    Book Description

Contemporary Art and Multicultural Education is the first book of its kind to address the role of art within today's multicultural education. Co-published with The New Museum of Contemporary Art, this beautifully illustrated book provides both theoretical foundations and practical resources for art educators and students, combining exquisite color reproductions, statements from contemporary artists and interviews with notable educators.

Absent from multicultural art education is an approach which connects everyday experience, social critique and creative expression with classroom learning; for students from widely-varied backgrounds and differing levels of English comprehension, art becomes a vital means of reflecting upon the nature of society and social existence. To this end, this volume features both works of art and artists' personal statements in English and Spanish with lesson plans which explore topics that connect what students learn in school to what life experiences might reveal.

Co-published with the New Museum of Contemporary Art.

      Book Description

In contemporary society, the cult of celebrity is inescapable. Anyone can be turned into a celebrity, and anything can be made into a celebrity event. Celebrity has become a part of everyday life, a common reference point. But how have people like Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Bill Clinton or Princess Diana impressed themselves so powerfully on the public mind? Do they have unique qualities, or have their images been constructed by the media? And what of the dark side of celebrity – why is the hunger to be in the public eye so great that people are prepared to go to any lengths to achieve it, as numerous mass murderers and serial killers have done.

Chris Rojek brings together celebrated figures from the arts, sports, politics and other public spheres, from O.J. Simpson and Marilyn Monroe to Hitler and David Bowie, and touches on many movements and fads, including punk, rock-and-roll and fashion. Rojek analyzes the difference between ascribed celebrity, which derives from bloodline, and achieved celebrity, which follows on from personal achievement - the difference between Princess Margaret and, say, Woody Allen. He also shows how there is no parallel in history to today's ubiquitous "living" form of celebrity, powered by newspapers, PR departments, magazines and electronic mass media.

      Book Description

With the original publication of Multicultural Voices, Frances Ann Day celebrated the lives of thirty-nine multicultural authors and illustrators, helping educators bring students and authors together in a way that promoted stimulating reading, imaginative writing, and cultural sensitivity. Thousands of readers not only discovered a new body of literature, they also gained new sensitivity to writing styles, language subtleties, and worldviews.

Now, the new edition has been significantly revised to keep it current and make it even more useful. Day has added a number of new authors, updated the biographical profiles, included reviews and activities for more than 120 new books, and expanded the resource list for educators, librarians, and parents. There are five appendixes containing assessment plans, additional activities, lists of birthdays, a calendar of multicultural events, and information on additional resources. Plus, a comprehensive subject index helps readers plan story sessions and units of study. Themes, curricular areas, genres, and topics facilitate the use of literature across the curriculum.

This guide is highly versatile, enabling readers to adapt the material to fit their individual teaching and learning styles, curriculum requirements, and educational goals. Educators, librarians, and parents alike will find the book an inspiring resource.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific teacher resource.......2003-08-06

I attended a workshop facilitated by the author of this book and was so impressed with both her presentation and the activities in the book that I bought a copy right then and there. I love the way the book is organized. You get the background information on thirty nine different multicultural authors and illustrators of books for children. There are brief summaries of books written and illustrated by the writiers and artists highlighted and then there are suggested acitivities to go with the books. The book has given me new ideas to help the students in my class broaden their world view. I recommend it to any classroom teacher who wants to plan lessons that emphasize multicultural awareness.

        Book Description

From the pet that we live with and care for, to news items such as animal cloning, and the use of various creatures in film, television and advertising, animals are a constant presence in our lives.Animal is a timely overview of the many ways in which we live with animals, and assesses many of the paradoxes of our relationships with them: for example, why is the pet that sits by the dinner table never for eating? Examining novels such as Charlotte’s Web, films such as Old Yeller and Babe, science and advertising, fashion and philosophy, Animal also evaluates the ways in which we think about animals and challenges a number of the assumptions we hold. Why is it, for example, that animals are such a constant presence in children’s literature? And what does it mean to wear fake fur? Is fake fur an ethical avoidance of animal suffering, or merely a sanitized version of the unacceptable use of animals as clothing?Neither evangelical nor proselytizing, Animal invites the reader to think beyond the boundaries of a subject that has a direct effect on our day-to-day lives.

        5 out of 5 stars New Noir.......2000-06-21

Like many people, I often wondered why more fim noir films aren't made. Neon Noir gives a simple answer: they are. It examines how film noir has changed since the 50's and who makes them. It also analyzes contemporary film noir and attempts to explain why film noir has changed as it has.

              Book Description

The past decade has witnessed a steady increase in the numbers of Asian students in North American institutions of higher learning. While their academic success has been widely recognized, concerns about their silence in classrooms have also been expressed by educators. Following an overview of Asian students in North American higher education, this book presents a focused ethnographic study of twenty Asian graduate students enrolled in a major US university, exploring and describing Asian student's oral classroom participation modes across multiple factors. Four major classroom communication patterns--total integration, conditional interaction, marginal participation, and silent observation--are identified among the participants and discussed across sociocultural, affective, cognitive, linguistic, and pedagogical/environmental factors. Also discussed are the Asian concepts of face saving, politeness, and social identity in multiple discourse communities in light of Asian students' perceptions of and modes in classroom participation. The book concludes with a call for the development of cultural transformation competence, which encompasses social identity negotiation skills, and culture-sensitivity knowledge and mindful reflexivity in addition to communicative competence.

                Book Description

Abdi urges that beyond the celebratory platforms of the political triumph over apartheid, there must be effective and culturally inclusive programs of education for the development of the highly disenfranchsed majority in South Africa. Deliberate programs of colonialism and apartheid in South Africa resulted in inferior education, cultural marginalization, political oppression, economic exploitation and resulting underdevelopment in the lives of the disenfranchised majority. In addition to historical and contemporary analysis, this study looks at the possibilities of formulating and implementing new programs of education and development that could effectively deal with such current problems as chronic unemployment, skyrocketing crime rates, stagnating learning systems, and the continuing formations of a huge underclass that may be losing its stake in the promised post-apartheid project.

Adding a wash of color to a simple drawing is one of the first techniques every budding artist must learn, and a terrific stepping stone from sketching to painting. These comprehensive exercises and studies, utilizing Paul Taggart's uniquely detailed "Artstrips", explain exactly how to master this skill. Demonstration studies, sketches, and finished compositions provide inspiring starting points, and there are tips on materials and advice on the basics of color mixing. Step by step, create landscapes, figures, flowers, and buildings, using an exciting variety of media, from pastels and watercolors to inks and gouache. Even those who already paint will discover new ideas for developing their abilities, tactics for bending the rules, and unusual ways to manipulate familiar painting tools.
