1 out of 5 stars College Physics 7th ed. Serway Faughn Vol.1.......2005-10-05

This is the most poorly written text I have ever used. I bought the student solutions manual also which I thought might help me understand the concepts, but to no avail, the solutions manual jumps from Problem #5 to #21 in one chapter?? Forget about the examples on the text they are totally confusing and don't show you how they arrived with the solution. I am no dummy. This book will make you have low self esteem, thats the way I felt. I have a physics tutor who also said this book makes physics even harder to understand. I trully feel sorry for the student that has to buy this book because the school requires it. I had to buy a bootleg CD with the teacher's solutions on it to fully understand this text! We shouldn't have to do that.

1 out of 5 stars The average speed of learning with this book is 0 m/s........2005-10-01

This book is not at all helpful when trying to learn physics. By the time you get done trying to figure out this book and it's examples, you'll have pulled out all your hair. So my advice to if you're going to use this book is shave your head now to save yourself from the pain later. In all reality, I haven't learned anything from this book. It is very disorganized and the chapter problems are rediculous...what makes it better is the examples in the chapter don't correlated but with only a couple of chapter problems.

1 out of 5 stars Not in my worst nightmares..........2001-03-30

I have hated textbooks before, but this one takes the cake. It is quite possibly the worst one that my professor could have chosen. The authors use such a wild mixture of mind-numbingly simple content and obscure, abstract concepts that the picture that they paint is, to put it bluntly, incoherent. They dance around the definition of vocabulary words, always coming close to defining stuff (but never actually coming out and *saying it*), contradict themselves repeatedly, and assume that the reader understands half the concepts before they are even introduced. Perhaps the most irritating thing about this text is the fact that there is *no* glossary to speak of--if the reader doesn't understand the sketchy definition in the chapter or chapter summary, too bad, because that's all you get! Steer clear of this book, if at all possible.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book in combination with class.......2000-09-27

I'm currently using this book in a high school physics course, and have found it to be fairly non-technical. The exercises at the end of each chapter vary in difficulty, from the very straight forward to the very difficult. While this book has many strengths, it should not be used by its self. This book requires equations to be derived in class, as they are simply presented at the beginning of the chapter in the book... Overall, this is a great textbook if you have the mind to be able to derive equations and properties yourself.

If you want a competitive advantage in this class, buy the ANNOTATED INSTRUCTORS EDITION. It is available used from the Amazon marketplace for only $99.

Instructors often use the suggested problems in the instructor's edition for their quizzes and tests.

3 out of 5 stars sloppy book.......2006-04-01

I bought this at Amazon.com from an Awesome Deal I found on DailyTool.com. This book is sloppy because my professor always tells us that don't trust the formulars from the book. However, the book does cover something interesting and related to our everyday life.

5 out of 5 stars Not Much to Say..........2005-09-27

As this was required text for my class, there's no need to pick it apart. Should have opted for the Teacher's edition. But who cares....I just saved a bunch of money on my school books by switching to Amazon.com, YEAH BABY.

5 out of 5 stars Best Algebra Based Physics Text.......2002-12-30

Physics is a difficult subject. This text does an admirable job of making a difficult subject easier.

There are advantages and disadvantages to disallowing the writer to use calculus in writing the material. Some formulas require calculus to derive and so must be either taken on faith as true, or the derivations looked up in a calculus based test. Fortunately the times when this issue comes up are few enough to not seriously hamper the flow of the book.

This book may be read as a first book on Physics. I strongly recommend the book Conceptual Physics by Hewitt for a running start at the subject.

Members of the lay public interested in physics may read both of these texts, as they are at introductory level and contains material on classical as well as modern physics.

The units are in SI ( metric ) which simplifies the math.

The Wilson and Buffa text has Color photos of natural phenomenon and situations that illustrate the physics under discussion. There examples are intermixed throughout showing how to work problems involving the principles involved.

I believe this book is an important part of a well rounded education. Physics is NOT an easy topic. If it were, then Newton would have developed theories on relativity and gravity waves. This book does what it was designed to do, that is assist beginners in starting their journey.

I read the book. I found it to be fun.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Great.......2002-09-27

While I haven't had the pleasure of having Buffa for a professor (and by all accounts I'm planning on avoiding it), the book really isn't that bad. The sample problems are helpful and the escalating difficulty is appreaciated.

The downside is that he tends to get bogged down in little details that aren't really as important as he makes them out to be--especially considering that the book is for people who don't need calc-based Physics (read life science majors, and all non-science related majors who need a GE), and occasionally the problems seem totally unrelated to what has been presented in the text.

Still, as far as text books go, this one isn't bad and if you have a good teacher to go along, it'll serve you just fine.

