusing, such as those generated when someone chomps down on a wintergreen LifeSaver-the brief blue glow that illuminates the mouth can be seen in a dark room (Chapter 21.) Other sparks are quite dangerous, such as those in electrostatic discharges that can accidental cause airborne dust to explode (Chapter 25). Take Your Seat-The Show's About To Begin! This 8th edition of Fundamentals of Physics includes hundreds of items about curious effects in the everyday world, written in the spirit of Jearl Walker's The Flying Circus of Physics. NOT a beginner's book.......2005-10-04
The first physics course I've ever taken used this very textbook. If you are about to be in the same boat as I was, let me tell you this: this is NOT a good introductory physics text. If you're not one of the kids who took AP Physics in high school, you will probably struggle with this book unless you have a very amazing professor.
Most of the formulas are given as "this is the general formula, and here's how we derive the other formulas from this". There's very little explanation involved with concepts, and when the author tries they are extremely hazy. This book apparently assumes that you've learned every concept before, and that you only need a brief overview and a table of formulas.
Not to completely bash this book - far from it. Formulas are listed in an organized and comprehensive fashion, and useful derivations are given also. If I need to look up a physics formula, this is the book I use as it's actually faster than sifting through Google. Beware, though, if this is your first endeavour into the world of physics.
What a Struggle.......2005-03-20
I'm using this book for a distance learning course in physics. I suspect it was not written for distance learning. I often find it hard to relate the answers to chapter problems to the explanations in the text. I also have a copy of Cutnell & Johnson's Physics 6th edition. The thinking in the latter is a lot easier to follow.
pretty good, beginners may need extra help with it.......2004-08-20
i'm using this book as a main source for preparing for the physics GRE exam, and i'm finding that it is getting me up to speed for the exam. my previous academic background is actually math/german/finance, but i can tell you that the math background is what makes working with this book fairly successful. i'm pretty much a sucker for big, pretty books anyway, but i really can tell that this one is definitely helping me learn basic physics- fairly good examples, lots of problems, and interesting introductions to each chapter to captivate your attention and motivate you to continue studying. if you're a freshman taking using this book for a course, i would suggest you consult your professor regularly and get help whenever something is not quite clear- it's probably a royal pain in the neck to take physics I/II and calc concurrently, so i can totally understand those of you without the complete math background having trouble with this material- i know i did 20 years ago as an undergrad, and it made me really dislike physics at that time. i don't know what calc classes are like these days, but i would strongly recommend at least 3 semesters of calculus before embarking on a course that uses this book- it'll make your learning experience much more intense, and you'll get a lot more from the book and will be able to appreciate it much more. Oh, and you may just want to try and order the international edition from abroad (Europe, for example)- it's about $100 less than the U.S. price and still has the same content!
Highly overrated.......2004-07-04
Alright, so of course this is the book required by just about every college in the country these days in their introductory physics courses---well, it shouldn't be. The authors certainly provide mathematical motivation for the concepts they cover, but certainly don't give adequate real-world motivation for concepts. Oh yeah, so, as one idiot reviewer who thinks he's some kind of precocious student said, this book helped him and his high school buddies get fives on the AP Test---WELL BIG DEAL IDIOT!!! GOOD FOR YOU!! I only managed to do that in my freshman year of highschool so I guess it must be really hard or something--*cough* Well, in the real world of people who actually know anything about physics or math or any field, getting a five on the AP exam in highschool isn't anything special. Basically, this book will prepare you to pass exams and standardized tests--it won't give you understanding. For that, go somewhere worthwhile---for example, the Feynman Lectures on Physics, all three volumes of which cost about half as much as Halliday and Resnick's book.
is this a money-making gimmick or what?.......2004-05-07
Our physics department decided to switch to this book last year, and I have been trying to figure out which edition to buy.. "extended enhanced problem edition", "extended", "enhanced"? How about throwing in a student's companion text that contains "chapter extensions?"? What about getting the right Solutions manual? only 30% of the solutions are in it? And now I just found out they have published (another?) new 7th edition which no doubt will have a brand new array of essential supplements and extensions. Why all these editions and supplements?
Book Description
Now in Paper! The Road to Science Fiction is a six-volume anthology of science fiction that covers the development of science fiction from its earliest prototypes in the Sumerian Gilgamesh and the Greek epics to approximately 1990. Created originally to provide anthologies for use in classes, these volumes have become mass-market sellers as well, since they are not only a source of outstanding stories but also explain what constitutes science fiction, how it developed and the contribution the authors and the stories have made to the evolution of science fiction. Cloth edition previously published in 1979.
Book Description
Gilgamesh is a rich, spare, and evocative novel of encounters and escapes, of friendship and love, of loss and acceptance, a debut that marks the emergence of a world-class talent. It is 1937, and the modern world is waiting to erupt. On a farm in rural Australia, seventeen-year-old Edith lives with her mother and her sister, Frances. One afternoon two men, her English cousin Leopold and his Armenian friend Aram, arrive-taking the long way home from an archaeological dig in Iraq-to captivate Edith with tales of a world far beyond the narrow horizon of her small town of Nunderup. One such story is the epic of Gilgamesh, the ancient Mesopotamian king who traveled the world in search of eternal life. Two years later, in 1939, Edith and her young son, Jim, set off on their own journey, to Soviet Armenia, where they are trapped by the outbreak of war. Rich, spare, and evocative, Gilgamesh won The Age Book of the Year Award for Fiction and was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award alongside Richard Flanagan's
Customer Reviews:
A thoughful really well written novel.......2005-03-01
A rather original and well written novel. In addition it kept my attention to the very end. One can complain about unlikely plot elements that move the story along -but it has a reality to it not found in many novels. It's the only book by the author in Amazon. I would look forward to additional works by her.
