Book Description
Einstein's Dreams meets Tuesdays with Morrie in Leonard Mlodinow's touching memoir about his mentor, the brilliant physicist Richard Feynman. As a young physicist, Leonard Mlodinow looked for guidance from his mentor, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman. Drawing on transcripts from their meetings during their time together at Cal Tech, Mlodinow shares Feynman's provocative thoughts and observations. At once a moving portrait of a friendship and an affecting account of Feynman's final, creative years, FEYNMAN'S RAINBOW celebrates the inspiring legacy of one of the greatest thinkers of our time.

Feynman's Rainbow.......2007-07-29
EXCELLENT!!! Gives the layman a look inside the world of Physics research, while presenting a life-lesson theme that transcends science. A great read for both science and non-science readers. I'm a Physics teacher, and the reason I love this book has absolutely NOTHING to do with science. I'm making it required reading for my Physics classes!!
Feynman as seen by a peer.......2007-05-18
Written by a physicist who spent a year in an office on the same floor as Feynman and Murray Gell-Man, this book provides yet another view of Feynman and the love-hate relationship that existed between him and Gell-Man, two of the finest physicists of the 20th Century. It is interesting to compare this view with the one provided by the letters collected by his daughter, Michelle, Perfectly Reasonable Deviations From The Beaten Track: The Letters Of Richard P. Feynman and the excellent, but hard to find, collection of essays written by other peers."Most of the Good Stuff:" Memories of Richard Feynman.
Feynman on Life and the Joy of Physics.......2007-03-16
Richard Feynman and Gell-Man Murray are two towering figures in 20th Century Physics. The book begins with the writer's arrival at Caltech as a fresh postdoc with a PhD from Berkeley in the 1980s. In this little autobiographical book, the author writes about his experiences at Caltech focusing on his interactions with Feynman and Murray - their characters and rivalry. Physics take a back seat in this book. Instead, the author attempts to tell a very human (and sometimes sad) story about himself, Feynman and Murray. I find this book interesting for two reasons. First, the author shares his experience about the insecurities that many PhD graduates have about their ability to do meaningful research work after the PhD (especially when one's PhD work was considered important enough to land a Caltech postdoc). Second, it provides a few glimpses of what Feynman and Murray were like at close range - human beings observed on a daily basis (and at their natural habitat). Overall, I cannot help but get the feeling that Feynman comes across as a more 'humane' person than Murray in this book. The writer doesn't apologize for his bias towards Feynman and he does gives examples of Murray's generosity (e.g. his support and belief on Schwartz who toiled for years with the String Theory). He repeatedly emphasizes on the different styles and outlook (life philosophy) of Feynman and Murray. Feynman is more interested in interesting problems and derives tremendous joy from doing physics. Murray, the smart one who revels in demonstrating his diverse knowledge. At the end, the writer favors Feynman's approach to life partly because of his own interests and inclination - towards writing. For it was Feynman who advocated the pursuit of things that truly brings joy. This is a book that would interest readers who enjoy reading about the lives of eminent scientists especially Feynman.
Thought on Feynman's Rainbow.......2006-12-04
I recently read the book Feynman's Rainbow. I really enjoyed this book and I thought it was very interesting. I learned about quantum chromodynamics and the electromagnetic force. I alo learned about Murray Gell-mann's ideas about quarks. I also learned about Joyhn Schawartz's string theory and the thoughts that Richard Feynman had on them. Leonard Mlodinow had an interesting encouter with Richard Feynman while they were both faculty at Caltech. The author used very personal experiences to tell his story of his experience at Caltech. The book keeps the reader engaged and I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in physics or Richard Feynman.

Honest, Entertaining, and Informative.......2006-05-25
Because this book flows like a well-paced novel, I was easily able to finish it in one day (something I almost never do).
In addition to being an excellent storyteller, Mlodinow is very honest and candid in a way that I found sincere and endearing. He describes well the difficulties faced by a talented and promising young adult trying to form his worldview and choose his life/career goals and direction. Many people, not just budding physicists, will be able to relate to this, and indeed I think that is the main value of the book.
