Book Description
This book is an abridged version of the two volumes "Convex Analysis and Minimization Algorithms I and II" (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften Vol. 305 and 306), which presented an introduction to the basic concepts in convex analysis and a study of convex minimization problems. The "backbone" of both volumes was extracted, some material deleted that was deemed too advanced for an introduction, or too closely related to numerical algorithms. Some exercises were included and finally the index has been considerably enriched.
The main motivation of the authors was to "light the entrance" of the monument Convex Analysis. This book is not a reference book to be kept on the shelf by experts who already know the building and can find their way through it; it is far more a book for the purpose of learning and teaching.

Book Description
The book is devoted to investigation of polynomial optimization problems, including Boolean problems which are the most important part of mathematical programming. It is shown that the methods of nondifferentiable optimization can be used for finding solutions of many classes of polynomial problems and for obtaining good dual estimates for optimal objective value in these problems.

Book Description
In the field of nondifferentiable nonconvex optimization, one of the most intensely investigated areas is that of optimization problems involving multivalued mappings in constraints or as the objective function. This book focuses on the tremendous development in the field that has taken place since the publication of the most recent volumes on the subject. The new topics studied include the formulation of optimality conditions using different kinds of generalized derivatives for set-valued mappings (such as, for example, the coderivative of Mordukhovich), the opening of new applications (e.g., the calibration of water supply systems), or the elaboration of new solution algorithms (e.g., smoothing methods).
The book is divided into three parts. The focus in the first part is on bilevel programming. The chapters in the second part contain investigations of mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints. The third part is on multivalued set-valued optimization. The chapters were written by outstanding experts in the areas of bilevel programming, mathematical programs with equilibrium (or complementarity) constraints (MPEC), and set-valued optimization problems.

Description:
This paper proposes a generalization of the proximal point algorithm using both penalty and trust-region concepts. Finite convergence is established while assuming the trust regions are of full dimension and never shrink to a single point. The approach is specialized to the cutting plane/column generation context. The resulting algorithm ensures convergence to a pair of primal and dual optimal solutions. Computational experiments carried over multi-depot vehicle scheduling instances show a great stabilizing and accelerating effect on the column generation method.

Book Description
'She wanted to swim far out, where no woman had swum before.' Kate Chopin was one of the most individual and adventurous of nineteenth-century american writers, whose fiction explored new and often startling territory. When her most famous story, The Awakening, was first published in 1899, it stunned readers with its frank portrayal of the inner word of Edna Pontellier, and its daring criticisms of the limits of marriage and motherhood. The subtle beauty of her writing was contrasted with her unwomanly and sordid subject-matter: Edna's rejection of her domestic role, and her passionate quest for spiritual, sexual, and artistic freedom. From her first stories, Chopin was interested in independent characters who challenged convention. This selection, freshly edited form the first printing of each text, enables readers to follow her unfolding career as she experimented with a broad range of writing, from tales for children to decadent fin-de siecle sketches. The Awakening is set alongside thirty-two short stories, illustrating the spectrum of the fiction from her first published stories to her 1898 secret masterpiece, 'The Storm'.

Overrated "Classic".......2007-05-30
I had been urged to read "The Awakening" several times, and had heard the word "classic" used to describe this book, so I thought I'd check it out. And while I understand that this must have been controversial when it first appeared, this same theme has been done much better by later writers. This is a BORING read. Not much happens. There isn't much conflict. I didn't like or sypathize with the main character, who comes off as selfish and cold. I would not recommend this, except in a study of feminist literature. The other stories are pretty much the same as the title story -- slow and plodding. I'm a fan of literature and theme, but this is light on both. Avoid this book.
Worth reading (The Awakening).......2003-09-21
This book is certainly not for the illiterate dime novel crowd. It is a story of one woman's struggle to find herself within the narrow confines of Victorian society. The situations and characters are well developed and some literacy in French is helpful but not required. If you read a bit about Kate Chopin the main character seems to be fairly autobiographical at least where rebellion from female conformity was concerned. The book is not a new idea, a person finding their wings and learning to fly. But the idea of a female doing this in Victorian society was brand new. The book was considered obscene and subversive at the time and that alone makes it worth reading.
a counterpoint to the last review.......2001-05-09
I got turned on to KC in college through one story--The Storm--and a little background on her (she wrote ahead of her time, was published and then forgotten until the 1960's Feminist Movement dug her up again). She became one of those authors I lodge in the back of my head to investigate later. I happened upon this wonderful book at the book tent at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest and grabbed it. The book gives a great introduction to her and her time. I was lucky enough to read The Awakening and some of her other short stories while staying at Grand Isle. She was and is a great writer. She wrote from a viewpoint that bucked the norms of her time---the late 1800's, she wrote of women who didnt fit the mold of mommy and wife. She wrote eloquently of an area, era, and culture that I love...New Orleans, Cajun Country, and Grand Isle amongst others. I dont write many reviews, but after reading the only other review for this book I felt a different opinion should be heard. She is a good read.
Yeah, yeah, A sense of SELF.......2001-04-21
I read this because It was listed as a "great book". Why, I don't know. Maybe at the time it was risque. Imagine the horror! A wife, not happy with just being a wife! Soon she begins to realize that she is an indvidual who has her own sexual desires, so she trapses around town with men while her husband is away on business. It was a labor to read this, but I always finish. You however- I would not reccomend picking this up.

