      Book Description

Software Engineering Techniques Applied to Agricultural Systems presents cutting-edge software engineering techniques for designing and implementing better agricultural software systems based on the object-oriented paradigm and the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The book is divided in two parts: the first part presents concepts of the object-oriented paradigm and the UML notation of these concepts, and the second part provides a number of examples of applications that use the material presented in the first part. The examples presented illustrate the techniques discussed, focusing on how to construct better models using objects and UML diagrams. More advanced concepts such as distributed systems and examples of how to build these systems are presented in the last chapter of the book. The book presents a step-by-step approach for modeling agricultural systems, starting with a conceptual diagram representing elements of the system and their relationships. Furthermore, diagrams such as sequential and collaboration diagrams are used to explain the dynamic and static aspects of the software system.

            Book Description

This monograph introduces a novel class of non-linear dynamic mathematical models that makes possible the modeling of problems of analysis and synthesis for a wide class of evolutionary systems. There are potentially unlimited uses of these mathematical models due to the unlimited quantity of different evolutionary systems that can be integrated at many different levels of difficulty. Part I of the book, on the general theory, is mainly devoted to the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the systems of equations of mathematical models and for respective optimization problems; Part II focuses on optimal numerical methods: and Part III presents various applications.
Audience: Researchers, decision-makers, and students of applied mathematics, especially those with an interest in applications to economics, ecology, biology, immunology, medicine and health care.

                    Book Description

For both public and private managers, the book Optimization Methods for a Stakeholder Society is today's key to answer the problem of a sustainable development world. This world has to take into account the meaning of all stakeholders involved and has to reconcile a number of objectives, such as economic growth, employment and preservation of the ecosystem. Traditional methods, such as cost-benefit, are outmoded as they translate all these objectives into monetary costs, a materialistic approach. On the contrary, objectives have rather to stick to their own units, eventually indicators.
The author is in favor of the use of nonlinear methods in multi-objective optimization. Therefore, several nonlinear approaches are proposed, illustrated with many applications from different fields such as: privatization in the public sector, regional versus national economic policy in a country, location of a seaport, arms procurement, industrialization of a developing country, updating or replacement of old industry, pre- and post-evaluation of projects, performance management, marketing and distribution.

                      Book Description

In vector optimization one investigates optimization problems in an abstract setting which have a not necessarily real-valued objective function. This scientific discipline is closely related to multi-objective optimization and multi-criteria decision making. This book contains refereed contributions to the "International Conference on Vector Optimization" held at the Technical University of Darmstadt from August 4-7, 1986. This meeting was an interdisciplinary forum devoted to new results in the theory, to applications as well as to the solution of vector optimization problems which are relevant in practice. Because of the great variety of topics covered by the contributions, the 25 articles of this volume are organized in different sections: Historical retrospect, mathematical theory, goal setting and decision making, engineering applications, and related topics. The papers of the invited State-of-the-Art Tutorials given by Professors J.M. Borwein, H. Eschenauer, W. Stadler and P.L. Yu are also included.

"The only tyrant I'll accept in this world is the 'still, small voice' within."
"Democracy, disciplined and enlightened, is the finest thing in the world."
"Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will."

This 21st-century expanded edition of this inspiring collection reaffirms the message of the great spiritual leader, whose life was dramatized so brilliantly in Attenborough's movie Gandhi, and who was Time magazine's "Man of the Century" runner-up (to Albert Einstein).

This expanded edition brings to a new readership more than 150 excerpts of the great spiritual leader's letters, speeches, and writings from more than four decades on daily life, cooperation, nonviolence, peace, and faith. With selections and a preface by the award-winning director of Gandhi, the book now also includes an introduction by Johanna McGeary, Time's Senior Foreign Correspondent (who wrote the essay on Gandhi for Time's century-end issue), placing Gandhi's life and work in the historical context of the 20th century.

"Gandhi was inevitable. If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. He lived, thought and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony. We may ignore him at our own risk."—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

                      5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2006-08-10

This book is short and sweet (the quotes are spaced out on the pages and they include photographs). This was informative of areas Ghandi does not talk of much in his autobiography, especially his views on non-violence. Inspiring quotes that get you thinking.

5 out of 5 stars VERY POWERFUL WORDS OF WISDOM.......2000-11-26

Once I saw this book advertised, I remembered the author's name as the man who made the super motion film "Ghandi" and I know that it was going to be a good book. I must say that I am very pleased wityh it and these words of wisdom can really be put to use in our daily lifestyle and help improve ourselves to become better persons regardless of religion or ethnic background. These inspiring quotes are well documented in appropriate sections such as : Daily Life, Co-operation, Non-violence, Peace, Faith etc. I would like to leave you with one of these valuable quotes for your kind consideration.

