I lent this book from the library in our institute, and this book is very suitable to us, who do research with Synchrotron Radiation in the region of soft X-ray. Many directions of research for soft X-ray are included in this book.
I can't afford it because it is very expensive for me, although I like it very much!

A very good textbook.......2000-05-05

I took the class taught by the author at UC-Berkeley while he was finishing up this text (I also proofread a couple of the chapters as part of the class - you can find my name and the names of my classmates in the acknowledgements).

The text is very clearly written. An undergraduate physics / engineering level of understanding of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics is sufficient background for most the textbook. Most of the calculations are done semi-classically which helps for people not well versed in quantum mechanics. It also serves nicely as a reference text.

- Cyclotrons, wigglers and undulators
- Plasma physics with applications to EUV and X-ray sources

I used this book to prepare an exam corresponding to a 3rd year introductory nuclear physics course. I've received, in general, a really good impression, even though my contact with the text is been limited to the first -"Principles"- part of the book. My valutation, separating good ("+") and bad ("-") impressions is

(+) Lots of figures illustrating key concepts of the text, almost ever including experimental data plotting.
(+) Concise explanations.
(+) Structured treatment of topics.
(+) Explanations at an undergraduate level. Perfect for a 3rd - 4th year physics student.
(+) Little knowledge concerning other matters is required, just a few quantum mechanics and special relativity concepts that are anyway explained when needed.
(+) Author doesn't get lost into exhaustive and unnecessary mathematical developments.
(+) Supplementary appendices at the end of the book with useful imformation, also including every known isotope mass excess, half-time (or abbundance) and decay mode (if unstable).
(+) Includes exercises at the end of each chapter, solved in the appendices.
(+) Author refers to every theory valutating pros and cons of each one, never discarding any of them.

(-) More other books references while explanations are being developed would be helpful.
(-) Sometimes is difficult to discern which are the secondary or really important topics.
(-) If English is not your mother language you should take into account that sometimes a little bit complex sentences are used.

This book examines the physical principles underlying the workings of clocks--from the earliest mechanical clocks to the present-day sophisticated clocks based on the properties of individual atoms. Intended for non-specialists with some knowledge of physics or engineering,the book treats the material in a broad intuitive manner, with a minimum of mathematical formalism. The presentation covers a broad range of salient topics relevant to the measurement of frequency and time intervals. The main focus is on electronic time-keeping: clocks based on quartz crystal oscillators and, at greater length, atomic clocks based on quantum resonance in rubidium, cesium, and hydrogen atoms, and, more recently, mercury ions. The book treats the revolutionary changes that the optical laser has wrought on atomic standards through laser cooling and optical pumping, and it discusses the application of these clocks to global navigation--in particular Loran-C and the Global Positioning System. The book also touches on such topics as atomic resonance line shape, the relativistic Doppler effect and general notions of time, including the relativity of future and past, the clock paradox, the Sagnac effect and finally, time reversal symmetry.

Best discussion of Clocks at all levels.......1998-06-24

There are excellent books discussing time at a level accessible for the general reader (e.g. Empires of Time, by Anthony Aveni). The Quantum Beat is the only one I've seen that gives a thorough discussion of the basics and then goes on to give an incredibly lucid discussion of all the minute details involved in making more and more accurate clocks. He elaborates on the pluses and minuses of each new development, from the sundial to the pendulum clock to the quartz crystal clock to the atomic clock. He also outlines the directions currently being pursued -- clocks based on a single atom held in an atom trap.

The book will have special appeal to those who know about physics, crystals or engineering, and it should make fascinating reading for any educated layperson.

The largest contribution to radiation exposure to the population as a whole arises from diagnostic X-rays. Protecting the patient from radiation is a major aim of modern health policy, and an understanding of the relationship between radiation dose and image quality is of pivotal importance in optimising medical diagnostic radiology. In this volume the data provided for exploring these concerns are partly based on X-ray spectra, measured on diagnostic X-ray tube assemblies, and are supplemented by the results of measurements on phantoms and simulation calculations. The book also features a CD-ROM containing a comprehensive database in the form of Excel files: X-ray spectra for conventional diagnostics and mammography, interaction coefficients of the most important elements, compounds and mixtures, characteristics of the primary and the imaging radiation field, data from various anti-scatter grids, dosimetric data, which are needed for the evaluation of patient dose, and further helpful information.

This copy of the Manual of the Christian Knight was compiled of photo copies of the original text written in Old English. It was extremely difficult to read. I had to obtain an E book version to to be able to understand it.