In the course of the book, he presents some physics discussions and reflections on the philosophy of science/physics, and of course he also provides some information about Feynman (and Gell-Mann), but none of this is in great depth, so it's best regarded as "bonus" material.
Overall, I can highly recommend this book to anyone with a little background in modern physics, and some familiarity with Feynman and Gell-Mann's biographies and work. The book is very enjoyably written, so reading it is time well spent. I enjoyed the book so much that I will be checking out Mlodinow's other books also.
Product Description
Nobel Prize-winner Richard Feynman was not only a great scientist and a great teacher, but also an idiosyncratic individual whose penetrating wit illuminated the world for all who came in contact with him, either in person or in his books. FEYNMAN'S RAINBOW recounts the relationship between Feynman and Mlodinow, an intimidated young physicist who comes to Caltech during Feynman's last years and makes the elder man his mentor. The memoir gives readers an intimate look at Feynman's scientific imagination and his rivalry with fellow Nobel laureate Murray Gell-Mann. Mlodinow shows how Feynman helped him to find and nourish his own creativity, and includes extensive transcripts of their conversations, which roam over physics, art, love, happiness, and God. FEYNMAN'S RAINBOW is a moving journey of the heart and mind.
Book Description
The First Men on the Moon offers a lively definitive account of the Apollo 11 mission based on the in-flight transcripts post-flight debriefing, with illustrative contextual pictures, especially featuring recent scans of the original Hasselblad film and including conversations among the crew in the spacecraft that were not transmitted. The introductory chapters review the motivation to land on the Moon by the end of the 1960s, the development of the Saturn V rocket and the Apollo spacecraft as the means of doing so, the selection of potential landing sites, the precursor missions, and the backgrounds of the three men who were to fly Apollo 11. The final chapters will discuss what was learned of the moonrocks, and review the follow-on missions. In addition to having many ‘small’ in-line black-and-white illustrations with the text running around them, the book features the high-resolution scans recently produced by NASA from the original Hasselblad film, reproduced in a substantial color section. David Harland's impressive expertise in, and considerable experience wriring about, the Moon landings shines through and seemlessly unites the myriad details
From the reviews of Harland's Exploring the Moon:
"A detailed guide to what the astronauts did during their stays on the lunar surface. Walk(s) the reader through the prospecting excursions and then incorporate(s) decades of subsequent analysis to put the explorations of dust, rocks, craters, and rilles into geologic context."
SKY & TELESCOPE
"Very well illustrated… All aficionados of the Apollo program will find much to appreciate in [this book].”
"…this is an interesting account of one of the most extraordinary decades in history…a very different book. David Harland probably knows more about the nuts and bolts of the Russian and American space programs than any other author and it shows.”

The Perfect Beginners Guide.......2007-09-12
If you are new to the Apollo programme, and want a concise chronological account of the Apollo 11 mission, here's the perfect book.
The story is all here: Astronaut biographies, preparations, launch, lunar traverse, orbit, landing, ascent, and recovery. The beauty of this book is the narrative is a mixture of the authors research, NASA transcripts, and historical archives.
There is liberal use of b&w and colour photographs, and diagrams from NASA flight plans.
All this added together gives the reader the mission from the more important viewpoints, and you can imagine yourself right in the middle of all the unfolding drama.
Highly recommended.
Excellent condition.......2007-09-04
This book was in excellent condition. I gave it as a gift. Delivery was prompt.
An excellent account of Apollo 11.......2007-06-12
I worked on the Apollo 11 launch at Kennedy and therefore have a more than passing interest in the subject. This is the first book I have found that is (as far as I can tell) technically perfect. I was sorry when I ran out of book. I especially enjoyed the way Harland included the on-board voice transcripts interspersed with his explanations of what was going on. Lots of good photos and explanatory diagrams. I would rate this 10 stars if it were possible.
Same Story base, new pictures and information.......2007-03-30
My review is similar, in part, to the first reviewee from California. I had seen this one listed but did not purchase it immediatley. I read and collect books on the Mercury to Apollo space program but I had to weigh the price-to-new-presentation format factor of this book before deciding to aquire it.
