    Book Description

The concept of ‘designerly ways of knowing’ emerged in the late 1970s in association with the development of new approaches in design education. Professor Nigel Cross first clearly articulated this concept in a paper called ‘Designerly Ways of Knowing’ which was published in the journal Design Studies in 1982. Since then, the field of study has grown considerably, as both design education and design research have developed together into a new discipline of design. This book provides a unique insight into a field of study with important implications for design research, education and practice.

Professor Nigel Cross is one of the most internationally-respected design researchers and this book is a revised and edited collection of key parts of his published work from the last quarter century. Designerly Ways of Knowing traces the development of a research interest in articulating and understanding the nature of design cognition, and the concept that designers (whether architects, engineers, product designers, etc.) have and use particular ‘designerly’ ways of knowing and thinking. There are chapters covering the following topics:

As a timeline of scholarship and research, and a resource for understanding how designers think and work, Designerly Ways of Knowing will be of interest to researchers, teachers and students of design; design practitioners and design managers.

3 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners.......2003-03-09

Pat Allen gives an informed and moving account of her personal experiences and how art used therapeutically has helped her work through different life challenges. However, being an artist and pursuing the field of art therapy I found her approaches and explanations a bit simplistic and not challenging for those already initiated in the use of art materials and techniques. A section for those with art backgrounds, or a follow-up book, might be helpful in this regard. A good pick for beginners, but not for those already conversant and comfortable with techniques and materials. Her resourse lists are helpful and informative. I would have liked to see works by patients of Ms. Allen's also included, with comments. This might have made the reading more challenging and interesting.

    5 out of 5 stars a wealth of ideas.......2001-12-21

The author reveals much of her own journey through painfull life experiences and how art expressions helped her to heal.
The book is filled with her own original artwork, and it is a very open, brave art indeed.
Her suggestions for the reader are very stimulating, and make one eager to begin to make art.She offers many examples of art activities and materials.,and even has an appendix for a music catalogue(she suggests listening to music while artmaking)and an adress for art supply catalogue...Everyone will feel like an artist,as well as getting to know oneself at a deep level through doing this book.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and effective.......2000-11-08

A very moving and effective book with seamless ties between art therapy and personal experiences - this book easily reaches out to anybody, artist or not, therapist or not. It's for the common man and its honesty and fluent accounts make it extremely accessible.

    5 out of 5 stars A Life-changing Experience.......2000-08-21

Pat Allen is a truly gifted individual who describes activities to help us connect with our deepest questions and our answers. For many years she has studied and refined ways to make this connection with herself and the others she has worked with. After just participating in a workshop with her where we did many of the activities included in Art is a Way of Knowing, I know for myself that she has clearly laid out ways of learning important truths about ourselves and healing from the pains of life. I look forward to using them so I can live a more centered life and be more effective in my work with others.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2000-05-04

The author's own very personal story of healing & growth through imagery and the art process, combined with a very clear, present-moment style of writing was absolutely riveting to me! This is a living, pulsing and highly moving, inspired and inspiring work. I couldn't put it down.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2002-02-04

This isn't a great book about using drama in the classroom, but it's probably the best I have found to introduce the concept. As an actor and a teacher I have never had a problem employing dramatic techniques in the classroom, but this book was helpful even to me. An overview of Pantomime, Improvisation and Reading & Writing Scenes is provided. There is also a general overview of the Dramatic Arts and advice on how to stage your classroom production as a real presentation.

The chapters are kept short, with lots of additional text boxes. These boxes contain "Notes from the teacher" to give real-world examples of the techniques being described. Throughout the book, more than just descriptions are given. Stories of the techniques in use are very helpful in guiding the teacher to design activities for his classroom. While this book did seem to focus on upper-elementary level activities, they could all be easily adapted to fit most any age level.

Dramatic play is very important for children. Preschoolers learn through their play and any age group can learn by using their imagination. The activities outlined in this book will cause children to not only show their knowledge of a subject, but to construct it into a new medium. This extra thinking will help to solidify it in their minds. Because they will have the chance to interact with it they can fully understand how a flower bud opens, or what it was like to hide form the conscripts during the Civil War. Dramatic play is an invaluable tool in the classroom and this book's aim is to introduce it to your classroom.

          Why 4 stars?:
Heller keeps his chapters short and peppered with illustrations of his techniques in use. There is so much that can be added to a classroom environment through the use of dramatic play as a teaching tool.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner or expert.......2001-08-07

If you are a teacher or will become one, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! I have used this book as a text for some of my drama in education courses. It is very clear and concise, even for folks who don't know drama "lingo." I appreciate his brevity, which keeps the book's focus clear, but he is also complete and brings up points that can be explored and discussed. I also appreciated his "notes from the field sections, which detail how actual teachers have used drama in the classroom. This is not a ground breaking book, but it is the most accessible book for drama in the classroom that I have come across.

I have taught for 21 years and have never quit learning. This book has taught me some new strategies to incorporate into my classroom.

              Book Description

This volume challenges the dominant paradigm of how knowledge is typically constructed and shared in adult education settings by focusing on ways in which adult educators can expand learning opportunities and experiences for their learners. Chapter contributors include actors, musicians, photographers, storytellers, and poets, all of who also happen to be adult educators. In each chapter, the author describes how one or more forms of artistic expression were used to promote learning in formal or informal adult education settings. In each case, the purpose of education was not to teach art (that is, not to develop expertise in acting, poetry writing, or creating great works of art).

Art appeals universally to us all and and has the capacity to bridge cultural differences. Art can also foster individual and social transformation, promoting dialogue and deepening awareness of ourselves and the world around us. This volume is an essential resource for adult educators interested in artistic expression as an teaching tool.

This is the 107th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education.

4 out of 5 stars Russian Decorative Painting - Techniques & Projects Made Easy.......2007-08-01

A book by Priscilla Hauser and Boris Grafov which is beautifully presented but I think a beginner would have difficulty with the projects. There are pages dealing with some of the "basics" (such as brush loading, palette preparation etc) which would not be necessry for a painter with some experience. What is helpful to anyone new to the Zhostovo style are the techniques required to paint the leaves and flowers and this is shown in close-up and color very well. There are 10 projects featured and the book finishes with a superb gallery of completed pieces from various collections and these are an inspiration in themselves. The paintings throughout the book are in oils.
