Since the 1960s, many researchers have extended topological degree theory to various non-compact type nonlinear mappings, and it has become a valuable tool in nonlinear analysis. Presenting a survey of advances made in generalizations of degree theory during the past decade, this book focuses on topological degree theory in normed spaces and its applications. The authors begin by introducing the Brouwer degree theory in Rn, then consider the Leray-Schauder degree for compact mappings in normed spaces. Next, they explore the degree theory for condensing mappings, including applications to ODEs in Banach spaces. This is followed by a study of degree theory for A-proper mappings and its applications to semilinear operator equations with Fredholm mappings and periodic boundary value problems. The focus then turns to construction of Mawhin's coincidence degree for L-compact mappings, followed by a presentation of a degree theory for mappings of class (S+) and its perturbations with other monotone-type mappings. The final chapter studies the fixed point index theory in a cone of a Banach space and presents a notable new fixed point index for countably condensing maps. Examples and exercises complement each chapter. This volume presents an introduction to the common ground between operator theory and linear systems theory. Pure mathematical topics are included such as Hardy spaces, closed operators, the gap metric, semigroups, shift-invariant subspaces, the commutant lifting theorem and almost-periodic functions, which would be suitable for a course in functional analysis. The book also includes applications to partial differential equations, the stability and stabilization of linear systems, power signal spaces, and delay systems, treated from an input/output point of view.

These 6 volumes - the result of a 10 year collaboration between the authors, two of France's leading scientists and both distinguished international figures - compile the mathematical knowledge required by researchers in mechanics, physics, engineering, chemistry and other branches of application of mathematics for the theoretical and numerical resolution of physical models on computers. Since the publication in 1924 of the "Methoden der mathematischen Physik" by Courant and Hilbert, there has been no other comprehensive and up-to-date publication presenting the mathematical tools needed in applications of mathematics in directly implementable form. The advent of large computers has in the meantime revolutionised methods of computation and made this gap in the literature intolerable: the objective of the present work is to fill just this gap. Many phenomena in physical mathematics may be modeled by a system of partial differential equations in distributed systems: a model here means a set of equations, which together with given boundary data and, if the phenomenon is evolving in time, initial data, defines the system. The advent of high-speed computers has made it possible for the first time to calculate values from models accurately and rapidly. Researchers and engineers thus have a crucial means of using numerical results to modify and adapt arguments and experiments along the way. Every facet of technical and industrial activity has been affected by these developments. Modeling by distributed systems now also supports work in many areas of physics (plasmas, new materials, astrophysics, geophysics), chemistry and mechanics and is finding increasing use in the life sciences.

Hormander's four volume guide to linear partial differential operators is the definitive guide to smooth micro-local analysis from the man who invented a large fraction of it.
Micro-local analysis is an approach to the analysis of singularities of variable coefficient linear partial differential equations based on the use of the Fourier transform and of symplectic geometry. Ideas from Hamiltonian physics and quantum theory also feature heavily. The fact that the subject is a mixture of analysis and geometry makes it beautiful and powerful.
The four volume set is hard work and in some ways is more useful as a reference work than as a learning book but on the other hand, all the material is there and the books do reward the reader who is willing to spend the time to study them carefully.
The first volume is the most accessible and the second paperback edition carries the added benefit of included exercises with partial answers which are often highly informative.

Book Description
This book develops the theory of global attractors for a class of parabolic PDEs that includes reaction-diffusion equations and the Navier-Stokes equations, two examples that are treated in detail. A lengthy chapter on Sobolev spaces provides the framework that allows a rigorous treatment of existence and uniqueness of solutions for both linear time-independent problems (Poisson's equation) and the nonlinear evolution equations which generate the infinite-dimensional dynamical systemss of the title. Attention then switches to the global attractor, a finite-dimensional subset of the infinite-dimensional phase space which determines the asymptotic dynamics. In particular, the concluding chapters investigate in what sense the dynamics restricted to the attractor are themselves "finite-dimensional." The book is intended as a didactic text for first year graduates, and assumes only a basic knowledge of Banach and Hilbert spaces, and a working understanding of the Lebesgue integral.

I am using this book in filling in the gaps in my knowledge of PDEs for my masters project and it is great. I have to agree with this author that this is a great book for a beginning student in the field. The way the auther builds up the material of functional analysis for the study of PDEs really cleared up a lot for me.

The present book is the first of the two volume proceedings of the Mark Krein International Conference on Operator Theory and Applications. This conference, which was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the prominent mathematician Mark Krein, was held in Odessa, Ukraine, from August 18-22, 1997. Resonates with Puerto Rico's sad history.......2006-10-09
I'm not going to sit here and tell you what the book is about. You should read it! It is that good! I will tell you some of its themes. Haves vs Have nots, incest, rape, murder, poverty, love, romance, all throwned into a presssure cooker titled "La charca" to create one of the most touching, poigant stories you will ever read. It has a lot of twist and turns which in the end left me completely blown away.

Nothing is what it seems.......2003-09-05
La Charca is probably one of the best books written by a Puerto Rican while Puerto Rico was under Spanish rule. If you know the history of Puerto Rico, you'd have a better understanding. The translation and introduction given by the editor Kal Wagenheim is fantastic. It's a story about love, poverty, social issues, murder and deception. It's an easy read. I recommend it highly especially if you love Puerto Rican culture.
Boring and Boring.......2003-04-14
Ok, so I love reading novels. But, this novel was the most boring book I have read in my entire life. One page is dedicated to the particles in the air. It has too many descriptions and it makes you loose the idea of the plot.
An Excellent Novel.......2002-11-30
This is an excellent novel written by one of the foremost Puerto Rican writers. It is about life in Puerto Rico at the end of the XIXth century. It represents a unique opportunity to delve into the minds, lives, and landscapes of the Puerto Rican jibaro of that time. Its Spanish is impeccable. La charca is influenced by the naturalist style in literature, and its psychology is accurate and consistent with the jibaro mind and personality. A must read.
Book Description
The double condition of Manuel Zeno Gandía -as medical doctor and politician- joins the writer's to transform the drama in La Charca into a deep reflection upon the evils that still nowadays harm the Latin American societies in general, and Puerto Rico in particular.
Within the Crónicas de un mundo enfermo series, La charca (1894) is the best from a literary standpoint. As the reader delves into the plot the depiction of the labourers' life, tersely exposed and without panphletary adjectivations, stands out as a stern denunciation. The discusions between the cult and freethinking Juan del Salto and his friends -doctor Pintado and the religious P. Esteban- contrast with the outcome and become a loud call of attention cast at the cultivated class that, having wasted decades in the discussion of social improvement theories, proved themselves incapable of building a legal and political framework to humanize the lives of the dispossesed and foster among them the practices to induce their gowth out of poverty. Zeno Gandía, as Balzac and Pérez Galdós, initiates in La Charca a narrative universe with archetypical characters that later on will reappear in successive works, sometimes under different names. Human society, degraded by its passions and hampered by colonial mentalities, first under Spain and later on under the US influence, constitutes the axis of Zeno Gandías's novels, in a narrative tone both naturalistic and cultivated.

A sad, yet wonderful major work in Puerto Rican Literature.......2006-12-08
La Charca is a Puerto-Rican novel that is mandatory reading for anyone interested in reading "real Puerto Rican" literature disassociated from the U.S. diaspora. It appeared in 1894, four years before the U.S. war against Spain, and before Puerto Rico became a "U.S. Possession", and twenty-three years before Puerto Ricans became defacto U.S. citizens via the Jones Act. La Charca [The Stagnant Pond] is a sad realist account of rural exploitation and class struggle, yet it reads like a flesh and blood multi-dimensional tragedy, rather than a dry social critique. I will be teaching Latina/o Studies this coming Spring and wanted to see if this text was in print. Happily, it is. It is important for readers of U.S. Latina/o Literature to read books written by Puerto Ricans who were not primarily interested in the Puerto-Rico U.S. encounter, or another stereotypical U.S. P-R prison tragi-comedy with a predictable conversion or otherwise nihilistic ending. Readers should note that THERE IS a Puerto-Rican Literature of the nineteenth century, and this wonderful book is a taste of that rich literature. Juan Flores is a wonderful critic, so be sure to read any article he has on La Charca, even if it doesn't appear in this text. You can reference Flores's articles "for free" by going to JSTOR (short for Journal Storage) via any good university/college electronic research page and typing in Flores and/or La Charca after you get onto JSTOR.
