A Quantum Approach to Condensed Matter Physics
Philip L. Taylor , and Olle Heinonen Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521778271 |
Book Description
This reader-friendly introduction to the theory that underlies the many fascinating properties of solids assumes only an elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics. Taylor and Heinonen describe the methods for performing calculations and making predictions of some of the many complex phenomena that occur in solids and quantum liquids. Their book, aimed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, leads the reader from the fundamental behavior of electrons and atoms in solids to the most recently explored manifestations of the quantum nature of condensed matter.Customer Reviews:

The Global Approach to Quantum Field Theory: 2-Volume Set (The International Series of Monographs on Physics, 114)
Bryce DeWitt Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0198510934 |
Book Description
The book shows how classical field theory, quantum mechanics, and quantum field theory are related. The description is global from the outset. Quantization is explained using the Peierls bracket rather than the Poisson bracket. This allows one to deal immediately with observables, bypassing the canonical formalism of constrained Hamiltonian systems and bigger-than-physical Hilbert (or Fock) spaces. The Peierls bracket leads directly to the Schwinger variational principle and the Feynman functional integral, the latter of which is taken as defining the quantum theory. Also included are the theory of tree amplitudes and conservation laws, which are presented classically and later extended to the quantum level. The quantum theory is developed from the many-worlds viewpoint, and ordinary path integrals and the topological issues to which they give rise are studied in some detail. The theory of mode functions and Bogoliubov coefficients for linear fields is fully developed, and then the quantum theory of nonlinear fields is confronted. The effective action, correlation functions and counter terms all make their appearance at this point, and the S-matrix is constructed via the introduction of asymptotic fields and the LSZ theorem. Gauge theories and ghosts are studied in great detail. Many applications of the formalism are given: vacuum currents, anomalies, black holes, fourth-order systems, higher spin fields, the (lambda phi) to the fourth power model (and spontaneous symmetry breaking), quantum electrodynamics, the Yang-Mills field and its topology, the gravitational field, etc. Special chapters are devoted to Euclideanization and renormalization, space and time inversion, and the closed-time-path or ``in-in'' formalism. Emphasis is given throughout to the role of the functional-integral measure in the theory. Six helpful appendices, ranging from superanalysis to analytic continuation in dimension, are included at the end.

New Approaches to Problems in Liquid State Theory Inhomogeneities and Phase Separation in Simple, Complex and Quantum Fluids (NATO Science Series C: Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Volume 529)
Manufacturer: Kluwer Academic ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792356705 |
Book Description
The theory of simple and complex fluids has made considerable recent progress due to the emergence of new concepts and theoretical tools, the availability of a large body of new experimental data on increasingly complex systems, and far-reaching developments in numerical simulation. Two clear trends emerge from the present book: first, the diversity of new and unexpected theoretical results relating to classical models of liquids; and secondly, the parallel emergence of new concepts, models and methods for the investigation of complex fluids and phenomena. The book lays stress on a tutorial presentation of the main topics, including liquid structure, metastability and phase transitions, confined fluids and interfaces, complex fluids and quantum fluids. Audience: Physicists, physical chemists, materials scientists and engineers who require an up-to-date account of recent progress in a rapidly growing, interdisciplinary area. Graduate students who need and introduction to the novel concepts and methods in the field.

New Theoretical Approaches to Strongly Correlated Systems (Nato Science Series II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Volume 23) (NATO Science Series II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792370007 |
Book Description
For many years, the physics of strongly correlated systems was considered a theorists' playground, right at the border with pure mathematics, where physicists from the `real world' did not venture. The time has come, however, when healthy physics cannot exist without these techniques and results.

Density Functional Theory: An Approach to the Quantum Many-Body Problem
Reiner M. Dreizler , and Eberhard K.U. Gross Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 3540519939 |
Book Description
Density Functional Theory is a rapidly developing branch of many-particle physics that has found applications in atomic, molecular, solid-state and nuclear physics. This book describes the conceptual framework of density functional theory and discusses in detail the derivation of explicit functionals from first principles as well as their application to Coulomb systems. Both non-relativistic and relativistic systems are treated. The connection of density functional theory with other many-body methods is highlighted. The presentation is self-contained; the book is, thus, well suited for a graduate course on density functional theory.

Quantum Hall Effects: Field Theoretical Approach and Related Topics
Zyun Francis Ezawa Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9810234309 |
Book Description
Tremendous theoretical and experimental developments have recently been made in the sphere of the quantum Hall effect. Among them a field-theoretical approach has presented a fascinating unified physical picture. A most significant feature of the quantum Hall system is that exotic phenomena associated with statistics transmutation are realized. For instance, an electron may undergo Bose condensation by making a charge-flux composite, and fractionally charged excitations (anyons) emerge as quasiparticles. A pedagogical and self-contained discussion on monolayer and bilayer quantum Hall systems is given in a field-theoretical framework, together with an introduction to quantum field theory, anyon physics and Chern-Simons gauge theory. Only knowledge of quantum mechanics is assumed. This invaluable book will be of great interest to students and researchers in condensed-matter, theoretical, particle and mathematical physics.

De Profundis: The Ballad of Reading Gaol and Other Writings
Oscar Wilde Manufacturer: Wordsworth Editions Ltd ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1840224010 |
Product Description
De Profundis is Wilde's eloquent and bitter reproach from prison to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. He contrasts his behaviour with that of his close friend Robert Ross who became Wilde's literary executor. The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a deeply moving and characteristically generous poem on the horrors of prison life, which was published anonymously in 1898. This collection also includes the essay The Soul of Man under Socialism and two of his Platonic dialogues, The Decay of Lying and The Critic as Artist.Customer Reviews:
