Painting People: Figure Painting Today
ASIN: 030011754X |
Book Description
David Hockney (b. 1937) is one of the most significant artists exploring and pushing the boundaries of figurative art today. Hockney has been engaged with portraiture since his teenage years, when he painted Portrait of My Father (1955), and his self-portraits and depictions of family, lovers, and friends represent an intimate visual diary of the artist’s life.
This beautifully illustrated book examines Hockney’s portraits in all media—painting, drawing, photography, and prints—and has been produced in close collaboration with the artist. Featured subjects include members of Hockney’s family and private circle, as well as portraits of such artists and cultural figures as Lucian Freud, Francesco Clemente, R. B. Kitaj, Helmet Newton, Lawrence Weschler, and W. H. Auden. The authors reveal how Hockney’s creative development and concerns about representation can be traced through his portrait work: from his battle with naturalism to his experimentation with and later rejection of photography, and from his recent camera lucida drawings to his return to painting from life.
Featuring more than 250 works from the past fifty years, David Hockney Portraits illustrates not only the fascinating range of Hockney’s creative practice but also the unique and cyclical nature of his artistic concerns.
Customer Reviews:
Maniac.......2007-05-12
Generally the portrait images were too small to really study his painting style. That is my only complaint. Interesting stories in the section describing all his sitters, famous or not. What a productive maniac he has been. 41 portraits of his dogs!!!
A Very Personal and Tender Survey of the Works of David Hockney.......2006-04-24
David Hockney is an artist whose works are familiar to everyone, whether from exposure to his many museum shows, his paintings and drawings included in every major survey of contemporary art, to his magical sets for operas such as The Magic Flute, Die Frau Ohne Schatten, The Rake's Progress, Tristan und Isolde, etc.
This current book DAVID HOCKNEY PORTRAITS is, for this reader, the most sensitive presentation of Hockney not only as an artist but also as a tender, feeling, caring human being. The book accompanies an exhibition soon to travel and includes over 250 examples of Hockney's view of his family, himself, his friends - famous and not so famous-, lovers, and pets. The result is a survey of Hockney's people-oriented works over the past fifty years.
Included are early pen and ink drawings from the 1950s, gentle and simple line portraits of his mother and father and himself, and progresses to the development of his large-scale paintings of life size portraits of family, lovers, and self-portraits. Many of the people depicted in these works are no longer alive and there is a sense of memory in some of the works that barely hides Hockney's sadness at their parting.
The book also opens the door to Hockney's experimentation with photography as an art medium, with several of his multiple view Polaroid collages of a single 'sitting' telling more stories than a movie. And after Hockney's excursion into that medium the portraits turn to painting his subjects from life.
Most of the works in this book have been published in other volumes or have become familiar to the public by other means, but it is the curatorial hand that makes his survey so fine and so immediate, a success not easily accomplished with an artist as private as Hockney: the collection is under the encouraging guidance of the artist. This is an excellent overview of a very special artist whose works continue to capture the imagination of viewers and fellow artists alike. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

It is impossible to separate out the history of representations of the naked male from the history of gay male culture, sensibility, or erotica. From the statuary of classical Greece to Michelangelo's David to the photography of Robert Mapplethorpe, the nude male form has signified for gay men not only sexual desire but homosexuality itself.
David Leddick's The Male Nude is an almost 800-page survey of the nude male in photography of the past century that presents us with the changes in body type, beauty, and sexual affect that have occurred over the past 100 years, but with evolving notions of "art" and "culture" as well. From Victorian prints of strong men to the "health" photos of the 1940s and '50s to the works of contemporary artists such as Mapplethorpe, Bruce Weber, and Nan Goldin, David Leddick charts the evolutions that the male body--and gay culture--have taken for ten decades. --Michael Bronski
Book Description
The very best and most impressive images from the original klotz of this title are included here- you'll find the likes of Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, David Hockney, George Platt Lynes, Cecil Beaton, Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans, Pierre et Gilles, and even Chuck Close. For anyone who worships the male body or wants to know why others do...
Customer Reviews:
Male pictures at a good price.......2005-08-16
I bought this book wondering about the quality and quantity of male picture included, but I am totally satisfied. The book displays a comprehensive sample of male pictures from late XIX century up to today. I think it will be useful for fine art students and other people who need a good visual source for the male nude.
Another Fine Leddick Volume.......2004-03-24
Nobody does a better job of collecting and publishing nude photographs of men than David Leddick. He adds here another fine volume to his several books on the subject. Leddick begins with photographers in the Nineteenth Century and continues to the present in chronological order. All the photographers you expect are here as well as some of the photographs we have seen many times before. (I'm thinking now of Mapplethorpe's infamous "Man in Polyester Suit.") In addition to Mapplethorpe, there's Thomas Eakins, Wilhelm von Gloeden, Cecil Beaton, George Platt Lynes-- for my money nobody surpasses him-- Bob Mizer, Horst and Herb Ritts. But Leddick also includes David Hockney, Duane Michaels, the incomparable Imogene Cunningham and one of my favorite photographs by one of my favorite photographers, a shot of Helmut Berger by Helmut Newton. I was also glad to see Leddick include the work of Nan Goldin and Pierre et Gilles, two unique photographers whom I admire tremendously. There's a good chance you'll find your favorite photographer included here and become acquainted as well with artists you didn't previously know.
This little volume is beautifully printed and extremely well-priced.
Did nothing for this straight woman.......2003-01-23
I must agree with the reviewer who stated that this book had a gay tilt to it. That's perfectly fine if that's your cup of tea, and I'm glad that gay men have books such as these to choose from. I prefer something with just photos of nude men by themselves. I guess I'll continue my search for such a book. I'm disappointed that there is so little out there for heterosexual women like me.
Not what I expected.......2002-12-28
How could it not be, right? It's called 'Male Nude'. Well there are many nude men within its pages, but nothing I found spectacular or new in approach. It seemed this book was done with a gay tilt to it as well, which is fine if that's what one is looking for. Several of the images are of men together, hugging, admiring, etc. I hoped for more nudes on their own, instead of images provoking what happened before or what will happen after the photo was taken. Regardless, there are some nice physiques here, and the book is laid out in chronological order from the 1900s up to present day. The past pictures were intersting to see, but this isn't something I keep precious in my collection.
Good General History of an Artform.......2002-06-04
There isn't much else I can say that I didn't cover in the title of my review. This is a good collection of photographs divided into time periods, each of which is given a brief essay introduction by Leddick. Leddick, while not a brilliant art historian, is the best I've found on this controversial and often overlooked artform.