5 out of 5 stars A Book For The Student.......2002-06-12

This is the best written physics textbook for an introductory physics course at its mathematical level (precalculus) that I have ever seen. The author knows his audience and stays within their level without "dumbing down" the exposition of the subject.
The explanations of physics principles and the worked out examples have a clarity unmatched in any textbook I have ever seen. Paul Urone distinguishes himself from other authors by asking and answering the questions that first year physics can't ask because the depth of their knowledge is not great enough yet.
Peter Urone owes the world one more textbook on first year Physics; this one must include calculus. Without doubt, it will be
as effective for its audience as his "College Physics" with the
            mathematics at the precalculus level.
Finally, no matter what textbook you are using, buy this book as
            a companion.

This is truly one of the most student-friendly Physics textbooks that I have come across. The problems covered are well explained and there are plenty of examples, with references to real life, that help make Physics easy to understand. It covers all the necessary information needed to have you well prepared for the MCAT, or any other science test that requires Physics. Highly recommended!

I have had the pleasure of being taught Physics by Brian Jones at CSU from this book, and I will say that although I have personally had an aversion and dread of taking a physics class, Brian's enthusiasm, knowledge, real-life applications, participation and integration with this text have made Physics into my favorite class this semester (and I am a Biomedical Science major). This text is extremely readable, even engrossing; moreover, it thoroughly covers the major principles of physics without losing the reader. The clever integration of real-world examples helps to visualize physics as the amazing observation and understanding tool of the "magical" aspects of the world and the greater universe surrounding us. The problems in the book are workable, and there are plenty of examples in the text that relate to the problems to help solve them. Brian used to write problems for the MCAT, and some of the problems in the book are geared for biology applications, so this would be a great study tool for the MCAT as well. This text does not require any calculus, but a strong understanding of trigonometry is essential. As an aside, Brian is devoted to making physics fun and interesting and has taught physics all over the world, including in Africa. His Little Shop of Physics (go to littleshop.physics.colostate.edu/) is an extraordinary traveling teaching tool geared to elementary school students--my own children have been turned on to a love of science by this program.

            Book Description

Hitler's Vienna explores the critical, formative years that the young Adolf Hitler spent in Vienna. It is both a cultural and political portrait of the Austrian capital and a biography of Hitler during his years there, from 1906 to 1913. Hitler's was not the modern, artistic "fin-de-siecle Vienna" we associate with Freud, Mahler, and Wittgenstein. Instead, it was a cauldron of fear and ethnic rivalry and a breeding ground for racist political theories. Brigitte Hamann vividly depicts the undercurrent of disturbing ideologies that flowed beneath the glitter of the Hapsburg capital. Drawing on previously untapped sources that range from personal reminiscences to the records of homeless shelters where the unemployed Hitler spent his nights, Hamann gives us the fullest account ever rendered of this period of Hitler's life and shows us how profoundly his years in Vienna influenced his later career.

            5 out of 5 stars A Detailed Account of Hitler's Early Life!.......2007-06-02

Adolf Hitler remains one of the most despised of all dictators. His hatred and anti-Semitism and destruction of over six million European Jews as well as Poles, Slavics, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses are well documented. But in order to see how monsters like Hitler and Stalin came to be, we must understand their backgrounds, environments, and upbringings. In this well-researched and detailed book by Brigitte Hamann, you will find it richingly informative and shocking at times as well. We get to know what life was life in Hitler's Vienna which he despised and his close, loving relationship with Klara Hitler, his beloved mother. We learn about his relatives, ancestry which he tried desperately to destroy or change to alter his own public image to his people. The racism between Aryans and non-Aryans were well documented before World War II in Austria. This book is an invaluable tool in understanding how Hitler came to be this monster.

As I read the book, I digest the information slowly because there is so that I don't know. The author is really detailed in explaining and citing information. There are about 40 pages of citations at the end. There is a lot of information to know about like life in Vienna before World War I. The politics around Vienna is quite fascinating and disturbing as the small political groups. By reading this book, you will begin to understand the world of which a monster was raised in. We learn about his family relations, his time in hostels, his friendships, his art and love for architecture, his close relationship with his mother, the author pulls no punches or leaves anything out about Hitler's early life. He was somebody who rised from the shadows and became a monster in his own right. What fascinated me the most about this book was the separtist groups in Vienna, who would have thought that other ethnic groups like Czechs, Poles, Slavics, and even Germans posed a threat against Austrian way of life. Hitler's Austrian background and the feeling of his own inferiority and the class differences help the readers understand how he began to think including the prejudice and deep hatred that he felt for the non-Aryans and non-Germans. I didn't know anything about the prejudices and friction and problems amongst the groups in Vienna then. I have never been to Vienna but I still think of it as the ultimate classical place to spend New Year's Eve. The more I read, the more I understand the circumstances around Hitler's Vienna and you always wonder might have been if Hitler became a successful artist or if his mother had not died. Oh what might have been so different that millions of lives wouldn't have been lost that is what we can't lose sight of is that millions of innocent lives, children, women, and men died because of this one man's obsession.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting narrative of Hitler's early years.......2003-07-24

Though this book is better in the original German (it loses something in the translation), Hamann is a diligent researcher who has unearthed some new facts about Hitler's period in Vienna. She uses primary sources and archive material without merely rehashing what other biographies have written in the past. The Franz Jetzinger book from the 50's is still the standard, definitive version of Hitler's Vienna years, but Hamann does a nice job and weaves in some new material. She also adroitly dismisses some claims from other German authors who have inaccurately written about Hitler's relationship with early roommate, August (Gustl) Kubizek. Thankfully, Hamann doesn't indulge in psychoanalyzing Hitler, which is sort of a deranged cottage industry amongst more recent Hitler biographers.