Didn't really grab me.......2004-11-20
I read this book because it was selected by my local book club. I kept reading it because I kept hoping it was going to get better, but it just never really grabbed my imagination. Yes, it was well written and I could picture a lot of the places and people, but I never got totally involved with the characters and the plot.
A wonderfully crafted novel.......2004-04-14
Gilgamesh: A Novel (winner of the 2002 Age Book of the Year award) is a wonderfully crafted novel by Joan London which is adroitly narrated by Deidre Rubenstein in this complete and unabridged audiobook version of this award winning saga. Drawing upon ancient myths to put together a hero's story of struggle, battles, the never ending search for acceptance, and finally his return home, Gilgamesh: A Novel is a profound and memorably entertaining "theatre of the mind" experience. Flawlessly produced, Gilgamesh: A Novel is a highly recommended addition to community library audiobook collections.
A Journey Back To Where It Started.......2004-03-12
Gilgamesh has the feel of an elongated short story. At the center is Edith,a young girl living in Australia in 1937. An extended stay from her cousin Leopold and his Armenian friend Aram brings life to Edith in unexpected ways. Their departure sets off her own longing, and it's not long before she begins a journey that will take her to Soviet Armenia and eventually back. I wish I would've had the time to devour this in one sitting. Unfortunately the imapct of the novel was lost slightly because of the time it took me to finish. Still,it's a well written and lovely story.
COMPANIONSHIP AND QUESTS.......2003-10-28
You know the relationship between wounded soldier Frank and young nurse Ada is not very promising when the narrator writes "They should really never have met." The time is right after the end of World War I and Ada longs for a place where there is no war. Frank says there is such a place. His homeland, Australia. Promising her a paradise of honey Edenic bliss, they marry and Ada and him end up in the middle of nowhere in the bush as part of a group settlement, which is promised a certain parcel of land if they clear it and build houses. As the years go by, Ada becomes more and more depressed by the rough living, realizing that she was tricked into coming but not having the strength to leave. Years later after an unhappy marriage, the dying Frank wonders what the point of it was and thinks that perhaps it will "work itself out in the following generations."
That's what this book is really about. Frank and Ada's two daughters, Edith and Frances. Growing up in the wilds they are relatively free of outside sources of information as they grow into young women, until their cousin Leopold, an archealogist, shows up with his Armenian friend, Aram. They open up a world beyond the bush and cause Edith to long for another place and Frances to retreat into fear. They soon leave, but something has changed with Edith. She is pregnant, and she will feel compelled to seek out the father of her child, no matter what the danger or the foreign country she must travel to.
Gilgamesh was a fine novel. The title comes from the fact that Leopold and Aram, two bosom buddies, much as Gilgamesh and Enkidu are in the ancient myth, tell the story to the two girls. What is a book except a quest for companionship? Everyone in this novel seems to be looking for someone to share life with, whether in the end, that is attainable, is something else again. The characters here, well, most of them, seem to be wanderlust stricken souls who cannot exactly figure out what it is they are missing. To answer this craving, they simply move. After reading this book, I felt as though I had went on a long journey. There's a real feeling of depth and soul-searching you can sense in the author. Wow, great book. I have nothing negative to say about it.

NEVER GROW OLD
Customer Reviews:
Excellent story that is as timeless as Brian Trent's new novel!.......2007-09-18
Brian Trent really captures the story of Gilgamesh and re-creates a world so believable that the novel draws in the reader. After reading the first chapter I was so involved in the story that I actually called out of work to finish the novel. Brian Trent's newest novel may yet prove that this writer is a true intellect of history that even a story thousands of years old makes the reader feel as if the epic story of Gilgamesh happened only yesterday. I hope more people buy this book and become lost in the story of Gilgamesh.
a timeless story, beautifully written.......2007-07-02
This is a beautifully written and timeless novel of a young man growing into his role as king. Thoroughly absorbed by the lives of the main character, his friends, and his enemies, the reader faces the emotions and experiences common to all humanity, including pride, forgiveness, power, helplessness, rage, love, death, deceit, loyalty, bravery, terror, and humor. I laughed at, loved, feared, loathed, identified with and was shocked by the characters, in turn. The historical details are fascinating and add to one's sense of being drawn into the story. I literally could not put Never Grow Old down, and had it finished the day after I started it.
Mr. Trent hits the mark again.......2007-07-02
After recently finishing this book all I can say is WOW! From page one you get drawn into this tale. By the third chapter I was invested into plot lines that were just barely developing. As the plot lines formed and weaved in and out of one another I could not put this book down. Any fan of Historical Fiction would do themself a great service by snatching up this title.