The Events Which Occur due to Boredom.......2003-05-05
Ok, I think that every woman would like to consider herself a feminist in some sense of the word. This does not mean that we are all burning our bras or not shaving our pits but I think that we are all in agreement that we should appreciate books that helped spark the Women's Liberation Movement. I appreciated The Awakening but I did not like it. I have read this book twice, once in my English class and again to refresh my memory on the specifics for my English final. Maybe because I am nineteen years old I do not identify with Edna Pontellier. It appears to me that if there were some time capsule which could take Edna to 1960s suburbia she might resemble a housewife whose favorite pastime activity is sipping on wine coolers all day. I have read reviews of this book dating back to the time it was first published and I just want to clear up right now that my opinion of this book is not at all stemming from the controversy and narrow minded middle to upperclass white male views to which the book premiered. I feel that how Edna felt is simply how she felt there should not be some looming idea of the definition of motherhood or what makes up "a good wife" to prompt how you feel about her. However, while I can respect how Edna felt I do not feel that when she chose to defend herself or make an arguement it was stemming from anything with real substance. I hate writing this but I think that Edna took herself to seriously throughout that novel that by the end you might have felt some connection to her but it was only through Chopin's use of imagery.
Outstanding!.......1999-02-05
The Awakening will enthrall any one who has ever given themselves serious thought. It profoundly examines the context under which people live their lives. It gives complete meaning to "awakening" and invites the reader to more closely scrutinize their own life. Excellent and hauntingly beautiful.

THE AWAKENING AND OTHER SHORT STORIES.......2001-12-13
Kate Chopin is definitely best known for enveloping the concepts of women's desires, independence, and control of their lives in her writing. Her masterpiece, 'The Awakening', is one example of how she used these concepts. While this book was condemned during its time, it is a very intriguing read.
"The Awakening" received condemnation in 1899 because of its sexual openness. It has since been rediscovered and taught in classrooms across America. Chopin's power to almost foresee the future reveals her insight. She knew women were eventually going to realize they deserved equal rights, and she was going to do something to help fight for it, even if it didn't result in immediate recognition or gratification. Chopin wanted women to be heard.
Because of her perseverance and confidence, eventually her words were shared. The reader doesn't need to be a feminist to be able to enjoy "The Awakening." Indeed, it is centered on the process of a woman freeing herself from her responsibilities in order to focus on what she wants for herself; therefore, this theme can and should be compelling and motivational to both males and females. It is for these reasons "The Awakening" should be celebrated and appreciated by people of any race, age, gender or background.
A classic story defining the struggle for identity........1998-05-18
Kate Chopin's novel was not widely appreciated until the women's movement rescued it from publishing oblivion. The story of Edna Pontillier's journey to discover herself is one that all women would probably enjoy-- whether they can identify with Edna or whether they are completely dissimilar. Whatever your final opinion about the story's outcome, this novel will spark thought, discussion, and awakenings of many kinds. Do not pass this book up.

A woman seeks love and the fulfillment of her essential nature outside of her stuffy, middle-class marriage. This book shocked the readers of 1899 and paved the way for the modern novel. Three 90-minute cassettes and one 60.