The first review was enough to make me want to get it and add it to my collection. Some new pictures, in color, were good to see. (Also noted was the fact that there are pictures of Neil Armstrong on the moon. This seems to be mis-represented in other books. The two pictures are of him in the background and not a "tourist" style shot.)
What I liked the most was the commentary between the astronauts and Mission Control. I had not read as complete of a dialoge from lift off to splash down as I had in this book. This type of material may have been covered in other books that I have not yet discovered or read, such as the NASA Mission Report book series by Robert Goodwin.
I enjoyed the layout and informative interpretation of the material. I thought that it was another good version of an "old" story.
The latest, but is it the greatest?.......2006-12-15
I just picked this one up at the book store yesterday, so have not yet finished reading it. Since nobody else has yet reviewed this book, I'll volunteer to go first to make a few first observation comments.
First, this new book is quite factual and chronologically accurate. It is also very well organized, with an uncustomary, but fully detailed ToC. Atypical for such books, it has LOTS of full page photos, and illustrative figures (mostly B&W, but one whole section devoted to color of this Apollo mission). Many of the pictures are unusual in that I have yet to see them published elsewhere in similar books on the same subject. For this reason alone I recommend this new book by David Harland, "The First Men on the Moon: The Story of Apollo 11".
I'm sure it is somewhat repetitive of other books on this and other Apollo Moon Missions, but still appears much more focused on this specific amazing and most historic spaceflight. It is seemingly much more technically detailed with factual information as well. The bibliography listed references is impressive, so the author must have thoroughly researched Apollo 11 in preparing this book.
I have read (and reviewed on this website) several other excellent books on Project Apollo, particularly those written by the Astronauts and key players within Mission Control, plus watched all the currently available (DVD) videos as well. This one may turn out to surpass all other sources of information, including NASA's archives, with respect to the first Moon landing. However, I will have to return to update my review at a future date, after reading it to completion.
So far, the only criticism I have of this and other related space exploration books published by Springer Praxis, is that they are quite expensive, especially in paperback. Nevetheless, my first impression is you get what you pay for, and though paperback, this book just may DELIVER on its lofty price as an authoritative and exhaustive work, infused with much technical (and accurate) information, yet easy to read. Certainly, the wealth of picture content serves a useful purpose in complementing the actual reading material, so that it becomes more meaningful and interesting to the average reader, non-rocket science types, such as myself.
Stay tuned . . .

Apollo-11 guide is a great launcher!.......2007-04-26
Author Godwin has accomplished a lot with his new 'pocket' guide series.
Apollo Eleven has been seen by so many and usually with the same historic images. But this approach differs from others as it takes the great, lost artistic images from North American Rockwell, Grumman, and NASA combining them with information from the various press kits and mission reports, he magically takes the reader along on the epic journey of Mans' first landing on the Moon. Just in time for the anniversary. Not only a great companion to Tom Hank's "Magnificent Desolation"- but a must read for anyone who wants to know what Apollo was all about.
The Perfect Apollo Introduction.......2007-04-09
If you are a real space advocate or brand new to the subject, this is the perfect book for you. The book gives a brief history of rocketry up to the Apollo program. It then summarizes how the Americans intended to travel to the moon, and what was done on the Apollo flights leading up to Apollo 11. The reader is introduced to such concepts as lunar ascent, lunar descent, orbital rendezvous, TLI, TLE, and the EVA. If these terms seem like a foreign language to you, then read this book, because these terms and more are easily explained. With great diagrams of equipment and processes, as well as actual color pictures taken during the historic Apollo 11 mission, this simple little guide will leave the reader with a complete understanding of why this was one of the most important events in human history.
A big little book on Apollo 11.......2007-03-15
I must admit that I purchased this book because I am an Apollo 11 completist and I liked the look and feel of the book. When I read it, I was pleasantly surprised. Don't let its diminutive size fool you. The book covers the Apollo 11 story better than many tomes five times its size. Godwin's text is easy to read and straight-forward. An adequate number of photographs compliment the text. Priced at about $10, Apollo 11: First Men on the Moon is a true bargain, which is rare these days.
Buy it. Read it. You will not regret it.