"I have learnt through bitter experience the one supreme lesson; to conserve any anger, and as heat conserved is transmuted into energy, even so our anger controlled can be transmuted into a power which can move the world."

5 out of 5 stars Comparable to Proverbs.......1998-05-17

It is like the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. Gandhi's seemingly superhuman insight on virtue is indeed deeply moving. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to hear many of the words of the wisest.

I am a court reporter who is using continuous speech recognition software to produce transcripts and to do realtime reporting. I am considered to be an advanced user and have assisted and consulted many other people on speech recognition products. This book immediately became invaluable to me. "Dragon Naturally Speaking Complete" gives the reader a well-rounded understanding of the basic mechanics of state-of-the-art speech recognition products on the market, and then serves as a compass to guide them through how to best apply this technology.

I receive numerous calls and e-mails every week covering a fairly wide range of speech recognition issues. I answer those questions as best I can, but usually I feel like the person needs more information than I can give them at the time to understand the software and hardware well enough to achieve their goals. This book covers almost every aspect of speech recognition that I have had to deal with. Paid consultants might want to keep this gem under their hat, because this book will empower its readers to a very high degree. This book not only gives its reader insight to methods and techniques to rapidly build their speech recognition skills, but it also gives a very good explanation of hardware issues concerning speech recognition. The authors also have given numerous references to sites, products and newsgroups that are invaluable resources.

Before buying the book, I thought the book might turn out to be too technical in nature for many people. Those concerns were quelled after reading just the first few pages. This book is written clearly enough so that a novice to speech recognition can understand it, and then be incrementally elevated to a high level of proficiency. If some thought and common sense is applied, the reader will be elevated to an advanced level. I consider this compendium to be a speech recognition treatise, only written so we mere mortals can understand!

I have gone thru almost all the book so far and I find that is full of tips to make my speech recognition use a better experience. Yes, it is true that in some instances I would like to see more macros, but that would require a devoted book on the subject. I am a software trainer and I always find that different audiences have different expectatives and sometimes they find I have not met them. Good work and I congratulate the authors for the effort on putting so much information at hand.

There is lots of prose, and Hundreds of mostly useless tables. I got almost no usable information out of this book. For instance, I foolishly expected the chapter on using NaturallySpeaking with physical disabilities to contain some sort of insights on approaches or macros to use for various types of disability. Instead, the chapter largely consists of a list of websites for various accessibility-related business concerns.

The manuals that already come with the product are much more informative than this book.

This is a thorough, up to date (1/2000) reference on how to get the most out of your speech recognition product, particularly Dragon. It is replete with information starting from the "nuts and bolts" and encompassing details on hardware and software, microphones, recorders, sound cards, USB connections...you name it. It is well-written and made easy to comprehend by folks who obviously are most knowledgeable, have a subtle sense of humor, and who love and use computerized speech recognition because they have found ways to make their daily work more efficient(and fun!), and want to share what they've learned. They've also shared their macros and other useful program utilities, which are contained on the included CD-Rom. If the answers to your questions about getting the most out of speech recognition are not provided within these pages, then they don't exist. This book is easily the most cost-effective "upgrade" you can buy, helping to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of your speech recognition product for a mere few dollars. I recommend it particularly for medical or legal professionals seeking to incorporate speech recognition into their everyday practices, as well as for other perhaps less demanding uses...but certainly for anyone who has already made the leap, or considering to incorporate speech recognition hardware and software, and wanting to get the most from their hard-earned dollars.

I thought this was an excellent book. From the very first chapters Ghandi's words give cause for pause and self examination. A very good read written by one of the world's greatests persons. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. This is a very good place to begin if you are wanting to study Ghandi's works, or it stands quite well alone.

                              4 out of 5 stars Introduction.......2000-04-28

This collection of Quotations from Ghandi's principal works was originally issued by UNESCO as an introduction to his thinking. The chapters cover Gandhi's life and his views on religion, non-violence, politics, the future of India and the role of women in society. Gandhi was this rare phenomenon in history: a true political revolutionary who did not destroy people and had an absolute respect for human life .His thoughts and actions inspired the Civil Richts struggle of the sixties and the peacefull revolutions in Eastern Europe and the Phillipines.

5 out of 5 stars A very insightful view that delves into gandhi's psyche........1999-11-04

Very good book, the book contains several interesting happenings in gandhi's life. It is very melancholic and reflectful. The book however, is a hard read, and I found myself struggling to understand what Gandhi meant. But there are very good metaphors and some very interpretive views on modern day india, as well as the world. Gandhi was a predominant character in the 20th century, and his works are highly appreciated. I recommned this book to all readers of interest in india. And hope that you enjoy it as I did.