Book Description
Icons and Legends spans the career of American photographer Michael Childers, including many photographs that are published for the first time. Childers was one of the founding photographers for Andy Warhol's magazine Interview; he photographed magazine covers for Elle, Life, and Vogue; and he worked as a special photographer for films and London National Theater productions.
Working mostly with black and white film, Childers has captured the icons and legends of popular culture and the art world. His stunning portraits include Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner, Clint Eastwood, Catherine Deneuve, Rock Hudson, and Carol Channing. Several portraits are of special importance because they were taken early in the actors' careers, before they became celebrities: Sissy Spacek, Demi Moore, Mel Gibson, John Travolta, Richard Gere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Equally important are portraits of the great film industry legends who helped establish and build the stars' careers, including film directors Billy Wilder and John Schlesinger and costume designer Edith Head.
In addition to stars of the film world, Childers has produced portraits of contemporary artists, architects, writers, and musicians. These include a series of photographs of Andy Warhol in his New York studio and Paris apartment, and a series of David Hockney in his Hollywood and London studios. Other portraits include artists Sam Francis, Edward Ruscha, Robert Graham, and Ed Moses; architects Richard Meier and E. Stewart Williams; musicians Ringo Starr, Cat Stevens, Grace Jones, and Rod Stewart; and writers Tennessee Williams, Micky Spillane, and Christopher Rice.

Buy it in bulk and give it away!.......2005-03-26
I found this book in the Stephen Ministry library at our church. After reading it I preached a series on the topic of criticism, and we purchased a stack of them and gave one to every family in the church. Money well spent!
Diehm is specific, balanced, and honest. His writing is accessible and practical. The book is suitable for small group use.
I also recommend a book on a related topic, IF STANDING TOGETHER IS SO GREAT, WHY DO WE KEEP FALLING APART? by Tom Kraeuter, which you can get here on Amazon, but probably faster through Training Resources of Hillsboro, Missouri or through YWAM (Youth With a Mission), both of whom have websites. You can even read my review for Kraueter's book (longer than this one) on Amazon.
God bless you and the people you love! This book will help!

Customer Reviews:
A Great Book on the Great Wall.......2004-06-07
This is an excellent book for middle or high school students on the history of the Great Wall of China. It is very well written and organized, drawing on recent scholarly works to summarize ongoing debates about the building of the wall.
The Review posted on Amazon web site from School Library Journal doesn't do the book justice at all. The text is simply excellent (they complain of "too much imformation") and granted the photos are not in color, but they are well chosen and some are striking (such as one of the Great Wall ending literally at the sea.)
The book also includes useful boxed insets on specific topics such as the buried terra cotta army of China's first Emperor, Qin Shih Huang Ti, and the Legend of Lady Meng Jiangnu, which became the most famous of all Chinese folktales. It tells the story of a husband buried alive in the building of the wall and his wife's effort to bury him despite the obstacles imposed by this original "evil Emperor." The final chapter describes efforts to dismantle the wall (as a symbol of the past) during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960's; now the Chinese government is dedicated to restoring and preserving this only human monument visible to the naked eye from space.
Every middle school and high school library should have this book, and it should be brought back into print.