Great reference book for lunar astronomers.......2006-09-23
Robert Godwin the author of several other Apogee (space) books has once again published something remarkably unique. This book is the first in a series of quick reference space related guidebooks, which can be read in an hour, and will appeal to a wide audience. It is truly wonderful to read about an extraordinary historical event and examine colorful photos of our colorless Moon, exquisitely documented over 37 years ago.
There are 48 pages (about half the book) of high quality, "color" photos of the Apollo 11 mission including many of the astronauts in their EVA spacesuits walking around on the Moon; all of which makes this guidebook well worth the price, only a few dollars more than a monthly magazine.
The text introduction, although quite brief, is extremely well written, covering the age of discovery over many centuries of human history. How the author managed to squeeze such a vast series of of historical events in to such a suscinct overview, is truly amazing.
Mr. Godwin provides an easy to read chronological history of the people, places and things, that led up to the paradyme shift in what was once thought to be an impossible journey, a voyage from the Earth to the Moon. There were many scientific and technological developments, from Gallileo's invention of the telescope, to the Wright Brothers first powered flight at Kittyhawk, to Germany's WW-II V2 rocket development, that one by one, later paved the way to NASA's Project Mercury, Gemini and finally the Apollo Moon Missions. The first trip to the Moon was during Apollo 8 by Christmas of 1968, but what everyone remembers most was the first lunar "landing" realized by Apollo 11, in July of 1969.
I found from the very first page of this book, Mr. Godwin relates well to the accomplishment of Apollo 11; starting with the influence of Columbus and change in thinking that the Earth is really round. I never expected in a "guidebook" such a capsulized historical overview of mankind's most significant advancements in scientific knowledge. Many other earlier discoveries resulted in a far greater understanding of our place in the Universe, but not until the Apollo Moon missions did our knowledge come to the pinnacle, and perhaps contributed the most to the common man's knowledge of space and our nearest celestial neighbor, a mere quarter million miles away from Earth.
This first book in the series is so good, I won't be satified until I get the additional Apogee guidebooks, overviewing the history of spacecraft testing and rocket launchers (Vol I), plus the Moon missions of Apollo 12 through 17 (Vol II). All three books will long endure as a prized addition to my collection of spaceflight memorabilia.
Good simple primer with good pictures.......2006-08-19
Thirty quick read pages reflecting the historical roots and developments that lead to the first moon landing. It's a simple, good, "primer," accompanied by good pictures and straightforward factual details.

When penniless businessman Mr. Bedford retreats to the Kent coast to write a play, he meets by chance the brilliant Dr. Cavor, an absentminded scientist on the brink of developing a material that blocks gravity. Cavor soon succeeds in his experiments, only to tell a stunned Bedford that the invention makes possible one of the oldest dreams of humanity: a journey to the moon. With Bedford motivated by money, and Cavor by the desire for knowledge, the two embark on the expedition. But neither are prepared for what they finda world of freezing nights, boiling days, and sinister alien life, in which they may be trapped forever.

As I sit down to write here amidst the shadows of vine-leaves under the blue sky of southern Italy, it comes to me with a certain quality of astonishment that my participation in these amazing adventures of Mr. Cavor was, after all, the outcome of the purest accident. It might have been any one. I fell into these things at a time when I thought myself removed from the slightest possibility of disturbing experiences.

Social commentary and great adventure!.......2007-08-05
Mr Bedford, a recently bankrupt Victorian gentleman has retired to the English countryside to recover his spirit and write a play. He meets Dr Cavor, an eccentric, quaintly comical scientific genius researching the preparation of a compound he calls "Cavorite" that will be opaque to all radiation including gravity. When a laboratory error results in the wildly successful early completion of the Cavorite project, Bedord and Cavor use it to create a sphere that is capable of travel to the moon.
The science in HG Wells' "First Men in the Moon" is now known to be wildly off the mark - anti-gravity; a lunar atmosphere that freezes during the frigid lunar night and sublimates into a rarified but breathable air during the warmer day; an extraordinarily fecund flora that seeds itself, germinates, grows, blooms and completes its life cycle during the brief sunlight hours; and a civilized but strictly class structured lunar insect-like people living under the moon's surface that Bedord and Cavor called "Selenites".