A minor masterpiece, The Awakening was a scandalous book when it arrived from the turn-of-the-century presses. With a heroine who found her husband dull, married life dreary and confining, and motherhood to be bondage, this revolutionary book is still relevant to many.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Modern Woman of 19th Century [50].......2007-09-24
Some marriages do not work - sometimes they commence well enough but people drift apart. In this book, the protagonist, Edna Pontellier, watches here marriage dissipate for nontraditional reasons - ultimately ending with traditional tragedy.
None of the classic reasons for failed marriage exist. Husband was not violent toward her. He was not demanding upon her. In fact, he granted her as much slack as any man of that time period would ever have allowed. He was a good man. "As the devoted wife of a man who worshiped her, she felt she would take her place with a certain dignity in the world of realty, closing the portals forever behind her upon the realm of romance or dreams."
Like "Wide Sargasso Sea" this entails the life off continental United States and customs of those identified as Creole. Unlike Sargasso's emotionally abused wife, Antoinette, Edna is 28, turning 29, and is just . . . just . . . very confused. Her 40-year old husband seeks to aid her in this time of maturation, but is really helpless. Beautiful and unsure of her previous decision to marry, she is wooed by others - all knowing that societal customs will not allow her to engage in illicit passion unless she makes a rash decision to leave her anointed responsibilities to her children and husband. What will she do when her lover, Robert, returns? "Do? Nothing, except feel glad and happy to be alive." But is this enough for Robert? Is it enough for her?
Of course not. "[S]he felt the old ennui overtaking her: the hopelessness which so often assailed her, which came upon her like an obsession, like something extraneous, independent of volition." Her life became a lingering heart-breaking bore.
She is neither free nor in servitude. She is neither chattel of; nor an equal to her husband. She is a prisoner of her emotions, not of societal constraints. She lives in a relatively free society, and is permitted to roam about relatively freely. But, she is not happy with this. Little can engage her sensibilities in this period of malaise which is constantly questioned by hormonal and philosophical desires. She wants a divorce although her husband did nothing wrong. But, in her days - the 19h century - divorce was not an alternative. Moreover, her husband and her society are Catholic.
So she had to lead the remainder of her life with self-hatred - about how she got where she is and where she is going with what she has. She reasons, "I am no longer one of Mr. Pontellier's possessions to dispose of or not. I give myself where I choose." And, so she shows the most demanding act of volition: suicide.
My Bantam edition came with a forward by Pulitizer-winning author Marilynne Robinson ("Housekeeping" and "Gilead") who wrote, "`The Awakening' should be read as a meditation on the experimental basis of romantic consciousness, the sense that the world has a numinous life that is addressed to human perceptions and that it has a meaning humankind is competent to interpret. . ." Robinson is correct, and this book is truly generations ahead of its time in addressing this extremely undiscussed topic of female self-recognition against the male's world of control.
A person searching for meaning is NOT feminism.......2007-08-13
I purchased this book for my son's AP lit class. He read it and described Edna as an angry woman not happy with her life. I wondered how that made it a book about feminism and decided to read it. Now that I am done, I feel very sad for Edna. Given the description of Edna she could have depression. She loves her children, but not always...possibly postpartum depression that is continually getting worse. I believe the things Edna questions are not limited to women. I imagine many men of that time and now get married because it is the thing to do. Pursue jobs they do not like, but must take. Have children because that is what is expected. I believe Chopin is questioning societal expections of her time for both men and women. Clearly Leonce is floundering. The rug has been pulled out from under him. He was following the plan and now it has changed. No, this is NOT a book about feminism. This is about an individuals struggle to find him or herself. About accepting responsibility or being selfish. I can't wait to read the book that is paired with this for his AP class: Memoirs of a Geisha.
A 190 page book that felt like 400.......2007-07-10
Among so many lengthy reviews, allow me to make this pithy with no apology: It is clear to me that this is considered an American classic not for any particular merit in Chopin's writing but solely in the controversy that surrounded its publication. If you're looking for a rich and stirring piece of American literature, keep looking.
A cutting edge novel for its time.......2007-06-27
If you enjoy novels that address the social norms and conventions of a given time period, this is one you won't want to miss. I was first introduced to this book as a sophomore in college in my "Women Writers of the 20th Century" English class. Kate Chopin masterfully paints a picture of a woman desperately seeking more in her life; a woman who doesn't "fit the mold" of societal conventions at the turn of the 20th century. Chopin slowly builds Edna Pontellier bit by bit, painstakingly peeling away at the layers and the facades this woman has been taught to put on--and which her character throws off with fancy free and terrible heartache almost simultaneously. Edna is a flawed heroine, but perhaps that is why the reader becomes entranced with her. There is a little of Edna Pontellier in all of us--seeking the essence of life; seeking love and freedom.
Ahead of her time.......2007-06-13
Kate Chopin's The Awakening gives an insightful look into the life of a woman trapped in a marriage and a life that doesn't befit her. The characters are very well done -- not all of them are deep, but for good reason. Chopin's writing style never ceases to amaze. I've read this book three or four times, and it never loses its power, its impact. There are themes throughout that give the story a deeper meaning. When you read it, think about the elderly widow and what she represents, and the young lovers. Everything means something, and it is all tied together very well. It's the best book I've ever read. I simply love it.

Book Description
Around the turn of the century, the United States was still experiencing the mass migration of millions of Jews and other immigrants escaping oppression and poverty in Europe. Set against this historical backdrop, author Louis Harap examines the development of the Jewish American, as both writer and character, from 1900 to the 1950s. Creative Awakening traces fifty years' development of Jewish American fiction, poetry and humor, as it analyzes fictional portrayals of Jews themselves.