One small criticism is that Hamann veers away from Hitler too frequently. There is a plethora of material about Vienna's political climate in the 1910's, its mayor, the origin of anti-Semitism in the city and other ancillary details. Though all of this is relevant to Hitler, one wishes she would have stayed a bit more on topic. Still, the book is interesting, informative and devoid of errors. If you want to learn more about the young Hitler, this is an acceptable choice.

5 out of 5 stars The key to Mein Kampf.......2003-04-01

Brigitte Hamann has done a remarkable thing with this book. By examining Vienna during Hitler's formative years, she has unlocked a lot of mystery surrounding the great man himself. While it is true that she uncovered discrepancies in Hitler's description of those years in Mein Kampf, her real contribution is in helping the reader to understand what Hitler was talking about, and why he said the things he said.

Particularly useful is Hamann's analysis of the prominent politicians of the day. She first described these leaders and their political ups and downs. Then, with the testimony of the witnesses who knew Hitler during those years, she deftly draws a picture of the formative influences that helped shape the mature dictator. Hitler was obsessed with politics and he learned what worked and what did not work during those early years in Vienna. Many of his later policies first saw the light of day in the Vienna of his youth. There is a chilling passage about the problem of gypsy pickpockets expected for the 60 Anniversary Parade in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph, in 1908. One solution, seriously presented in Parliament at the time, was to tattoo a number on the forearm of every gypsy.

Hamann also provides an in-depth analysis of the Austro-Hungarian attempt at a multi-ethnic parliamentarism, the chaos and the inefficiency that it brought, and the consequent neglect for the common people. The Pan-German movement, which clearly influenced the young Hitler is clearly explained in considerable detail. At times while reading this book, I had to pause and remind myself that the period under review presaged the rise of Adolf Hitler to power by some 20 years!

Out of the murk emerges Hitler as a young man obsessed by politics, hot tempered, forceful in argument, with poor work habits, odd hours, and a penchant for talk. Hamann's decision to look at the politics that helped him to formulate his world view is brilliant history. This fascinating book is very worthy of your attention.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but the original is better!.......2002-12-02

I really liked this book as it offered some new facts as opposed to regurgitating the same points already in circulation about Hitler and his youth. Hamann is a great historian of our time, and those of you fluent in German would be well advised to get ahold of this book in the original.

            4 out of 5 stars A Valuable Study.......2001-12-26

I thought I knew a lot about Adolf Hitler's life, even his youth, until I stumbled upon this book. Hitler's Vienna provides a fascinating glimpse into the social, economic, and political milieu in which young Hitler found himself immersed when he came from the provinces to the capital of the crumbling Austro-Hungarian empire in order to pursue his dream of a career in art or architecture.
The book is really less about Hitler himself than about the forces which helped to shape his weltanschauung. Though he reportedly not an anti-Semite as a youth, it was in Vienna that Hitler learned the language of anti-semitism and nationalism.
As I engrossed myself in the book, my thoughts often wandered to comparing the identity politics and quota demands of Austro-Hungarian politicians with the increasing ethnic balkanization here in the United States and wondered whether such a man as Hitler could not one day spring from our political landscape.
One of the chief things I learned is that political and ethnic anti-Semitism was already a very potent force among both the more radical German-nationalist followers of Georg Schoenerer as well as among the more mainstream supporters of the enormously popular mayor of Vienna, Karl Lueger. There was also a large groundswell of anti-Czech sentiment due to a heavy flow of Czechs into Vienna and to the mistreatment by Czechs of Germans in Sudetenland, a situation that Hitler was later to temporarily rectify.
The most surprising fact about Hitler brought to light is that he had many Jewish friends during his Vienna days. And I had to laugh at the part where he was described by a former fellow boarder at the men's hostel as having arrived wearing shoulder-length hair and wearing nothing but a coat because he didn't have a shirt.
Though the book adds much to what we knew of Hitler, it comes no closer than any other of really getting inside his head to explain his true motivations. After all, hundreds of thousands of Europeans hated Jews and lived through the same hardships that young Hitler did, but only Hitler took that extra step and made the end of Jewry his life's work. Nevertheless, this book is a very valuable study and is an easy and fascinating read that comes highly recommended to all those who yearn to know more about the life and times of Adolf Hitler.