Despite its failings in the light of current scientific knowledge, "First Men in the Moon" is still an enjoyable adventure written in typical late Victorian style that gives us an early taste of 20th century science fiction space opera to follow. Just as he did in his better known novel "The Time Machine", Wells successfully uses his protagonists, Bedord and Cavor, as tools to discuss, satirize and critique deeply and dearly held British notions of class and imperialism.
Suspending your belief and accepting the science in terms of what was known and understood at the turn of the century will allow you to whisk yourself away on a space-faring adventure for an enlightening, enjoyable few hours. Recommended.

My favorite HG Wells book.......2007-02-10
This is by far my favorite HG Wells. It's the first one I read and the one I keep rereading. I've read it three times now and have enjoyed it every time. This is science fiction at its best, with convincing descriptions of the lunar landscape and inhabitants, as well as human interest and complex character development.
Like all science fiction, it requires suspension of disbelief to appreciate fully. Don't expect Wells to write like a scientist, and you'll be fine.
I love this book! Oh, and if it helps inform, I have a master's degree in physics.
Cavorite: Opaque to Gravity.......2006-07-19
It is perhaps a cliché to suggest that H.G. Wells was a man with an imagination ahead of his time. Wells was writing in the late Victorian era but was still able to visualise future societies and even inventions that today have reasonable credibility. He was a science fiction writer of great clarity. Although Wells is justifiably better known for "The Time Machine" and "War of the Worlds", "The First Men in the Moon" is still a worthy work.
Despite publishing this novel in 1901, Wells was aware of the issues of lunar gravity and the consequences of this to those on the moon. He knew that lunar gravity was only one sixth of that on earth. However, he also wrote of the moon as having an atmosphere. But most writers of the time would have assumed this too. They would also have reasonably assumed the real possibility of life on the moon.
"The First Men in the Moon" tells the story of Professor Cavor and his discovery of a material that was opaque to gravity. He was befriended by Bedford who is the narrator of the tale. Together, the two build a sphere that transports them to the lunar surface where they discover a bizarre world of "Selenites" that primarily live beneath the ground.
Understandably, both men a fearful yet curious about this alien environment. However, it is Cavor who is captured by the moon's inhabitants and is unable to flee back to Earth. Bedford survives to tell of their travels. Yet the story is completed by the transmission of radio messages from Cavor back from the moon. And remember that this was written by a man with only a knowledge of the world at the turn of the 19th Century!
"The First Men in the Moon" is not one of Wells's great works. It is, however, part of his large body of work that continues to capture a modern audience.
Meddling in L unar Matters.......2006-03-04
This HGW novel is not as satisfying as his more famous
sci fi pieces, but it is representative of turn-of-the-century
interest in galactic exploration. Related in the first person by an impoverished would-be playwright, Mr. Bedford (for whom no first name is given), the story opens as he makes the acquaintance of an eccentric scientist named Cavor in a coastal area of England. Gradually persuaded by the latter's dreams of conquering gravity by means of a substance he will eventually invent, Bedford soon becomes an enthusiastic convert to theoretical astronomy; he injects some practical ideas-as well as his private dreams of avarice and proprietary empire. Ah, the temptation of creating one's little sphere of power.
Embarking on an odyssey in a sphere made of Cavorite the partners in adventure land in a crater on the moon, where they encounter odd vegetation which flourishes during the two-week lunar day. But even more amazing is their discovery of a species of intelligent beings (described by Cavor as ant-men) who dwell in the moon's interior. When captured the two men fight their way back to the surface, but become separated. Assuming that Cavor has been killed by the native Selenites (Cavor;s term for them), Bedford manages to return to Earth, but the story does not quite end there. What is the source of mysterious transmissions from the moon and--equally curious--what causes them to cease? Wells' protagonists express the author's commentary on man's propensity for warfare and injudicious zeal to modulate alien civilizations due to our anthropomorphic egocentrism. Nevertheless, this book offers great sci fi lore which will appeal to kids of all ages!
